Some results on the Wiener index related to the Šoltés problem of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Wiener index, $W(G)$, of a connected graph $G$ is the sum of distances between its vertices. In 2021, Akhmejanova et al. posed the problem of finding graphs $G$ with large $R_m(G)= |\{v\in V(G)\,|\,W(G)-W(G-v)=m \in \mathbb{Z} \}|/ |V(G)|$. It is shown that there is a graph $G$ with $R_m(G) > 1/2$ for any integer $m \ge 0$. In particular, there is a regular graph of even degree with this property for any odd $m \ge 1$. The proposed approach allows to construct new families of graphs $G$ with $R_0(G) \rightarrow 1/2$ when the order of $G$ increases.
Many vertex-disjoint even cycles of fixed length in a graph

For every integer $k \ge 3$, we determine the extremal structure of an $n$-vertex graph with at most $t$ vertex-disjoint copies of $C_{2k}$ when $n$ is sufficiently large and $t$ lies in the interval $\left[\frac{\mathrm{ex}(n,C_{2k})}{\varepsilon n}, \varepsilon n\right]$, where $\varepsilon>0$ is a constant depending only on $k$. The question for $k = 2$ and $t = o\left(\frac{\mathrm{ex}(n,C_{2k})}{n}\right)$ was explored in prior work~\cite{HHLLYZ23a}, revealing different extremal structures in these cases. Our result can be viewed as an extension of the theorems by Egawa~\cite{Ega96} and Verstraëte~\cite{Ver03}, where the focus was on the existence of many vertex-disjoint cycles of the same length without any length constraints.
Toward a density Corrádi--Hajnal theorem for degenerate hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given an $r$-graph $F$ with $r \ge 2$, let $\mathrm{ex}(n, (t+1) F)$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $r$-graph with at most $t$ pairwise vertex-disjoint copies of $F$. Extending several old results and complementing prior work [J. Hou, H. Li, X. Liu, L.-T. Yuan, and Y. Zhang. A step towards a general density Corrádi--Hajnal theorem. arXiv:2302.09849, 2023.] on nondegenerate hypergraphs, we initiate a systematic study on $\mathrm{ex}(n, (t+1) F)$ for degenerate hypergraphs $F$. For a broad class of degenerate hypergraphs $F$, we present near-optimal upper bounds for $\mathrm{ex}(n, (t+1) F)$ when $n$ is sufficiently large and $t$ lies in intervals $\left[0, \frac{\varepsilon \cdot \mathrm{ex}(n,F)}{n^{r-1}}\right]$, $\left[\frac{\mathrm{ex}(n,F)}{\varepsilon n^{r-1}}, \varepsilon n \right]$, and $\left[ (1-\varepsilon)\frac{n}{v(F)}, \frac{n}{v(F)} \right]$, where $\varepsilon > 0$ is a constant depending only on $F$. Our results reveal very different structures for extremal constructions across the three intervals, and we provide characterizations of extremal constructions within the first interval. Additionally, for graphs, we offer a characterization of extremal constructions within the second interval. Our proof for the first interval also applies to a special class of nondegenerate hypergraphs, including those with undetermined Turán densities, partially improving a result in [J. Hou, H. Li, X. Liu, L.-T. Yuan, and Y. Zhang. A step towards a general density Corrádi--Hajnal theorem. arXiv:2302.09849, 2023.]

Factorial moments of the Poisson distribution of order $k$
The factorial moments of the standard Poisson distribution are well known. The present note presents an explicit combinatorial sum for the factorial moments of the Poisson distribution of order $k$. Unlike the standard Poisson distribution (the case $k=1$), for $k>1$ the structure of the factorial moments is much more complicated. Some properties of the factorial moments of the Poisson distribution of order $k$ are elucidated in this note.

On Young diagrams of maximum dimension
Published in Communications in Mathematics, Volume 31 (2023), Issue 3 (Special issue: in memory of Sergei Duzhin) (December 22, 2023) cm:12641 • View PublicationBIB
We study the problem of finding Young diagrams of maximum dimension, i. e. those with the largest number of Young tableaux of their shapes. Consider a class of Young diagrams that differ from a symmetric diagram by no more than one box $(i,j)$ in each row and column. It is proven that when moving boxes $(i,j), i>j$ to symmetric positions $(j,i)$, the original diagram is transformed into another diagram of the same size, but with a greater or equal dimension. A conjecture is formulated that generalizes the above fact to the case of arbitrary Young diagrams. Based on this conjecture, we developed an algorithm applied to obtain new Young diagrams of sizes up to 42 thousand boxes with large and maximum dimensions.

Sufficient conditions for matching extendability in terms of the Zeroth-order General Randić Index
Topological indices are important bridge between graph theory and chemical applications. The study of graph matching expandability has been an influential topic in recent research on graph structure. In this paper, we provide some sufficient conditions for a graph to be $k$-extendable graphs, $n$-factor-critical graphs and $(n,k,d)$-graphs and graphs with prefect matching in terms of a significant type of Topological index: the Zeroth-order General Randić Index ($α\ge-1$ and $α\neq 0$).

Well-covered Unitary Cayley Graphs of Matrix Rings over Finite Fields and Applications
Published in Finite fields and their applications, Vol. 96 (2024), article no. 102428 • View PublicationBIB
Suppose that $F$ is a finite field and $R=M_n(F)$ is the ring of $n$-square matrices over $F$. Here we characterize when the Cayley graph of the additive group of $R$ with respect to the set of invertible elements of $R$, called the unitary Cayley graph of $R$, is well-covered. Then we apply this to characterize all finite rings with identity whose unitary Cayley graph is well-covered or Cohen-Macaulay.

Counting cliques without generalized theta graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The \textit{generalized Turán number} $\mathrm{ex}(n, T, F)$ is the maximum possible number of copies of $T$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices for any two graphs $T$ and $F$. For the book graph $B_t$, there is a close connection between $\ex(n,K_3,B_t)$ and the Ruzsa-Szemerédi triangle removal lemma. Motivated by this, in this paper, we study the generalized Turán problem for generalized theta graphs, a natural extension of book graphs. Our main result provides a complete characterization of the magnitude of $\ex(n,K_3,H)$ when $H$ is a generalized theta graph, indicating when it is quadratic, when it is nearly quadratic, and when it is subquadratic. Furthermore, as an application, we obtain the exact value of $\ex(n, K_r, kF)$, where $F$ is an edge-critical generalized theta graph, and $3\le r\le k+1$, extending several recent results.

Maxima of the index: forbidden unbalanced cycles
This paper aims to address the problem: what is the maximum index among all $\mathcal{C}^-_r$-free unbalanced signed graphs, where $\mathcal{C}^-_r$ is the set of unbalanced cycle of length $r$. Let $Γ_1 = C_3^- \bullet K_{n-2}$ be a signed graph obtained by identifying a vertex of $K_{n-2}$ with a vertex of $C_3^-$ whose two incident edges in $C_3^-$ are all positive, where $C_3^-$ is an unbalanced triangle with one negative edge. It is shown that if $Γ$ is an unbalanced signed graph of order $n$, $r$ is an integer in $\{4, \cdots, \lfloor \frac{n}{3}\rfloor + 1 \}$, and $$λ_{1}(Γ) \geq λ_{1}(Γ_1), $$ then $Γ$ contains an unbalanced cycle of length $r$, unless $Γ\sim Γ_1$. \indent It is shown that the result are significant in spectral extremal graph problems. Because they can be regarded as a extension of the spectral Tur{á}n problem for cycles [Linear Algebra Appl. 428 (2008) 1492--1498] in the context of signed graphs. Furthermore, our result partly resolved a recent open problem raised by Lin and Wang [arXiv preprint arXiv:2309.04101 (2023)].
The number of independent sets in bipartite graphs and benzenoids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph $G$, we study the number of independent sets in $G$, denoted $i(G)$. This parameter is known as both the Merrifield-Simmons index of a graph as well as the Fibonacci number of a graph. In this paper, we give general bounds for $i(G)$ when $G$ is bipartite and we give its exact value when $G$ is a balanced caterpillar. We improve upon a known upper bound for $i(T)$ when $T$ is a tree, and study a conjecture that all but finitely many positive integers represent $i(T)$ for some tree $T$. We also give exact values for $i(G)$ when $G$ is a particular type of benzenoid.

Difference ascent sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let alpha = a_1 a_2 ... a_n be a sequence of nonnegative integers. The ascent set of alpha, Asc(alpha), consists of all indices k where a_{k+1} > a_k. An ascent sequence is alpha where the growth of the a_k is bounded by the elements of Asc(alpha). These sequences were introduced by Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes and Kitaev and have many wonderful properties. In particular, they are in bijection with unlabeled (2+2)-free posets, permutations avoiding a particular bivincular pattern, certain upper-triangular nonnegative integer matrices, and a class of matchings. A weak ascent of alpha is an index k with a_{k+1} >= a_k and weak ascent sequences are defined analogously to ascent sequences. These were studied by Bényi, Claesson and Dukes and shown to have analogous equinumerous sets. Given a nonnegative integer d, we define a difference d ascent to be an index k such that a_{k+1} > a_k - d. We study the properties of the corresponding d-ascent sequences, showing that some of the maps from the weak case can be extended to bijections for general d while the extensions of others continue to be injective (but not surjective). We also make connections with other combinatorial objects such as rooted duplication trees and restricted growth functions.

Arndt compositions: a generating functions approach
We use generating functions to enumerate Arndt compositions, that is, integer compositions where there is a descent between every second pair of parts, starting with the first and second part, and so on. In 2013, Jörg Arndt noted that this family of compositions is counted by the Fibonacci sequence. We provide an approach that is purely based on generating functions to prove this observation. We also enumerate these compositions with respect to the number of parts and the last part. From this approach, we can generalize some recent results given by Hopkins and Tangboonduangjit in 2023. Finally, we study some possible generalizations of this counting problem.
Lattice Path Delta Matroids
We initiate the study of a type $C_n$ generalization of the lattice path matroids defined by Bonin, de Mier, and Noy. These are delta matroids whose feasible sets are in bijection with lattice paths which are symmetric along the main diagonal. We describe deletion, contraction, enveloping matroids, and the homogeneous components of these delta matroids in terms of the combinatorics of symmetric lattice paths. In the second half, we study the convex geometry of the feasible polytopes of lattice path delta matroids. We show that these polytopes decompose into the feasible polytope of special lattice paths corresponding to intervals in the type $C_n$ Gale order whose related Richardson variety is a toric variety. Further, these special polytopes inherit a unimodular triangulation from Stanley's Eulerian triangulation of the hypercube. As a consequence, the volume of these polytopes is the proportion of permutations with specific ascent sets.

A connection between the $A_α$-spectrum and the Lovász theta number
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the smallest $α$ so that $αD + (1-α)A \succcurlyeq 0$ is at least $1/\vartheta(\overline{G})$, significantly improving upon a result due to Nikiforov and Rojo (2017). In fact, we display an even stronger connection: if the nonzero entries of $A$ are allowed to vary and those of $D$ vary accordingly, then we show that this smallest $α$ is in fact equal to $1/\vartheta(\overline{G})$. We also show other results obtained as an application of this optimization framework, including a connection to the well-known quadratic formulation for $ω(G)$ due to Motzkin and Straus (1964).

A method to compute the strength using bounds
A numbering $f$ of a graph $G$ of order $n$ is a labeling that assigns distinct elements of the set $\{1,2, \ldots, n \}$ to the vertices of $G$. The strength $\mathrm{str}\left(G\right) $ of $G$ is defined by $\mathrm{str}\left( G\right) =\min \left\{ \mathrm{str}_{f}\left( G\right)\left\vert f\text{ is a numbering of }G\right. \right\}$, where $\mathrm{str}_{f}\left( G\right) =\max \left\{ f\left( u\right) +f\left( v\right) \left\vert uv\in E\left( G\right) \right. \right\} $. A few lower and upper bounds for the strength are known and, although it is in general hard to compute the exact value for the strength, a reasonable approach to this problem is to study for which graphs a lower bound and an upper bound for the strength coincide. In this paper, we study general conditions for graphs that allow us to determine which graphs have the property that lower and upper bounds for the strength coincide and other graphs for which this approach is useless.

On the Number of $A$-mappings with Remainder
Mappings of a finite set into itself with restriction on the cycle lengths are considered (the so-called A-mappings). Asymptotics is given for the number of these mappings with a power-law reduction of the remainder.

Repetition factorization of automatic sequences

Following Inoue et al., we define a word to be a repetition if it is a (fractional) power of exponent at least 2. A word has a repetition factorization if it is the product of repetitions. We study repetition factorizations in several (generalized) automatic sequences, including the infinite Fibonacci word, the Thue-Morse word, paperfolding words, and the Rudin-Shapiro sequence.
Every latin hypercube of order 5 has transversals

We prove that for all n>1 every latin n-dimensional cube of order 5 has transversals. We find all 123 paratopy classes of layer-latin cubes of order 5 with no transversals. For each $n\geq 3$ and $q\geq 3$ we construct a (2q-2)-layer latin n-dimensional cuboid with no transversals. Moreover, we find all paratopy classes of nonextendible and noncompletable latin cuboids of order 5.

Inequalities and asymptotics for hook numbers in restricted partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider the asymptotic properties of hook numbers of partitions in restricted classes. More specifically, we compare the frequency with which partitions into odd parts and partitions into distinct parts have hook numbers equal to $h \geq 1$ by deriving an asymptotic formula for the total number of hooks equal to $h$ that appear among partitions into odd and distinct parts, respectively. We use these asymptotic formulas to prove a recent conjecture of the first author and collaborators that for $h \geq 2$ and $n \gg 0$, partitions into odd parts have, on average, more hooks equal to $h$ than do partitions into distinct parts. We also use our asymptotics to prove certain probabilistic statements about how hooks distribute in the rows of partitions.
