The independence number, coloring number and related parameters are investigated in the setting of oriented hypergraphs using the spectrum of the normalized Laplace operator. For the independence number, both an inertia--like bound and a ratio--like bound are shown. A Sandwich Theorem involving the clique number, the vector chromatic number and the coloring number is proved, as well as a lower bound for the vector chromatic number in terms of the smallest and the largest eigenvalue of the normalized Laplacian. In addition, spectral partition numbers are studied in relation to the coloring number.

A Neumaier graph is a non-complete edge-regular graph containing a regular clique. In this paper we give some sufficient and necessary conditions for a Neumaier graph to be strongly regular. Further we show that there does not exist Neumaier graphs with exactly four distinct eigenvalues. We also determine the Neumaier graphs with smallest eigenvalue -2.
Eigenvalues, Smith normal form and determinantal ideals
Determinantal ideals of graphs generalize, among others, the spectrum and the Smith normal form (SNF) of integer matrices associated to graphs. In this work we investigate the relationship of the spectrum and the SNF with the determinantal ideals. We show that an eigenvalue divides the $k$-th invariant factor of its SNF if the eigenvalue belongs to a variety of the $k$-th univariate integer determinantal ideal of the matrix. This result has as a corollary a theorem of Rushanan. We also study graphs having the same determinantal ideals with at most one indeterminate; the socalled codeterminantal graphs, which generalize the concepts of cospectral and coinvariant graphs. We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for graphs to be codeterminantal on $\mathbb{R}[x]$, and we present some computational results on codeterminantal graphs up to 9 vertices. Finally, we show that complete graphs and star graphs are determined by the SNF of its distance Laplacian matrix.
Spectral upper bound on the quantum k-independence number of a graph

A well known upper bound for the independence number $α(G)$ of a graph $G$, due to Cvetković, is that \begin{equation*} α(G) \le n^0 + \min\{n^+ , n^-\} \end{equation*} where $(n^+, n^0, n^-)$ is the inertia of $G$. We prove that this bound is also an upper bound for the quantum independence number $α_q$(G), where $α_q(G) \ge α(G)$ and for some graphs $α_q(G) \gg α(G)$. We identify numerous graphs for which $α(G) = α_q(G)$, thus increasing the number of graphs for which $α_q$ is known. We also demonstrate that there are graphs for which the above bound is not exact with any Hermitian weight matrix, for $α(G)$ and $α_q(G)$. Finally, we show this result in the more general context of spectral bounds for the quantum $k$-independence number, where the $k$-independence number is the maximum size of a set of vertices at pairwise distance greater than $k$.
On the status sequences of trees
The status of a vertex $v$ in a connected graph is the sum of the distances from $v$ to all other vertices. The status sequence of a connected graph is the list of the statuses of all the vertices of the graph. In this paper we investigate the status sequences of trees. Particularly, we show that it is NP-complete to decide whether there exists a tree that has a given sequence of integers as its status sequence. We also present some results about trees whose status sequences are comprised of a few distinct numbers or many distinct numbers. In this direction, we provide a partial answer to a conjecture of Shang and Lin from 2011, showing that any status injective tree is unique among trees. Finally, we investigate how orbit partitions and equitable partitions relate to the status sequence.

A natural generalization of a regular (or equitable) partition of a graph, which makes sense also for non-regular graphs, is the so-called weight-regular partition, which gives to each vertex $u\in V$ a weight that equals the corresponding entry $ν_u$ of the Perron eigenvector $\mathbfν$. This paper contains three main results related to weight-regular partitions of a graph. The first is a characterization of weight-regular partitions in terms of double stochastic matrices. Inspired by a characterization of regular graphs by Hoffman, we also provide a new characterization of weight-regularity by using a Hoffman-like polynomial. As a corollary, we obtain Hoffman's result for regular graphs. In addition, we show an application of weight-regular partitions to study graphs that attain equality in the classical Hoffman's lower bound for the chromatic number of a graph, and we show that weight-regularity provides a condition under which Hoffman's bound can be improved.

We study the behaviour of the 2-rank of the adjacency matrix of a graph under Seidel and Godsil-McKay switching, and apply the result to graphs coming from graphical Hadamard matrices of order $4^m$. Starting with graphs from known Hadamard matrices of order $64$, we find (by computer) many Godsil-McKay switching sets that increase the 2-rank. Thus we find strongly regular graphs with parameters $(63,32,16,16)$, $(64,36,20,20)$, and $(64,28,12,12)$ for almost all feasible 2-ranks. In addition we work out the behaviour of the 2-rank for a graph product related to the Kronecker product for Hadamard matrices, which enables us to find many graphical Hadamard matrices of order $4^m$ for which the related strongly regular graphs have an unbounded number of different 2-ranks. The paper extends results from the article 'Switched symplectic graphs and their 2-ranks' by the first and the last author.
Spectral Bounds for the Connectivity of Regular Graphs with Given Order

The second-largest eigenvalue and second-smallest Laplacian eigenvalue of a graph are measures of its connectivity. These eigenvalues can be used to analyze the robustness, resilience, and synchronizability of networks, and are related to connectivity attributes such as the vertex- and edge-connectivity, isoperimetric number, and characteristic path length. In this paper, we present two upper bounds for the second-largest eigenvalues of regular graphs and multigraphs of a given order which guarantee a desired vertex- or edge-connectivity. The given bounds are in terms of the order and degree of the graphs, and hold with equality for infinite families of graphs. These results answer a question of Mohar.

In this paper, we investigate various algebraic and graph theoretic properties of the distance matrix of a graph. Two graphs are $D$-cospectral if their distance matrices have the same spectrum. We construct infinite pairs of $D$-cospectral graphs with different diameter and different Wiener index. A graph is $k$-transmission-regular if its distance matrix has constant row sum equal to $k$. We establish tight upper and lower bounds for the row sum of a $k$-transmission-regular graph in terms of the number of vertices of the graph. Finally, we determine the Wiener index and its complexity for linear $k$-trees, and obtain a closed form for the Wiener index of block-clique graphs in terms of the Laplacian eigenvalues of the graph. The latter leads to a generalization of a result for trees which was proved independently by Mohar and Merris.

In this paper, we present the first application of Hoffman graphs for spectral characterizations of graphs. In particular, we show that the $2$-clique extension of the $(t+1)\times(t+1)$-grid is determined by its spectrum when $t$ is large enough. This result will help to show that the Grassmann graph $J_2(2D,D)$ is determined by its intersection numbers as a distance regular graph, if $D$ is large enough.

In this paper, we obtain two spectral upper bounds for the $k$-independence number of a graph which is is the maximum size of a set of vertices at pairwise distance greater than $k$. We construct graphs that attain equality for our first bound and show that our second bound compares favorably to previous bounds on the $k$-independence number.

The distance matrix of a graph $G$ is the matrix containing the pairwise distances between vertices. The distance eigenvalues of $G$ are the eigenvalues of its distance matrix and they form the distance spectrum of $G$. We determine the distance spectra of halved cubes, double odd graphs, and Doob graphs, completing the determination of distance spectra of distance regular graphs having exactly one positive distance eigenvalue. We characterize strongly regular graphs having more positive than negative distance eigenvalues. We give examples of graphs with few distinct distance eigenvalues but lacking regularity properties. We also determine the determinant and inertia of the distance matrices of lollipop and barbell graphs.

We apply Godsil-McKay switching to the symplectic graphs over $\mathbb{F}_2$ with at least 63 vertices and prove that the 2-rank of (the adjacency matrix of) the graph increases after switching. This shows that the switched graph is a new strongly regular graph with parameters $(2^{2ν}\!-1, 2^{2ν-1}, 2^{2ν-2},2^{2ν-2})$ and 2-rank $2ν+2$ when $ν\geq 3$. For the symplectic graph on $63$ vertices we investigate repeated switching by computer and find many new strongly regular graphs with the above parameters for $ν=3$ with various 2-ranks. Using these results and a recursive construction method for the symplectic graph from Hadamard matrices, we obtain several graphs with the above parameters, but different 2-ranks for every $ν\geq 3$.
Godsil-McKay switching and isomorphism

Godsil-McKay switching is an operation on graphs that doesn't change the spectrum of the adjacency matrix. Usually (but not always) the obtained graph is non-isomorphic with the original graph. We present a straightforward sufficient condition for being isomorphic after switching, and give examples which show that this condition is not necessary. For some graph products we obtain sufficient conditions for being non-isomorphic after switching. As an example we find that the tensor product of the $\ell\times m$ grid ($\ell>m\geq 2$) and a graph with at least one vertex of degree two is not determined by its adjacency spectrum.
