Punctured surfaces, quiver mutations, and quotients of Coxeter groups
In 2011, Barot and Marsh provided an explicit construction of presentation of a finite Weyl group $W$ by any quiver mutation-equivalent to an orientation of a Dynkin diagram with Weyl group $W$. The construction was extended by the authors of the present paper to obtain presentations for all affine Coxeter groups, as well as to construct groups from triangulations of unpunctured surfaces and orbifolds, where the groups are invariant under change of triangulation and thus are presented as quotients of numerous distinct Coxeter groups. We extend the construction to include most punctured surfaces and orbifolds, providing a new invariant for almost all marked surfaces.
Finiteness of rank for Grassmann convexity
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Grassmann convexity conjecture gives a conjectural formula for the maximal total number of real zeros of the consecutive Wronskians of an arbitrary fundamental solution to a disconjugate linear ordinary differential equation with real time. The conjecture can be reformulated in terms of convex curves in the nilpotent lower triangular group. The formula has already been shown to be a correct lower bound and to give a correct upper bound in several small dimensional cases. In this paper we obtain a general explicit upper bound.
Cluster algebras from surfaces and extended affine Weyl groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We characterize mutation-finite cluster algebras of rank at least 3 using positive semi-definite quadratic forms. In particular, we associate with every unpunctured bordered surface a positive semi-definite quadratic space $V$, and with every triangulation a basis in $V$, such that any mutation of a cluster (i.e., a flip of a triangulation) transforms the corresponding bases into each other by partial reflections. Furthermore, every triangulation gives rise to an extended affine Weyl group of type $A$, which is invariant under flips. The construction is also extended to exceptional skew-symmetric mutation-finite cluster algebras of types $E$.
Periodic staircase matrices and generalized cluster structures
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not. 2022, no.6, 4181-4221 • View PublicationBIB
As is well-known, cluster transformations in cluster structures of geometric type are often modeled on determinant identities, such as short Plucker relations, Desnanot--Jacobi identities and their generalizations. We present a construction that plays a similar role in a description of generalized cluster transformations and discuss its applications to generalized cluster structures in GL_n compatible with a certain subclass of Belavin--Drinfeld Poisson--Lie brackets, in the Drinfeld double of GL_n, and in spaces of periodic difference operators.

Grassmann convexity and multiplicative Sturm theory, revisited
In this paper we settle a special case of the Grassmann convexity conjecture formulated earlier by B.and M.Shapiro. We present a conjectural formula for the maximal total number of real zeros of the consecutive Wronskians of an arbitrary fundamental solution to a disconjugate linear ordinary differential equation with real time. We show that this formula gives the lower bound for the required total number of real zeros for equations of an arbitrary order and, using our results on the Grassmann convexity, we prove that the aforementioned formula is correct for equations of orders $4$ and $5$.

Cluster algebras with Grassmann variables
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop a version of cluster algebra extending the ring of Laurent polynomials by adding Grassmann variables. These algebras can be described in terms of `extended quivers' which are oriented hypergraphs. We describe mutations of such objects and define a corresponding commutative superalgebra. Our construction includes the notion of weighted quivers that has already appeared in different contexts. This paper is a step of understanding the notion of cluster superalgebra
On moments of a polytope
Published in Analysis and Mathematical Physics, 2018 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the multivariate generating function of appropriately normalized moments of a measure with homogeneous polynomial density supported on a compact polytope P in R^d is a rational function. Its denominator is the product of linear forms dual to the vertices of P raised to the power equal to the degree of the density function. Using this, we solve the inverse moment problem for the set of, not necessarily convex, polytopes having a given set S of vertices. Under a weak non-degeneracy assumption we also show that the uniform measure supported on any such polytope is a linear combination of uniform measures supported on simplices with vertices in S.
Growth rate of cluster algebras

We complete the computation of growth rate of cluster algebras. In particular, we show that growth of all exceptional non-affine mutation-finite cluster algebras is exponential.

Teichmüller spaces of Riemann surfaces with orbifold points of arbitrary order and cluster variables
Published in Int Math Res Notices (2014) Vol. 2014 2746-2772 • View PublicationBIB
We generalize a new class of cluster type mutations for which exchange transformations are given by reciprocal polynomials. In the case of second-order polynomials of the form $x+2\cos{π/n_o}+x^{-1}$ these transformations are related to triangulations of Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus with at least one hole/puncture and with an arbitrary number of orbifold points of arbitrary integer orders $n_o$. We propose the dual graph description of the corresponding Teichmüller spaces, construct the Poisson algebra of the Teichmüller space coordinates, propose the combinatorial description of the corresponding geodesic functions and find the mapping class group transformations.

Cluster algebras and triangulated orbifolds

We construct geometric realization for non-exceptional mutation-finite cluster algebras by extending the theory of Fomin and Thurston to skew-symmetrizable case. Cluster variables for these algebras are renormalized lambda lengths on certain hyperbolic orbifolds. We also compute growth rate of these cluster algebras, provide positivity of Laurent expansions of cluster variables, and prove sign-coherence of c-vectors.

Cluster algebras of finite mutation type via unfoldings
Published in Int. Math. Res. Notices 2012 (2012), 1768-1804 • View PublicationBIB
We complete classification of mutation-finite cluster algebras by extending the technique derived by Fomin, Shapiro, and Thurston to skew-symmetrizable case. We show that for every mutation-finite skew-symmetrizable matrix a diagram characterizing the matrix admits an unfolding which embeds its mutation class to the mutation class of some mutation-finite skew-symmetric matrix. In particular, this establishes a correspondence between a large class of skew-symmetrizable mutation-finite cluster algebras and triangulated marked bordered surfaces.

Skew-symmetric cluster algebras of finite mutation type
Published in J. Eur. Math. Soc. 14 (2012), 1135-1180 • View PublicationBIB
In 2003, Fomin and Zelevinsky obtained Cartan-Killing type classification of all cluster algebras of finite type, i.e. cluster algebras having only finitely many distinct cluster variables. A wider class of cluster algebras is formed by cluster algebras of finite mutation type which have finitely many exchange matrices (but are allowed to have infinitely many cluster variables). In this paper we classify all cluster algebras of finite mutation type with skew-symmetric exchange matrices. Besides cluster algebras of rank 2 and cluster algebras associated with triangulations of surfaces there are exactly 11 exceptional skew-symmetric cluster algebras of finite mutation type. More precisely, 9 of them are associated with root systems $E_6$, $E_7$, $E_8$, $\widetilde E_6$, $\widetilde E_7$, $\widetilde E_8$, $E_6^{(1,1)}$, $E_7^{(1,1)}$, $E_8^{(1,1)}$; two remaining were recently found by Derksen and Owen. We also describe a criterion which determines if a skew-symmetric cluster algebra is of finite mutation type, and discuss growth rate of cluster algebras.

On the properties of the exchange graph of a cluster algebra
Published in Math. Res. Lett. 15 (2008), 321--330 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a conjecture about the vertices and edges of the exchange graph of a cluster algebra $\A$ in two cases: when $\A$ is of geometric type and when $\A$ is arbitrary and its exchange matrix is nondegenerate. In the second case we also prove that the exchange graph does not depend on the coefficients of $\A$. Both conjectures were formulated recently by Fomin and Zelevinsky.
On double Hurwitz numbers in genus 0
Published in Adv. Math. 217 (2008), no. 1, 79-96 • View PublicationBIB
We study double Hurwitz numbers in genus zero counting the number of covers $\CP^1\to\CP^1$ with two branching points with a given branching behavior. By the recent result due to Goulden, Jackson and Vakil, these numbers are piecewise polynomials in the multiplicities of the preimages of the branching points. We describe the partition of the parameter space into polynomiality domains, called chambers, and provide an expression for the difference of two such polynomials for two neighboring chambers. Besides, we provide an explicit formula for the polynomial in a certain chamber called totally negative, which enables us to calculate double Hurwitz numbers in any given chamber as the polynomial for the totally negative chamber plus the sum of the differences between the neighboring polynomials along a path connecting the totally negative chamber with the given one.

Cluster algebras and triangulated surfaces. Part I: Cluster complexes
Published in Acta Mathematica, 201:83-146, 2008 • View PublicationBIB
We establish basic properties of cluster algebras associated with oriented bordered surfaces with marked points. In particular, we show that the underlying cluster complex of such a cluster algebra does not depend on the choice of coefficients, describe this complex explicitly in terms of "tagged triangulations" of the surface, and determine its homotopy type and its growth rate.

Stratified spaces formed by totally positive varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
By a theorem of A.Björner, for every interval $[u,v]$ in the Bruhat order of a Coxeter group $W$, there exists a stratified space whose strata are labeled by the elements of $[u,v]$, adjacency is described by the Bruhat order, and each closed stratum (resp., the boundary of each stratum) has the homology of a ball (resp., of a sphere). Answering a question posed by Björner, we suggest a natural geometric realization of these stratified spaces for a Weyl group $W$ of a semisimple Lie group $G$, and prove its validity in the case of the symmetric group. Our stratified spaces arise as links in the Bruhat decomposition of the totally nonnegative part of the unipotent radical of $G$.
Simply-laced Coxeter groups and groups generated by symplectic transvections
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let W be an arbitrary Coxeter group of simply-laced type (possibly infinite but of finite rank), u,v be any two elements in W, and i be a reduced word (of length m) for the pair (u,v) in the Coxeter group W\times W. We associate to i a subgroup Gamma_i in GL_m(Z) generated by symplectic transvections. We prove among other things that the subgroups corresponding to different reduced words for the same pair (u,v) are conjugate to each other inside GL_m(Z). We also generalize the enumeration result of the first three authors (see AG/9802093) by showing that, under certain assumptions on u and v, the number of Gamma_i(F_2)-orbits in F_2^m is equal to 3\times 2^s, where s is the number of simple reflections that appear in a reduced decomposition for u or v and F_2 is the two-element field.
