A Combinatorial Problem from Group Theory
Keller proposed a combinatorial conjecture on construction of an n-by-infinite matrix, which comes from showing the existence of many orbits of different sizes in certain linear group actions. He proved it for the case n=4, and we show that conjecture is true in the general case. We also propose a combinatorial game version of the conjecture which even further generalizes the problem.

The facets of the matroid polytope and the independent set polytope of a positroid
Published • View PublicationBIB
A positroid is a special case of a realizable matroid that arose from the study of the totally nonnegative part of the Grassmannian by Postnikov. In this paper, we study the facets of its matroid polytope and the independent set polytope. This allows one to describe the bases and independent sets directly from the decorated permutation, bypassing the use of the Grassmann necklace. We also describe a criterion for determining whether a given cyclic interval is a flat or not using the decorated permutation, then show how it applies to checking the concordancy of positroids.

The Selberg integral and Young books
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Selberg integral is an important integral first evaluated by Selberg in 1944. Stanley found a combinatorial interpretation of the Selberg integral in terms of permutations. In this paper, new combinatorial objects "Young books" are introduced and shown to have a connection with the Selberg integral. This connection gives an enumeration formula for Young books. It is shown that special cases of Young books become standard Young tableaux of various shapes: shifted staircases, squares, certain skew shapes, and certain truncated shapes. As a consequence, product formulas for the number of standard Young tableaux of these shapes are obtained.

Links in the complex of weakly separated collections
Published • View PublicationBIB
Plabic graphs are interesting combinatorial objects used to study the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. Faces of plabic graphs are labeled by $k$-element sets of positive integers, and a collection of such $k$-element sets are the face labels of a plabic graph if that collection forms a maximal weakly separated collection. There are moves that one can apply to plabic graphs, and thus to maximal weakly separated collections, analogous to mutations of seeds in cluster algebras. In this short note, we show that if two maximal weakly separated collections can be mutated from one to another, then one can do so while freezing the face labels they have in common.

Triangulations of $Δ_{n-1} \times Δ_{d-1}$ and Matching Ensembles
We suggest an axiom system for a collection of matchings that describes the triangulation of product of simplices.

We show that given a poset P and and a subposet Q, the integer points obtained by restricting linear extensions of P to Q can be explained via integer lattice points of a generalized permutohedron.

Weak Separation and Plabic Graphs

Leclerc and Zelevinsky described quasicommuting families of quantum minors in terms of a certain combinatorial condition, called weak separation. They conjectured that all maximal by inclusion weakly separated collections of minors have the same cardinality, and that they can be related to each other by a sequence of mutations. On the other hand, Postnikov studied total positivity on the Grassmannian. He described a stratification of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian into positroid strata, and constructed their parametrization using plabic graphs. In this paper we link the study of weak separation to plabeic graphs. We extend the notion of weak separation to positroids. We generalize the conjectures of Leclerc and Zelevinsky, and related ones of Scott, and prove them. We show that the maximal weakly separated collections in a positroid are in bijective correspondence with the plabic graphs. This correspondence allows us to use the combinatorial techniques of positroids and plabic graphs to prove the (generalized) purity and mutation connectedness conjectures.

Rainbow Graphs and Switching Classes

A rainbow graph is a graph that admits a vertex-coloring such that every color appears exactly once in the neighborhood of each vertex. We investigate some properties of rainbow graphs. In particular, we show that there is a bijection between the isomorphism classes of n-rainbow graphs on 2n vertices and the switching classes of graphs on n vertices.

Triangulations of $Δ_{n-1} \times Δ_{d-1}$ and Tropical Oriented Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Develin and Sturmfels showed that regular triangulations of $Δ_{n-1} \times Δ_{d-1}$ can be thought as tropical polytopes. Tropical oriented matroids were defined by Ardila and Develin, and were conjectured to be in bijection with all subdivisions of $Δ_{n-1} \times Δ_{d-1}$. In this paper, we show that any triangulation of $Δ_{n-1} \times Δ_{d-1}$ encodes a tropical oriented matroid. We also suggest a new class of combinatorial objects that may describe all subdivisions of a bigger class of polytopes.

Generalized permutohedra, h-vector of cotransversal matroids and pure O-sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Stanley has conjectured that the h-vector of a matroid complex is a pure O-sequence. We will prove this for cotransversal matroids by using generalized permutohedra. We construct a bijection between lattice points inside a r-dimensional convex polytope and bases of a rank r transversal matroid.

$\LE$-diagrams and totally positive bases inside the nonnegative Grassmannian
There is a cell decomposition of the nonnegative Grassmannian. For each cell, totally positive bases(TP-bases) is defined as the minimal set of Plücker variables such that all other nonzero Plücker variables in the cell can be expressed in those variables in a subtraction-free rational function. This is the generalization of the TP-bases defined for nonnegative part of $GL_k$ defined in \cite{FZ5}. For each cell, we have a $\LE$-diagram and a natural way to label the dots inside the diagram with Plücker variables. Those set of Plücker variables form a TP-bases of the cell. Using mutations coming from 3-term Plücker relation, we conjecture that they can be mutated to a special set of Plücker variable $§$. All other nonzero Plücker variables in the cell will be expressed as a subtraction-free Laurent polynomial in variables of $§$. We define TP-diagrams to express the transformation procedure in terms of moves on a diagram. We will prove the conjecture for certain class of cells called weakly-connected cells. Then we will study the connection with cluster algebras through lattice-path-matroid cells.

Contraction and restriction of positroids in terms of decorated permutations
A positroid is a matroid defined by Postnikov to study the cells in the non-negative part of the Grassmannian. They are in bijection with decorated permutations. We show a way to explain contraction and restriction of positroids in terms of decorated permutations.

Positroids and Schubert matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Postnikov gave a combinatorial description of the cells in a totally-nonnegative Grassmannian. These cells correspond to a special class of matroids called positroid. We prove his conjecture that a positroid is exactly an intersection of permuted Schubert matroids. This leads to a nice combinatorial description of positroids that is easily computable.

Bruhat order, smooth Schubert varieties, and hyperplane arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this article is to link Schubert varieties in the flag manifold with hyperplane arrangements. For a permutation, we construct a certain graphical hyperplane arrangement. We show that the generating function for regions of this arrangement coincides with the Poincare polynomial of the corresponding Schubert variety if and only if the Schubert variety is smooth. We give an explicit combinatorial formula for the Poincare polynomial. Our main technical tools are chordal graphs and perfect elimination orderings.
