A note on an application of discrete Morse theoretic techniques on the complex of disconnected graphs
Published in Examples and Counterexamples, Volume 7, June 2025, 100174 • View PublicationBIB
Robin Forman's highly influential 2002 paper A User's Guide to Discrete Morse Theory presents an overview of the subject in a very readable manner. As a proof of concept, the author determines the topology (homotopy type) of the abstract simplicial complex of disconnected graphs of order $n$ (which was previously done by Victor Vassiliev using classical topological methods) using discrete Morse theoretic techniques, which are purely combinatorial in nature. The techniques involve the construction (and verification) of a discrete gradient vector field on the complex. However, the verification part relies on a claim that doesn't seem to hold. In this note, we provide a couple of counterexamples against this specific claim. We also provide an alternative proof of the bigger claim that the constructed discrete vector field is indeed a gradient vector field. Our proof technique relies on a key observation which is not specific to the problem at hand, and thus is applicable while verifying a constructed discrete vector field is a gradient one in general.

Spectral monotonicity of the Hodge Laplacian
If K,G are finite abstract simplicial complexes and K is a subcomplex of G then the eigenvalues of the Hodge Laplacian of K are smaller or equal than the eigenvalues of the Hodge Laplacian of G, provided the eigenvalue lists are padded left.

Characteristic Topological Invariants
The higher characteristics w_m(G) for a finite abstract simplicial complex G are topological invariants that satisfy k-point Green function identities and can be computed in terms of Euler characteristic in the case of closed manifolds, where we give a new proof of w_m(G)=w_1(G). Also the sphere formula generalizes: for any simplicial complex, the total higher characteristics of unit spheres at even dimensional simplices is equal to the total higher characteristic of unit spheres at odd dimensional simplices.

The Sphere Formula
The sphere formula states that in an arbitrary finite abstract simplicial complex, the sum of the Euler characteristic of unit spheres centered at even-dimensional simplices is equal to the sum of the Euler characteristic of unit spheres centered at odd-dimensional simplices. It follows that if a geometry has constant unit sphere Euler characteristic, like a manifold, then all its unit spheres have zero Euler characteristic or the space itself has zero Euler characteristic. Especially, odd-dimensional manifolds have zero Euler characteristic, a fact usually verified either in algebraic topology using Poincaré duality together with Riemann-Hurwitz then deriving it from the existence of a Morse function, using that the Morse indices of the function and its negative add up to zero in odd dimensions. Gauss Bonnet also shows that odd-dimensional Dehn-Sommerville spaces have zero Euler characteristic because they have constant zero curvature. Zero curvature phenomenons can be understood integral geometrically as index expectation or as Dehn-Sommerville relations.

Dowker Complexes and filtrations on self-relations
Given a relation on $ X \times Y $, we can construct two abstract simplicial complexes called Dowker complexes. The geometric realizations of these simplicial complexes are homotopically equivalent. We show that if two relations are conjugate, then they have homotopically equivalent Dowker complexes. From a self-relation on $ X $, this is a directed graph, and we use the Dowker complexes to study their properties. We show that if two relations are shift equivalent, then, at some power of the relation, their Dowker complexes are homotopically equivalent. Finally, we define a new filtration based on Dowker complexes with different powers of a relation.

Finite topologies for finite geometries
Without leaving finite mathematics and using finite topological spaces only, we give a definition of homeomorphisms of finite abstract simplicial complexes or finite graphs. Besides exploring the definition in various contexts, we add some remarks like that the general Lefschetz formula works for any continuous map on any finite topological space. We also noted that any higher order Wu characteristic as well as their cohomology are topological invariants which are not homotopy invariants. Energy theorems allow to express these topological invariants in terms of interaction energies of local open sets.

Limits of Dense Simplicial Complexes
We develop a theory of limits for sequences of dense abstract simplicial complexes, where a sequence is considered convergent if its homomorphism densities converge. The limiting objects are represented by stacks of measurable [0,1]-valued functions on unit cubes of increasing dimension, each corresponding to a dimension of the abstract simplicial complex. We show that convergence in homomorphism density implies convergence in a cut-metric, and vice versa, as well as showing that simplicial complexes sampled from the limit objects closely resemble its structure. Applying this framework, we also partially characterize the convergence of nonuniform hypergraphs.

d-representability as an embedding problem
An abstract simplicial complex is said to be $d$-representable if it records the intersection pattern of a collection of convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$. In this paper, we show that $d$-representability of a simplicial complex is equivalent to the existence of a map with certain properties, from a closely related simplicial complex into $\mathbb{R}^d$. This equivalence suggests a framework for proving (and disproving) $d$-representability of simplicial complexes using topological methods such as applications of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem, which we begin to explore.

Dorpalen-Barry et al. proved Elser's conjecture about sign of Elser's number by interpreting them as certain sums of reduced Euler characteristics of an abstract simplicial complex known as $U$-nucleus complex. We prove a conjecture posed by them regarding the homology of $U$-nucleus complex.

On the Lefschetz Property for quotients by monomial ideals containing squares of variables
Published in Communications in Algebra, Volume 52 Issue 3, 2024, 1260-1270 • View PublicationBIB
Let $Δ$ be an (abstract) simplicial complex on $n$ vertices. One can define the Artinian monomial algebra $A(Δ) = \Bbbk[x_1, \ldots, x_n]/ \langle x_1^2, \ldots, x_n^2, I_Δ \rangle$, where $\Bbbk$ is a field of characteristic $0$ and $I_Δ$ is the Stanley-Reisner ideal associated to $Δ$. In this paper, we aim to characterize the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP) of $A(Δ)$ in terms of the simplicial complex $Δ$. We are able to completely analyze when WLP holds in degree $1$, complementing work by Migliore, Nagel and Schenck in [MNS2020]. We give a complete characterization of all $2$-dimensional pseudomanifolds $Δ$ such that $A(Δ)$ satisfies WLP. We also construct Artinian Gorenstein algebras that fail WLP by combining our results and the standard technique of Nagata idealization.

Geometric Embeddability of Complexes is $\exists \mathbb R$-complete
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the decision problem of determining whether a given (abstract simplicial) $k$-complex has a geometric embedding in $\mathbb R^d$ is complete for the Existential Theory of the Reals for all $d\geq 3$ and $k\in\{d-1,d\}$. This implies that the problem is polynomial time equivalent to determining whether a polynomial equation system has a real solution. Moreover, this implies NP-hardness and constitutes the first hardness results for the algorithmic problem of geometric embedding (abstract simplicial) complexes.

Bier spheres of extremal volume and generalized permutohedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Bier sphere $Bier(K) = K\ast_ΔK^\circ$, defined as the deleted join of a simplicial complex and its Alexander dual $K^\circ$, is a purely combinatorial object (abstract simplicial complex). Here we study a hidden geometry of Bier spheres by describing their natural geometric realizations, compute their volume, describe an effective criterion for their polytopality, and associate to $K$ a natural fan $Fan(K)$, related to the Braid fan. Along the way we establish a connection of Bier spheres of maximal volume with recent generalizations of the classical Van Kampen-Flores theorem and clarify the role of Bier spheres in the theory of generalized permutohedra.

Reconstructing simplicial polytopes from their graphs and affine $2$-stresses
Published • View PublicationBIB
A conjecture of Kalai from 1994 posits that for an arbitrary $2\leq k\leq \lfloor d/2 \rfloor$, the combinatorial type of a simplicial $d$-polytope $P$ is uniquely determined by the $(k-1)$-skeleton of $P$ (given as an abstract simplicial complex) together with the space of affine $k$-stresses on $P$. We establish the first non-trivial case of this conjecture, namely, the case of $k=2$. We also prove that for a general $k$, Kalai's conjecture holds for the class of $k$-neighborly polytopes.
Shellability and homology of $q$-complexes and $q$-matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a $q$-analogue of abstract simplicial complexes, called $q$-complexes, and discuss the notion of shellability for such complexes. It is shown that $q$-complexes formed by independent subspaces of a $q$-matroid are shellable. Further, we explicitly determine the homology of $q$-complexes corresponding to uniform $q$-matroids. We also outline some partial results concerning the determination of homology of arbitrary shellable $q$-complexes..

Automorphisms of tropical Hassett spaces
Published in Port. Math. 79 (2022), no. 1/2, pp. 163-197 • View PublicationBIB
Given an integer $g \geq 0$ and a weight vector $w \in \mathbb{Q}^n \cap (0, 1]^n$ satisfying $2g - 2 + \sum w_i > 0$, let $Δ_{g, w}$ denote the moduli space of $n$-marked, $w$-stable tropical curves of genus $g$ and volume one. We calculate the automorphism group $\mathrm{Aut}(Δ_{g, w})$ for $g \geq 1$ and arbitrary $w$, and we calculate the group $\mathrm{Aut}(Δ_{0, w})$ when $w$ is heavy/light. In both of these cases, we show that $\mathrm{Aut}(Δ_{g, w}) \cong \mathrm{Aut}(K_w)$, where $K_w$ is the abstract simplicial complex on $\{1, \ldots, n\}$ whose faces are subsets with $w$-weight at most $1$. We show that these groups are precisely the finite direct products of symmetric groups. The space $Δ_{g, w}$ may also be identified with the dual complex of the divisor of singular curves in the algebraic Hassett space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g, w}$. Following the work of Massarenti and Mella on the biregular automorphism group $\mathrm{Aut}(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g, w})$, we show that $\mathrm{Aut}(Δ_{g, w})$ is naturally identified with the subgroup of automorphisms which preserve the divisor of singular curves.

Domination numbers and noncover complexes of hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a hypergraph on a finite set $V$. A {\em cover} of $\mathcal{H}$ is a set of vertices that meets all edges of $\mathcal{H}$. If $W$ is not a cover of $\mathcal{H}$, then $W$ is said to be a {\em noncover} of $\mathcal{H}$. The {\em noncover complex} of $\mathcal{H}$ is the abstract simplicial complex whose faces are the noncovers of $\mathcal{H}$. In this paper, we study homological properties of noncover complexes of hypergraphs. In particular, we obtain an upper bound on their Leray numbers. The bound is in terms of hypergraph domination numbers. Also, our proof idea is applied to compute the homotopy type of the noncover complexes of certain uniform hypergraphs, called {\em tight paths} and {\em tight cycles}. This extends to hypergraphs known results on graphs.

Complexes, Graphs, Homotopy, Products and Shannon Capacity
A finite abstract simplicial complex G defines the Barycentric refinement graph phi(G) = (G,{ (a,b), a subset b or b subset a }) and the connection graph psi(G) = (G,{ (a,b), a intersected with b not empty }). We note here that both functors phi and psi from complexes to graphs are invertible on the image (Theorem 1) and that G,phi(G),psi(G) all have the same automorphism group and that the Cartesian product of G corresponding to the Stanley-Reisner product of phi(G) and the strong Shannon product of psi(G), have the product automorphism groups. Second, we see that if G is a Barycentric refinement, then phi(G) and psi(G) are graph homotopic (Theorem 2). Third, if gamma is the geometric realization functor, assigning to a complex or to a graph the geometric realization of its clique complex, then gamma(G) and gamma(phi(G)) and gamma(psi(G)) are all classically homotopic for a Barycentric refined simplicial complex G (Theorem 3). The Barycentric assumption is necessary in Theorem 2 and 3. There is compatibility with Cartesian products of complexes which manifests in the strong graph product of connection graphs: if two graphs A,A' are homotopic and B,B' are homotopic, then A . B is homotopic to A' . B' (Theorem 4) leading to a commutative ring of homotopy classes of graphs. Finally, we note (Theorem 5) that for all simplicial complexes G as well as product G=G_1 x G_2 ... x G_k, the Shannon capacity Theta(psi(G)) of psi(G) is equal to the number m of zero-dimensional sets in G. An explicit Lowasz umbrella in R^m leads to the Lowasz number theta(G) leq m and so Theta(psi(G))=theta(psi(G))=m making Theta compatible with disjoint union addition and strong multiplication.

Discrete-to-Continuous Extensions: Lovász extension and Morse theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
This is the first of a series of papers that develop a systematic bridge between constructions in discrete mathematics and the corresponding continuous analogs. In this paper, we establish an equivalence between Forman's discrete Morse theory on a simplicial complex and the continuous Morse theory (in the sense of any known non-smooth Morse theory) on the associated order complex via the Lovász extension. Furthermore, we propose a new version of the Lusternik-Schnirelman category on abstract simplicial complexes to bridge the classical Lusternik-Schnirelman theorem and its discrete analog on finite complexes. More generally, we can suggest a discrete Morse theory on hypergraphs by employing piecewise-linear (PL) Morse theory and Lovász extension, hoping to provide new tools for exploring the structure of hypergraphs.

Complexes of graphs with bounded independence number
Published in Israel Journal of Mathematics, Volume 249 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph and $n$ a positive integer. Let $I_n(G)$ be the abstract simplicial complex whose simplices are the subsets of $V$ that do not contain an independent set of size $n$ in $G$. We study the collapsibility numbers of the complexes $I_n(G)$ for various classes of graphs, focusing on the class of graphs with maximum degree bounded by $Δ$. As an application, we obtain the following result: Let $G$ be a claw-free graph with maximum degree at most $Δ$. Then, every collection of $\left\lfloor\left(\fracΔ{2}+1\right)(n-1)\right\rfloor+1$ independent sets in $G$ has a rainbow independent set of size $n$.

Poincare Hopf for vector fields on graphs
We generalize the Poincare-Hopf theorem sum_v i(v) = X(G) to vector fields on a finite simple graph (V,E) with Whitney complex G. To do so, we define a directed simplicial complex as a finite abstract simplicial complex equipped with a bundle map F: G to V telling which vertex T(x) in x dominates the simplex x. The index i(v) of a vertex v is defined as X(F^-1(v)), where X is the Euler characteristic. We get a flow by adding a section map F: V to G. The resulting map T on G is a discrete model for a differential equation x'=F(x) on a compact manifold. Examples of directed complexes are defined by Whitney complexes defined by digraphs with no cyclic triangles or gradient fields on finite simple graphs defined by a locally injective function. The result extends to simplicial complexes equipped with an energy function H:G to Z that implements a divisor. The index sum is then the total energy.
