Random Abstract Simplicial Complexes Reduction
Random abstract simplicial complex representation provides a mathematical description of wireless networks and their topology. In order to reduce the energy consumption in this type of network, we intend to reduce the number of network nodes without modifying neither the connectivity nor the coverage of the network. In this paper, we present a reduction algorithm that lower the number of points of an abstract simplicial complex in an optimal order while maintaining its topology. Then, we study the complexity of such an algorithm for a network simulated by a binomial point process and represented by a Vietoris-Rips complex.

We generalize the matroid-theoretic approach to greedy algorithms to the setting of poset matroids, in the sense of Barnabei, Nicoletti and Pezzoli (1998) [BNP]. We illustrate our result by providing a generalization of Kruskal algorithm (which finds a minimum spanning subtree of a weighted graph) to abstract simplicial complexes.
How to partition or count an abstract simplicial complex, given its facets
Given are the facets of an abstract (finite) simplicial complex SC. We show how to partition SC into few pieces, each one compactly encoded by the use of wildcards. Such a representation is useful for the optimization of a target function SC -> Z, as well as in combinatorial commutative algebra and Frequent Set Mining. Merely calculating the face-numbers of SC can be done faster than partitioning SC. Our method compares favorably to inclusion-exclusion and binary decision diagram

We define the Coxeter cochain complex of a Coxeter group (G,S) with coefficients in a Z[G]-module A. This is closely related to the complex of simplicial cochains on the abstract simplicial complex I(S) of the commuting subsets of S. We give some representative computations of Coxeter cohomology and explain the connection between the Coxeter cohomology for groups of type A, the (singular) homology of certain configuration spaces, and the (Tor) homology of certain local Artin rings.
The local $h$-vector of the cluster subdivision of a simplex

The cluster complex $Δ(Φ)$ is an abstract simplicial complex, introduced by Fomin and Zelevinsky for a finite root system $Φ$. The positive part of $Δ(Φ)$ naturally defines a simplicial subdivision of the simplex on the vertex set of simple roots of $Φ$. The local $h$-vector of this subdivision, in the sense of Stanley, is computed and the corresponding $γ$-vector is shown to be nonnegative. Combinatorial interpretations to the entries of the local $h$-vector and the corresponding $γ$-vector are provided for the classical root systems, in terms of noncrossing partitions of types $A$ and $B$. An analogous result is given for the barycentric subdivision of a simplex.

We consider the problem of computing the Euler characteristic of an abstract simplicial complex given by its vertices and facets. We show that this problem is #P-complete and present two new practical algorithms for computing Euler characteristic. The two new algorithms are derived using combinatorial commutative algebra and we also give a second description of them that requires no algebra. We present experiments showing that the two new algorithms can be implemented to be faster than previous Euler characteristic implementations by a large margin.
Simplicial Complexes Obtained from Qualitative Probability Orders

In this paper we inititate the study of abstract simplicial complexes which are initial segments of qualitative probability orders. This is a natural class that contains the threshold complexes and is contained in the shifted complexes, but is equal to neither. In particular we construct a qualitative probability order on 26 atoms that has an initial segment which is not a threshold simplicial complex. Although 26 is probably not the minimal number for which such example exists we provide some evidence that it cannot be much smaller. We prove some necessary conditions for this class and make a conjecture as to a characterization of them. The conjectured characterization relies on some ideas from cooperative game theory.
Vertex colorings of simplicial complexes
We define an (r,s)-coloring of an abstract simplicial complex to be a coloring using r colors of the vertices so that in any simplex at most s vertices have the same color. We translate the problem of finding an (r,s)-coloring of a given simplex to a topological problem and to a ring theoretic problem. The topological version involves vector bundles over Davis--Januszkiewicz spaces and the algebraic one involves factorizations in Stanley-Reisner rings.

simpcomp is an extension (a so called package) to GAP, the well known system for computational discrete algebra. The package enables the user to compute numerous properties of (abstract) simplicial complexes, provides functions to construct new complexes from existing ones and an extensive library of triangulations of manifolds.

In this paper, we give an algebra-combinatorics formula of the Möbius transform for an abstract simplicial complex $K$ on $[m]=\{1, ..., m\}$ in terms of the Betti numbers of the Stanley-Reisner face ring of $K$. Furthermore, we employ a way of compressing $K$ to estimate the lower bound of the sum of those Betti numbers by using this formula. As an application, associating with the moment-angle complex $\mathcal{Z}_K$ (resp. real moment-angle complex ${\Bbb R}\mathcal{Z}_K$) of $K$, we show that the Halperin-Carlsson conjecture holds for $\mathcal{Z}_K$ (resp. ${\Bbb R}\mathcal{Z}_K$) under the restriction of the natural $T^m$-action on $\mathcal{Z}_K$ (resp. $({\Bbb Z}_2)^m$-action on ${\Bbb R}\mathcal{Z}_K$).
Complexes of trees and nested set complexes

We exhibit an identity of abstract simplicial complexes between the well-studied complex of trees and the reduced minimal nested set complex of the partition lattice. We conclude that the order complex of the partition lattice can be obtained from the complex of trees by a sequence of stellar subdivisions. We provide an explicit cohomology basis for the complex of trees that emerges naturally from this context.
Motivated by these results, we review the generalization of complexes of trees to complexes of $k$-trees by Hanlon, and we propose yet another, in the context of nested set complexes more natural, generalization.

We introduce toric complexes as polyhedral complexes consisting of rational cones together with a set of integral generators for each cone, and we define their associated face rings. Abstract simplicial complexes and rational fans can be considered as toric complexes, and the face ring for toric complexes extend Stanley and Reisner's face ring for abstract simplicial complexes and Stanley's face ring for rational fans. Given a toric complex with defining ideal I for the face ring we give a geometrical interpretation of the initial ideals of I with respect to weight orders in terms of subdivisions of the toric complex generalizing a theorem of Sturmfels. We apply our results to study edgewise subdivisions of abstract simplicial complexes.
