Induced and non-induced forbidden subposet problems
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 22 (1) P1.30, 2015 • Search Publication
The problem of determining the maximum size $La(n,P)$ that a $P$-free subposet of the Boolean lattice $B_n$ can have, attracted the attention of many researchers, but little is known about the induced version of these problems. In this paper we determine the asymptotic behavior of $La^*(n,P)$, the maximum size that an induced $P$-free subposet of the Boolean lattice $B_n$ can have for the case when $P$ is the complete two-level poset $K_{r,t}$ or the complete multi-level poset $K_{r,s_1,\dots,s_j,t}$ when all $s_i$'s either equal 4 or are large enough and satisfy an extra condition. We also show lower and upper bounds for the non-induced problem in the case when $P$ is the complete three-level poset $K_{r,s,t}$. These bounds determine the asymptotics of $La(n,K_{r,s,t})$ for some values of $s$ independently of the values of $r$ and $t$.

Set families with forbidden subposets

Let $F$ be a family of subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$. We say that $F$ is $P$-free if the inclusion order on $F$ does not contain $P$ as an induced subposet. The \emph{Turán function} of $P$, denoted $π^*(n,P)$, is the maximum size of a $P$-free family of subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$. We show that $π^*(n,P) \le (4r + O(\sqrt{r}))\binom{n}{n/2}$ if $P$ is an $r$-element poset of height at most $2$. We also show that $π^*(n,S_r) = (r+O(\sqrt{r}))\binom{n}{n/2}$ where $S_r$ is the standard example on $2r$ elements, and that $π^*(n,B_2) \le (2.583+o(1))\binom{n}{n/2}$, where $B_2$ is the $2$-dimensional Boolean lattice.

Incomparable copies of a poset in the Boolean lattice
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $B_n$ be the poset generated by the subsets of $[n]$ with the inclusion as relation and let $P$ be a finite poset. We want to embed $P$ into $B_n$ as many times as possible such that the subsets in different copies are incomparable. The maximum number of such embeddings is asymptotically determined for all finite posets $P$ as $\frac{n \choose \lfloor n/2\rfloor}{M(P)}$, where $M(P)$ denotes the minimal size of the convex hull of a copy of $P$. We discuss both weak and strong (induced) embeddings.

Packing Posets in the Boolean Lattice
Published • View PublicationBIB
We are interested in maximizing the number of pairwise unrelated copies of a poset $P$ in the family of all subsets of $[n]$. We prove that for any $P$ the maximum number of unrelated copies of $P$ is asymptotic to a constant times the largest binomial coefficient. Moreover, the constant has the form $\frac{1}{c(P)}$, where $c(P)$ is the size of the smallest convex closure over all embeddings of $P$ into the Boolean lattice.

Contributions to the theory of de Bruijn cycles
A de Bruijn cycle is a cyclic listing of length A, of a collection of A combinatorial objects, so that each object appears exactly once as a set of consecutive elements in the cycle. In this paper, we show the power of de Bruijn's original theorem, namely that the cycles bearing his name exist for n-letter words on a k-letter alphabet for all values of k,n, to prove that we can create de Bruijn cycles for the assignment of elements of [n]={1,2,....,n} to the sets in any labeled subposet of the Boolean lattice; de Bruijn's theorem corresponds to the case when the subposet in question consists of a single ground element. The landmark work of Chung, Diaconis, and Graham extended the agenda of finding de Bruijn cycles to possibly the next most natural set of combinatorial objects, namely k-subsets of [n]. In this area, important contributions have been those of Hurlbert and Rudoy. Here we follow the direction of Blanca and Godbole, who proved that, in a suitable encoding, de Bruijn cycles can be created for the subsets of [n$ of size in the interval [s,t]; 0<=s<t<=n$. In this paper we generalize this result to exhibit existence of de Bruijn cycles for words with weight between s and t, where these parameters are suitably restricted.
Supersaturation in the Boolean lattice
Published in Integers 14A (2014): #A4 • Search Publication
We prove a "supersaturation-type" extension of both Sperner's Theorem (1928) and its generalization by Erdos (1945) to k-chains. Our result implies that a largest family whose size is x more than the size of a largest k-chain free family and that contains the minimum number of k-chains is the family formed by taking the middle (k-1) rows of the Boolean lattice and x elements from the k-th middle row. We prove our result using the symmetric chain decomposition method of de Bruijn, van Ebbenhorst Tengbergen, and Kruyswijk (1951).

Proper Mergings of Stars and Chains are Counted by Sums of Antidiagonals in Certain Convolution Arrays -- The Details
Published • View PublicationBIB
A proper merging of two disjoint quasi-ordered sets $P$ and $Q$ is a quasi-order on the union of $P$ and $Q$ such that the restriction to $P$ or $Q$ yields the original quasi-order again and such that no elements of $P$ and $Q$ are identified. In this article, we determine the number of proper mergings in the case where $P$ is a star (i.e. an antichain with a smallest element adjoined), and $Q$ is a chain. We show that the lattice of proper mergings of an $m$-antichain and an $n$-chain, previously investigated by the author, is a quotient lattice of the lattice of proper mergings of an $m$-star and an $n$-chain, and we determine the number of proper mergings of an $m$-star and an $n$-chain by counting the number of congruence classes and by determining their cardinalities. Additionally, we compute the number of Galois connections between certain modified Boolean lattices and chains.

An incidence Hopf Algebra of Convex Geometries
A lattice L is "meet-distributive" if for each element of L, the meets of the elements directly below it form a Boolean lattice. These objects are in bijection with "convex geometries", which are an abstract model of convexity. Do they give rise to an incidence Hopf algebra of convex geometries?

The extended permutohedron on a transitive binary relation
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a given transitive binary relation e on a set E, the transitive closures of open (i.e., co-transitive in e) sets, called the regular closed subsets, form an ortholattice Reg(e), the extended permutohedron on e. This construction, which contains the poset Clop(e) of all clopen sets, is a common generalization of known notions such as the generalized permutohedron on a partially ordered set on the one hand, and the bipartition lattice on a set on the other hand. We obtain a precise description of the completely join-irreducible (resp., completely meet-irreducible) elements of Reg(e) and the arrow relations between them. In particular, we prove that (1) Reg(e) is the Dedekind-MacNeille completion of the poset Clop(e); (2) Every open subset of e is a set-theoretic union of completely join-irreducible clopen subsets of e; (3) Clop(e) is a lattice iiff every regular closed subset of e is clopen, iff e contains no "square" configuration, iff Reg(e)=Clop(e); (4) If e is finite, then Reg(e) is pseudocomplemented iff it is semidistributive, iff it is a bounded homomorphic image of a free lattice, iff e is a disjoint sum of antisymmetric transitive relations and two-element full relations. We illustrate the strength of our results by proving that, for n greater than or equal to 3, the congruence lattice of the lattice Bip(n) of all bipartitions of an n-element set is obtained by adding a new top element to a Boolean lattice with n2^{n-1} atoms. We also determine the factors of the minimal subdirect decomposition of Bip(n).

Symmetric Chain Decompositions of Quotients of Chain Products by Wreath Products
Published • View PublicationBIB
Subgroups of the symmetric group $S_n$ act on powers of chains $C^n$ by permuting coordinates, and induce automorphisms of the ordered sets $C^n$. The quotients defined are candidates for symmetric chain decompositions. We establish this for some families of groups in order to enlarge the collection of subgroups $G$ of the symmetric group $S_n$ for which the quotient $B_n/G$ obtained from the $G$-orbits on the Boolean lattice $B_n$ is a symmetric chain order. The methods are also used to provide an elementary proof that quotients of powers of SCOs by cyclic groups are SCOs.

Counting Proper Mergings of Chains and Antichains
Published in Discrete Mathematics 327 (2014), pages 118-129 • View PublicationBIB
A proper merging of two disjoint quasi-ordered sets $P$ and $Q$ is a quasi-order on the union of $P$ and $Q$ such that the restriction to $P$ and $Q$ yields the original quasi-order again and such that no elements of $P$ and $Q$ are identified. In this article, we consider the cases where $P$ and $Q$ are chains, where $P$ and $Q$ are antichains, and where $P$ is an antichain and $Q$ is a chain. We give formulas that determine the number of proper mergings in all three cases, and introduce two new bijections from proper mergings of two chains to plane partitions and from proper mergings of an antichain and a chain to monotone colorings of complete bipartite digraphs. Additionally, we use these bijections to count the Galois connections between two chains, and between a chain and a Boolean lattice respectively.

On homomorphisms from the Hamming cube to {\bf Z}
Write ${\cal F}$ for the set of homomorphisms from $\{0,1\}^d$ to ${\bf Z}$ which send $\underline{0}$ to 0 (think of members of ${\cal F}$ as labellings of $\{0,1\}^d$ in which adjacent strings get labels differing by exactly 1), and ${\cal F}_i$ for those which take on exactly $i$ values. We give asymptotic formulae for $|{\cal F}|$ and $|{\cal F}_i|$. In particular, we show that the probability that a uniformly chosen member ${\bf f}$ of ${\cal F}$ takes more than five values tends to 0 as $d \rightarrow \infty$. This settles a conjecture of J. Kahn. Previously, Kahn had shown that there is a constant $b$ such that ${\bf f}$ a.s. takes at most $b$ values. This in turn verified a conjecture of I. Benjamini {\em et al.}, that for each $t > 0$, ${\bf f}$ a.s. takes at most $td$ values. Determining $|{\cal F}|$ is equivalent both to counting the number of rank functions on the Boolean lattice $2^{[d]}$ (functions $f \colon 2^{[d]} \longrightarrow {\bf N}$ satisfying $f(\emptyset)=0$ and $f(A) \leq f(A \cup x) \leq f(A)+1$ for all $A \in 2^{[d]}$ and $x \in [d]$) and to counting the number of proper 3-colourings of the discrete cube (i.e., the number of homomorphisms from $\{0,1\}^d$ to $K_3$, the complete graph on 3 vertices). Our proof uses the main lemma from Kahn's proof of constant range, together with some combinatorial approximation techniques introduced by A. Sapozhenko.

On diamond-free subposets of the Boolean lattice
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Boolean lattice of dimension two, also known as the diamond, consists of four distinct elements with the following property: $A\subset B,C\subset D$. A diamond-free family in the $n$-dimensional Boolean lattice is a subposet such that no four elements form a diamond. Note that elements $B$ and $C$ may or may not be related. There is a diamond-free family in the $n$-dimensional Boolean lattice of size $(2-o(1)){n\choose\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$. In this paper, we prove that any diamond-free family in the $n$-dimensional Boolean lattice has size at most $(2.25+o(1)){n\choose\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$. Furthermore, we show that the so-called Lubell function of a diamond-free family in the $n$-dimensional Boolean lattice is at most $2.25+o(1)$, which is asymptotically best possible.

On Stanley's Inequalities for Character Multiplicities
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G be a group of automorphisms of a ranked poset Q and let N_{k} denote the number of orbits on the elements of rank k in Q. What can be said about the N_{k} for standard posets, such as finite projective spaces or the Boolean lattice? We discuss the connection of this question to the representation theory of the group, and in particular to the inequalities of Livingstone-Wagner and Stanley. We show that these are special cases of more general inequalities which depend on the prime divisors of the group order. The new inequalities often yield stronger bounds depending on the order of the group.

Extending the Tamari lattice to some compositions of species
Published • View PublicationBIB
An extension of the Tamari lattice to the multiplihedra is discussed, along with projections to the composihedra and the Boolean lattice. The multiplihedra and composihedra are sequences of polytopes that arose in algebraic topology and category theory. Here we describe them in terms of the composition of combinatorial species. We define lattice structures on their vertices, indexed by painted trees, which are extensions of the Tamari lattice and projections of the weak order on the permutations. The projections from the weak order to the Tamari lattice and the Boolean lattice are shown to be different from the classical ones. We generalize the Tamari lattice to graph tubings--as is also described by Ronco. We review how lattice structures often interact with the Hopf algebra structures, following Aguiar and Sottile who discovered the applications of Mobius inversion on the Tamari lattice to the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebra.

Antichain cutsets of strongly connected posets

Rival and Zaguia showed that the antichain cutsets of a finite Boolean lattice are exactly the level sets. We show that a similar characterization of antichain cutsets holds for any strongly connected poset of locally finite height. As a corollary, we get such a characterization for semimodular lattices, supersolvable lattices, Bruhat orders, locally shellable lattices, and many more. We also consider a generalization to strongly connected hypergraphs having finite edges.

Three layer $Q_2$-free families in the Boolean lattice
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the largest $Q_2$-free family of subsets of $[n]$ which contains sets of at most three different sizes has at most $(3 + 2\sqrt {3})N/3 + o(N) \approx 2.1547N + o(N)$ members, where $N = {n \choose {\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}}$. This improves an earlier bound of $2.207N + o(N)$ by Axenovich, Manske, and Martin.
Some Quotients of the Boolean Lattice are Symmetric Chain Orders
Published • View PublicationBIB
R. Canfield has conjectured that for all subgroups G of the automorphism group of the Boolean lattice B(n) (which can be regarded as the symmetric group S(n)) the quotient order B(n)/G is a symmetric chain order. We provide a straightforward proof of a generalization of a result of K. K. Jordan: namely, B(n)/G is an SCO whenever G is generated by powers of disjoint cycles. The symmetric chain decompositions of Greene and Kleitman provide the basis for partitions of these quotients.

Sublattices of associahedra and permutohedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Grätzer asked in 1971 for a characterization of sublattices of Tamari lattices (associahedra). A natural candidate was coined by McKenzie in 1972 with the notion of a bounded homomorphic image of a free lattice---in short, bounded lattice. Urquhart proved in 1978 that every associahedron is bounded (thus so are its sublattices). Geyer conjectured in 1994 that every finite bounded lattice embeds into some associahedron. We disprove Geyer's conjecture, by introducing an infinite collection of lattice-theoretical identities that hold in every associahedron, but not in every finite bounded lattice. Among those finite counterexamples, there are the permutohedron on four letters P(4), and in fact two of its subdirectly irreducible retracts, which are Cambrian lattices of type A. For natural numbers m and n, we denote by B(m,n) the (bounded) lattice obtained by doubling a join of m atoms in an (m+n)-atom Boolean lattice. We prove that B(m,n) embeds into an associahedron iff min(m,n) is less than or equal to 1, and that B(m,n) embeds into a permutohedron iff min(m,n) is less than or equal to 2. In particular, B(3,3) cannot be embedded into any permutohedron. Nevertheless we prove that B(3,3) is a homomorphic image of a sublattice of the permutohedron on 12 letters.

Note on antichain cutsets in discrete semimodular lattices
The characterization of level sets of finite Boolean lattices as antichain cutsets, due to Rival and Zaguia, is seen to hold in all discrete semimodular lattices.
