On Young diagrams, flips and cluster algebras of type A
We give a new simple description of the canonical bijection between the set of triangulations of n-gon and some set of Young diagrams. Using this description, we find flip transformations on this set of Young diagrams which correspond to the edges of the associahedron. This construction is generalized on the set of all Young diagrams and the corresponding infinite-dimensional associahedron is defined. We consider its relation to the properly defined infinite-type version of the cluster algebras of type A and check some properties of these algebras inherited from their finite-type counterparts. We investigate links between these algebras and cluster categories of infinite Dynkin type $A_\infty$ introduced by Holm and Jorgensen.

KP solitons and total positivity for the Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
Soliton solutions of the KP equation have been studied since 1970, when Kadomtsev and Petviashvili proposed a two-dimensional dispersive wave equation now known as the KP equation. It is well-known that one can use the Wronskian method to construct a soliton solution to the KP equation from each point of the real Grassmannian Gr_kn. More recently several authors have studied the regular solutions that one obtains in this way: these come from points of the totally non-negative part of the Grassmannian (Gr_kn)_{>= 0}. In this paper we exhibit a surprising connection between the theory of total positivity for the Grassmannian, and the structure of regular soliton solutions to the KP equation. By exploiting this connection, we obtain new insights into the structure of KP solitons, as well as new interpretations of the combinatorial objects indexing cells of (Gr_kn)_{>= 0}. In particular, we completely classify the spatial patterns of the soliton solutions coming from (Gr_2n)_{>0}, as well as those coming from (Gr_kn)_{>= 0} when the absolute value of the time parameter is sufficiently large. We also demonstrate an intriguing connection between soliton graphs for (Gr_kn)_{>0} and the cluster algebras of Fomin and Zelevinsky, and we use this connection to solve the inverse problem for generic KP solitons coming from (Gr_kn)_{>0}. Finally we construct all the soliton graphs for (Gr_2n)_{>0} using the triangulations of n-gon.

KP solitons, total positivity, and cluster algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Soliton solutions of the KP equation have been studied since 1970, when Kadomtsev and Petviashvili proposed a two-dimensional nonlinear dispersive wave equation now known as the KP equation. It is well-known that the Wronskian approach to the KP equation provides a method to construct soliton solutions. The regular soliton solutions that one obtains in this way come from points of the totally non-negative part of the Grassmannian. In this paper we explain how the theory of total positivity and cluster algebras provides a framework for understanding these soliton solutions to the KP equation. We then use this framework to give an explicit construction of certain soliton contour graphs, and solve the inverse problem for soliton solutions coming from the totally positive part of the Grassmannian.

Positivity in Quantum Cluster Algebras and Flags of Valued Quiver Representations
In this paper we give a direct proof of the positivity conjecture for adapted quantum cluster variables. Moreover, our process allows one to explicitly compute formulas for all adapted cluster monomials and certain ordered products of adapted cluster monomials. In particular, we describe all cluster monomials in cluster algebras and quantum cluster algebras of rank 2. One may obtain similar formulas for all finite type cluster monomials. The above results are achieved by computing explicit set-theoretic decompositions of Grassmannians of subrepresentations in adapted valued quiver representations into a disjoint union of products of standard vector space Grassmannians. We actually prove a more general result which should be of independent interest: we compute these decompositions for arbitrary flags of subrepresentations in adapted valued quiver representations. This implies the existence of counting polynomials for the number of points in these sets over different finite fields. Using this we extend the results of \cite{rupel} to quantum cluster algebras $\Acal_q(Q,\bfd)$, where $q$ is an indeterminate.

The solution of the quantum $A_1$ T-system for arbitrary boundary
Published • View PublicationBIB
We solve the quantum version of the $A_1$ $T$-system by use of quantum networks. The system is interpreted as a particular set of mutations of a suitable (infinite-rank) quantum cluster algebra, and Laurent positivity follows from our solution. As an application we re-derive the corresponding quantum network solution to the quantum $A_1$ $Q$-system and generalize it to the fully non-commutative case. We give the relation between the quantum $T$-system and the quantum lattice Liouville equation, which is the quantized $Y$-system.

A compendium on the cluster algebra and quiver package in sage
This is the compendium of the cluster algebra and quiver package for sage. The purpose of this package is to provide a platform to work with cluster algebras in graduate courses and to further develop the theory by working on examples, by gathering data, and by exhibiting and testing conjectures. In this compendium, we include the relevant theory to introduce the reader to cluster algebras assuming no prior background; this exposition has been written to be accessible to an interested undergraduate. Throughout this compendium, we include examples that the user can run in the sage notebook or command line, and then close with a detailed description of the data structures and methods in this package.

On cluster theory and quantum dilogarithm identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
These are expanded notes from three survey lectures given at the 14th International Conference on Representations of Algebras (ICRA XIV) held in Tokyo in August 2010. We first study identities between products of quantum dilogarithm series associated with Dynkin quivers following Reineke. We then examine similar identities for quivers with potential and link them to Fomin-Zelevinsky's theory of cluster algebras. Here we mainly follow ideas due to Bridgeland, Fock-Goncharov, Kontsevich-Soibelman and Nagao.

Subquivers of mutation-acyclic quivers are mutation-acyclic
Quiver mutation plays a crucial role in the definition of cluster algebras by Fomin and Zelevinsky. It induces an equivalence relation on the set of all quivers without loops and two-cycles. A quiver is called mutation-acyclic if it is mutation-equivalent to an acyclic quiver. This note gives a proof that full subquivers of mutation-acyclic quivers are mutation-acyclic.

Quantum loop algebras, quiver varieties, and cluster algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
These notes reflect the contents of three lectures given at the workshop of the 14th International Conference on Representations of Algebras (ICRA XIV), held in August 2010 in Tokyo. We first provide an introduction to quantum loop algebras and their finite-dimensional representations. We explain in particular Nakajima's geometric description of the irreducible q-characters in terms of graded quiver varieties. We then present a recent attempt to understand the tensor structure of the category of finite- dimensional representations by means of cluster algebras.

Cluster categories
Published • View PublicationBIB
Cluster algebras were introduced by Fomin-Zelevinsky in 2002 in order to give a combinatorial framework for phenomena occurring in the context of algebraic groups. Cluster algebras also have links to a wide range of other subjects, including the representation theory of finite dimensional algebras, as first discovered by Marsh- Reineke-Zelevinsky. Modifying module categories over hereditary algebras, cluster categories were introduced in work with Buan-Marsh-Reineke-Todorov in order to "categorify" the essential ingredients in the definition of cluster algebras in the acyclic case. They were shown to be triangulated by Keller. Related work was done by Geiss-Leclerc-Schröer using preprojective algebras of Dynkin type. In work by many authors there have been further developments, leading to feedback to cluster algebras, new interesting classes of finite dimensional algebras, and the investigation of categories of Calabi-Yau dimension $2.$

The Discrete Fundamental Group of the Associahedron, and the Exchange Module
Published • View PublicationBIB
The associahedron is an object that has been well studied and has numerous applications, particularly in the theory of operads, the study of non-crossing partitions, lattice theory and more recently in the study of cluster algebras. We approach the associahedron from the point of view of discrete homotopy theory. We study the abelianization of the discrete fundamental group, and show that it is free abelian of rank $\binom{n+2}{4}$. We also find a combinatorial description for a basis of this rank. We also introduce the exchange module of the type $A_n$ cluster algebra, used to model the relations in the cluster algebra. We use the discrete fundamental group to the study of exchange module, and show that it is also free abelian of rank $\binom{n+2}{3}$.

Hom-configurations and noncrossing partitions
Let Q be a Dynkin quiver. The bounded derived category of the path algebra of Q has an autoequivalence given by the composition of the Auslander-Reiten translate and the square of the shift functor. We study maximal Hom-free sets in the corresponding orbit category C(Q). We prove that these sets are in bijection with periodic combinatorial configurations, as introduced by Riedtmann, certain Hom<=0-configurations, studied by Buan, Reiten and Thomas, and noncrossing partitions of the Coxeter group associated to Q which are not contained in any proper standard parabolic subgroup. Note that Reading has proved that these noncrossing partitions are in bijection with positive clusters in the associated cluster algebra. Finally, we give a definition of mutations of maximal Hom-free sets in C(Q) and prove that the graph of these mutations is connected.

Groupes de réflexion, géométrie du discriminant et partitions non-croisées
Reflection groups, geometry of the discriminant and noncrossing partitions. When W is a well-generated complex reflection group, the noncrossing partition lattice NCP_W of type W is a very rich combinatorial object, extending the notion of noncrossing partitions of an n-gon. This structure appears in several algebraic setups (dual braid monoid, cluster algebras...). Many combinatorial properties of NCP_W are proved case-by-case, using the classification of reflection groups. It is the case for Chapoton's formula, expressing the number of multichains of a given length in the lattice NCP_W, in terms of the invariant degrees of W. This thesis work is motivated by the search for a geometric explanation of this formula, which could lead to a uniform understanding of the connections between the combinatorics of NCP_W and the invariant theory of W. The starting point is to use the Lyashko-Looijenga covering (LL), based on the geometry of the discriminant of W. In the first chapter, some topological constructions of Bessis are refined, allowing to relate the fibers of LL with block factorisations of a Coxeter element. Then we prove a transitivity property for the Hurwitz action of the braid group B_n on certain factorisations. Chapter 2 is devoted to certain finite polynomial extensions, and to properties about their Jacobians and discriminants. In Chapter 3, these results are applied to the extension defined by the covering LL. We deduce --- with a case-free proof --- formulas for the number of submaximal factorisations of a Coxeter element in W, in terms of the homogeneous degrees of the irreducible components of the discriminant and Jacobian for LL.

Discrete integrable systems, positivity, and continued fraction rearrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this review article, we present a unified approach to solving discrete, integrable, possibly non-commutative, dynamical systems, including the $Q$- and $T$-systems based on $A_r$. The initial data of the systems are seen as cluster variables in a suitable cluster algebra, and may evolve by local mutations. We show that the solutions are always expressed as Laurent polynomials of the initial data with non-negative integer coefficients. This is done by reformulating the mutations of initial data as local rearrangements of continued fractions generating some particular solutions, that preserve manifest positivity. We also show how these techniques apply as well to non-commutative settings.

Categorification of a frieze pattern determinant

Broline, Crowe and Isaacs have computed the determinant of a matrix associated to a Conway-Coxeter frieze pattern. We generalise their result to the corresponding frieze pattern of cluster variables arising from the Fomin-Zelevinsky cluster algebra of type A. We give a representation-theoretic interpretation of this result in terms of certain configurations of indecomposable objects in the root category of type A.

Cluster algebras arising from cluster tubes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the cluster algebras arising from cluster tubes with rank bigger than $1$. Cluster tubes are $2-$Calabi-Yau triangulated categories which contain no cluster tilting objects, but maximal rigid objects. Fix a certain maximal rigid object $T$ in the cluster tube $\mathcal{C}_n$ of rank $n$. For any indecomposable rigid object $M$ in $\mathcal{C}_n$, we define an analogous $X_M$ of Caldero-Chapton's formula (or Palu's cluster character formula) by using the geometric information of $M$. We show that $X_M, X_{M'}$ satisfy the mutation formula when $M,M'$ form an exchange pair, and that $X_{?}: M\mapsto X_M$ gives a bijection from the set of indecomposable rigid objects in $\mathcal{C}_n$ to the set of cluster variables of cluster algebra of type $C_{n-1}$, which induces a bijection between the set of basic maximal rigid objects in $\mathcal{C}_n$ and the set of clusters. This strengths a surprising result proved recently by Buan-Marsh-Vatne that the combinatorics of maximal rigid objects in the cluster tube $\mathcal{C}_n$ encode the combinatorics of the cluster algebra of type $B_{n-1}$ since the combinatorics of cluster algebras of type $B_{n-1}$ or of type $C_{n-1}$ are the same by a result of Fomin and Zelevinsky. As a consequence, we give a categorification of cluster algebras of type $C$.

Strong sign-coherency of certain symmetric polynomials, with application to cluster algebras
For each positive integer n, we define a polynomial in the variables z_1,...,z_n with coefficients in the ring $\mathbb{Q}[q,t,r]$ of polynomial functions of three parameters q, t, r. These polynomials naturally arise in the context of cluster algebras. We conjecture that they are symmetric polynomials in z_1,...,z_n, and that their expansions in terms of monomial, Schur, complete homogeneous, elementary and power sum symmetric polynomials are sign-coherent.

On cluster variables of rank two acyclic cluster algebras

In this note, we find an explicit formula for the Laurent expression of cluster variables of coefficient-free rank two cluster algebras associated with the matrix $\left(\begin{array}{cc} 0 & c -c & 0 \end{array}\right)$, and show that a large number of coefficients are non-negative. As a corollary, we obtain an explicit expression for the Euler-Poincaré characteristics of the corresponding quiver Grassmannians.

Noncommutative integrability, paths and quasi-determinants
Published • View PublicationBIB
In previous work, we showed that the solution of certain systems of discrete integrable equations, notably $Q$ and $T$-systems, is given in terms of partition functions of positively weighted paths, thereby proving the positive Laurent phenomenon of Fomin and Zelevinsky for these cases. This method of solution is amenable to generalization to non-commutative weighted paths. Under certain circumstances, these describe solutions of discrete evolution equations in non-commutative variables: Examples are the corresponding quantum cluster algebras [BZ], the Kontsevich evolution [DFK09b] and the $T$-systems themselves [DFK09a]. In this paper, we formulate certain non-commutative integrable evolutions by considering paths with non-commutative weights, together with an evolution of the weights that reduces to cluster algebra mutations in the commutative limit. The general weights are expressed as Laurent monomials of quasi-determinants of path partition functions, allowing for a non-commutative version of the positive Laurent phenomenon. We apply this construction to the known systems, and obtain Laurent positivity results for their solutions in terms of initial data.

Cluster algebras of finite mutation type via unfoldings
Published in Int. Math. Res. Notices 2012 (2012), 1768-1804 • View PublicationBIB
We complete classification of mutation-finite cluster algebras by extending the technique derived by Fomin, Shapiro, and Thurston to skew-symmetrizable case. We show that for every mutation-finite skew-symmetrizable matrix a diagram characterizing the matrix admits an unfolding which embeds its mutation class to the mutation class of some mutation-finite skew-symmetric matrix. In particular, this establishes a correspondence between a large class of skew-symmetrizable mutation-finite cluster algebras and triangulated marked bordered surfaces.
