Geometric construction of cluster algebras and cluster categories
Published in Trends in Mathematics, R. Meyer, T. Schick, Y. Tschinkel (Eds.), Mathematisches Institut, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Courant-Colloquium Göttingen 2007 (2008), 13-30 • Search Publication
In this note we explain how to obtain cluster algebras from triangulations of (punctured) discs following the approach of S. Fomin, M. Shapiro and D. Thurston. Furthermore, we give a description of m-cluster categories via diagonals (arcs) in (punctured) polygons and of m-cluster categories via powers of translation quivers as given in joint work with R. Marsh.

New Graphs of Finite Mutation Type
Published • View PublicationBIB
To a directed graph without loops and 2-cycles, we can associate a skew-symmetric matrix with integer entries. Mutations of such skew-symmetric matrices, and more generally skew-symmetrizable matrices, have been defined in the context of cluster algebras by Fomin and Zelevinsky. The mutation class of a graph G is the set of all isomorphism classes of graphs that can be obtained from G by a sequence of mutations. A graph is called mutation-finite if its mutation class is finite. Fomin, Shapiro and Thurston constructed mutation-finite graphs from triangulations of oriented bordered surfaces with marked points. We will call such graphs "of geometric type". Besides graphs with 2 vertices, and graphs of geometric type, there are only 9 other "exceptional" mutation classes that are known to be finite. In this paper we introduce 2 new exceptional finite mutation classes.

Sortable elements in infinite Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a series of previous papers, we studied sortable elements in finite Coxeter groups, and the related Cambrian fans. We applied sortable elements and Cambrian fans to the study of cluster algebras of finite type and the noncrossing partitions associated to Artin groups of finite type. In this paper, as the first step towards expanding these applications beyond finite type, we study sortable elements in a general Coxeter group W. We supply uniform arguments which transform all previous finite-type proofs into uniform proofs (rather than type by type proofs), generalize many of the finite-type results and prove new and more refined results. The key tools in our proofs include a skew-symmetric form related to (a generalization of) the Euler form of quiver theory and the projection \pidown^c mapping each element of W to the unique maximal c-sortable element below it in the weak order. The fibers of \pidown^c essentially define the c-Cambrian fan. The most fundamental results are, first, a precise statement of how sortable elements transform under (BGP) reflection functors and second, a precise description of the fibers of \pidown^c. These fundamental results and others lead to further results on the lattice theory and geometry of Cambrian (semi)lattices and Cambrian fans.

Q-systems as cluster algebras II: Cartan matrix of finite type and the polynomial property
Published in Lett.Math.Phys.89:183-216,2009 • View PublicationBIB
We define the cluster algebra associated with the Q-system for the Kirillov-Reshetikhin characters of the quantum affine algebra $U_q(\hat{\g})$ for any simple Lie algebra g, generalizing the simply-laced case treated in [Kedem 2007]. We describe some special properties of this cluster algebra, and explain its relation to the deformed Q-systems which appeared on our proof of the combinatorial-KR conjecture. We prove that the polynomiality of the cluster variables in terms of the ``initial cluster seeds'', including solutions of the Q-system, is a consequence of the Laurent phenomenon and the boundary conditions. We also give a formulation of both Q-systems and generalized T-systems as cluster algebras with coefficients. This provides a proof of the polynomiality of solutions of generalized T-systems with appropriate boundary conditions.

Categorification of acyclic cluster algebras: an introduction
Published • View PublicationBIB
This is a concise introduction to Fomin-Zelevinsky's cluster algebras and their links with the representation theory of quivers in the acyclic case. We review the definition of cluster algebras (geometric, without coefficients), construct the cluster category and present the bijection between cluster variables and rigid indecomposable objects of the cluster category.

On cluster algebras arising from unpunctured surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study cluster algebras that are associated to unpunctured surfaces with coefficients arising from boundary arcs. We give a direct formula for the Laurent polynomial expansion of cluster variables in these cluster algebras in terms of certain paths on a triangulation of the surface. As an immediate consequence, we prove the positivity conjecture of Fomin and Zelevinsky for these cluster algebras. In the special case where the cluster algebra is acyclic, we also give a formula for the expansion of cluster variables as a polynomial whose indeterminates are the cluster variables contained in the union of an arbitrary acyclic cluster and all its neighbouring clusters in the mutation graph.

Cluster algebras and preprojective algebras : the non simply-laced case
Published in L. Demonet, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I 346 (2008) • View PublicationBIB
We generalize to the non simply-laced case results of Geiß, Leclerc and Schröer about the cluster structure of the coordinate ring of the maximal unipotent subgroups of simple Lie groups. In this way, cluster structures in the non simply-laced case can be seen as projections of cluster structures in the simply-laced case. This allows us to prove that cluster monomials are linearly independent in the non simply-laced case.

Ptolemy relations for punctured discs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct frieze patterns of type D_N with entries which are numbers of matchings between vertices and triangles of corresponding triangulations of a punctured disc. For triangulations corresponding to orientations of the Dynkin diagram of type D_N, we show that the numbers in the pattern can be interpreted as specialisations of cluster variables in the corresponding Fomin-Zelevinsky cluster algebra.

A graph theoretic expansion formula for cluster algebras of classical type
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we give a graph theoretic combinatorial interpretation for the cluster variables that arise in most cluster algebras of finite type. In particular, we provide a family of graphs such that a weighted enumeration of their perfect matchings encodes the numerator of the associated Laurent polynomial while decompositions of the graphs correspond to the denominator. This complements recent work by Schiffler and Carroll-Price for a cluster expansion formula for the A_n case while providing a novel interpretation for the B_n, C_n, and D_n cases.

On the properties of the exchange graph of a cluster algebra
Published in Math. Res. Lett. 15 (2008), 321--330 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a conjecture about the vertices and edges of the exchange graph of a cluster algebra $\A$ in two cases: when $\A$ is of geometric type and when $\A$ is arbitrary and its exchange matrix is nondegenerate. In the second case we also prove that the exchange graph does not depend on the coefficients of $\A$. Both conjectures were formulated recently by Fomin and Zelevinsky.

Cluster algebras and triangulated surfaces. Part I: Cluster complexes
Published in Acta Mathematica, 201:83-146, 2008 • View PublicationBIB
We establish basic properties of cluster algebras associated with oriented bordered surfaces with marked points. In particular, we show that the underlying cluster complex of such a cluster algebra does not depend on the choice of coefficients, describe this complex explicitly in terms of "tagged triangulations" of the surface, and determine its homotopy type and its growth rate.

Semicanonical basis generators of the cluster algebra of type $A_1^{(1)}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the cluster variables and "imaginary" elements of the semicanonical basis for the coefficient-free cluster algebra of affine type $A_1^{(1)}$. A closed formula for the Laurent expansions of these elements was obtained by P.Caldero and the author in math.RT/0604054. As a by-product, there was given a combinatorial interpretation of the Laurent polynomials in question, equivalent to the one obtained by G.Musiker and J.Propp in math.CO/0602408. The arguments in math.RT/0604054 used a geometric interpretation of the Laurent polynomials due to P.Caldero and F.Chapoton (math.RT/0410184). This note provides a quick, self-contained and completely elementary alternative proof of the same results.

Cambrian fans
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a finite Coxeter group W and a Coxeter element c of W, the c-Cambrian fan is a coarsening of the fan defined by the reflecting hyperplanes of W. Its maximal cones are naturally indexed by the c-sortable elements of W. The main result of this paper is that the known bijection cl_c between c-sortable elements and c-clusters induces a combinatorial isomorphism of fans. In particular, the c-Cambrian fan is combinatorially isomorphic to the normal fan of the generalized associahedron for W. The rays of the c-Cambrian fan are generated by certain vectors in the W-orbit of the fundamental weights, while the rays of the c-cluster fan are generated by certain roots. For particular ("bipartite") choices of c, we show that the c-Cambrian fan is linearly isomorphic to the c-cluster fan. We characterize, in terms of the combinatorics of clusters, the partial order induced, via the map cl_c, on c-clusters by the c-Cambrian lattice. We give a simple bijection from c-clusters to c-noncrossing partitions that respects the refined (Narayana) enumeration. We relate the Cambrian fan to well known objects in the theory of cluster algebras, providing a geometric context for g-vectors and quasi-Cartan companions.

In the case of the ordinary Kronecker quiver, we obtain explicit expressions for Laurent expansions of the elements of the canonical basis for the corresponding cluster algebra.

Combinatorial interpretations for rank-two cluster algebras of affine type
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 14, no. 1, Research Paper 15 (2007) • View PublicationBIB
Fomin and Zelevinsky show that a certain two-parameter family of rational recurrence relations, here called the (b,c) family, possesses the Laurentness property: for all b,c, each term of the (b,c) sequence can be expressed as a Laurent polynomial in the two initial terms. In the case where the positive integers b,c satisfy bc<4, the recurrence is related to the root systems of finite-dimensional rank 2 Lie algebras; when bc>4, the recurrence is related to Kac-Moody rank 2 Lie algebras of hyperbolic type. Here we investigate the borderline cases bc=4, corresponding to Kac-Moody Lie algebras of affine type. In these cases, we show that the Laurent polynomials arising from the recurence can be viewed as generating functions that enumerate the perfect matchings of certain graphs. By providing combinatorial interpretations of the individual coefficients of these Laurent polynomials, we establish their positivity.

Cluster algebras IV: Coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the dependence of a cluster algebra on the choice of coefficients. We write general formulas expressing the cluster variables in any cluster algebra in terms of the initial data; these formulas involve a family of polynomials associated with a particular choice of "principal" coefficients. We show that the exchange graph of a cluster algebra with principal coefficients covers the exchange graph of any cluster algebra with the same exchange matrix. We investigate two families of parametrizations of cluster monomials by lattice points, determined, respectively, by the denominators of their Laurent expansions and by certain multi-gradings in cluster algebras with principal coefficients. The properties of these parametrizations, some proven and some conjectural, suggest links to duality conjectures of V.Fock and A.Goncharov [math.AG/0311245]. The coefficient dynamics leads to a natural generalization of Al.Zamolodchikov's Y-systems. We establish a Laurent phenomenon for such Y-systems, previously known in finite type only, and sharpen the periodicity result from [hep-th/0111053]. For cluster algebras of finite type, we identify a canonical "universal" choice of coefficients such that an arbitrary cluster algebra can be obtained from the universal one (of the same type) by an appropriate specialization of coefficients.

The combinatorics of frieze patterns and Markoff numbers
This article, based on joint work with Gabriel Carroll, Andy Itsara, Ian Le, Gregg Musiker, Gregory Price, Dylan Thurston, and Rui Viana, presents a combinatorial model based on perfect matchings that explains the symmetries of the numerical arrays that Conway and Coxeter dubbed frieze patterns. This matchings model is a combinatorial interpretation of Fomin and Zelevinsky's cluster algebras of type A. One can derive from the matchings model an enumerative meaning for the Markoff numbers, and prove that the associated Laurent polynomials have positive coefficients as was conjectured (much more generally) by Fomin and Zelevinsky. Most of this research was conducted under the auspices of REACH (Research Experiences in Algebraic Combinatorics at Harvard).

Cyclically Orientable Graphs
Barot, Geiss and Zelevinsky define a notion of a ``cyclically orientable graph'' and use it to devise a test for whether a cluster algebra is of finite type. Barot, Geiss and Zelivinsky's work leaves open the question of giving an efficient characterization of cyclically orientable graphs. In this paper, we give a simple recursive description of cyclically orientable graphs, and use this to give an O(n) algorithm to test whether a graph on $n$ vertices is cyclically orientable. Shortly after writing this paper, I learned that most of its results had been obtained independently by Gurvich; I am placing this paper on the arXiv to spread knowledge of these results.
