Suppose $Δ$ is a pure simplicial complex on $n$ vertices having dimension $d$ and let $c = n-d-1$ be its codimension in the simplex. Terai and Yoshida proved that if the number of facets of $Δ$ is at least $\binom{n}{c}-2c+1$, then $Δ$ is Cohen-Macaulay. We improve this result by showing that these hypotheses imply the stronger condition that $Δ$ is vertex decomposable. We give examples to show that this bound is optimal, and that the conclusion cannot be strengthened to the class of matroids or shifted complexes. We explore an application to Simon's Conjecture and discuss connections to other results from the literature.

In this paper we investigate Cohen-Macaulayness, Gorensteinness and the Hilbert-Poincaré series for some classes of non-prime collections of cells. In particular, we show that all closed path polyominoes are Cohen-Macaulay and we characterize those that are Gorenstein.
On the Depth of Generalized Binomial Edge Ideals
This research focuses on analyzing the depth of generalized binomial edge ideals. We extend the notion of $d$-compatible map for the pairs of a complete graph and an arbitrary graph, and using it, we give a combinatorial lower bound for the depth of generalized binomial edge ideals. Subsequently, we determine an upper bound for the depth of generalized binomial edge ideals in terms of the vertex-connectivity of graphs. We demonstrate that the difference between the upper and lower bounds can be arbitrarily large, even in cases when one of the bounds is sharp. In addition, we calculate the depth of generalized binomial edge ideals of certain classes of graphs, including cyclic graphs and graphs with Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals.
Stanley decompositions of modules of covariants
Let $H$ be a complex reductive group, with finite-dimensional representations $W$ and $U$. The module of covariants for $W$ of type $U$ is the space of all $H$-equivariant polynomial maps $\varphi: W \longrightarrow U$. In this paper, we take $H$ to be one of the classical groups $\operatorname{GL}(V)$, $\operatorname{O}(V)$, or $\operatorname{Sp}(V)$, where $W$ is a direct sum of copies of $V$ and $V^*$, and $U$ is an arbitrary rational representation (with $U$ restricted to exterior powers of $V$ in the $H= \operatorname{O}(V)$ case). Our main result gives uniform Stanley decompositions of these modules of covariants, with Stanley spaces parametrized by combinatorial objects we call jellyfish. As a corollary, we write down the Hilbert series as a finite sum of rational functions, each with a combinatorial interpretation in terms of lattice paths. Notably, these results do not rely on the module being Cohen-Macaulay. We further apply our methods to invariant rings for $\operatorname{SL}(V)$ and $\operatorname{SO}(V)$. Our proofs (for $H = \operatorname{GL}(V)$ and $\operatorname{Sp}(V)$) rely on previous work by Jackson on standard monomial theory for dual reductive pairs, since classical modules of covariants can be viewed via Howe duality as Harish-Chandra modules of unitary highest weight representations of a certain real reductive group. As a first step toward extending this program to arbitrary unitary highest weight representations (including those of the exceptional groups), we establish analogous results uniformly for the Wallach representations of type ADE.
Conditions of multiplicity and applications for almost Gorenstein graded rings
In this paper, we prove that if Cohen-Macaulay local/graded rings $R_1$, $R_2$ and $R$ satisfy certain conditions regarding multiplicity and Cohen-Macaulay type, then almost Gorenstein property of $R$ implies Gorenstein properties for all of $R_1$, $R_2$ and $R$. We apply our theorem to tensor products of semi-standard graded rings and some classes of affine semigroup rings, i.e., numerical semigroup rings, edge rings and stable set rings.
Conditions for Virtually Cohen--Macaulay Simplicial Complexes
A simplicial complex $Δ$ is a virtually Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex if its associated Stanley-Reisner ring $S$ has a virtual resolution, as defined by Berkesch, Erman, and Smith, of length ${\rm codim}(S)$. We provide a sufficient condition on $Δ$ to be a virtually Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex. We also introduce virtually shellable simplicial complexes, a generalization of shellable simplicial complexes. Virtually shellable complexes have the property that they are virtually Cohen-Macaulay, generalizing the well-known fact that shellable simplicial complexes are Cohen-Macaulay.

Suppose that $F$ is a finite field and $R=M_n(F)$ is the ring of $n$-square matrices over $F$. Here we characterize when the Cayley graph of the additive group of $R$ with respect to the set of invertible elements of $R$, called the unitary Cayley graph of $R$, is well-covered. Then we apply this to characterize all finite rings with identity whose unitary Cayley graph is well-covered or Cohen-Macaulay.

In this article, we characterize Cohen-Macaulay permutation graphs. In particular, we show that a permutation graph is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if it is well-covered and there exists a unique way of partitioning its vertex set into $r$ disjoint maximal cliques, where $r$ is the cardinality of a maximal independent set of the graph. We also provide some sufficient conditions for a comparability graph to be a uniquely partially orderable (UPO) graph.
Cohen-Macaulayness of Total Simplicial Complexes
We first construct the total simplicial complex (TSC) of a finite simple graph $G$ in order to generalize the total graph $T(G)$. We show that $Δ_T(G)$ is not Cohen-Macaulay (CM) in general. For a connected graph $G$, we prove that the TSC is Buchsbaum. We demonstrate that the vanishing of first homology group of TSC associated to a connected graph $G$ is both a necessary and sufficient condition for it to be CM. We find the primary decomposition of the TSC associated to a family of friendship graphs $F_{5n+1}$ and prove it to be CM.
Stanley decompositions of rings of invariants and certain highest weight Harish-Chandra modules
The first half of this paper is largely expository, wherein we present a systematic combinatorial approach to the theory of polynomial (semi)invariants and multilinear invariants of several vectors and covectors, for the classical groups. This culminates in a graphical description of graded linear bases. By applying well-known results of lattice path combinatorics to Weyl's fundamental theorems of classical invariant theory, we write down Stanley decompositions and Hilbert-Poincare series in terms of families of non-intersecting lattice paths, enumerated with respect to certain corners.
In the second half of the paper, we revisit the (semi)invariants in the first half as a special case of a much broader phenomenon. On one hand, polynomial invariants of a group $H$ can be generalized to modules of covariants, i.e., $H$-equivariant polynomial functions between $H$-modules. On the other hand, from the perspective of Roger Howe's theory of dual pairs, these modules of covariants can be viewed as infinite-dimensional simple $(\mathfrak{g}, K)$-modules. This suggests an expanded program in which our goal is to apply combinatorial techniques involving lattice paths in order to write down Hilbert series for arbitrary unitarizable highest-weight $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-modules. As a preview of future work in this program, we present examples showing how modules of covariants -- even those which are not Cohen-Macaulay, and therefore which we would not expect to be combinatorially nice -- can be decomposed in terms of lattice paths. We also extend these methods beyond the classical groups.
The Cohen-Macaulay type of edge-weighted r-path ideals
We describe combinatorially the Cohen-Macaulay type of edge-weighted r-path suspensions of edge-weighted graphs for an arbitrary positive integer r. The computation of the Cohen-Macaulay type of edge-weighted suspensions of edge-weighted graphs becomes a special case of r = 1.
Depth of powers of edge ideals of Cohen-Macaulay trees
Let $I$ be the edge ideal of a Cohen-Macaulay tree of dimension $d$ over a polynomial ring $S = \mathrm{k}[x_1,\ldots,x_{d},y_1,\ldots,y_d]$. We prove that for all $t \ge 1$,
$$\operatorname{depth} (S/I^t) = \operatorname{max} \{d -t + 1, 1 \}.$$
Cohen-Macaulay edge-weighted graphs of girth $5$ or greater
Let $G_ω$ be an edge-weighted graph whose underlying graph is $G$. In this paper, we enlarge the class of Cohen-Macaulay edge-weighted graphs $G_ω$ by classifying completely them when the graph $G$ has girth $5$ or greater.
Cohen-Macaulay weighted chordal graphs
In this paper I give a combinatorial characterization of all the Cohen-Macaulay weighted chordal graphs. In particular, it is shown that a weighted chordal graph is Cohen- Macaulay if and only if it is unmixed.

Let $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring over a field $K$, and let $A$ be a finitely generated standard graded $S$-algebra. We show that if the defining ideal of $A$ has a quadratic initial ideal, then all the graded components of $A$ are componentwise linear. Applying this result to the Rees ring $\mathcal{R}(I)$ of a graded ideal $I$ gives a criterion on $I$ to have componentwise linear powers. Moreover, for any given graph $G$, a construction on $G$ is presented which produces graphs whose cover ideals $I_G$ have componentwise linear powers. This in particular implies that for any Cohen-Macaulay Cameron-Walker graph $G$ all powers of $I_G$ have linear resolutions. Moreover, forming a cone on special graphs like unmixed chordal graphs, path graphs and Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graphs produces cover ideals with componentwise linear powers.
Cohen-Macaulay oriented graphs with large girth
We classify the Cohen-Macaulay weighted oriented graphs whose underlying graphs have girth at least $5$.
Cohen-Macaulay Weighted Oriented Chordal and Simplicial Graphs
Herzog, Hibi, and Zheng classified the Cohen-Macaulay edge ideals of chordal graphs. In this paper, we classify Cohen-Macaulay edge ideals of (vertex) weighted oriented chordal and simplicial graphs, a more general class of monomial ideals. In particular, we show that the Cohen-Macaulay property of these ideals is equivalent to the unmixed one and hence, independent of the underlying field.
Combinatorics of Castelnuovo-Mumford Regularity of Binomial Edge Ideals
Since the introduction of binomial edge ideals $J_{G}$ by Herzog et al. and independently Ohtani, there has been significant interest in relating algebraic invariants of the binomial edge ideal with combinatorial invariants of the underlying graph $G$. Here, we take up a question considered by Herzog and Rinaldo regarding Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of block graphs. To this end, we introduce a new invariant $ν(G)$ associated to any simple graph $G$, defined as the maximal total length of a certain collection of induced paths within $G$ subject to conditions on the induced subgraph. We prove that for any graph $G$, $ν(G) \leq \text{reg}(J_{G})-1$, and that the length of a longest induced path of $G$ is less than or equal to $ν(G)$; this refines an inequality of Matsuda and Murai. We then investigate the question: when is $ν(G) = \text{reg}(J_{G})-1$? We prove that equality holds when $G$ is closed; this gives a new characterization of a result of Ene and Zarojanu, and when $G$ is bipartite and $J_{G}$ is Cohen-Macaulay; this gives a new characterization of a result of Jayanathan and Kumar. For a block graph $G$, we prove that $ν(G)$ admits a combinatorial characterization independent of any auxiliary choices, and we prove that $ν(G) = \text{reg}(J_{G})-1$. This gives $\text{reg}(J_{G})$ a combinatorial interpretation for block graphs, and thus answers the question of Herzog and Rinaldo.

The coefficients of the chain polynomial of a finite poset enumerate chains in the poset by their number of elements. It has been a challenging open problem to determine which posets have real-rooted chain polynomials. Two new classes of posets, namely those of all rank-selected subposets of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial posets and all noncrossing partition lattices associated to finite Coxeter groups, are shown to have this property. The first result generalizes one of Brenti and Welker. As a special case, the descent enumerator of permutations of the set $\{1, 2,\dots,n\}$ which have ascents at specified positions is shown to be real-rooted, hence log-concave and unimodal, and a good estimate for the location of the peak is deduced.
On the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of symbolic powers of cover ideals
Assume that $G$ is a graph with cover ideal $J(G)$. For every integer $k\geq 1$, we denote the $k$-th symbolic power of $J(G)$ by $J(G)^{(k)}$. We provide a sharp upper bound for the regularity of $J(G)^{(k)}$ in terms of the star packing number of $G$. Also, for any integer $k\geq 2$, we study the difference between ${\rm reg}(J(G)^{(k)})$ and ${\rm reg}(J(G)^{(k-2)})$. As a consequence, we compute the regularity of $J(G)^{(k)}$ when $G$ is a doubly Cohen-Macaulay graph. Furthermore, we determine ${\rm reg}(J(G)^{(k)})$ if $G$ is either a Cameron-Walker graph or a claw-free graph which has no cycle of length other that $3$ and $5$.
