Edge Erasures and Chordal Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove several results about chordal graphs and weighted chordal graphs by focusing on exposed edges. These are edges that are properly contained in a single maximal complete subgraph. This leads to a characterization of chordal graphs via deletions of a sequence of exposed edges from a complete graph. Most interesting is that in this context the connected components of the edge-induced subgraph of exposed edges are 2-edge connected. We use this latter fact in the weighted case to give a modified version of Kruskal's second algorithm for finding a minimum spanning tree in a weighted chordal graph. This modified algorithm benefits from being local in an important sense.

Graphs with degree complete labeling
In 2006 Qian [J. Qian, Degree complete graphs; Discrete Mathematics 306 (2006), 533--537] introduced the concept of degree complete graphs for labeled graphs. He also gave a characterization of these graphs in terms of two forbidden subgraphs. Furthermore, he mentioned that the property of being degree complete depends on the labeling of the graph. Related to this he stated the problem to find a characterization of those (unlabeled) graphs for which every labeled version is not degree complete. We say that a (unlabeled) graph has a degree complete labeling, if there is a labeled version of the graph that is degree complete. In this paper we give three characterizations of graphs with degree complete labeling. These characterizations give us polynomial-time procedures to recognize these graphs and find a degree complete labeling, if it exists.

The spectral determination of the multicone graphs Kw+P
The main aim of this study is to characterize new classes of multicone graphs which are determined by their signless Laplacian spectra, their Laplacian spectra and their adjacency spectra. A multicone graph is defined to be the join of a clique and a regular graph. Let P and Kw denote the Petersen graph and a complete graph on w vertices, respectively. In this paper, we show that multicone graphs Kw+P are determined by their signless Laplacian spectra, their Laplacian spectra and their adjacency spectra. Keywords: DS graph; Multicone graph; Signless Laplacian spectrum; Petersen graph.

On Ryser's conjecture for t-intersecting and degree-bounded hypergraphs
A famous conjecture (usually called Ryser's conjecture) that appeared in the Ph.D thesis of his student, J.~R.~Henderson [15], states that for an $r$-uniform $r$-partite hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$, the inequality $τ(\mathcal{H})\le(r-1)\cdot ν(\mathcal{H})$ always holds. This conjecture is widely open, except in the case of $r=2$, when it is equivalent to K\H onig's theorem [18], and in the case of $r=3$, which was proved by Aharoni in 2001 [3]. Here we study some special cases of Ryser's conjecture. First of all the most studied special case is when $\mathcal{H}$ is intersecting. Even for this special case, not too much is known: this conjecture is proved only for $r\le 5$ in [10,21]. For $r>5$ it is also widely open. Generalizing the conjecture for intersecting hypergraphs, we conjecture the following. If an $r$-uniform $r$-partite hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is $t$-intersecting (i.e., every two hyperedges meet in at least $t<r$ vertices), then $τ(\mathcal{H})\le r-t$. We prove this conjecture for the case $t> r/4$. Gyárfás [10] showed that Ryser's conjecture for intersecting hypergraphs is equivalent to saying that the vertices of an $r$-edge-colored complete graph can be covered by $r-1$ monochromatic components. Motivated by this formulation, we examine what fraction of the vertices can be covered by $r-1$ monochromatic components of \emph{different} colors in an $r$-edge-colored complete graph. We prove a sharp bound for this problem. Finally we prove Ryser's conjecture for the very special case when the maximum degree of the hypergraph is two.

Affine maps between quadratic assignment polytopes and subgraph isomorphism polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider two polytopes. The quadratic assignment polytope $QAP(n)$ is the convex hull of the set of tensors $x\otimes x$, $x \in P_n$, where $P_n$ is the set of $n\times n$ permutation matrices. The second polytope is defined as follows. For every permutation of vertices of the complete graph $K_n$ we consider appropriate $\binom{n}{2} \times \binom{n}{2}$ permutation matrix of the edges of $K_n$. The Young polytope $P((n-2,2))$ is the convex hull of all such matrices. In 2009, S. Onn showed that the subgraph isomorphism problem can be reduced to optimization both over $QAP(n)$ and over $P((n-2,2))$. He also posed the question whether $QAP(n)$ and $P((n-2,2))$, having $n!$ vertices each, are isomorphic. We show that $QAP(n)$ and $P((n-2,2))$ are not isomorphic. Also, we show that $QAP(n)$ is a face of $P((2n-2,2))$, but $P((n-2,2))$ is a projection of $QAP(n)$.

On the regularity of edge ideal of graphs
Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices, $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $\mathbb{K}$ and $I(G)$ denote the edge ideal of $G$. For every collection $\mathcal{H}$ of connected graphs with $K_2\in \mathcal{H}$, we introduce the notions of $\ind-match_{\mathcal{H}}(G)$ and $\min-match_{\mathcal{H}}(G)$. It will be proved that the inequalities $\ind-match_{\{K_2, C_5\}}(G)\leq{\rm reg}(S/I(G))\leq\min-match_{\{K_2, C_5\}}(G)$ are true. Moreover, we show that if $G$ is a Cohen--Macaulay graph with girth at least five, then ${\rm reg}(S/I(G))=\ind-match_{\{K_2, C_5\}}(G)$. Furthermore, we prove that if $G$ is a paw--free and doubly Cohen--Macaulay graph, then ${\rm reg}(S/I(G))=\ind-match_{\{K_2, C_5\}}(G)$ if and only if every connected component of $G$ is either a complete graph or a $5$-cycle graph. Among other results, we show that for every doubly Cohen--Macaulay simplicial complex, the equality ${\rm reg}(\mathbb{K}[Δ])={\rm dim}(\mathbb{K}[Δ])$ holds.

Covering complete graphs by monochromatically bounded sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a $k$-colouring of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$, are there $k-1$ monochromatic components that cover its vertices? This important special case of the well-known Lovász-Ryser conjecture is still open. In this paper we consider a strengthening of this question, where we insist that the covering sets are not merely connected but have bounded diameter. In particular, we prove that for any colouring of $E(K_n)$ with 4 colours, there is a choice of sets $A_1, A_2, A_3$ that cover all vertices, and colours $c_1, c_2, c_3$, such that for each $i = 1,2,3$ the monochromatic subgraph induced by the set $A_i$ and the colour $c_i$ has diameter at most 160.

Sharp threshold for $K_4$-percolation
Published in Electron. J. Probab. 27, Paper No. 13, 23 p. (2022) • View PublicationBIB
We locate the critical threshold $p_c$ at which it becomes likely that the complete graph $K_n$ can be obtained from the Erdős-Rényi graph ${\cal G}_{n,p}$ by iteratively completing copies of $K_4$ minus an edge. This refines work of Balogh, Bollobás and Morris that bounds the threshold up to multiplicative constants.

On Central-Peripheral Appendage Numbers of Uniform Central Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a uniform central graph (UCG) the eccentric verticies of a central vertex is the same for all central verticies. This collection of eccentric verticies is the centered periphery. For a pair of graphs $(C, P)$ the central-peripheral appendage number, $A_{ucg}(C, P)$, is the minimum number verticies needed to be adjoined to the graphs $C$ and $P$ in order to construct a uniform central graph H with center C and centered-periphery P. We compute $A_{ucg}(C, P)$ in terms of the radius and diameter of P and whether or not $C$ is a complete graph. In the process we show $A_{ucg}(C, P)\leq 6$ if $diam(P) > 2$. We also provide structure theorems for UCGs in terms of the centered periphery.

Periodic Steiner networks minimizing length
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study a problem of geometric graph theory: We determine the triply periodic graph in Euclidean 3-space which minimizes length among all graphs spanning a fundamental domain of 3-space with the same volume. The minimizer is the so-called srs network with quotient the complete graph on four vertices $K_4$. The network spans the body centred cubic lattice and is related to the gyroid triply periodic surface.

Topological containment of the 5-clique minus an edge in 4-connected graphs
The topological containment problem is known to be polynomial-time solvable for any fixed pattern graph $H$, but good characterisations have been found for only a handful of non-trivial pattern graphs. The complete graph on five vertices, $K_5$, is one pattern graph for which a characterisation has not been found. The discovery of such a characterisation would be of particular interest, due to the Hajós Conjecture. One step towards this may be to find a good characterisation of graphs that do not topologically contain the simpler pattern graph $K_5^-$, obtained by removing a single edge from $K_5$. This paper makes progress towards achieving this, by showing that every 4-connected graph must contain a $K_5^-$-subdivision.

Rainbow spanning trees in properly coloured complete graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this short note, we study pairwise edge-disjoint rainbow spanning trees in properly edge-coloured complete graphs, where a graph is rainbow if its edges have distinct colours. Brualdi and Hollingsworth conjectured that every $K_n$ properly edge-coloured by $n-1$ colours has $n/2$ edge-disjoint rainbow spanning trees. Kaneko, Kano and Suzuki later suggested this should hold for every properly edge-coloured $K_n$. Improving the previous best known bound, we show that every properly edge-coloured $K_n$ contains $Ω(n)$ pairwise edge-disjoint rainbow spanning trees. Independently, Pokrovskiy and Sudakov recently proved that every properly edge-coloured $K_n$ contains $Ω(n)$ isomorphic pairwise edge-disjoint rainbow spanning trees.

Tight upper bound on the maximum anti-forcing numbers of graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 3, Graph Theory (October 17, 2017) dmtcs:3267 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple graph with a perfect matching. Deng and Zhang showed that the maximum anti-forcing number of $G$ is no more than the cyclomatic number. In this paper, we get a novel upper bound on the maximum anti-forcing number of $G$ and investigate the extremal graphs. If $G$ has a perfect matching $M$ whose anti-forcing number attains this upper bound, then we say $G$ is an extremal graph and $M$ is a nice perfect matching. We obtain an equivalent condition for the nice perfect matchings of $G$ and establish a one-to-one correspondence between the nice perfect matchings and the edge-involutions of $G$, which are the automorphisms $α$ of order two such that $v$ and $α(v)$ are adjacent for every vertex $v$. We demonstrate that all extremal graphs can be constructed from $K_2$ by implementing two expansion operations, and $G$ is extremal if and only if one factor in a Cartesian decomposition of $G$ is extremal. As examples, we have that all perfect matchings of the complete graph $K_{2n}$ and the complete bipartite graph $K_{n, n}$ are nice. Also we show that the hypercube $Q_n$, the folded hypercube $FQ_n$ ($n\geq4$) and the enhanced hypercube $Q_{n, k}$ ($0\leq k\leq n-4$) have exactly $n$, $n+1$ and $n+1$ nice perfect matchings respectively.

On graphs with $m(\partial^L_1)=n-3$
Let $\partial^L_1\ge\partial^L_2\ge\cdots\ge\partial^L_n$ be the distance Laplacian eigenvalues of a connected graph $G$ and $m(\partial^L_i)$ the multiplicity of $\partial^L_i$. It is well known that the graphs with $m(\partial^L_1)=n-1$ are complete graphs. Recently, the graphs with $m(\partial^L_1)=n-2$ have been characterized by Celso et al. In this paper, we completely determine the graphs with $m(\partial^L_1)=n-3$.

An explicit edge-coloring of K_n with six colors on every K_5
Published • View PublicationBIB
For fixed integers p and q, let f(n,p,q) denote the minimum number of colors needed to color all of the edges of the complete graph K_n such that no clique of p vertices spans fewer than q distinct colors. A construction is given which shows that f(n,5,6) < n^(1/2+o(1)). This improves upon the best known probabilistic upper bound of O(n^(3/5)) given by Erdős and Gyárfás. It is also shown that f(n,5,6) = Ω(n^(1/2)).

A note on graphs with disjoint maximal cliques ans a link with evasiveness
In this note, we prove that a finite vertex-transitive graph which has a clique which intersects all maximal cliques is a complete graph. This gives a positive answer in the case of vertex-transitive graphs to a question raised by Berge and Payan. It also gives a positive answer to a special case of the evasiveness conjecture.
A probabilistic approach to the leader problem in random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the fixation time of the identity of the leader, i.e., the most massive component, in the general setting of Aldous's multiplicative coalescent [4, 5], which in an asymptotic sense describes the evolution of the component sizes of a wide array of near-critical coalescent processes, including the classical Erdős-Rényi process. We show tightness of the fixation time in the "Brownian" regime, explicitly determining the median value of the fixation time to within an optimal $O(1)$ window. This generalizes Łuczak's result [31] for the Erdős-Rényi random graph using completely different techniques. In the heavy-tailed case, in which the limit of the component sizes can be encoded using a thinned pure-jump Lévy process, we prove that only one-sided tightness holds. This shows a genuine difference in the possible behavior in the two regimes. The solution to the leader problem in the setting of the Erdős-Rényi random graph played an important role in the study of the scaling limit of the minimal spanning tree on the complete graph [2]. We believe that analogous results, such as those proved herein, will be useful in establishing universality of the intrinsic geometry of the minimal spanning tree across a large class of models.

More on the $k$-color connection number of a graph
An edge-colored graph $G$ is $k$-color connected if, between each pair of vertices, there exists a path using at least $k$ different colors. The $k$-color connection number of $G$, denoted by $cc_{k}(G)$, is the minimum number of colors needed to color the edges of $G$ so that $G$ is $k$-color connected. First, we prove that let $H$ be a subdivision of a connected graph $G$, then $cc_{k}(H)\leq cc_{k}(G)$. Second, we give sufficient conditions to guarantee that $cc_{k}(G)=k$ in terms of minimum degree and the number of edges for 2-connected graphs. As a byproduct, we show that almost all graphs have the $k$-color connection number $k$. At last, we investigate the relationship between the $k$-color connection number and the rainbow connection number for a connected graph. In addition, we give exact values of $k$-color connection numbers for some graph classes: subdivisions of the wheel and the complete graph, and the generalised $θ$-graph.

On the Profile of Multiplicities of Complete Subgraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a $2$-coloring of a complete graph on $n$ vertices, for sufficiently large $n$. We prove that $G$ contains at least $n^{(\frac{1}{4} - o(1))\log n}$ monochromatic complete subgraphs of size $r$, where \[ 0.3\log n < r < 0.7\log n. \] The previously known lower bound on the total number of monochromatic complete subgraphs, due to Székely was $n^{0.1576\log n}$. We also prove that $G$ contains at least $n^{\frac{1}{7} \log n} $ monochromatic complete subgraphs of size $\frac{1}{2}\log n$. If furthermore one assumes that the largest monochromatic complete subgraph in $G$ is of size $(\frac{1}{2} + o(1))\log n$ (it is a well known open question whether such graphs exist), then for every constant $0 \le c \le \frac{1}{2}$ we determine (up to low order terms) the number of monochromatic complete subgraphs of size $c \log n$. We do so by proving a lower bound that matches (up to low order terms) a previous upper bound of Székely. For example, the number of monochromatic complete subgraphs of size $\frac{1}{2} \log n$ is $n^{\frac{1}{8}(4 - \log e \pm o(1))\log n} \simeq n^{0.32 \log n}$.

The spectral determinations of the multicone graphs Kw+mCn
The main goal of the paper is to characterize new classes of multicone graphs which are determined by both adjacency and Laplacian spectra. A multicone graph is defined to be the join of a clique and a regular graph. A wheel graph obtained from the join of a complete graph on a vertex with a cycle. A question about when wheel graphs are determined by their adjacency spectra is still unsolved. So, any indication about the determinations of these graphs with respect to their adjacency spectra can be an interesting and important problem. In [Y. Zhang, X. Liu, and X. Yong: Which wheel graphs are determined by their Laplacian spectra?. Comput. Math. Appl., 58 (2009) 1887{1890] and [M.-H. Liu: Some graphs determined by their (signless) Laplacian spectra. Czech. Math. J., 62, (2012) 1117{1134] it have been shown that except for, the wheel graph of order seven, all wheel graphs are determined by their Laplacian spectra and wheel graphs are determined by their signless Laplacian spectra, respectively. In this study, we present new classes of connected multicone graphs which are a natural generalization of wheel graphs and we show that these graphs are determined by their adjacency spectra as well as their Laplacian spectra. Also, we show that complement of some of these graphs are determined by their adjacency spectra. In addition, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for perfecting graphs cospectral with presented graphs in the paper. Finally, we pose two problems for further work.
