Eulerian polynomials on segmented permutations
We define a generalization of the Eulerian polynomials and the Eulerian numbers by considering a descent statistic on segmented permutations coming from the study of 2-species exclusion processes and a change of basis in a Hopf algebra. We give some properties satisfied by these generalized Eulerian numbers. We also define a $q$-analog of these Eulerian polynomials which gives back usual Eulerian polynomials and ordered Bell polynomials for specific values of its variables. We also define a noncommutative analog living in the algebra of segmented compositions. It gives us an explicit generating function and some identities satisfied by the generalized Eulerian polynomials such as a Worpitzky-type relation.

A theory of linear typings as flows on 3-valent graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Building on recently established enumerative connections between lambda calculus and the theory of embedded graphs (or "maps"), this paper develops an analogy between typing (of lambda terms) and coloring (of maps). Our starting point is the classical notion of an abelian group-valued "flow" on an abstract graph (Tutte, 1954). Typing a linear lambda term may be naturally seen as constructing a flow (on an embedded 3-valent graph with boundary) valued in a more general algebraic structure consisting of a preordered set equipped with an "implication" operation and unit satisfying composition, identity, and unit laws. Interesting questions and results from the theory of flows (such as the existence of nowhere-zero flows) may then be re-examined from the standpoint of lambda calculus and logic. For example, we give a characterization of when the local flow relations (across vertices) may be categorically lifted to a global flow relation (across the boundary), proving that this holds just in case the underlying map has the orientation of a lambda term. We also develop a basic theory of rewriting of flows that suggests topological meanings for classical completeness results in combinatory logic, and introduce a polarized notion of flow, which draws connections to the theory of proof-nets in linear logic and to bidirectional typing.

Lecture hall tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce lecture hall tableaux, which are fillings of a skew Young diagram satisfying certain conditions. Lecture hall tableaux generalize both lecture hall partitions and anti-lecture hall compositions, and also contain reverse semistandard Young tableaux as a limit case. We show that the coefficients in the Schur expansion of multivariate little $q$-Jacobi polynomials are generating functions for lecture hall tableaux. Using a Selberg-type integral we show that moments of multivariate little $q$-Jacobi polynomials, which are equal to generating functions for lecture hall tableaux of a Young diagram, have a product formula. We also explore various combinatorial properties of lecture hall tableaux.

Elements of Finite Order in the Group of Formal Power Series Under Composition
We consider formal power series $f(z) = ωz + a_2z^2 + \ldots \ (ω\neq 0)$, with coefficients in a field of characteristic $0$. These form a group under the operation of composition (= substitution). We prove (Theorem 1) that every element $f(z)$ of finite order is conjugate to its linear term $\ell_ω(z) = ωz$, and we characterize those elements which conjugate $f(z)$ to $ωz$. Then we investigate the construction of elements of order $n$ and prove (Theorem 2) that, given a primitive $n$'th root of unity $ω$ and an arbitrary sequence $\{a_k\}_{k\neq nj+1}$ there is a unique sequence $\{a_{nj + 1}\}_{j=1}^\infty$ such that the series $f(z) = ωz + a_2z^2 + a_3z^3 + \ldots$ has order $n$. Sections 1 - 5 give an exposition of this classical subject, written for the 2005 - 2006 Morgan State University Combinatorics Seminar. We do not claim priority for these results in this classical field, though perhaps the proof of Theorem 2 is new. We have now (2018) added Section 6 which gives references to valuable articles in the literature and historical comments which, however incomplete, we hope will give proper credit to those who have preceded this note and be helpful and of interest to the reader.

The generating function of planar Eulerian orientations
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 2020 • View PublicationBIB
The enumeration of planar maps equipped with an Eulerian orientation has attracted attention in both combinatorics and theoretical physics since at least 2000. The case of 4-valent maps is particularly interesting: these orientations are in bijection with properly 3-coloured quadrangulations, while in physics they correspond to configurations of the ice model. We solve both problems -- namely the enumeration of planar Eulerian orientations and of 4-valent planar Eulerian orientations -- by expressing the associated generating functions as the inverses (for the composition of series) of simple hypergeometric series. Using these expressions, we derive the asymptotic behaviour of the number of planar Eulerian orientations, thus proving earlier predictions of Kostov, Zinn-Justin, Elvey Price and Guttmann. This behaviour, $μ^n /(n \log n)^2$, prevents the associated generating functions from being D-finite. Still, these generating functions are differentially algebraic, as they satisfy non-linear differential equations of order $2$. Differential algebraicity has recently been proved for other map problems, in particular for maps equipped with a Potts model. Our solutions mix recursive and bijective ingredients. In particular, a preliminary bijection transforms our oriented maps into maps carrying a height function on their vertices. In the 4-valent case, we also observe an unexpected connection with the enumeration of maps equipped with a spanning tree that is internally inactive in the sense of Tutte. This connection remains to be explained combinatorially.

Some Relations on Paratopisms and An Intuitive Interpretation on the Parastrophes of a Latin Square
This paper will present some intuitive interpretation of the parastrophe transformations of arbitrary Latin square. With this trick, we can generate the parastrophes of arbitrary Latin square directly from the original one without generating the orthogonal array. The relations of isotopisms and parastrophe transformations in composition will also be shown. It will solve the problem that when F1*I1=I2*F2 how can we obtain I2 and F2 from I1 and F1, where I1 and I2 are isotopisms while F1 and F2 are parastrophe transformations and "{*}" is the composition of transformations. These methods could distinctly simplify the computation on a computer for the issues related to main classes of Latin squares. This will improve the efficiency apparently in computation for some related problems.

Composition inverses of the variations of the Baum-Sweet sequence
Published • View PublicationBIB
Studying and comparing arithmetic properties of a given automatic sequence and the sequence of coefficients of the composition inverse of the associated formal power series (the formal inverse of that sequence) is an interesting problem. This problem was studied before for the Thue-Morse sequence. In this paper, we study arithmetic properties of the formal inverses of two sequences closely related to the well-known Baum-Sweet sequence. We give the recurrence relations for their formal inverses and we determine whether the sequences of indices at which these formal inverses take value $0$ and $1$ are regular. We also show an unexpected connection between one of the obtained sequences and the formal inverse of the Thue-Morse sequence.

A note on passing from a quasi-symmetric function expansion to a Schur function expansion of a symmetric function
Egge, Loehr and Warrington gave in \cite{ELW} a combinatorial formula that permits to convert the expansion of a symmetric function, homogeneous of degree $n$, in terms of Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions into an expansion in terms of Schur functions. Surprisingly the Egge, Loehr and Warrington result may be shown to be simply equivalent to replacing the Gessel fundamental by a Schur function indexed by the same composition. In this paper we give a direct proof of the validity of this replacement. This interpretation of the result in \cite{ELW} has already been successfully applied to Schur positivity problems.
Online Coloring of Short Intervals
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the online graph coloring problem restricted to the intersection graphs of intervals with lengths in $[1,σ]$. For $σ=1$ it is the class of unit interval graphs, and for $σ=\infty$ the class of all interval graphs. Our focus is on intermediary classes. We present a $(1+σ)$-competitive algorithm, which beats the state of the art for $1 < σ< 2$, and proves that the problem we study can be strictly easier than online coloring of general interval graphs. On the lower bound side, we prove that no algorithm is better than $5/3$-competitive for any $σ>1$, nor better than $7/4$-competitive for any $σ>2$, and that no algorithm beats the $5/2$ asymptotic competitive ratio for all, arbitrarily large, values of $σ$. That last result shows that the problem we study can be strictly harder than unit interval coloring. Our main technical contribution is a recursive composition of strategies, which seems essential to prove any lower bound higher than $2$.

Perfect shuffling by lazy swaps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We characterize the minimum-length sequences of independent lazy simple transpositions whose composition is a uniformly random permutation. For every reduced word of the reverse permutation there is exactly one valid way to assign probabilities to the transpositions. It is an open problem to determine the minimum length of such a sequence when the simplicity condition is dropped.
Graded Expectations: Betti numbers and anti-lecture hall compositions of random threshold graphs
Published in Pacific J. Math. 319 (2022) 75-98 • View PublicationBIB
This paper examines the one-to-one-to-one correspondence between threshold graphs, Betti numbers of quotients of polynomial rings by $2$-linear ideals, and anti-lecture hall compositions. In particular, we establish new explicit combinatorial mappings between each of these classes of objects and calculate the expected values of the Betti numbers and anti-lecture hall composition corresponding to a random threshold graph.

Amenability and unique ergodicity of automorphism groups of countable homogeneous directed graphs
We study the automorphism groups of countable homogeneous directed graphs (and some additional homogeneous structures) from the point of view of topological dynamics. We determine precisely which of these automorphism groups are amenable (in their natural topologies). For those which are amenable, we determine whether they are uniquely ergodic, leaving unsettled precisely one case (the "semi-generic" complete multipartite directed graph). We also consider the Hrushovski property. For most of our results we use the various techniques of [3], suitably generalized to a context in which the universal minimal flow is not necessarily the space of all orders. Negative results concerning amenability rely on constructions of the type considered in [26]. An additional class of structures (compositions) may be handled directly on the basis of very general principles. The starting point in all cases is the determination of the universal minimal flow for the automorphism group, which in the context of countable homogeneous directed graphs is given in [10] and the papers cited therein.

Rigidity for the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the rigidity for the Hopf algebra ${\rm QSym}$ of quasisymmetric functions with respect to the monomial, the fundamental and the quasisymmetric Schur basis, respectively. By establishing some combinatorial properties of the posets of compositions arising from the analogous Pieri rules for quasisymmetric functions, we show that ${\rm QSym}$ is rigid as an algebra with respect to the quasisymmetric Schur basis, and rigid as a coalgebra with respect to the monomial and the quasisymmetric Schur basis, respectively. The natural actions of reversal, complement and transpose of the labelling compositions lead to some nontrivial graded (co)algebra automorphisms of ${\rm QSym}$. We prove that the linear maps induced by the three actions are precisely the only nontrivial graded algebra automorphisms that take the fundamental basis into itself. Furthermore, the complement map on the labels gives the unique nontrivial graded coalgebra automorphism preserving the fundamental basis, while the reversal map on the labels gives the unique nontrivial graded algebra automorphism preserving the monomial basis. Therefore, ${\rm QSym}$ is rigid as a Hopf algebra with respect to the monomial and the quasisymmetric Schur basis.

Positive Opetopes with Contractions form a Test Category
We show that the category of positive opetopes with contraction morphisms, i.e. all face maps and some degeneracies, forms a test category. The category of positive opetopic sets pOpeSet can be defined as a full subcategory of the category of polygraphs Poly. An object of pOpeSet has generators whose codomains are again generators and whose domains are non-identity cells (i.e. non-empty composition of generators). The category pOpeSet is a presheaf category with the exponent being called the category of positive opetopes pOpe. Objects of pOpe are called positive opetopes and morphisms are face maps only. Since Poly has a full-on-isomorphisms embedding into the category of omega-categories oCat, we can think of morphisms in pOpe as omega-functors that send generators to generators. The category of positive opetopes with contractions pOpe_iota has the same objects and face maps pOpe, but in addition it has some degeneracy maps. A morphism in pOpe_iota is an omega-functor that sends generators to either generators or to identities on generators. We show that the category pOpe_iota is a test category.

Permuted composition tableaux, 0-Hecke algebra and labeled binary trees
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 161: 420--452 (2019) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a generalization of semistandard composition tableaux called permuted composition tableaux. These tableaux are intimately related to permuted basement semistandard augmented fillings studied by Haglund, Mason and Remmel. Our primary motivation for studying permuted composition tableaux is to enumerate all possible ordered pairs of permutations $(σ_1,σ_2)$ that can be obtained by standardizing the entries in two adjacent columns of an arbitrary composition tableau. We refer to such pairs as compatible pairs. To study compatible pairs in depth, we define a $0$-Hecke action on permuted composition tableaux. This action naturally defines an equivalence relation on these tableaux. Certain distinguished representatives of the resulting equivalence classes in the special case of two-columned tableaux are in bijection with compatible pairs. We provide a bijection between two-columned tableaux and labeled binary trees. This bijection maps a quadruple of descent statistics for 2-columned tableaux to left and right ascent-descent statistics on labeled binary trees introduced by Gessel, and we use it to prove that the number of compatible pairs is $(n+1)^{n-1}$.

Maps on random hypergraphs and random simplicial complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $L$ be a simplicial complex. In this paper, we study random sub-hypergraphs and random sub-complexes of $L$. By considering the minimal complex that a sub-hypergraph can be embedded in and the maximal complex that can be embedded in a sub-hypergraph, we define some maps on the space of probability functions on sub-hypergraphs of $L$. We study the compositions of these maps as well as their actions on the space of probability functions.

$A$-Hypergeometric Modules and Gauss--Manin Systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $A$ be a $d$ by $n$ integer matrix. Gel'fand et al. proved that most $A$-hypergeometric systems have an interpretation as a Fourier--Laplace transform of a direct image. The set of parameters for which this happens was later identified by Schulze and Walther as the set of not strongly resonant parameters of $A$. A similar statement relating $A$-hypergeometric systems to exceptional direct images was proved by Reichelt. In this article, we consider a hybrid approach involving neighborhoods $U$ of the torus of $A$ and consider compositions of direct and exceptional direct images. Our main results characterize for which parameters the associated $A$-hypergeometric system is the inverse Fourier-Laplace transform of such a "mixed Gauss-Manin" system. In order to describe which $U$ work for such a parameter, we introduce the notions of fiber support and cofiber support of a D-module. If the semigroup ring of $A$ is normal, we show that every $A$-hypergeometric system is "mixed Gauss--Manin". We also give an explicit description of the neighborhoods $U$ which work for each parameter in terms of primitive integral support functions.

Kohnert polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We associate a polynomial to any diagram of unit cells in the first quadrant of the plane using Kohnert's algorithm for moving cells down. In this way, for every weak composition one can choose a cell diagram with corresponding row-counts, with each choice giving rise to a combinatorially-defined basis of polynomials. These Kohnert bases provide a simultaneous generalization of Schubert polynomials and Demazure characters for the general linear group. Using the monomial and fundamental slide bases defined earlier by the authors, we show that Kohnert polynomials stabilize to quasisymmetric functions that are nonnegative on the fundamental basis for quasisymmetric functions. For initial applications, we define and study two new Kohnert bases. The elements of one basis are conjecturally Schubert-positive and stabilize to the skew-Schur functions; the elements of the other basis stabilize to a new basis of quasisymmetric functions that contains the Schur functions.

Combinatorial Wall-Crossing and the Mullineux Involution
Published in J Algebr Comb 50 (2019), 49-72 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we define the combinatorial wall-crossing transformation and the generalized column regularization on partitions and prove that a certain composition of these two transformations has the same effect on the one-row partition $(n)$. As corollaries we explicitly describe the quotients of the partitions which arise in this process. We also prove that the one-row partition is the unique partition that stays regular at any step of the wall-crossing transformation.

Whirling injections, surjections, and other functions between finite sets
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 27:3, Combinatorics (December 10, 2025) dmtcs:14126 • View PublicationBIB
This paper analyzes a certain action called "whirling" that can be defined on any family of functions between two finite sets equipped with a linear (or cyclic) ordering. Many maps of interest in dynamical algebraic combinatorics, such as rowmotion of order ideals, can be represented as a composition of "toggling" involutions, each of which modifies its object only locally. Similarly whirling is made up of locally-acting whirling maps which directly generalize toggles, but cycle through more than two possible outputs. In this first paper on whirling, we consider it as a map on subfamilies of functions between finite sets. For whirling acting on the set of injections or the set of surjections, we prove that within each whirling orbit, any two elements of the codomain appear as outputs of functions the same number of times. This result can be stated in terms of the homomesy phenomenon, which occurs when a statistic has the same average across every orbit. We further explore homomesy results and conjectures for whirling on restricted-growth words, which correspond to set partitions. These results extend the collection of combinatorial objects for which we have interesting dynamics and homomesy, and open the door to considering whirling in other contexts.
