On Quadratic Embedding Constants of Star Product Graphs
A connected graph $G$ is of QE class if it admits a quadratic embedding in a Hilbert space, or equivalently if the distance matrix is conditionally negative definite, or equivalently if the quadratic embedding constant $\mathrm{QEC}(G)$ is non-positive. For a finite star product of (finite or infinite) graphs $G=G_1\star\dotsb \star G_r$ an estimate of $\mathrm{QEC}(G)$ is obtained after a detailed analysis of the minimal solution of a certain algebraic equation. For the path graph $P_n$ an implicit formula for $\mathrm{QEC}(P_n)$ is derived, and by limit argument $\mathrm{QEC}(\mathbb{Z})=\mathrm{QEC}(\mathbb{Z}_+)=-1/2$ is shown. During the discussion a new integer sequence is found.

Total perfect codes in graphs realized by commutative rings
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with unity not equal to zero and let $Γ(R)$ be a zero-divisor graph realized by $R$. For a simple, undirected, connected graph $G = (V, E)$, a {\it total perfect code} denoted by $C(G)$ in $G$ is a subset $C(G) \subseteq V(G)$ such that $|N(v) \cap C(G)| = 1$ for all $v \in V(G)$, where $N(v)$ denotes the open neighbourhood of a vertex $v$ in $G$. In this paper, we study total perfect codes in graphs which are realized as zero-divisor graphs. We show a zero-divisor graph realized by a local commutative ring with unity admits a total perfect code if and only if the graph has degree one vertices. We also show that if $Γ(R)$ is a regular graph on $|Z^*(R)|$ vertices, then $R$ is a reduced ring and $|Z^*(R)| \equiv 0(mod ~2)$, where $Z^*(R)$ is a set of non-zero zero-divisors of $R$. We provide a characterization for all commutative rings with unity of which the realized zero-divisor graphs admit total perfect codes. Finally, we determine the cardinality of a total perfect code in $Γ(R)$ and discuss the significance of the study of total perfect codes in graphs realized by commutative rings with unity.

Twists and Twistability
Published • View PublicationBIB
Metrically homogeneous graphs are connected graphs which, when endowed with the path metric, are homogeneous as metric spaces. In this paper we introduce the concept of twisted automorphisms, a notion of isomorphism up to a permutation of the language. We find all permutations of the language which are associated with twisted automorphisms of metrically homogeneous graphs. For each non-trivial permutation of this type we also characterize the class of metrically homogeneous graphs which allow a twisted isomorphism associated with that permutation. The permutations we find are, remarkably, precisely those found by Bannai and Bannai in an analogous result in the context of finite association schemes.

Extensions of Erdős-Gallai Theorem and Luo's Theorem with Applications

The famous Erdős-Gallai Theorem on the Turán number of paths states that every graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges contains a path with at least $\frac{2m}{n}$ edges. In this note, we first establish a simple but novel extension of the Erdős-Gallai Theorem by proving that every graph $G$ contains a path with at least $\frac{(s+1)N_{s+1}(G)}{N_{s}(G)}+s-1$ edges, where $N_j(G)$ denotes the number of $j$-cliques in $G$ for $1\leq j\leqω(G)$. We also construct a family of graphs which shows our extension improves the estimate given by Erdős-Gallai Theorem. Among applications, we show, for example, that the main results of \cite{L17}, which are on the maximum possible number of $s$-cliques in an $n$-vertex graph without a path with $l$ vertices (and without cycles of length at least $c$), can be easily deduced from this extension. Indeed, to prove these results, Luo \cite{L17} generalized a classical theorem of Kopylov and established a tight upper bound on the number of $s$-cliques in an $n$-vertex 2-connected graph with circumference less than $c$. We prove a similar result for an $n$-vertex 2-connected graph with circumference less than $c$ and large minimum degree. We conclude this paper with an application of our results to a problem from spectral extremal graph theory on consecutive lengths of cycles in graphs.
Finding induced subgraphs in scale-free inhomogeneous random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the problem of finding a copy of a specific induced subgraph on inhomogeneous random graphs with infinite variance power-law degrees. We provide a fast algorithm that finds a copy of any connected graph $H$ on a fixed number of $k$ vertices as an induced subgraph in a random graph with $n$ vertices. By exploiting the scale-free graph structure, the algorithm runs in $O(n k)$ time for small values of $k$. As a corollary, this shows that the induced subgraph isomorphism problem can be solved in time $O(nk)$ for the inhomogeneous random graph. We test our algorithm on several real-world data sets.

Spanning trees without adjacent vertices of degree 2

Albertson, Berman, Hutchinson, and Thomassen showed in 1990 that there exist highly connected graphs in which every spanning tree contains vertices of degree 2. Using a result of Alon and Wormald, we show that there exists a natural number $d$ such that every graph of minimum degree at least $d$ contains a spanning tree without adjacent vertices of degree 2. Moreover, we prove that every graph with minimum degree at least 3 has a spanning tree without three consecutive vertices of degree 2.

Fractional DP-Colorings of Sparse Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring developed recently by Dvořák and Postle. In this paper we introduce and study the fractional DP-chromatic number $χ_{DP}^\ast(G)$. We characterize all connected graphs $G$ such that $χ_{DP}^\ast(G) \leqslant 2$: they are precisely the graphs with no odd cycles and at most one even cycle. By a theorem of Alon, Tuza, and Voigt, the fractional list-chromatic number $χ_\ell^\ast(G)$ of any graph $G$ equals its fractional chromatic number $χ^\ast(G)$. This equality does not extend to fractional DP-colorings. Moreover, we show that the difference $χ^\ast_{DP}(G) - χ^\ast(G)$ can be arbitrarily large, and, furthermore, $χ^\ast_{DP}(G) \geq d/(2 \ln d)$ for every graph $G$ of maximum average degree $d \geq 4$. On the other hand, we show that this asymptotic lower bound is tight for a large class of graphs that includes all bipartite graphs as well as many graphs of high girth and high chromatic number.

Asymptotic Enumeration of Graph Classes with Many Components
Published in 2018 Proceedings of the Fifteenth Workshop on Analytic Algorithmics and Combinatorics (ANALCO), pp. 133--142 • View PublicationBIB
We consider graph classes $\mathcal G$ in which every graph has components in a class $\mathcal{C}$ of connected graphs. We provide a framework for the asymptotic study of $\lvert\mathcal{G}_{n,N}\rvert$, the number of graphs in $\mathcal{G}$ with $n$ vertices and $N:=\lfloorλn\rfloor$ components, where $λ\in(0,1)$. Assuming that the number of graphs with $n$ vertices in $\mathcal{C}$ satisfies \begin{align*} \lvert \mathcal{C}_n\rvert\sim b n^{-(1+α)}ρ^{-n}n!, \quad n\to \infty \end{align*} for some $b,ρ>0$ and $α>1$ -- a property commonly encountered in graph enumeration -- we show that \begin{align*} \lvert\mathcal{G}_{n,N}\rvert\sim c(λ) n^{f(λ)} (\log n)^{g(λ)} ρ^{-n}h(λ)^{N}\frac{n!}{N!}, \quad n\to \infty \end{align*} for explicitly given $c(λ),f(λ),g(λ)$ and $h(λ)$. These functions are piecewise continuous with a discontinuity at a critical value $λ^{*}$, which we also determine. The central idea in our approach is to sample objects of $\cal G$ randomly by so-called Boltzmann generators in order to translate enumerative problems to the analysis of iid random variables. By that we are able to exploit local limit theorems and large deviation results well-known from probability theory to prove our claims. The main results are formulated for generic combinatorial classes satisfying the SET-construction.

Improved bounds on the multicolor Ramsey numbers of paths and even cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the multicolor Ramsey numbers for paths and even cycles, $R_k(P_n)$ and $R_k(C_n)$, which are the smallest integers $N$ such that every coloring of the complete graph $K_N$ has a monochromatic copy of $P_n$ or $C_n$ respectively. For a long time, $R_k(P_n)$ has only been known to lie between $(k-1+o(1))n$ and $(k + o(1))n$. A recent breakthrough by Sárközy and later improvement by Davies, Jenssen and Roberts give an upper bound of $(k - \frac{1}{4} + o(1))n$. We improve the upper bound to $(k - \frac{1}{2}+ o(1))n$. Our approach uses structural insights in connected graphs without a large matching. These insights may be of independent interest.

Zeroth-order general Randic index of $k$-generalized quasi trees
For a simple graph $G(V,E)$, the zeroth-order general Randi\' c index is defined as $^0R_α(G)=\sum_{v\in V(G)}d(v)^α$, where $d(v)$ is the degree of the vertex $v$ and $α\ne0$ is a real number. The $k$-generalized quasi-tree is a connected graph $G$ with a subset $V_k\subset V(G)$, where $|V_k|=k$ such that $G-V_k$ is a tree, but for any subset $V_{k-1}\subset V(G)$ with cardinality $k-1$, $G-V_{k-1}$ is not a tree. In this paper, we characterize the extremal $k$-generalized quasi trees with the minimum and maximum values of the zeroth-order general Randi\' c index for $α\neq 0$.

On the roots of Wiener polynomials of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Wiener polynomial of a connected graph $G$ is defined as $W(G;x)=\sum x^{d(u,v)}$, where $d(u,v)$ denotes the distance between $u$ and $v$, and the sum is taken over all unordered pairs of distinct vertices of $G$. We examine the nature and location of the roots of Wiener polynomials of graphs, and in particular trees. We show that while the maximum modulus among all roots of Wiener polynomials of graphs of order $n$ is $\binom{n}{2}-1$, the maximum modulus among all roots of Wiener polynomials of trees of order $n$ grows linearly in $n$. We prove that the closure of the collection of real roots of Wiener polynomials of all graphs is precisely $(-\infty, 0]$, while in the case of trees, it contains $(-\infty, -1]$. Finally, we demonstrate that the imaginary parts and (positive) real parts of roots of Wiener polynomials can be arbitrarily large.

Approximately locating an invisible agent in a graph with relative distance queries

In a pursuit evasion game on a finite, simple, undirected, and connected graph $G$, a first player visits vertices $m_1,m_2,\ldots$ of $G$, where $m_{i+1}$ is in the closed neighborhood of $m_i$ for every $i$, and a second player probes arbitrary vertices $c_1,c_2,\ldots$ of $G$, and learns whether or not the distance between $c_{i+1}$ and $m_{i+1}$ is at most the distance between $c_i$ and $m_i$. Up to what distance $d$ can the second player determine the position of the first? For trees of bounded maximum degree and grids, we show that $d$ is bounded by a constant. We conjecture that $d=O(\log n)$ for every graph $G$ of order $n$, and show that $d=0$ if $m_{i+1}$ may differ from $m_i$ only if $i$ is a multiple of some sufficiently large integer.
Distinguishing density and the Distinct Spheres Condition
Published • View PublicationBIB
If a graph $G$ has distinguishing number 2, then there exists a partition of its vertex set into two parts, such that no nontrivial automorphism of $G$ fixes setwise the two parts. Such a partition is called a 2-distinguishing coloring of $G$, and the parts are called its color classes. If $G$ admits such a coloring, it is often possible to find another in which one of the color classes is sparse in a certain sense. In this case we say that $G$ has 2-distinguishing density zero. An extreme example of this would be an infinite graph admitting a 2-distinguishing coloring in which one of the color classes is finite. If a graph $G$ contains a vertex $v$ such that, for all $n \in \mathbb N$, any two distinct vertices equidistant from $v$ have nonequal $n$-spheres, then we say that $G$ satisfies the Distinct Spheres Condition. In this paper we prove a general result: any countable connected graph that satisfies the Distinct Spheres Condition is 2-distinguishable with density zero. We present two proofs of this, one that uses a deterministic coloring, and another (that applies only to locally finite graphs) using a random coloring. From this result, we deduce that several important families of countably infinite and connected graphs are 2-distinguishable with density zero, including those that are locally finite and primitive. Furthermore, we prove that any connected graph with infinite motion and subquadratic growth is 2-distinguishable with density zero.

We prove the conjecture of Seymour (1993) that for every apex-forest $H_1$ and outerplanar graph $H_2$ there is an integer $p$ such that every 2-connected graph of pathwidth at least $p$ contains $H_1$ or $H_2$ as a minor. An independent proof was recently obtained by Dang and Thomas.

n-Arc Connected Graphs
Given a graph G, of arbitrary size and unbounded vertex degree, denote by |G| the one-complex associated with $G$. The topological space |G| is n-arc connected (n-ac) if every set of no more than n points of |G| are contained in an arc (a homeomorphic copy of the closed unit interval). For any graph G, we show the following are equivalent: (i) |G| in 7-ac, (ii) |G| is n-ac for all n, and (iii) G is a subdivision of one of nine graphs. A graph G has |G| 6-ac if and only if either G is one of the nine 7-ac graphs, or, after suppressing all degree-2-vertices, the graph G is 3-regular, 3-connected, and removing any 6 edges does not disconnect G into 4 or more components. Similar combinatorial characterizations of graphs G such that |G| is n-ac for n=3, 4 and 5 are given. Together these results yield a complete classification of n-ac graphs, for all n.
Topological Representation of the Transit Sets of k-Point Crossover Operators
Published • View PublicationBIB
$k$-point crossover operators and their recombination sets are studied from different perspectives. We show that transit functions of $k$-point crossover generate, for all $k>1$, the same convexity as the interval function of the underlying graph. This settles in the negative an open problem by Mulder about whether the geodesic convexity of a connected graph $G$ is uniquely determined by its interval function $I$. The conjecture of Gitchoff and Wagner that for each transit set $R_k(x,y)$ distinct from a hypercube there is a unique pair of parents from which it is generated is settled affirmatively. Along the way we characterize transit functions whose underlying graphs are Hamming graphs, and those with underlying partial cube graphs. For general values of $k$ it is shown that the transit sets of $k$-point crossover operators are the subsets with maximal Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension. Moreover, the transit sets of $k$-point crossover on binary strings form topes of uniform oriented matroid of VC-dimension $k+1$. The Topological Representation Theorem for oriented matroids therefore implies that $k$-point crossover operators can be represented by pseudosphere arrangements. This provides the tools necessary to study the special case $k=2$ in detail.
Transversals of Longest Paths

Let $\lpt(G)$ be the minimum cardinality of a set of vertices that intersects all longest paths in a graph $G$. Let $ω(G)$ be the size of a maximum clique in $G$, and $\tw(G)$ be the treewidth of $G$. We prove that $ \lpt(G) \leq \max\{1,ω(G)-2\}$ when $G$ is a connected chordal graph; that $\lpt(G) =1$ when $G$ is a connected bipartite permutation graph or a connected full substar graph; and that $\lpt(G) \leq \tw(G)$ for any connected graph $G$.

A proof of Tomescu's graph coloring conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1971, Tomescu conjectured that every connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with chromatic number $k\geq4$ has at most $k!(k-1)^{n-k}$ proper $k$-colorings. Recently, Knox and Mohar proved Tomescu's conjecture for $k=4$ and $k=5$. In this paper, we complete the proof of Tomescu's conjecture for all $k\ge 4$, and show that equality occurs if and only if $G$ is a $k$-clique with trees attached to each vertex.

The edge-Hosoya polynomial of benzenoid chains
Published in J. Math. Chem. 57 (2019) 180-189 • View PublicationBIB
The Hosoya polynomial is a well known vertex-distance based polynomial, closely correlated to the Wiener index and the hyper-Wiener index, which are widely used molecular-structure descriptors. In the present paper we consider the edge version of the Hosoya polynomial. For a connected graph $G$ let $d_e(G,k)$ be the number of (unordered) edge pairs at distance $k$. Then the edge-Hosoya polynomial of $G$ is $H_e(G,x) = \sum_{k \geq 0} d(G,k)x^k$. We investigate the edge-Hosoya polynomial of important chemical graphs known as benzenoid chains and derive the recurrence relations for them. These recurrences are then solved for linear benzenoid chains, which are also called polyacenes.
On Generalized Edge Corona Product of Graphs
Let $G$ be a simple graph with $m$ edges and $H_i$, $1\leq i \leq m$ be simple graphs too. The generalized edge corona product of graphs $G$ and $H_1, ..., H_m$, denoted by $G \diamond (H_1, ..., H_m)$, is obtained by taking one copy of graphs $G$, $H_1, ..., H_m$ and joining two end vertices of $i$-th edge of $G$ to every vertex of $H_i$, $1\leq i \leq m$. In this paper, some results regarding the $k$-distance chromatic number of Generalized edge corona product of graphs are presented. Also, as a consequence of our results, we compute this invariant for the graphs $K_n \diamond (H_1, ..., H_m)$, $T\diamond (H_1, ..., H_m)$ and $K_{m,n} \diamond (H_1, ..., H_m)$. Moreover, the domination set, domination number and the independence number of any connected graph $G$ and arbitrary graphs $H_i$, $1\leq i \leq |E(G)|$, are evaluated under generalized edge corona operation.
