We consider a one-dimensional system of particles, moving at constant velocities chosen independently according to a symmetric distribution on $\{-1,0,+1\}$, and annihilating upon collision -- with, in case of triple collision, a uniformly random choice of survivor among the two moving particles. When the system contains infinitely many particles, whose starting locations are given by a renewal process, a phase transition was proved to happen (see arXiv:1811.08709) as the density of static particles crosses the value $1/4$. Remarkably, this critical value, along with certain other statistics, was observed not to depend on the distribution of interdistances. In the present paper, we investigate further this universality by proving a stronger statement about a finite system of particles with fixed, but randomly shuffled, interdistances. We give two proofs, one by an induction allowing explicit computations, and one by a more direct comparison. This result entails a new nontrivial independence property that in particular gives access to the density of surviving static particles at a given time in the infinite model. Finally, in the asymmetric case, further similar independence properties are proved to keep holding, including a striking property of gamma distributed interdistances that contrasts with the general behavior.
On the intersection problem for linear sets in the projective line

The aim of this paper is to investigate the intersection problem between two linear sets in the projective line over a finite field. In particular, we analyze the intersection between two clubs with eventually different maximum fields of linearity. Also, we analyze the intersection between the linear set defined by the polynomial $αx^{q^k}+βx$ and other linear sets having the same rank; this family contains the linear set of pseudoregulus type defined by $x^q$. The strategy relies on the study of certain algebraic curves whose rational points describe the intersection of the two linear sets. Among other geometric and algebraic tools, function field theory and the Hasse-Weil bound play a crucial role. As an application, we give asymptotic results on semifields of BEL-rank two.
Preprocessing Vertex-Deletion Problems: Characterizing Graph Properties by Low-Rank Adjacencies

We consider the $Π$-free Deletion problem parameterized by the size of a vertex cover, for a range of graph properties $Π$. Given an input graph $G$, this problem asks whether there is a subset of at most $k$ vertices whose removal ensures the resulting graph does not contain a graph from $Π$ as induced subgraph. Many vertex-deletion problems such as Perfect Deletion, Wheel-free Deletion, and Interval Deletion fit into this framework. We introduce the concept of characterizing a graph property $Π$ by low-rank adjacencies, and use it as the cornerstone of a general kernelization theorem for $Π$-Free Deletion parameterized by the size of a vertex cover. The resulting framework captures problems such as AT-Free Deletion, Wheel-free Deletion, and Interval Deletion. Moreover, our new framework shows that the vertex-deletion problem to perfect graphs has a polynomial kernel when parameterized by vertex cover, thereby resolving an open question by Fomin et al. [JCSS 2014]. Our main technical contribution shows how linear-algebraic dependence of suitably defined vectors over $\mathbb{F}_2$ implies graph-theoretic statements about the presence of forbidden induced subgraphs.

We prove that every graph of minimum degree at least $d \ge 1$ contains a subdivision of some maximal 3-degenerate graph of order $d+1$. This generalizes the classic results of Dirac ($d=3$) and Pelikán ($d=4$). We conjecture that for any planar maximal 3-degenerate graph $H$ of order $d+1$ and any graph $G$ of minimum degree at least $d$, $G$ contains a subdivision of $H$. We verify this in the case $H$ is $P_6^3$ and $P_7^3$

For a fixed graph $H$, the $H$-IS-Deletion problem asks, given a graph $G$, for the minimum size of a set $S \subseteq V(G)$ such that $G\setminus S$ does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph. Motivated by previous work about hitting (topological) minors and subgraphs on bounded treewidth graphs, we are interested in determining, for a fixed graph $H$, the smallest function $f_H(t)$ such that $H$-IS-Deletion can be solved in time $f_H(t) \cdot n^{O(1)}$ assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH), where $t$ and $n$ denote the treewidth and the number of vertices of the input graph, respectively.
We show that $f_H(t) = 2^{O(t^{h-2})}$ for every graph $H$ on $h \geq 3$ vertices, and that $f_H(t) = 2^{O(t)}$ if $H$ is a clique or an independent set. We present a number of lower bounds by generalizing a reduction of Cygan et al. [MFCS 2014] for the subgraph version. In particular, we show that when $H$ deviates slightly from a clique, the function $f_H(t)$ suffers a sharp jump: if $H$ is obtained from a clique of size $h$ by removing one edge, then $f_H(t) = 2^{Θ(t^{h-2})}$. We also show that $f_H(t) = 2^{Ω(t^{h})}$ when $H=K_{h,h}$, and this reduction answers an open question of Mi. Pilipczuk [MFCS 2011] about the function $f_{C_4}(t)$ for the subgraph version.
Motivated by Cygan et al. [MFCS 2014], we also consider the colorful variant of the problem, where each vertex of $G$ is colored with some color from $V(H)$ and we require to hit only induced copies of $H$ with matching colors. In this case, we determine, under the ETH, the function $f_H(t)$ for every connected graph $H$ on $h$ vertices: if $h\leq 2$ the problem can be solved in polynomial time; if $h\geq 3$, $f_H(t) = 2^{Θ(t)}$ if $H$ is a clique, and $f_H(t) = 2^{Θ(t^{h-2})}$ otherwise.
Badges and rainbow matchings

Drisko proved that $2n-1$ matchings of size $n$ in a bipartite graph have a rainbow matching of size $n$. For general graphs it is conjectured that $2n$ matchings suffice for this purpose (and that $2n-1$ matchings suffice when $n$ is even). The known graphs showing sharpness of this conjecture for $n$ even are called badges. We improve the previously best known bound from $3n-2$ to $3n-3$, using a new line of proof that involves analysis of the appearance of badges. We also prove a "cooperative" generalization: for $t>0$ and $n \geq 3$, any $3n-4+t$ sets of edges, the union of every $t$ of which contains a matching of size $n$, have a rainbow matching of size $n$.

Which finite sets $P \subseteq \mathbb{Z}^r$ with $|P| \ge 3$ have the following property: for every $A \subseteq [N]^r$, there is some nonzero integer $d$ such that $A$ contains $(α^{|P|} - o(1))N^r$ translates of $d \cdot P = \{d p : p \in P\}$, where $α= |A|/N^r$?
Green showed that all 3-point $P \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ have the above property. Green and Tao showed that 4-point sets of the form $P = \{a, a+b, a+c, a+b+c\} \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ also have the property. We show that no other sets have the above property. Furthermore, for various $P$, we provide new upper bounds on the number of translates of $d \cdot P$ that one can guarantee to find.
Complete Edge-Colored Permutation Graphs

We introduce the concept of complete edge-colored permutation graphs as complete graphs that are the edge-disjoint union of "classical" permutation graphs. We show that a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a complete edge-colored permutation graph if and only if each monochromatic subgraph of $G$ is a "classical" permutation graph and $G$ does not contain a triangle with~$3$ different colors. Using the modular decomposition as a framework we demonstrate that complete edge-colored permutation graphs are characterized in terms of their strong prime modules, which induce also complete edge-colored permutation graphs. This leads to an $\mathcal{O}(|V|^2)$-time recognition algorithm. We show, moreover, that complete edge-colored permutation graphs form a superclass of so-called symbolic ultrametrics and that the coloring of such graphs is always a Gallai coloring.
Turán and Ramsey-type results for unavoidable subgraphs
We study Turán and Ramsey-type problems on edge-colored graphs. An edge-colored graph is called {\em $\varepsilon$-balanced} if each color class contains at least an $\varepsilon$-proportion of its edges. Given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of edge-colored graphs, the Ramsey function $R(\varepsilon, \mathcal{F})$ is the smallest $n$ for which any $\varepsilon$-balanced $K_n$ must contain a copy of an $F\in\mathcal{F}$, and the Turán function $\mathrm{ex}(\varepsilon, n, \mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $\varepsilon$-balanced graph which avoids all of $\mathcal{F}$. In this paper, we consider this Turán function for several classes of edge-colored graphs, we show that the Ramsey function is linear for bounded degree graphs, and we prove a theorem that gives a relationship between the two parameters.

For an arbitrary rational polyhedron we consider its decompositions into Minkowski summands and, dual to this, the free extensions of the associated pair of semigroups. Being free for the pair of semigroups is equivalent to flatness for the corresponding algebras. Our main result is phrased in this dual setup: the category of free extensions always contains an initial object, which we describe explicitly. These objects seem to be related to unique liftings in log geometry. Further motivation comes from the deformation theory of the associated toric singularity.

We consider substitution tilings in R^d that give rise to point sets that are not bounded displacement (BD) equivalent to a lattice and study the cardinality of BD(X), the set of distinct BD class representatives in the corresponding tiling space X. We prove a sufficient condition under which the tiling space contains continuously many distinct BD classes and present such an example in the plane. In particular, we show here for the first time that this cardinality can be greater than one.

Covering $\mathsf{Irrep}(S_n)$ With Tensor Products and Powers

We study when a tensor product of irreducible representations of the symmetric group $S_n$ contains all irreducibles as subrepresentations; we say such a tensor product covers $\mathsf{Irrep}(S_n)$. Our results show that this behavior is typical. We first give a general sufficient criterion for tensor products to have this property, which holds asymptotically almost surely for constant-sized collections of (Plancherel or uniformly) random irreducibles. We also consider the minimal tensor power of a single fixed irreducible representation needed to cover $\mathsf{Irrep}(S_n)$. Here a simple lower bound comes from considering dimensions, and we show it is always tight up to a universal constant factor as was recently conjectured by Liebeck, Shalev, and Tiep.

The Lescure-Meyniel conjecture is the analogue of Hadwiger's conjecture for the immersion order. It states that every graph $G$ contains the complete graph $K_{χ(G)}$ as an immersion, and like its minor-order counterpart it is open even for graphs with independence number 2. We show that every graph $G$ with independence number $α(G)\ge 2$ and no hole of length between $4$ and $2α(G)$ satisfies this conjecture. In particular, every $C_4$-free graph $G$ with $α(G)= 2$ satisfies the Lescure-Meyniel conjecture. We give another generalisation of this corollary, as follows. Let $G$ and $H$ be graphs with independence number at most 2, such that $|V(H)|\le 4$. If $G$ is $H$-free, then $G$ satisfies the Lescure-Meyniel conjecture.
A Dirac-type theorem for uniform hypergraphs

Dirac (1952) proved that every connected graph of order $n>2k+1$ with minimum degree more than $k$ contains a path of length at least $2k+1$. Erdős and Gallai (1959) showed that every $n$-vertex graph $G$ with average degree more than $k-1$ contains a path of length $k$. The hypergraph extension of the Erdős-Gallai Theorem have been given by Győri, Katona, Lemons~(2016) and Davoodi et al.~(2018). Füredi, Kostochka, and Luo (2019) gave a connected version of the Erdős-Gallai Theorem for hypergraphs. In this paper, we give a hypergraph extension of the Dirac's Theorem: Given positive integers $n,k$ and $r$, let $H$ be a connected $n$-vertex $r$-graph with no Berge path of length $2k+1$. We show that (1) If $k> r\ge 4$ and $n>2k+1$, then $δ_1(H)\le\binom{k}{r-1}$. Furthermore, the equality holds if and only if $S'_r(n,k)\subseteq H\subseteq S_r(n,k)$ or $H\cong S(sK_{k+1}^{(r)},1)$; (2) If $k\ge r\ge 2$ and $n>2k(r-1)$, then $δ_1(H)\le \binom{k}{r-1}$. The result is also a Dirac-type version of the result of Füredi, Kostochka, and Luo. As an application of (1), we give a better lower bound of the minimum degree than the ones in the Dirac-type results for Berge Hamiltonian cycle given by Bermond et al.~(1976) and Clemens et al. (2016), respectively.
Erdős-Hajnal-type results for ordered paths

An ordered graph is a graph with a linear ordering on its vertex set. We prove that for every positive integer $k$, there exists a constant $c_k>0$ such that any ordered graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with the property that neither $G$ nor its complement contains an induced monotone path of size $k$, has either a clique or an independent set of size at least $n^{c_k}$. This strengthens a result of Bousquet, Lagoutte, and Thomassé, who proved the analogous result for unordered graphs.
A key idea of the above paper was to show that any unordered graph on $n$ vertices that does not contain an induced path of size $k$, and whose maximum degree is at most $c(k)n$ for some small $c(k)>0$, contains two disjoint linear size subsets with no edge between them. This approach fails for ordered graphs, because the analogous statement is false for $k\geq 3$, by a construction of Fox. We provide further examples how this statement fails for ordered graphs avoiding other ordered trees as well.
On the convexity number of the complementary prism of a tree
A set of vertices $S$ of a graph $G$ is a (geodesic)convex set, if $S$ contains all the vertices belonging to any shortest path connecting between two vertices of $S$. The cardinality of maximum proper convex set of $G$ is called the convexity number, con$(G)$ of $G$. The complementary prism $G\bar{G}$ of $G$ is obtained from the disjoint union of $G$ and its complement $\bar{G}$ by adding the edges of a perfect matching between them. In this work, we examine the convex sets of the complementary prism of a tree and derive formulas for the convexity numbers of the complementary prisms of all trees.
Large cliques and independent sets all over the place

We study the following question raised by Erdős and Hajnal in the early 90's. Over all $n$-vertex graphs $G$ what is the smallest possible value of $m$ for which any $m$ vertices of $G$ contain both a clique and an independent set of size $\log n$? We construct examples showing that $m$ is at most $2^{2^{(\log\log n)^{1/2+o(1)}}}$ obtaining a twofold sub-polynomial improvement over the upper bound of about $\sqrt{n}$ coming from the natural guess, the random graph. Our (probabilistic) construction gives rise to new examples of Ramsey graphs, which while having no very large homogenous subsets contain both cliques and independent sets of size $\log n$ in any small subset of vertices. This is very far from being true in random graphs. Our proofs are based on an interplay between taking lexicographic products and using randomness.

Given a large graph $H$, does the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$ contain a copy of $H$ as an induced subgraph with high probability? This classical question has been studied extensively for various graphs $H$, going back to the study of the independence number of $G(n,p)$ by Erdős and Bollobás, and Matula in 1976. In this paper we prove an asymptotically best possible result for induced matchings by showing that if $C/n\le p \le 0.99$ for some large constant $C$, then $G(n,p)$ contains an induced matching of order approximately $2\log_q(np)$, where $q= \frac{1}{1-p}$.
C4-free subgraphs with large average degree

Motivated by a longstanding conjecture of Thomassen, we study how large the average degree of a graph needs to be to imply that it contains a $C_4$-free subgraph with average degree at least $t$. Kühn and Osthus showed that an average degree bound which is double exponential in t is sufficient. We give a short proof of this bound, before reducing it to a single exponential. That is, we show that any graph $G$ with average degree at least $2^{ct^2\log t}$ (for some constant $c>0$) contains a $C_4$-free subgraph with average degree at least $t$. Finally, we give a construction which improves the lower bound for this problem, showing that this initial average degree must be at least $t^{3-o(1)}$.
