An $O(n\log^2n)$ Algorithm for Computing Hankel Determinants up to Order $n$
Given the rational power series $h(x) = \sum_{i \geq 0} h_i x^i \in \mathbb{C}[[x]]$, the Hankel determinant of order $n$ is defined as $H_n(h(x)) := \det (h_{i+j})_{0 \leq i,j \leq n-1}$. We explore the relationship between the Hankel continued fraction and the generalized Sturm sequence. This connection inspires the development of a novel algorithm for computing the Hankel determinants $\{H_i(h(x))\}_{i=0}^{n-1}$ using $O(n \log^2 n)$ arithmetic operations. We also explore the connection between the generalized Sturm sequences and the signature of Hankel matrices.
Cauchy-type identities through collocation matrices
We present a broader framework for the Cauchy identity derived from the determinant expansion of collocation matrices. This approach yields an infinite family of identities, where the original Cauchy identity stands as a particular case. To illustrate the versatility and depth of this approach, we provide a range of compelling examples, showcasing the connections and applications of these novel identities.
Ehrhart Polynomials of Order Polytopes: Interpreting Combinatorial Sequences on the OEIS
In this paper, we provide an overview of Ehrhart polynomials associated with order polytopes of finite posets, a concept first introduced by Stanley. We focus on their combinatorial interpretations for many sequences listed on the OEIS. We begin by exploring the Ehrhart series of order polytopes resulting from various poset operations, specifically the ordinal sum and direct sum. We then concentrate on the poset $P_λ$ associated with the Ferrers diagram of a partition $λ= (λ_1, λ_2, \ldots, λ_t)$. When $λ= (k, k-1, \ldots, 1)$, the Ehrhart polynomial is a shifted Hankel determinant of the well-known Catalan numbers; when $λ= (k, k, \ldots, k)$, the Ehrhart polynomial is solved by Stanley's hook content formula and is used to prove conjectures for the sequence [A140934] on the OEIS. When solving these problems, we rediscover Kreweras' determinant formula for the Ehrhart polynomial $\mathrm{ehr}(\mathcal{O}(P_λ), n)$ through the application of the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot lemma on non-intersecting lattice paths.
English Translation of "Über Graphen und ihre Anwendung auf Determinantentheorie und Mengenlehre" by Dénes Kőnig
The presented work focuses on problems from determinant theory, set theory and topology. The term graph is the binding element that connects these problems. Graphs are distinguished by their geometrical simplicity, which helps in showing the equivalence between various seemingly unrelated problems, besides providing solutions to several open questions discussed here.
Determinantal representations of alternating run polynomials
Based on a determinantal formula for the higher derivative of a quotient of two functions, we first present the determinantal expressions of Eulerian polynomials and Andre polynomials. In particular, we discover that the Euler number (number of alternating permutations) can be expressed as a lower Hessenberg determinant. We then investigate the determinantal representations of the up-down run polynomials and the types A and B alternating run polynomials. As applications, we deduce several new recurrence relations, which imply the multiplicity of -1 in these three kinds of polynomials. And then, we provide two determinantal representations for the alternating run polynomials of dual Stirling permutations. In particular, we discover a close connection between the alternating run polynomials of dual Stirling permutations and the type B Eulerian polynomials.
$q$-deformation of chromatic polynomials and graphical arrangements
We first observe a mysterious similarity between the braid arrangement and the arrangement of all hyperplanes in a vector space over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. These two arrangements are defined by the determinants of the Vandermonde and the Moore matrix, respectively. These two matrices are transformed to each other by replacing a natural number $n$ with $q^n$ ($q$-deformation).
In this paper, we introduce the notion of ``$q$-deformation of graphical arrangements'' as certain subarrangements of the arrangement of all hyperplanes over $\mathbb{F}_q$. This new class of arrangements extends the relationship between the Vandermonde and Moore matrices to graphical arrangements. We show that many invariants of the ``$q$-deformation'' behave as ``$q$-deformation'' of invariants of the graphical arrangements. Such invariants include the characteristic (chromatic) polynomial, the Stirling number of the second kind, freeness, exponents, basis of logarithmic vector fields, etc.
The Chain Matrix of Bouquets of Geometric Lattices and its Determinant
This work builds on Varchenko et al's introduction of bilinear forms for hyperplane arrangements, where the determinant of the associated matrices factorizes into simple components. While one of the determinant formula developed by Varchenko has been generalized to complexes of oriented matroids (COMs) already, this question was open for another, distinct form. Motivated by work from Varchenko and Brylawski, who generalized the alternative bilinear form and its determinant formula from hyperplane arrangements to matroids, we examine whether this formula can similarly be generalized to COMs. Our findings affirm this generalization, and we further extend the determinant formula to bouquets of geometric lattices as introduced by Laurent et al.
On the Gram determinants of the Specht modules
For every partition $λ$ of a positive integer $n$, let $S^λ$ be the corresponding Specht module of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$, and let $\det(λ)\in \mathbb Z$ denote the Gram determinant of the canonical bilinear form with respect to the standard basis of $S^λ$. Writing $\det(λ)=m \cdot 2^{a_λ^{(2)}}$ for integers $a_λ^{(2)}$ and $m$ with $m$ odd, we show that if the dimension of $S^λ$ is even, then $a_λ^{(2)}$ is also even. This confirms a conjecture posed by Richard Parker in the special case of the symmetric groups.
RSK as a linear operator
The Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence (RSK) is a bijection between nonnegative integer matrices and pairs of Young tableaux. We study it as a linear operator on the coordinate ring of matrices, proving results about its diagonalizability, eigenvalues, trace, and determinant. Our criterion for diagonalizability involves the $ADE$ classification of Dynkin diagrams, as well as the diagram for $E_9$.
Combinatorial connections in snake graphs: Tilings, lattice paths, and perfect matchings
Snake graphs and their perfect matchings play a key role in the description of cluster variables of cluster algebras associated to surfaces. In this paper, we introduce triangular snake graphs and establish a bijection between their routes (non-intersecting lattice paths), perfect matchings of their underlying snake graphs, and tilings. As an application, we show that the number of perfect matchings in straight snake graphs can be expressed in terms of determinants of Hankel matrices with Catalan number entries. Moreover, we prove that the number of perfect matchings in snake graphs can be expressed as a sum of products of Fibonacci numbers, and we show how Fibonacci and Pell sequences arise from determinants of matrices with Fibonacci entries.
Non-commutative friezes and their determinants, the non-commutative Laurent phenomenon for weak friezes, and frieze gluing
This paper studies a non-commutative generalisation of Coxeter friezes due to Berenstein and Retakh. It generalises several earlier results to this situation: A formula for frieze determinants, a $T$-path formula expressing the Laurent phenomenon, and results on gluing friezes together. One of our tools is a non-commutative version of the weak friezes introduced by Canakci and Jorgensen.
Bounds on the exceptional set in the $abc$ conjecture
We study solutions to the equation $a+b=c$, where $a,b,c$ form a triple of coprime natural numbers. The $abc$ conjecture asserts that, for any $ε>0$, such triples satisfy $\mathrm{rad}(abc) \ge c^{1-ε}$ with finitely many exceptions. In this article we obtain a power-saving bound on the exceptional set of triples. Specifically, we show that there are $O(X^{33/50})$ integer triples $(a,b,c)\in [1,X]^3$, which satisfy $\mathrm{rad}(abc) < c^{1-ε}$. The proof is based on a combination of bounds for the density of integer points on varieties, coming from the determinant method, Thue equations, geometry of numbers, and Fourier analysis.

We show factorization formulas for a class of partition functions of rational six vertex model. First we show factorization formulas for partition functions under triangular boundary. Further, by combining the factorization formulas with the explicit forms of the generalized domain wall boundary partition functions by Belliard-Pimenta-Slavnov, we derive factorization formulas for partition functions under trapezoid boundary which can be viewed as a generalization of triangular boundary. We also discuss an application to emptiness formation probabilities under trapezoid boundary which admit determinant representations.
Characterizing and Testing Principal Minor Equivalence of Matrices
Two matrices are said to be principal minor equivalent if they have equal corresponding principal minors of all orders. We give a characterization of principal minor equivalence and a deterministic polynomial time algorithm to check if two given matrices are principal minor equivalent. Earlier such results were known for certain special cases like symmetric matrices, skew-symmetric matrices with {0, 1, -1}-entries, and matrices with no cuts (i.e., for any non-trivial partition of the indices, the top right block or the bottom left block must have rank more than 1).
As an immediate application, we get an algorithm to check if the determinantal point processes corresponding to two given kernel matrices (not necessarily symmetric) are the same. As another application, we give a deterministic polynomial-time test to check equality of two multivariate polynomials, each computed by a symbolic determinant with a rank 1 constraint on coefficient matrices.
Hankel Determinants for a Class of Weighted Lattice Paths
In this paper, our primary goal is to calculate the Hankel determinants for a class of lattice paths, which are distinguished by the step set consisting of \(\{(1,0), (2,0), (k-1,1), (-1,1)\}\), where the parameter \(k\geq 4\). These paths are constrained to return to the $x$-axis and remain above the \(x\)-axis.
When calculating for \(k = 4\), the problem essentially reduces to determining the Hankel determinant of \(E(x)\), where \(E(x)\) is defined as \[ E(x) = \frac{a}{E(x)x^2(dx^2 - bx - 1) + cx^2 + bx + 1}. \] Our approach involves employing the Sulanke-Xin continued fraction transform to derive a set of recurrence relations, which in turn yield the desired results. For \(k \geq 5\), we utilize a class of shifted periodic continued fractions as defined by Wang-Xin-Zhai, thereby obtaining the results presented in this paper.
Symmetrizations of quadratic and hermitian forms
The paper develops elementary linear algebra methods to compute the determinants of the tensor symmetrizations of quadratic and hermitian forms over fields of good characteristic. Explicit results are given for the partitions $(n)$, $(1^n)$, $(2,1^{n-2})$ and $(3,1^{n-3})$ as well as for all partitions of $n\leq 7$. For orthogonal groups these symmetrizations are not irreducible and we continue to find the determinants of their irreducible constituents, the refined symmetrizations, over fields of characteristic 0.
On the second moment of the determinant of random symmetric, Wigner, and Hermitian matrices
In this paper, we analyze the second moment of the determinant of random symmetric, Wigner, and Hermitian matrices. Using analytic combinatorics techniques, we determine the second moment of the determinant of Hermitian matrices whose entries on the diagonal are i.i.d and whose entries above the diagonal are i.i.d. and have real expected values. Our results extend previous work analyzing the second moment of the determinant of symmetric and Wigner matrices, providing a unified approach for this analysis.
Computing the determinant of links through Fourier-Hadamard transforms
In this paper, we present a novel method to compute the determinant of a link using Fourier-Hadamard transforms of Boolean functions. We also investigate the determinant of centrally symmetric links (a special class of strong achiral links). In particular, we show that the determinant of a centrally symmetric link with an even number of components is equals zero.
Christoffel Matrices and Sturmian Determinants
We discuss certain matrices associated with Christoffel words, and show that they have a group structure. We compute their determinants and show a relationship between the Zolotareff symbol from number theory.
On some determinant conjectures
Let $p$ be a prime and $c,d\in\mathbb{Z}$. Sun introduced the determinant $D_p^-(c,d):=\det[(i^2+cij+dj^2)^{p-2}]_{1<i,j<p-1}$ for $p>3$. In this paper, we confirm three conjectures on $D_p^-(c,d)$ proposed by Zhi-Wei Sun.
