Riordan graphs II: Spectral properties
Published • View PublicationBIB
The authors of this paper have used the theory of Riordan matrices to introduce the notion of a Riordan graph in \cite{CJKM}. Riordan graphs are proved to have a number of interesting (fractal) properties, and they are a far-reaching generalization of the well known and well studied Pascal graphs and Toeplitz graphs, and also some other families of graphs. The main focus in \cite{CJKM} is the study of structural properties of families of Riordan graphs obtained from certain infinite Riordan graphs. In this paper, we use a number of results in~\cite{CJKM} to study spectral properties of Riordan graphs. Our studies include, but are not limited to the spectral graph invariants for Riordan graphs such as the adjacency eigenvalues, (signless) Laplacian eigenvalues, nullity, positive and negative inertias, and rank. We also study determinants of Riordan graphs, in particular, giving results about determinants of Catalan graphs.

Catalan numbers, Hankel determinants and Fibonacci polynomials
This (partly expository) paper originated from the study of Hankel determinants of convolution powers of Catalan numbers and of Narayana polynomials. This led to some Hankel determinants of signed Catalan numbers whose values are multiples of Fibonacci numbers and to some Hankel determinants of signed central binomial coefficients whose values are multiples of Lucas numbers. Most proofs are computational but we also include a combinatorial one due to Christian Krattenthaler. Finally we formulate some conjectures.

An Elementary Dyadic Riemann Hypothesis
The connection zeta function of a finite abstract simplicial complex G is defined as zeta_L(s)=sum_x 1/lambda_x^s, where lambda_x are the eigenvalues of the connection Laplacian L defined by L(x,y)=1 if x and y intersect and 0 else. (I) As a consequence of the spectral formula chi(G)=sum_x (-1)^dim(x) = p(G)-n(G), where p(G) is the number of positive eigenvalues and n(G) is the number of negative eigenvalues of L, both the Euler characteristic chi(G)=zeta(0)-2 i zeta'(0)/pi as well as determinant det(L)=e^zeta'(0)/pi can be written in terms of zeta. (II) As a consequence of the generalized Cauchy-Binet formula for the coefficients of the characteristic polynomials of a product of matrices we show that for every one-dimensional simplicial complex G, the functional equation zeta(s)=zeta(-s) holds, where zeta(s) is the Zeta function of the positive definite squared connection operator L^2 of G. Equivalently, the spectrum sigma of the integer matrix L^2 for a 1-dimensional complex always satisfies the symmetry sigma = 1/sigma and the characteristic polynomial of L^2 is palindromic. The functional equation extends to products of one-dimensional complexes. (III) Explicit expressions for the spectrum of circular connection Laplacian lead to an explicit entire zeta function in the Barycentric limit. The situation is simpler than in the Hodge Laplacian H=D^2 case where no functional equation was available. In the connection Laplacian case, the limiting zeta function is a generalized hypergeometric function which for an integer s is given by an elliptic integral over the real elliptic curve w^2=(1+z)(1-z)(z^2-4z-1), which has the analytic involutive symmetry (z,w) to (1/z,w/z^2).

On the determinants and permanents of matrices with restricted entries over prime fields
Published in Pacific J. Math. 300 (2019) 405-417 • View PublicationBIB
Let $A$ be a set in a prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$. In this paper, we prove that $d\times d$ matrices with entries in $A$ determine almost $|A|^{3+\frac{1}{45}}$ distinct determinants and almost $|A|^{2-\frac{1}{6}}$ distinct permanents when $|A|$ is small enough.

Computation of Maximal Determinants of Binary Circulant Matrices
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences 21 (2018), article 18.5.6, 19 pp • Search Publication
We describe algorithms for computing maximal determinants of binary circulant matrices of small orders. Here "binary matrix" means a matrix whose elements are drawn from $\{0,1\}$ or $\{-1,1\}$. We describe efficient parallel algorithms for the search, using Duval's algorithm for generation of necklaces and the well-known representation of the determinant of a circulant in terms of roots of unity. Tables of maximal determinants are given for orders $\le 53$. Our computations extend earlier results and disprove two plausible conjectures.

On the tensor rank of $3\times 3$ permanent and determinant
The tensor rank and border rank of the $3 \times 3$ determinant tensor is known to be $5$ if characteristic is not two. In this paper, we show that the tensor rank remains $5$ for fields of characteristic two as well. We also include an analysis of $5 \times 5$ and $7 \times 7$ determinant and permanent tensors, as well as the symmetric $3 \times 3$ permanent and determinant tensors. We end with some remarks on binary tensors.

Inverting non-invertible trees
If a graph has a non-singular adjacency matrix, then one may use the inverse matrix to define a (labeled) graph that may be considered to be the inverse graph to the original one. It has been known that an adjacency matrix of a tree is non-singular if and only if the tree has a unique perfect matching; in this case the determinant of the matrix turns out to be $\pm 1$ and the inverse of the tree was shown to be `switching-equivalent' to a simple graph [C. Godsil, Inverses of Trees, Combinatorica 5 (1985), 33--39]. Using generalized inverses of symmetric matrices (that coincide with Moore-Penrose, Drazin, and group inverses in the symmetric case) we prove a formula for determining a `generalized inverse' of a tree.

Pieri rules for the Jack polynomials in superspace and the 6-vertex model
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present Pieri rules for the Jack polynomials in superspace. The coefficients in the Pieri rules are, except for an extra determinant, products of quotients of linear factors in $α$ (expressed, as in the usual Jack polynomial case, in terms of certain hook-lengths in a Ferrers' diagram). We show that, surprisingly, the extra determinant is related to the partition function of the 6-vertex model. We give, as a conjecture, the Pieri rules for the Macdonald polynomials in superspace.

Maximal determinants of combinatorial matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that $\det A\leq 6^\frac{n}{6}$ whenever $A\in\{0,1\}^{n\times n}$ contains at most $2n$ ones. We also prove an upper bound on the determinant of matrices with the $k$-consecutive ones property, a generalisation of the consecutive ones property, where each row is allowed to have up to $k$ blocks of ones. Finally, we prove an upper bound on the determinant of a path-edge incidence matrix in a tree and use that to bound the leaf rank of a graph in terms of its order.

Recovering Lexicographic Triangulations
Given a finite set $V=\{v^1, \dots, v^n\} \subset \mathbb R^d$ with dim conv $(V)=d$, a triangulation $T$ of $V$ is a collection of distinct subsets $\{T_1, \dots, T_m\}$ where $T_i \subseteq V$ is the vertex set of a $d$-simplex, $\mathrm{conv} (V)=\bigcup_{i=1}^m \mathrm{conv} (T_i)$, and $T_i \cap T_j$ is a common (possibly empty) face of both $T_i$ and $T_j$. Associated with each triangulation $T$ of $V$ is the GKZ-vector $φ(T)=(z_1, \dots, z_n)$ where $z_i$ is the sum of the volumes of all $d$-simplices of $T$ having $v^i \in V$ as a vertex. It is clear that given $V$ and a triangulation $T$ we can find $φ(T)$. The focus of this paper is recovering a lexicographic triangulation from its GKZ-vector. The motivation for studying triangulations and their GKZ-vectors arises from the work of Gel'fand, Kapranov, and Zelevinskiǐ in which they illuminate connections between regular triangulations and subdivisions of Newton polytopes, and generalized discriminants and determinants. The secondary polytope, $Σ(V)$, of an arbitrary finite point set $V \subset \mathbb R^d$, introduced by Gel'fand, Kapranov, and Zelevinskiǐ, is defined to be the convex hull of the GKZ-vectors of all triangulations of $V$. They showed the vertices of $Σ(V)$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the regular triangulations of $V$. Since the GKZ-vector of a regular triangulation is uniquely associated with that triangulation, a natural question is how that triangulation can be recovered from its vector. We answer this question in the case that the associated triangulation is lexicographic.

Checkerboard style Schur multiple zeta values and odd single zeta values
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give explicit formulas for the recently introduced Schur multiple zeta values, which generalize multiple zeta(-star) values and which assign to a Young tableaux a real number. In this note we consider Young tableaux of various shapes, filled with alternating entries like a Checkerboard. In particular we obtain new sum representation for odd single zeta values in terms of these Schur multiple zeta values. As a special case we show that some Schur multiple zeta values of Checkerboard style, filled with 1 and 3, are given by determinants of matrices with odd single zeta values as entries.

On the $A_α$-characteristic polynomial of a graph
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 546 (2018) 274--288 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices, and let $A(G)$ and $D(G)$ denote respectively the adjacency matrix and the degree matrix of $G$. Define $$ A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G) $$ for any real $α\in [0,1]$. The $A_α$-characteristic polynomial of $G$ is defined to be $$ \det(xI_n-A_α(G))=\sum_jc_{αj}(G)x^{n-j}, $$ where $\det(*)$ denotes the determinant of $*$, and $I_n$ is the identity matrix of size $n$. The $A_α$-spectrum of $G$ consists of all roots of the $A_α$-characteristic polynomial of $G$. A graph $G$ is said to be determined by its $A_α$-spectrum if all graphs having the same $A_α$-spectrum as $G$ are isomorphic to $G$. In this paper, we first formulate the first four coefficients $c_{α0}(G)$, $c_{α1}(G)$, $c_{α2}(G)$ and $c_{α3}(G)$ of the $A_α$-characteristic polynomial of $G$. And then, we observe that $A_α$-spectra are much efficient for us to distinguish graphs, by enumerating the $A_α$-characteristic polynomials for all graphs on at most 10 vertices. To verify this observation, we characterize some graphs determined by their $A_α$-spectra.

Proof of a conjecture of Morales-Pak-Panova on reverse plane partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using equivariant cohomology theory, Naruse obtained a hook length formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of skew shape $λ/μ$. Morales, Pak and Panova found two $q$-analogues of Naruse's formula respectively by counting semistandard Young tableaux of shape $λ/μ$ and reverse plane partitions of shape $λ/μ$. When $λ$ and $μ$ are both staircase shape partitions, Morales, Pak and Panova conjectured that the generating function of reverse plane partitions of shape $λ/ μ$ can be expressed as a determinant whose entries are related to $q$-analogues of the Euler numbers. The objective of this paper is to prove this conjecture.

The Varchenko Determinant of a Coxeter Arrangement
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Varchenko determinant is the determinant of a matrix defined from an arrangement of hyperplanes. Varchenko proved that this determinant has a beautiful factorization. It is, however, not possible to use this factorization to compute a Varchenko determinant from a certain level of complexity. Precisely at this point, we provide an explicit formula of this determinant for the hyperplane arrangements associated to the finite Coxeter groups. The intersections of hyperplanes with the chambers of such arrangements have nice properties which play a central role for the calculation of their relating determinants.

Cayley Digraphs of Matrix Rings over Finite Fields
We use the \emph{unit-graphs} and the \emph{special unit-digraphs} on matrix rings to show that every $n \times n$ nonzero matrix over $\Bbb F_q$ can be written as a sum of two $\operatorname{SL}_n$-matrices when $n>1$. We compute the eigenvalues of these graphs in terms of Kloosterman sums and study their spectral properties; and prove that if $X$ is a subset of $\operatorname{Mat}_2 (\Bbb F_q)$ with size $|X| > \frac{2 q^3 \sqrt{q}}{q - 1}$, then $X$ contains at least two distinct matrices whose difference has determinant $α$ for any $α\in \Bbb F_q^{\ast}$. Using this result we also prove a sum-product type result: if $A,B,C,D \subseteq \Bbb F_q$ satisfy $\sqrt[4]{|A||B||C||D|}= Ω(q^{0.75})$ as $q \rightarrow \infty$, then $(A - B)(C - D)$ equals all of $\Bbb F_q$. In particular, if $A$ is a subset of $\Bbb F_q$ with cardinality $|A| > \frac{3} {2} q^{\frac{3}{4}}$, then the subset $(A - A) (A - A)$ equals all of $\Bbb F_q$. We also recover a classical result: every element in any finite ring of odd order can be written as the sum of two units.

Factorial characters of classical Lie groups and their combinatorial realisations
Just as the definition of factorial Schur functions as a ratio of determinants allows one to show that they satisfy a Jacobi-Trudi-type identity and have an explicit combinatorial realisation in terms of semistandard tableaux, so we offer here definitions of factorial irreducible characters of the classical Lie groups as ratios of determinants that share these two features. These factorial characters are each specified by a partition, $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,\ldots,λ_n)$, and in each case a flagged Jacobi-Trudi identity is derived that expresses the factorial character as a determinant of corresponding factorial characters specified by one-part partitions, $(m)$, for which we supply generating functions. These identities are established by manipulating determinants through the use of certain recurrence relations derived from these generating functions. The transitions to combinatorial realisations of the factorial characters in terms of tableaux are then established by means of non-intersecting lattice path models. The results apply to $gl(n)$, $so(2n+1)$, $sp(2n)$ and $o(2n)$, and are extended to the case of $so(2n)$ by making use of newly defined factorial difference characters.
Oriented Hypergraphic Matrix-tree Type Theorems and Bidirected Minors via Boolean Order Ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Restrictions of incidence-preserving path maps produce an oriented hypergraphic All Minors Matrix-tree Theorems for Laplacian and adjacency matrices. The images of these maps produce a locally signed graphic, incidence generalization, of cycle covers and basic figures that correspond to incidence-k-forests. When restricted to bidirected graphs the natural partial ordering of maps results in disjoint signed boolean lattices whose minor calculations correspond to principal order ideals. As an application, (1) the determinant formula of a signed graphic Laplacian is reclaimed and shown to be determined by the maximal positive-circle-free elements, and (2) spanning trees are equivalent to single-element order ideals.

Variations on Baur--Marsh's determinant
Baur and Marsh computed the determinant of a matrix assembled from the cluster variables in a cluster algebra of type A. In this article we wish to describe two variations. On the one hand, we compute determinants of matrices assembled from the squares of the cluster variables in Baur--Marsh's matrix. One such determinant admits an interpretation as a Cayley--Menger determinant. On the other hand, we wish to present a formula for the determinant of a matrix of cluster variables in a cluster algebra of type D. This cluster algebra is associated with a marked oriented surface. As in Baur--Marsh's setup the matrix is indexed by the marked points of the surface and an entry is given by the cluster variable corresponding to an arc between two marked points. Our formula asserts that the determinant may again be written as a product of cluster variables.
A Curious Family of Binomial Determinants That Count Rhombus Tilings of a Holey Hexagon
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, vol. 166, pp. 352-381, 2019 • View PublicationBIB
We evaluate a curious determinant, first mentioned by George Andrews in 1980 in the context of descending plane partitions. Our strategy is to combine the famous Desnanot-Jacobi-Dodgson identity with automated proof techniques. More precisely, we follow the holonomic ansatz that was proposed by Doron Zeilberger in 2007. We derive a compact and nice formula for Andrews's determinant, and use it to solve a challenge problem that we posed in a previous paper. By noting that Andrews's determinant is a special case of a two-parameter family of determinants, we find closed forms for several one-parameter subfamilies. The interest in these determinants arises because they count cyclically symmetric rhombus tilings of a hexagon with several triangular holes inside.

One-skeleta of $G$-parking function ideals: resolutions and standard monomials
Given a graph $G$, the $G$-parking function ideal $M_G$ is an artinian monomial ideal in the polynomial ring $S$ with the property that a linear basis for $S/M_G$ is provided by the set of $G$-parking functions. It follows that the dimension of $S/M_G$ is given by the number of spanning trees of $G$, which by the Matrix Tree Theorem is equal to the determinant of the reduced Laplacian of $G$. The ideals $M_G$ and related algebras were introduced by Postnikov and Shapiro where they studied their Hilbert functions and homological properties. The author and Sanyal showed that a minimal resolution of $M_G$ can be constructed from the graphical hyperplane arrangement associated to $G$, providing a combinatorial interpretation of the Betti numbers. Motivated by constructions in the theory of chip-firing on graphs, we study certain `skeleton' ideals $M_G^{(k)} \subset M_G$ generated by subsets of vertices of $G$ of size at most $k+1$. Here we focus our attention on the case $k=1$, the $1$-skeleton of the $G$-parking functions ideals. We consider standard monomials of $M_G^{(1)}$ and provide a combinatorial interpretation for the dimension of $S/M_G^{(1)}$ in terms of the signless Laplacian for the case $G = K_{n+1}$ is the complete graph. Our main study concerns homological properties of these ideals. We study resolutions of $M_G^{(1)}$ and show that for a certain class of graphs minimal resolution is supported on decompositions of Euclidean space coming from the theory of tropical hyperplane arrangements. This leads to combinatorial interpretations of the Betti numbers of these ideals.
