In this paper, we prove determinant formulas for the $K$-theory classes of the structure sheaves of degeneracy loci classes associated to vexillary permutations in type $A$. As a consequence we obtain determinant formulas for Lascoux-Schützenberger's double Grothendieck polynomials associated to vexillary permutations. Furthermore, we generalize the determinant formula to algebraic cobordism.
On Fredholm determinants in topology
Given an abstract simplicial complex G, the connection graph G' of G has as vertex set the faces of the complex and connects two if they intersect. If A is the adjacency matrix of that connection graph, we prove that the Fredholm characteristic det(1+A) takes values in {-1,1} and is equal to the Fermi characteristic, which is the product of the w(x), where w(x)=(-1)^dim(x). The Fredholm characteristic is a special value of the Bowen-Lanford zeta function and has various combinatorial interpretations. The unimodularity theorem proven here shows that it is a cousin of the Euler characteristic as the later is the sum of the w(x). Unimodularity implies that the matrix 1+A has an inverse which takes integer values. Experiments suggest the conjecture that the range of the Green function values, the union of the entries of the inverse of 1+A form a combinatorial invariant of the simplicial complex and do not change under Barycentric or edge refinements.

Spectrahedrality of hyperbolicity cones of multivariate matching polynomials

The generalized Lax conjecture asserts that each hyperbolicity cone is a linear slice of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices. We prove the conjecture for a multivariate generalization of the matching polynomial. This is further extended (albeit in a weaker sense) to a multivariate version of the independence polynomial for simplicial graphs. As an application we give a new proof of the conjecture for elementary symmetric polynomials (originally due to Brändén). Finally we consider a hyperbolic convolution of determinant polynomials generalizing an identity of Godsil and Gutman.
Extreme diagonally and antidiagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices of odd order

For each $α\in \{0,1,-1 \}$, we count diagonally and antidiagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices (DASASMs) of fixed odd order with a maximal number of $α$'s along the diagonal and the antidiagonal, as well as DASASMs of fixed odd order with a minimal number of $0$'s along the diagonal and the antidiagonal. In these enumerations, we encounter product formulas that have previously appeared in plane partition or alternating sign matrix counting, namely for the number of all alternating sign matrices, the number of cyclically symmetric plane partitions in a given box, and the number of vertically and horizontally symmetric ASMs. We also prove several refinements. For instance, in the case of DASASMs with a maximal number of $-1$'s along the diagonal and the antidiagonal, these considerations lead naturally to the definition of alternating sign triangles. These are new objects that are equinumerous with ASMs, and we are able to prove a two parameter refinement of this fact, involving the number of $-1$'s and the inversion number on the ASM side. To prove our results, we extend techniques to deal with triangular six-vertex configurations that have recently successfully been applied to settle Robbins' conjecture on the number of all DASASMs of odd order. Importantly, we use a general solution of the reflection equation to prove the symmetry of the partition function in the spectral parameters. In all of our cases, we derive determinant or Pfaffian formulas for the partition functions, which we then specialize in order to obtain the product formulas for the various classes of extreme odd DASASMs under consideration.

In this paper, we work toward answering the following question: given a uniformly random algebra homomorphism from the ring of symmetric functions over the integers to a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, what is the probability that the Schur function $s_λ$ maps to zero? We show that this probability is always at least $1/q$ and is asymptotically $1/q$. Moreover, we give a complete classification of all shapes that can achieve probability $1/q$. In addition, we identify certain families of shapes where the corresponding Schur functions being sent to zero are independent events, and we look into the probability that a Schur functions is mapped to nonzero values in $\mathbb{F}_q$.

We consider an inverse problem for Schrödinger operators on connected equilateral graphs with standard matching conditions. We calculate the spectral determinant and prove that the asymptotic distribution of a subset of its zeros can be described by the roots of a polynomial. We verify that one of the roots is equal to the mean value of the potential and apply it to prove an Ambarzumian type result, i.e., if a specific part of the spectrum is the same as in the case of zero potential, then the potential has to be zero.

In this paper we confirm several conjectures of Z.-W. Sun on Hankel-type determinants for some combinatorial sequences including Franel numbers, Domb numbers and Apéry numbers. For any nonnegative integer $n$, define \begin{gather*}f_n:=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^3,\ D_n:=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^2\binom{2k}k\binom{2(n-k)}{n-k}, b_n:=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^2\binom{n+k}k,\ A_n:=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^2\binom{n+k}k^2. \end{gather*} For $n=0,1,2,\ldots$, we show that $6^{-n}|f_{i+j}|_{0\leq i,j\leq n}$ and $12^{-n}|D_{i+j}|_{0\le i,j\le n}$ are positive odd integers, and $10^{-n}|b_{i+j}|_{0\leq i,j\leq n}$ and $24^{-n}|A_{i+j}|_{0\leq i,j\leq n}$ are always integers.
On a conjecture involving Laplacian eigenvalues of trees

Motivated by classic tree algorithms, in 1995 we designed a bottom-up $O(n)$ algorithm to compute the determinant of a tree's adjacency matrix $A$. In 2010 an $O(n)$ algorithm was found for constructing a diagonal matrix congruent to $A + xI_n$, $x \in \mathbb{R}$, enabling one to easily count the number of eigenvalues in any interval. A variation of the algorithm allows Laplacian eigenvalues in trees to be counted. We conjecture that for any tree $T$ of order $n \geq 2$, at least half of its Laplacian eigenvalues are less than $\bar{d} = 2 - \frac{2}{n}$, its average vertex degree.
Mixed Determinants and the Kadison-Singer problem

We adapt the arguments of Marcus, Spielman and Srivastava in their proof of the Kadison-Singer problem to prove improved paving estimates. Working with Anderson's paving formulation of Kadison-Singer instead of Weaver's vector balancing version, we show that the machinery of interlacing polyomials due to Marcus, Spielman and Srivastava works in this setting as well. The relevant expected characteristic polynomials turn out to be related to the so called "mixed determinants" that have been carefully studied by Borcea and Branden. This technique allows us to show that any projection with diagonal entries strictly less than $\frac{1}{4}$ can be two paved, matching recent results of Bownik, Casazza, Marcus and Speegle, though our estimates are asymptotically weaker. We also show that any projection with diagonal entries at most $\frac{1}{2}$ can be four paved, yielding improvements over currently known estimates. We also relate the problem of finding optimal paving estimates to bounding the root intervals of a natural one parameter deformation of the characteristic polynomial of a matrix that turns out to have some remarkable combinatorial properties.
The mechanical modes of a $2$-periodic triangulated surface
A recent "hidden symmetry" conjecture of B. Gin-ge Chen et al is resolved, concerning the dimension of the mechanical modes of a generic $2$-periodic triangulated surface $O$ in $R^3$ whose structure graph corresponds to a triangular tiling of $R^2$. We introduce an indexing of the terms in an associated sparse determinant $p_O(z_1, z_2)$ by means of oriented $3$-colourings of the underlying sparse graph, and use this and vertex splitting arguments to show that $p_O(z_1,z_2)$ is palindromic or antipalindromic, up to a shift index. This implies the conjectured dimension $1$ phenomenon for these surfaces. As a corollary we obtain the topological stability of the generic modes of a $1$-periodic triangulated nanotube.
Relationship between the Reprogramming Determinants of Boolean Networks and their Interaction Graph

In this paper, we address the formal characterization of targets triggering cellular trans-differentiation in the scope of Boolean networks with asynchronous dynamics. Given two fixed points of a Boolean network, we are interested in all the combinations of mutations which allow to switch from one fixed point to the other, either possibly, or inevitably. In the case of existential reachability, we prove that the set of nodes to (permanently) flip are only and necessarily in certain connected components of the interaction graph. In the case of inevitable reachability, we provide an algorithm to identify a subset of possible solutions.

Every graph G can be embedded in a Euclidean space as a two-distance set. The Euclidean representation number of G is the smallest dimension in which G is representable by such an embedding. We consider spherical and J-spherical representation numbers of G and give exact formulas for these numbers using multiplicities of polynomials that are defined by the Caley-Menger determinant. One of the main results of the paper are explicit formulas for the representation numbers of the join of graphs which are obtained from W. Kuperberg's type theorem for two-distance sets.

The monopole-dimer model introduced recently is an exactly-solvable signed generalisation of the dimer model. We show that the partition function of the monopole-dimer model on a graph invariant under a fixed-point free involution is a perfect square. We give a combinatorial interpretation of the square-root of the partition function for such graphs in terms of a monopole-dimer model on a new kind of graph with two types of edges which we call a dicot. The partition function of the latter can be written as a determinant, this time of a complex adjacency matrix. This formulation generalises T. T. Wu's assignment of imaginary orientation for the grid graph to planar dicots. As an application, we compute the partition function for a family of non-planar dicots with positive weights.

We introduce and study several combinatorial properties of a class of symmetric polynomials from the point of view of integrable vertex models in finite lattice. We introduce the $L$-operator related with the $U_q(sl_2)$ $R$-matrix, and construct the wavefunctions and their duals. We prove the exact correspondence between the wavefunctions and symmetric polynomials which is a quantum group deformation of the Grothendieck polynomials. This is proved by combining the matrix product method and an analysis on the domain wall boundary partition functions. As applications of the correspondence between the wavefunctions and symmetric polynomials, we derive several properties of the symmetric polynomials such as the determinant pairing formulas and the branching formulas by analyzing the domain wall boundary partition functions and the matrix elements of the $B$-operators.

We prove an asymptotic formula for the determinant of the bundle Laplacian on discrete $d$-dimensional tori as the number of vertices tends to infinity. This determinant has a combinatorial interpretation in terms of cycle-rooted spanning forests. We also establish a relation (in the limit) between the spectral zeta function of a line bundle over a discrete torus, the spectral zeta function of the infinite graph $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and the Epstein-Hurwitz zeta function. The latter can be viewed as the spectral zeta function of the twisted continuous torus which is the limit of the sequence of discrete tori.

In this paper we describe the thickened strips and the outside nested decompositions of any skew shape $λ/μ$. For any such decomposition $Φ=(Θ_1,Θ_2,\ldots,Θ_g)$ of the skew shape $λ/μ$ where $Θ_i$ is a thickened strip for every $i$, if $r$ is the number of boxes that are contained in any two distinct thickened strips of $Φ$, we establish a determinantal formula of the function $s_{λ/μ}(X)p_{1^r}(X)$ with the Schur functions of thickened strips as entries, where $s_{λ/μ}(X)$ is the Schur function of the skew shape $λ/μ$ and $p_{1^r}(X)$ is the power sum symmetric function index by the partition $(1^r)$. This generalizes Hamel and Goulden's theorem on the outside decompositions of the skew shape $λ/μ$. As an application of our theorem, we derive the number of $m$-strip tableaux which was first counted by Baryshnikov and Romik via extending the transfer operator approach due to Elkies.
