On Hamiltonians for six-vertex models
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we explain a connection between a family of free-fermionic six-vertex models and a discrete time evolution operator on one-dimensional Fermionic Fock space. The family of ice models generalize those with domain wall boundary, and we focus on two sets of Boltzmann weights whose partition functions were previously shown to generalize a generating function identity of Tokuyama. We produce associated Hamiltonians that recover these Boltzmann weights, and furthermore calculate the partition functions using commutation relations and elementary combinatorics. We give an expression for these partition functions as determinants, akin to the Jacobi-Trudi identity for Schur polynomials.

A simple bijection between permutation matrices and descending plane partitions without special parts
We present a simple bijection between permutation matrices and descending plane partitions without special parts. This bijection is already mentioned in work of P. Lalonde (without giving the details); it involves the inversion words of permutations and the (well-known) representation of descending plane partitions as families of non--intersecting lattice paths. (Taking a short detour, we will also exhibit how the (well--known) enumeration of descending plane partitions follows easily from the evaluation of Andrew's determinant.)
Representations of symmetric groups with non-trivial determinant
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 150 (2017) 208-232 • View PublicationBIB
We give a closed formula for the number of partitions $λ$ of $n$ such that the corresponding irreducible representation $V_λ$ of $S_n$ has non-trivial determinant. We determine how many of these partitions are self-conjugate and how many are hooks. This is achieved by characterizing the $2$-core towers of such partitions. We also obtain a formula for the number of partitions of $n$ such that the associated permutation representation of $S_n$ has non-trivial determinant.

On some properties of three different types of triangular blocked tensors
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define three types of upper (and lower) triangular blocked tensors, which are all generalizations of the triangular blocked matrices. We study some basic properties and characterizations of these three types of triangular blocked tensors. We obtain the formulas for the determinants, characteristic polynomials and spectra of the first and second type triangular blocked tensors, and give an example to show that these formulas no longer hold for the third type triangular blocked tensors. We prove that the product of any two $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper (or lower) triangular blocked tensors of the first or second or third type is still an $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper (or lower) triangular blocked tensor of the same type. We also prove that, if an $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked tensor of the first or second or third type has a left $k$-inverse, then its unique left $k$-inverse is still an $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked tensor of the same type. Also if it has a right $k$-inverse, then all of its right $k$-inverses are still $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked tensors of the same type. By showing that the left $k$-inverse (if any) of a weakly irreducible nonsingular $M$-tensor is a positive tensor, we show that the left $k$-inverse (if any) of a first or second or third type canonical $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked nonsingular $M$-tensor is an $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked tensor of the same type all of whose diagonal blocks are positive tensors. We also show that every order $m$ dimension $n$ tensor is permutation similar to some third type normal upper triangular blocked tensor (all of whose diagonal blocks are irreducible). We give an example to show that this is not true for the first type canonical upper triangular blocked tensor.
All $SL_2$-tilings come from infinite triangulations
Published in Advances in Mathematics 315 (2017), 194-245 • View PublicationBIB
An $SL_2$-tiling is a bi-infinite matrix of positive integers such that each adjacent 2 by 2 submatrix has determinant 1. Such tilings are infinite analogues of Conway-Coxeter friezes, and they have strong links to cluster algebras, combinatorics, mathematical physics, and representation theory. We show that, by means of so-called Conway-Coxeter counting, every $SL_2$-tiling arises from a triangulation of the disc with two, three or four accumulation points. This improves earlier results which only discovered $SL_2$-tilings with infinitely many entries equal to 1. Indeed, our methods show that there are large classes of tilings with only finitely many entries equal to 1, including a class of tilings with no 1's at all. In the latter case, we show that the minimal entry of a tiling is unique.

Elementary observations on Rogers-Szegö polynomials
The Rogers-Szegö polynomials are natural q-analogues of Newton binomials. In general they have no closed expression. We consider some exceptional cases which are products of a factor with a closed formula and another one with nice values for q=1 and q=-1. These are related to normalized Rogers-Szegö polynomials which have nice expansions and Hankel determinants. The Exposition of the paper is elementary and almost self-contained.

Comparing Graphs of Different Sizes
Published in Combin. Probab. Comput. 26, no. 5 (2017), 681--696 • View PublicationBIB
We consider two notions describing how one finite graph may be larger than another. Using them, we prove several theorems for such pairs that compare the number of spanning trees, the return probabilities of random walks, and the number of independent sets, among other combinatorial quantities. Our methods involve inequalities for determinants, for traces of functions of operators, and for entropy.

Spanning Trees and Mahler Measure
The complexity of a finite connected graph is its number of spanning trees; for a non-connected graph it is the product of complexities of its connected components. If $G$ is an infinite graph with cofinite free ${\mathbb Z}^d$-symmetry, then the logarithmic Mahler measure $m(Δ)$ of its Laplacian polynomial $Δ$ is the exponential growth rate of the complexity of finite quotients of $G$. It is bounded below by $m(Δ({\mathbb G}_d))$, where ${\mathbb G}_d$ is the grid graph of dimension $d$. The growth rates $m(Δ({\mathbb G}_d))$ are asymptotic to $\log 2d$ as $d$ tends to infinity. If $m(Δ(G))\ne 0$, then $m(Δ(G)) \ge \log 2$. An application to determinant growth rates of families of alternating links arising from planar graphs is given.

Orientations of Simplices Determined by Orderings on the Coordinates of their Vertices
Provided n points in an (n-1)-dimensional affine space, and one ordering of the points for each coordinate, we address the problem of testing whether these orderings determine if the points are the vertices of a simplex (i.e. are affinely independent), regardless of the real values of the coordinates. We also attempt to determine the orientation of this simplex. In other words, given a matrix whose columns correspond to affine points, we want to know when the sign (or the non-nullity) of its determinant is implied by orderings given to each row for the values of the row. We completely solve the problem in dimensions 2 and 3. We provide a direct combinatorial characterization, along with a formal calculus method. It can also be viewed as a decision algorithm, and is based on testing the existence of a suitable inductive cofactor expansion of the determinant. We conjecture that our method generalizes in higher dimensions. This work aims to be part of a study on how oriented matroids encode shapes of 3-dimensional landmark-based objects. Specifically, applications include the analysis of anatomical data for physical anthropology and clinical research.

The quaternionic second weighted zeta function of a graph and the Study determinant
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish a generalization of the second weighted zeta function of a graph to the case of quaternions. For an arc-weighted graph whose weights are quaternions, we define the second weighted zeta function by using the Study determinant that is a quaternionic determinant for quaternionic matrices defined by Study. This definition is regarded as a quaternionic analogue of the determinant expression of Hashimoto type for the Ihara zeta function of a graph. We derive the Study determinant expression of Bass type and the Euler product for the quaternionic second weighted zeta function.

Symmetric and skew-symmetric $\{0,\pm 1\}$-matrices with large determinants

We show that the existence of $\{\pm 1\}$-matrices having largest possible determinant is equivalent to the existence of certain tournament matrices. In particular, we prove a recent conjecture of Armario. We also show that large submatrices of conference matrices are determined by their spectrum.

On the irrationality of generalized $q$-logarithm
Published in Research in Number Theory 2 (2016) Art. 15 • View PublicationBIB
For integer $p$, $|p|>1$, and generic rational $x$ and $z$, we establish the irrationality of the series $$\ell_p(x,z)=x\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{z^n}{p^n-x}.$$ It is a symmetric ($\ell_p(x,z)=\ell_p(z,x)$) generalization of the $q$-logarithmic function ($x=1$ and $p=1/q$ where $|q|<1$), which in turn generalizes the $q$-harmonic series ($x=z=1$). Our proof makes use of the Hankel determinants built on the Padé approximations to $\ell_p(x,z)$.

Symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices in the nineteen-vertex model
Published • View PublicationBIB
The nineteen-vertex model on a periodic lattice with an anti-diagonal twist is investigated. Its inhomogeneous transfer matrix is shown to have a simple eigenvalue, with the corresponding eigenstate displaying intriguing combinatorial features. Similar results were previously found for the same model with a diagonal twist. The eigenstate for the anti-diagonal twist is explicitly constructed using the quantum separation of variables technique. A number of sum rules and special components are computed and expressed in terms of Kuperberg's determinants for partition functions of the inhomogeneous six-vertex model. The computations of some components of the special eigenstate for the diagonal twist are also presented. In the homogeneous limit, the special eigenstates become eigenvectors of the Hamiltonians of the integrable spin-one XXZ chain with twisted boundary conditions. Their sum rules and special components for both twists are expressed in terms of generating functions arising in the weighted enumeration of various symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices (ASMs). These include half-turn symmetric ASMs, quarter-turn symmetric ASMs, vertically symmetric ASMs, vertically and horizontally perverse ASMs and double U-turn ASMs. As side results, new determinant and pfaffian formulas for the weighted enumeration of various symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices are obtained.

Limiting eigenvalue distribution of random matrices of Ihara zeta function of long-range percolation graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the ensemble of $N\times N$ real random symmetric matrices $H_N^{(R)}$ obtained from the determinant form of the Ihara zeta function associated to random graphs $Γ_N^{(R)}$ of the long-range percolation radius model with the edge probability determined by a function $φ(t)$. We show that the normalized eigenvalue counting function of $H_N^{( R)}$ weakly converges in average as $N,R\to\infty$, $R=o(N)$ to a unique measure that depends on the limiting average vertex degree of $Γ_N^{(R)}$ given by $φ_1 = \int φ(t) dt$. This measure converges in the limit of infinite $φ_1$ to a shift of the Wigner semi-circle distribution. We discuss relations of these results with the properties of the Ihara zeta function and weak versions of the graph theory Riemann Hypothesis.
Determinants Containing Powers of Generalized Fibonacci Numbers
We study determinants of matrices whose entries are powers of Fibonacci numbers. We then extend the results to include entries that are powers of generalized Fibonacci numbers defined as a second-order linear recurrence relation. These studies have led us to discover a fundamental identity of determinant involving powers of linear polynomials. Finally, we discuss the determinants of matrices whose entries are products of the generalized Fibonacci numbers.

Hankel Matrices for the Period-Doubling Sequence

We give an explicit evaluation, in terms of products of Jacobsthal numbers, of the Hankel determinants of order a power of two for the period-doubling sequence. We also explicitly give the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the corresponding Hankel matrices. Similar considerations give the Hankel determinants for other orders.

Diagonal Form of the Varchenko Matrices
Published in Gao, Y. & Zhang, Y. J Algebr Comb (2018). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10801-018-0813-7 • View PublicationBIB
Varchenko defined the Varchenko matrix associated to any real hyperplane arrangement and computed its determinant. In this paper, we show that the Varchenko matrix of a hyperplane arrangement has a diagonal form if and only if it is semigeneral, i.e., without degeneracy. In the case of semigeneral arrangement, we present an explicit computation of the diagonal form via combinatorial arguments and matrix operations, thus giving a combinatorial interpretation of the diagonal entries.

Counting covering cycles
We compute the number of equivalence classes of nonperiodic covering cycles of given length in a non oriented connected graph. A covering cycle is a closed path that traverses each edge of the graph at least once. A special case is the number of Euler cycles in the non oriented graph. An identity relating the numbers of covering cycles of any length in a graph to a product of determinants is obtained.

Normalized incomplete beta function: log-concavity in parameters and other properties
Published • View PublicationBIB
The normalized incomplete beta function can be defined either as cumulative distribution function of beta density or as the Gauss hypergeometric function with one of the upper parameters equal to unity. Logarithmic concavity/convexity of this function in parameters was established by Finner and Roters in 1997. Their proof is indirect and rather difficult; it is based on generalized reproductive property of certain more general distributions. These authors remark that these results "seems to be very hard to obtain by usual analytic methods". In the first part of this paper we provide such proof based on standard tools of analysis. In the second part we go one step further and investigate the sign of generalized Turán determinants formed by shifts of the normalized incomplete beta function. Under some additional restrictions we demonstrate that these coefficients are of the same sign. We further conjecture that such restrictions can be removed without altering the results. Our method of proof also leads to various companion results which may be of independent interest. In particular, we establish linearization formulas and two-sided bounds for the above mentioned Turán determinants. Further, we find two combinatorial style identities for finite sums which we believe to be new.

A Terrible Expansion of the Determinant
From a transfer formula in multivariate finite operator calculus, comes an expansion for the determinant similar to Ryser's formula for the permanent. Although this one contains many more terms than the usual determinant formula. To prove it, we consider the poset of ordered partitions, properties of the permutahedron, and some good old fashioned combinatorial techniques.
