Rotundus: triangulations, Chebyshev polynomials, and Pfaffians
Published in Math. Intelligencer 40 (2018), no. 3, 45-50 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study a cyclically invariant polynomial which is an analog of the classical tridiagonal determinant usually called the continuant. We prove that this polynomial can be calculated as the Pfaffian of a skew-symmetric matrix. We consider the corresponding Diophantine equation and prove an analog of a famous result due to Conway and Coxeter. We also observe that Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind arise as Pfaffians.

A characterization of $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs using the intersection numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a primitive distance-regular graph $Γ$ with diameter at least $3$. We use the intersection numbers of $Γ$ to find a positive semidefinite matrix $G$ with integer entries. We show that $G$ has determinant zero if and only if $Γ$ is $Q$-polynomial.

A combinatorial proof of Bass's determinant formula for the zeta function of regular graphs
We give an elementary combinatorial proof of Bass's determinant formula for the zeta function of a finite regular graph. This is done by expressing the number of non-backtracking cycles of a given length in terms of Chebychev polynomials in the eigenvalues of the adjacency operator of the graph.

A combinatorial proof of a formula of Biane and Chapuy
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics. 25 (2018) P1.58 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple strongly connected weighted directed graph. Let $\mathcal{G}$ denote the spanning tree graph of $G$. That is, the vertices of $\mathcal{G}$ consist of the directed rooted spanning trees on $G$, and the edges of $\mathcal{G}$ consist of pairs of trees $(t_i, t_j)$ such that $t_j$ can be obtained from $t_i$ by adding the edge from the root of $t_i$ to the root of $t_j$ and deleting the outgoing edge from the root of $t_j$. A formula for the ratio of the sum of the weights of the directed rooted spanning trees on $\mathcal{G}$ to the sum of the weights of the directed rooted spanning trees on $G$ was recently given by Biane and Chapuy. We provide an alternative proof of this formula, which is both simple and combinatorial. The proof involves working with the stochastic zeta function of an irreducible Markov chain. By generalizing the stochastic zeta function we also recover the general result of Biane and Chapuy which gives a formula for the determinant of the Schrödinger matrix on $\mathcal{G}$ corresponding to a given Schrödinger matrix on $G$, in terms of the minors of the latter matrix.

On a Dehn-Sommerville functional for simplicial complexes
Assume G is a finite abstract simplicial complex with f-vector (v0,v1, ...), and generating function f(x) = sum(k=1 v(k-1) x^k = v0 x + v1 x^2+ v2 x^3 + ..., the Euler characteristic of G can be written as chi(G)=f(0)-f(-1). We study here the functional f1'(0)-f1'(-1), where f1' is the derivative of the generating function f1 of G1. The Barycentric refinement G1 of G is the Whitney complex of the finite simple graph for which the faces of G are the vertices and where two faces are connected if one is a subset of the other. Let L is the connection Laplacian of G, which is L=1+A, where A is the adjacency matrix of the connection graph G', which has the same vertex set than G1 but where two faces are connected they intersect. We have f1'(0)=tr(L) and for the Green function g L^(-1) also f1'(-1)=tr(g) so that eta1(G) = f1'(0)-f1'(-1) is equal to eta(G)=tr(L-L^(-1). The established formula tr(g)=f1'(-1) for the generating function of G1 complements the determinant expression det(L)=det(g)=zeta(-1) for the Bowen-Lanford zeta function zeta(z)=1/det(1-z A) of the connection graph G' of G. We also establish a Gauss-Bonnet formula eta1(G) = sum(x in V(G1) chi(S(x)), where S(x) is the unit sphere of x the graph generated by all vertices in G1 directly connected to x. Finally, we point out that the functional eta0(G) = sum(x in V(G) chi(S(x)) on graphs takes arbitrary small and arbitrary large values on every homotopy type of graphs.
Two characteristic polynomials corresponding to graphical networks over min-plus algebra
In this paper, we investigate characteristic polynomials of matrices in min-plus algebra. Eigenvalues of min-plus matrices are known to be the minimum roots of the characteristic polynomials based on tropical determinants which are designed from emulating standard determinants. Moreover, minimum roots of characteristic polynomials have a close relationship to graphs associated with min-plus matrices consisting of vertices and directed edges with weights. The literature has yet to focus on the other roots of min-plus characteristic polynomials. Thus, here we consider how to relate the 2nd, 3rd,... minimum roots of min-plus characteristic polynomials to graphical features. We then define new characteristic polynomials of min-plus matrices by considering an analogue of the Faddeev-LeVerrier algorithm that generates the characteristic polynomials of linear matrices. We conclusively show that minimum roots of the proposed characteristic polynomials coincide with min-plus eigenvalues, and observe the other roots as in the study of the already known characteristic polynomials. We also give an example to illustrate the difference between the already known and proposed characteristic polynomials.

Shifted tableaux and products of Schur's symmetric functions
We introduce a new combinatorial object, semistandard increasing decomposition tableau and study its relation to a semistandard decomposition tableau introduced by Kraśkiewicz and developed by Lam and Serrano. We also introduce generalized Littlewood--Richardson coefficients for products of Schur's symmetric functions and give combinatorial descriptions in terms of tableau words. The insertion algorithms play central roles for proofs. A new description of shifted Littlewood--Richardson coefficients is given in terms of semistandard increasing decomposition tableaux. We show that a "big" Schur function is expressed as a sum of products of two Schur $P$-functions, and vice versa. As an application, we derive two Giambelli formulae for big Schur functions: one is a determinant and the other is a Pfaffian.
On Schur multiple zeta functions: A combinatoric generalization of multiple zeta functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce Schur multiple zeta functions which interpolate both the multiple zeta and multiple zeta-star functions of the Euler-Zagier type combinatorially. We first study their basic properties including a region of absolute convergence and the case where all variables are the same. Then, under an assumption on variables, some determinant formulas coming from theory of Schur functions such as the Jacobi-Trudi, Giambelli and dual Cauchy formula are established with the help of Macdonald's ninth variation of Schur functions. Moreover, we investigate the quasi-symmetric functions corresponding to the Schur multiple zeta functions. We obtain the similar results as above for them and, furthermore, describe the images of them by the antipode of the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions explicitly. Finally, we establish iterated integral representations of the Schur multiple zeta values of ribbon type, which yield a duality for them in some cases.

Classification of empty lattice $4$-simplices of width larger than two
Published in Transactions Amer. Math. Soc., 371:9 (May 2019), 6605-6625 • View PublicationBIB
A lattice $d$-simplex is the convex hull of $d+1$ affinely independent integer points in ${\mathbb R}^d$. It is called empty if it contains no lattice point apart of its $d+1$ vertices. The classification of empty $3$-simplices is known since 1964 (White), based on the fact that they all have width one. But for dimension $4$ no complete classification is known. Haase and Ziegler (2000) enumerated all empty $4$-simplices up to determinant 1000 and based on their results conjectured that after determinant $179$ all empty $4$-simplices have width one or two. We prove this conjecture as follows: - We show that no empty $4$-simplex of width three or more can have determinant greater than 5058, by combining the recent classification of hollow 3-polytopes (Averkov, Krümpelmann and Weltge, 2017) with general methods from the geometry of numbers. - We continue the computations of Haase and Ziegler up to determinant 7600, and find that no new $4$-simplices of width larger than two arise. In particular, we give the whole list of empty $4$-simplices of width larger than two, which is as computed by Haase and Ziegler: There is a single empty $4$-simplex of width four (of determinant 101), and 178 empty $4$-simplices of width three, with determinants ranging from 41 to 179.
A Characterization of Oriented Hypergraphic Laplacian and Adjacency Matrix Coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
An oriented hypergraph is an oriented incidence structure that generalizes and unifies graph and hypergraph theoretic results by examining its locally signed graphic substructure. In this paper we obtain a combinatorial characterization of the coefficients of the characteristic polynomials of oriented hypergraphic Laplacian and adjacency matrices via a signed hypergraphic generalization of basic figures of graphs. Additionally, we provide bounds on the determinant and permanent of the Laplacian matrix, characterize the oriented hypergraphs in which the upper bound is sharp, and demonstrate that the lower bound is never achieved.

We evaluate determinants of "spiral" matrices, which are matrices in which entries are spiralling from the centre of the matrices towards the outside, with prescribed increments from one entry to the next depending on whether one moves right, up, left, or down along the spiral.

Generalized Sylvester Formulas and skew Giambelli Identities
We obtain a common generalization of two types of Sylvester formulas for compound determinants and its Pfaffian analogue. As applications, we give generalizations of the Giambelli identity to skew Schur functions and the Schur identity to Schur's skew $Q$-functions.

Some Schubert shenanigans
We give a conjectured evaluation of the determinant of a certain matrix $\tilde{D}(n,k)$. The entries of $\tilde{D}(n,k)$ are either 0 or specializations $\mathfrak{S}_w(1,\dots,1)$ of Schubert polynomials. The conjecture implies that the weak order of the symmetric group $S_n$ has the strong Sperner property. A number of peripheral results and problems are also discussed.

Moments of the Hermitian Matrix Jacobi process
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we compute the expectation of traces of powers of the hermitian matrix Jacobi process for a large enough but fixed size. To proceed, we first derive the semi-group density of its eigenvalues process as a bilinear series of symmetric Jacobi polynomials. Next, we use the expansion of power sums in the Schur polynomial basis and the integral Cauchy-Binet formula in order to determine the partitions having non zero contributions after integration. It turns out that these are hooks of bounded weight and the sought expectation results from the integral of a product of two Schur functions with respect to a generalized Beta distribution. For special values of the parameters on which the matrix Jacobi process depends, the last integral reduces to the Cauchy determinant and we close the paper with the investigation of the asymptotic behavior of the resulting formula as the matrix size tends to infinity.
The Smith normal form of a specialized Giambelli-type matrix
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the study of determinant formulas for Schur functions, Hamel and Goulden introduced a class of Giambelli-type matrices with respect to outside decompositions of partition diagrams, which unify the Jacobi-Trudi matrices, the Giambelli matrices and the Lascoux-Pragacz matrices. Stanley determined the Smith normal form of a specialized Jacobi-Trudi matrix. Motivated by Stanley's work, we obtain the Smith normal form of a specialized Giambelli matrix and a specialized Lascoux-Pragacz matrix. Furthermore, we show that, for a given partition, the Smith normal form of any specialized Giambelli-type matrix can be obtained from that of the corresponding specialization of the classical Giambelli matrix by a sequence of stabilization operations.

Under binary matrices we mean matrices whose entries take one of two values. In this paper, explicit formulae for calculating the determinant of some type of binary Toeplitz matrices are obtained. Examples of the application of the determinant of binary Toeplitz matrices for the enumeration of even and odd permutations of different types are given.

Graph complexity and Mahler measure
The (torsion) complexity of a finite edge-weighted graph is defined to be the order of the torsion subgroup of the abelian group presented by its Laplacian matrix. When G is d-periodic (i.e., G has a free action of the rank-d free abelian group by graph automorphisms, with finite quotient) the Mahler measure of its Laplacian determinant polynomial is the growth rate of the complexity of finite quotients of G. Lehmer's question, an open question about the roots of monic integral polynomials, is equivalent to a question about the complexity growth of edge-weighted 1-periodic graphs.

On distance matrices of graphs
Distance well-defined graphs consist of connected undirected graphs, strongly connected directed graphs and strongly connected mixed graphs. Let $G$ be a distance well-defined graph, and let ${\sf D}(G)$ be the distance matrix of $G$. Graham, Hoffman and Hosoya [3] showed a very attractive theorem, expressing the determinant of ${\sf D}(G)$ explicitly as a function of blocks of $G$. In this paper, we study the inverse of ${\sf D}(G)$ and get an analogous theory, expressing the inverse of ${\sf D}(G)$ through the inverses of distance matrices of blocks of $G$ (see Theorem 3.3) by the theory of Laplacian expressible matrices which was first defined by the first author [9]. A weighted cactoid digraph is a strongly connected directed graph whose blocks are weighted directed cycles. As an application of above theory, we give the determinant and the inverse of the distance matrix of a weighted cactoid digraph, which imply Graham and Pollak's formula and the inverse of the distance matrix of a tree.

Flagged Grothendieck polynomials

We show that the flagged Grothendieck polynomials defined as the generating functions of flagged set-valued tableaux of Knutson-Miller-Yong can be expressed by a Jacobi-Trudi type determinant formula generalizing the work of Hudson-Matsumura. We also introduce the flagged skew Grothendieck polynomials in these two expressions and show that they coincide.
