We obtain quantitative versions of the Balog-Szemeredi-Gowers and Freiman theorems in the model case of a finite field geometry F_2^n, improving the previously known bounds in such theorems. For instance, if A is a subset of F_2^n such that |A+A| <= K|A| (thus A has small additive doubling), we show that there exists an affine subspace V of F_2^n of cardinality |V| >> K^{-O(\sqrt{K})} |A| such that |A \cap V| >> |V|/2K. Under the assumption that A contains at least |A|^3/K quadruples with a_1 + a_2 + a_3 + a_4 = 0 we obtain a similar result, albeit with the slightly weaker condition |V| >> K^{-O(K)}|A|.

Let $F_q$ be a finite field of characteristic $p=2,3$. We give the number of irreducible polynomials $x^m+a_{m-1}x^{m-1}+...+a_0\in\F_q[x]$ with $a_{m-1}$ and $a_{m-3}$ prescribed for any given $m$ if $p=2$, and with $a_{m-1}$ and $a_1$ prescribed for $m=1,...,10$ if $p=2,3$.

Our main result is a sharp bound for the number of vertices in a minimal forbidden subgraph for the graphs having minimum rank at most 3 over the finite field of order 2. We also list all 62 such minimal forbidden subgraphs. We conclude by exploring how some of these results over the finite field of order 2 extend to arbitrary fields and demonstrate that at least one third of the 62 are minimal forbidden subgraphs over an arbitrary field for the class of graphs having minimum rank at most 3 in that field.
Subset sums in $\BZ_p$
Let $\BZ_p$ be the finite field of prime order $p$ and $A$ be a subset of $\BZ_p$. We prove several sharp results about the following two basic questions:
(1) When can one represent zero as a sum of distinct elements of $A$ ?
(2) When can one represent every element of $\BZ_p$ as a sum of distinct elements of $A$ ?

We prove, using combinatorics and Kloosterman sum technology that if $A \subset {\Bbb F}_q$, a finite field with $q$ elements, and $q^{1/2} \lesssim |A| \lesssim q^{7/10}$, then $\max \{|A+A|, |A \cdot A|\} \gtrsim \frac{{|A|}^{3/2}}{q^{1/4}$.
An incidence bound for $k$-planes in $F^n$ and a planar variant of the Kakeya maximal function
We discuss a planar variant of the Kakeya maximal function in the setting of a vector space over a finite field. Using methods from incidence combinatorics, we demonstrate that the operator is bounded from $L^p$ to $L^q$ when $1 \leq p \leq \frac{kn+k+1}{k(k+1)}$ and $1 \leq q \leq (n-k)p'$.

We examine certain maps from root systems to vector spaces over finite fields. By choosing appropriate bases, the images of these maps can turn out to have nice combinatorial properties, which reflect the structure of the underlying root system. The main examples are E_6 and E_7.

Under mild conditions on $n,p$, we give a lower bound on the number of $n$-variable balanced symmetric polynomials over finite fields $GF(p)$, where $p$ is a prime number. The existence of nonlinear balanced symmetric polynomials is an immediate corollary of this bound. Furthermore, we conjecture that $X(2^t,2^{t+1}l-1)$ are the only nonlinear balanced elementary symmetric polynomials over GF(2), where $X(d,n)=\sum_{i_1<i_2<...<i_d}x_{i_1} x_{i_2}... x_{i_d}$, and we prove various results in support of this conjecture.
Superregular Matrices and the Construction of Convolutional Codes having a Maximum Distance Profile
Superregular matrices are a class of lower triangular Toeplitz matrices that arise in the context of constructing convolutional codes having a maximum distance profile. These matrices are characterized by the property that no submatrix has a zero determinant unless it is trivially zero due to the lower triangular structure. In this paper, we discuss how superregular matrices may be used to construct codes having a maximum distance profile. We also introduce group actions that preserve the superregularity property and present an upper bound on the minimum size a finite field must have in order that a superregular matrix of a given size can exist over that field.

For an integer $n>2$, a rank-$n$ matroid is called an $n$-spike if it consists of $n$ three-point lines through a common point such that, for all $k\in\{1, 2, ..., n - 1\}$, the union of every set of $k$ of these lines has rank $k+1$. Spikes are very special and important in matroid theory. In 2003 Wu found the exact numbers of $n$-spikes over fields with 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 elements, and the asymptotic values for larger finite fields. In this paper, we prove that, for each prime number $p$, a $GF(p$) representable $n$-spike $M$ is only representable on fields with characteristic $p$ provided that $n \ge 2p-1$. Moreover, $M$ is uniquely representable over $GF(p)$.
Some colouring problems for unit-quadrance graphs
The quadrance between two points $A_1 = (x_1, y_1)$ and $A_2 = (x_2, y_2)$ is the number $Q (A_1, A_2) = (x_1 - x_2)^2 + (y_1 - y_2)^2$. Let $q$ be an odd prime power and $F_q$ be the finite field with $q$ elements. The unit-quadrance graph $D_q$ has the vertex set $F_q^2$, and $X, Y \in F_q^2$ are adjacent if and only if $Q (A_1, A_2) = 1$. In this paper, we study some colouring problems for the unit-quadrance graph $D_q$ and discuss some open problems.
A Hybrid of Darboux's Method and Singularity Analysis in Combinatorial Asymptotics

A ``hybrid method'', dedicated to asymptotic coefficient extraction in combinatorial generating functions, is presented, which combines Darboux's method and singularity analysis theory. This hybrid method applies to functions that remain of moderate growth near the unit circle and satisfy suitable smoothness assumptions--this, even in the case when the unit circle is a natural boundary. A prime application is to coefficients of several types of infinite product generating functions, for which full asymptotic expansions (involving periodic fluctuations at higher orders) can be derived. Examples relative to permutations, trees, and polynomials over finite fields are treated in this way.

In this expository article we collect the integer sequences that count several different types of matrices over finite fields and provide references to the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). Section 1 contains the sequences, their generating functions, and examples. Section 2 contains the proofs of the formulas for the coefficients and the generating functions of those sequences if the proofs are not easily available in the literature. The cycle index for matrices is an essential ingredient in most of the derivations.

The freeness of hyperplane arrangements in a three dimensional vector space over finite field is discussed. We prove that if the number of hyperplanes is greater than some bound, then the freeness is determined by the characteristic polynomial.

Given a prime $p\ge 5$, and given $1<κ<p-1$, we call a sequence $(a_n)_{n}$ in $\mathbb{F}_p$ a $Φ_κ$-sequence if it is periodic with period $p-1$, and if it satisfies the linear recurrence $a_n+a_{n+1}=a_{n+κ}$ with $a_0=1$. Such a sequence is said to be a complete $Φ_κ$-sequence if in addition $\{a_0,a_1,...,a_{p-2}\}=\{1,...,p-1\}$. For instance, every primitive root $b$ mod $p$ generates a complete $Φ_κ$-sequence $a_n=b^n$ for some (unique) $κ$. A natural question is whether every complete $Φ_κ$-sequence is necessarily defined by a primitive root. For $κ=2$ the answer is known to be positive. In this paper we reexamine that case and investigate the case $κ=3$ together with the associated cases $κ=p-2$ and $κ=p-3$.

Let $G$ be a group with socle a simple group of Lie type defined over the finite field with $q$ elements where $q$ is a power of the prime $p$. Suppose that $G$ acts transitively upon the lines of a linear space $\mathcal{S}$. We show that if $p$ is {\it significant} then $G$ acts flag-transitively on $\mathcal{S}$ and all examples are known.

When the standard representation of a crystallographic Coxeter group $Γ$ is reduced modulo an odd prime $p$, a finite representation in some orthogonal space over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ is obtained. If $Γ$ has a string diagram, the latter group will often be the automorphism group of a finite regular polytope. In Part I we described the basics of this construction and enumerated the polytopes associated with the groups of rank 3 and the groups of spherical or Euclidean type. In this paper, we investigate such families of polytopes for more general choices of $Γ$, including all groups of rank 4. In particular, we study in depth the interplay between their geometric properties and the algebraic structure of the corresponding finite orthogonal group.

The combinatorial theory of species developed by Joyal provides a foundation for enumerative combinatorics of objects constructed from finite sets. In this paper we develop an analogous theory for the enumerative combinatorics of objects constructed from vector spaces over finite fields. Examples of these objects include subspaces, flags of subspaces, direct sum decompositions, and linear maps or matrices of various types. The unifying concept is that of a q-species, defined to be a functor from the category of finite dimensional vector spaces over a finite field with to the category of finite sets.

Duadic codes are a class of cyclic codes that generalizes quadratic residue codes from prime to composite lengths. For every prime power q, we characterize the integers n such that over the finite field with q^2 elements there is a duadic code of length n having an Hermitian self-dual parity-check extension.
We derive using analytic number theory asymptotic estimates for the number of such n as well as for the number of lengths for which duadic codes exist.

A Fourier transform technique is introduced for counting the number of solutions of holomorphic moment map equations over a finite field. This in turn gives information on Betti numbers of holomorphic symplectic quotients. As a consequence simple unified proofs are obtained for formulas of Poincare polynomials of toric hyperkahler varieties, Poincare polynomials of Hilbert schemes of points and twisted ADHM spaces of instantons on C^2 and Poincare polynomials of all Nakajima quiver varieties. As an application, a proof of a conjecture of Kac on the number of absolutely indecomposable representations of a quiver is announced.
