In this article, we determine the maximum Wiener indices of unicyclic graphs with given number of vertices and matching number. We also characterize the extremal graphs. This solves an open problem of Du and Zhou.

Integer decomposition property for Cayley sums of order and stable set polytopes
Published in Michigan Mathematical Journal 69 (2020), 765--778 • View PublicationBIB
Lattice polytopes which possess the integer decomposition property (IDP for short) turn up in many fields of mathematics. It is known that if the Cayley sum of lattice polytopes possesses IDP, then so does their Minkowski sum. In this paper, the Cayley sum of the order polytope of a finite poset and the stable set polytope of a finite simple graph is studied. We show that the Cayley sum of an order polytope and the stable set polytope of a perfect graph possesses a regular unimodular triangulation and IDP, and hence so does their Minkowski sum. Moreover, it turns out that, for an order polytope and the stable set polytope of a graph, the following conditions are equivalent: (i) the Cayley sum is Gorenstein; (ii) the Minkowski sum is Gorenstein; (iii) the graph is perfect.

On the Local Geometry of Graphs in Terms of Their Spectra
Published in European J. Combin. 81 (2019) 378-393 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider the relation between the spectrum and the number of short cycles in large graphs. Suppose $G_1, G_2, G_3, \ldots$ is a sequence of finite and connected graphs that share a common universal cover $T$ and such that the proportion of eigenvalues of $G_n$ that lie within the support of the spectrum of $T$ tends to 1 in the large $n$ limit. This is a weak notion of being Ramanujan. We prove such a sequence of graphs is asymptotically locally tree-like. This is deduced by way of an analogous theorem proved for certain infinite sofic graphs and unimodular networks, which extends results for regular graphs and certain infinite Cayley graphs.

$(2P_2,K_4)$-Free Graphs are 4-Colorable
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we show that every $(2P_2,K_4)$-free graph is 4-colorable. The bound is attained by the five-wheel and the complement of the seven-cycle. This answers an open question by Wagon \cite{Wa80} in the 1980s. Our result can also be viewed as a result in the study of the Vizing bound for graph classes. A major open problem in the study of computational complexity of graph coloring is whether coloring can be solved in polynomial time for $(4P_1,C_4)$-free graphs. Lozin and Malyshev \cite{LM17} conjecture that the answer is yes. As an application of our main result, we provide the first positive evidence to the conjecture by giving a 2-approximation algorithm for coloring $(4P_1,C_4)$-free graphs.

Frameworks with coordinated edge motions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop a rigidity theory for bar-joint frameworks in Euclidean $d$-space in which specified classes of edges are allowed to change length in a coordinated fashion that requires differences of lengths to be preserved within each class. Rigidity for these coordinated frameworks is a generic property, and we characterize the rigid graphs in terms of redundant rigidity in the standard $d$-dimensional rigidity matroid. We also interpret our main results in terms of matroid unions.
The complexity of approximating the matching polynomial in the complex plane
We study the problem of approximating the value of the matching polynomial on graphs with edge parameter $γ$, where $γ$ takes arbitrary values in the complex plane. When $γ$ is a positive real, Jerrum and Sinclair showed that the problem admits an FPRAS on general graphs. For general complex values of $γ$, Patel and Regts, building on methods developed by Barvinok, showed that the problem admits an FPTAS on graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ as long as $γ$ is not a negative real number less than or equal to $-1/(4(Δ-1))$. Our first main result completes the picture for the approximability of the matching polynomial on bounded degree graphs. We show that for all $Δ\geq 3$ and all real $γ$ less than $-1/(4(Δ-1))$, the problem of approximating the value of the matching polynomial on graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ with edge parameter $γ$ is #P-hard. We then explore whether the maximum degree parameter can be replaced by the connective constant. Sinclair et al. showed that for positive real $γ$ it is possible to approximate the value of the matching polynomial using a correlation decay algorithm on graphs with bounded connective constant (and potentially unbounded maximum degree). We first show that this result does not extend in general in the complex plane; in particular, the problem is #P-hard on graphs with bounded connective constant for a dense set of $γ$ values on the negative real axis. Nevertheless, we show that the result does extend for any complex value $γ$ that does not lie on the negative real axis. Our analysis accounts for complex values of $γ$ using geodesic distances in the complex plane in the metric defined by an appropriate density function.
A tight Erdős-Pósa function for planar minors
Published in Advances in Combinatorics, 2019:2, 33 pp • View PublicationBIB
Let $H$ be a planar graph. By a classical result of Robertson and Seymour, there is a function $f:\mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{R}$ such that for all $k \in \mathbb{N}$ and all graphs $G$, either $G$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint subgraphs each containing $H$ as a minor, or there is a subset $X$ of at most $f(k)$ vertices such that $G-X$ has no $H$-minor. We prove that this remains true with $f(k) = c k \log k$ for some constant $c=c(H)$. This bound is best possible, up to the value of $c$, and improves upon a recent result of Chekuri and Chuzhoy [STOC 2013], who established this with $f(k) = c k \log^d k$ for some universal constant $d$. The proof is constructive and yields a polynomial-time $O(\log \mathsf{OPT})$-approximation algorithm for packing subgraphs containing an $H$-minor.

MAX for $k$-independence in multigraphs
For a fixed positive integer $k$, a set $S$ of vertices of a graph or multigraph is called a $k$-independent set if the subgraph induced by $S$ has maximum degree less than $k$. The well-known algorithm MAX finds a maximal $k$-independent set in a graph or multigraph by iteratively removing vertices of maximum degree until what remains has maximum degree less than $k$. We give an efficient procedure that determines, for a given degree sequence $D$, the smallest cardinality $b(D)$ of a $k$-independent set that can result from any application of MAX to any loopless multigraph with degree sequence $D$. This analysis of the worst case is sharp for each degree sequence $D$ in that there exists a multigraph $G$ with degree sequence $D$ such that some application of MAX to $G$ will result in a $k$-independent set of cardinality exactly $b(D)$.

On the extremal number of subdivisions
Published • View PublicationBIB
One of the cornerstones of extremal graph theory is a result of Füredi, later reproved and given due prominence by Alon, Krivelevich and Sudakov, saying that if $H$ is a bipartite graph with maximum degree $r$ on one side, then there is a constant $C$ such that every graph with $n$ vertices and $C n^{2 - 1/r}$ edges contains a copy of $H$. This result is tight up to the constant when $H$ contains a copy of $K_{r,s}$ with $s$ sufficiently large in terms of $r$. We conjecture that this is essentially the only situation in which Füredi's result can be tight and prove this conjecture for $r = 2$. More precisely, we show that if $H$ is a $C_4$-free bipartite graph with maximum degree $2$ on one side, then there are positive constants $C$ and $δ$ such that every graph with $n$ vertices and $C n^{3/2 - δ}$ edges contains a copy of $H$. This answers a question of Erdős from 1988. The proof relies on a novel variant of the dependent random choice technique which may be of independent interest.
Clumsy packings of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ and $H$ be graphs. We say that $P$ is an $H$-packing of $G$ if $P$ is a set of edge-disjoint copies of $H$ in $G$. An $H$-packing $P$ is maximal if there is no other $H$-packing of $G$ that properly contains $P$. Packings of maximum cardinality have been studied intensively, with several recent breakthrough results. Here, we consider minimum cardinality maximal packings. An $H$-packing $P$ is clumsy if it is maximal of minimum size. Let $cl(G,H)$ be the size of a clumsy $H$-packing of $G$. We provide nontrivial bounds for $cl(G,H)$, and in many cases asymptotically determine $cl(G,H)$ for some generic classes of graphs $G$ such as $K_n$ (the complete graph), $Q_n$ (the cube graph), as well as square, triangular, and hexagonal grids. We asymptotically determine $cl(K_n,H)$ for every fixed non-empty graph $H$. In particular, we prove that $$ cl(K_n, H) = \frac{\binom{n}{2}- ex(n,H)}{|E(H)|}+o(ex(n,H)),$$ where $ex(n,H)$ is the extremal number of $H$. A related natural parameter is $cov(G,H)$, that is the smallest number of copies of $H$ in $G$ (not necessarily edge-disjoint) whose removal from $G$ results in an $H$-free graph. While clearly $cov(G,H) \le cl(G,H)$, all of our lower bounds for $cl(G,H)$ apply to $cov(G,H)$ as well.
Extremal problems on ordered and convex geometric hypergraphs
An ordered hypergraph is a hypergraph whose vertex set is linearly ordered, and a convex geometric hypergraph is a hypergraph whose vertex set is cyclically ordered. Extremal problems for ordered and convex geometric graphs have a rich history with applications to a variety of problems in combinatorial geometry. In this paper, we consider analogous extremal problems for uniform hypergraphs, and discover a general partitioning phenomenon which allows us to determine the order of magnitude of the extremal function for various ordered and convex geometric hypergraphs. A special case is the ordered $n$-vertex $r$-graph $F$ consisting of two disjoint sets $e$ and $f$ whose vertices alternate in the ordering. We show that for all $n \geq 2r + 1$, the maximum number of edges in an ordered $n$-vertex $r$-graph not containing $F$ is exactly \[ {n \choose r} - {n - r \choose r}.\] This could be considered as an ordered version of the Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem, and generalizes earlier results of Capoyleas and Pach and Aronov-Dujmovič-Morin-Ooms-da Silveira.

Super edge-connectivity and matching preclusion of data center networks
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 21 no. 4, Graph Theory (July 30, 2019) dmtcs:4689 • View PublicationBIB
Edge-connectivity is a classic measure for reliability of a network in the presence of edge failures. $k$-restricted edge-connectivity is one of the refined indicators for fault tolerance of large networks. Matching preclusion and conditional matching preclusion are two important measures for the robustness of networks in edge fault scenario. In this paper, we show that the DCell network $D_{k,n}$ is super-$λ$ for $k\geq2$ and $n\geq2$, super-$λ_2$ for $k\geq3$ and $n\geq2$, or $k=2$ and $n=2$, and super-$λ_3$ for $k\geq4$ and $n\geq3$. Moreover, as an application of $k$-restricted edge-connectivity, we study the matching preclusion number and conditional matching preclusion number, and characterize the corresponding optimal solutions of $D_{k,n}$. In particular, we have shown that $D_{1,n}$ is isomorphic to the $(n,k)$-star graph $S_{n+1,2}$ for $n\geq2$.

On the Number of Circuits in Regular Matroids (with Connections to Lattices and Codes)
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that for any regular matroid on $m$ elements and any $α\geq 1$, the number of $α$-minimum circuits, or circuits whose size is at most an $α$-multiple of the minimum size of a circuit in the matroid is bounded by $m^{O(α^2)}$. This generalizes a result of Karger for the number of $α$-minimum cuts in a graph. As a consequence, we obtain similar bounds on the number of $α$-shortest vectors in "totally unimodular" lattices and on the number of $α$-minimum weight codewords in "regular" codes.

Anticoncentration for subgraph statistics

Consider integers $k,\ell$ such that $0\le \ell \le \binom{k}2$. Given a large graph $G$, what is the fraction of $k$-vertex subsets of $G$ which span exactly $\ell$ edges? When $G$ is empty or complete, and $\ell$ is zero or $\binom{k}{2}$, this fraction can be exactly 1. On the other hand, if $\ell$ is far from these extreme values, one might expect that this fraction is substantially smaller than 1. This was recently proved by Alon, Hefetz, Krivelevich and Tyomkyn who intiated the systematic study of this question and proposed several natural conjectures. Let $\ell^{*}=\min\{\ell,\binom{k}{2}-\ell\}$. Our main result is that for any $k$ and $\ell$, the fraction of $k$-vertex subsets that span $\ell$ edges is at most $\log^{O\left(1\right)}\left(\ell^{*}/k\right)\sqrt{k/\ell^{*}}$, which is best-possible up to the logarithmic factor. This improves on multiple results of Alon, Hefetz, Krivelevich and Tyomkyn, and resolves one of their conjectures. In addition, we also make some first steps towards some analogous questions for hypergraphs. Our proofs involve some Ramsey-type arguments, and a number of different probabilistic tools, such as polynomial anticoncentration inequalities, hypercontractivity, and a coupling trick for random variables defined on a "slice" of the Boolean hypercube.
On a Problem of Wang Concerning the Hamiltonicity of Bipartite Digraphs
Published in Mathematical Problems of Computer Science 49, 26-34, 2018 • View PublicationBIB
R. Wang (Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 19(3), 2017) proposed the following problem. \textbf{Problem.} Let $D$ be a strongly connected balanced bipartite directed graph of order $2a\geq 8$. Suppose that $d(x)\geq 2a-k$, $ d(y)\geq a+k$ or $d(y)\geq 2a-k$, $ d(x)\geq a+k$ for every pair of vertices $x,y$ with a common out-neighbour, where $2 \leq k\leq a/2$. Is $D$ Hamiltonian? In this paper, we prove that if a digraph $D$ satisfies the conditions of this problem, then (i) $D$ contains a cycle factor, (ii) for every vertex $x\in V(D)$ there exists a vertex $y\in V(D)$ such that $x$ and $y$ have a common out-neighbour.

Mixed partition functions and exponentially bounded edge-connection rank
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study graph parameters whose associated edge-connection matrices have exponentially bounded rank growth. Our main result is an explicit construction of a large class of graph parameters with this property that we call mixed partition functions. Mixed partition functions can be seen as a generalization of partition functions of vertex models, as introduced by de la Harpe and Jones, [P. de la Harpe, V.F.R. Jones, Graph invariants related to statistical mechanical models: examples and problems, Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B 57 (1993) 207--227] and they are related to invariant theory of orthosymplectic supergroup. We moreover show that evaluations of the characteristic polynomial of a simple graph are examples of mixed partition functions, answering a question of de la Harpe and Jones.

On $r$-uniform hypergraphs with circumference less than $r$
We show that for each $k\geq 4$ and $n>r\geq k+1$, every $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph with no Berge cycle of length at least $k$ has at most $\frac{(k-1)(n-1)}{r}$ edges. The bound is exact, and we describe the extremal hypergraphs. This implies and slightly refines the theorem of Győri, Katona and Lemons that for $n>r\geq k\geq 3$, every $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph with no Berge path of length $k$ has at most $\frac{(k-1)n}{r+1}$ edges. To obtain the bounds, we study bipartite graphs with no cycles of length at least $2k$, and then translate the results into the language of multi-hypergraphs.

Counting maximal near perfect matchings in quasirandom and dense graphs
A maximal $\varepsilon$-near perfect matching is a maximal matching which covers at least $(1-\varepsilon)|V(G)|$ vertices. In this paper, we study the number of maximal near perfect matchings in generalized quasirandom and dense graphs. We provide tight lower and upper bounds on the number of $\varepsilon$-near perfect matchings in generalized quasirandom graphs. Moreover, based on these results, we provide a deterministic polynomial time algorithm that for a given dense graph $G$ of order $n$ and a real number $\varepsilon>0$, returns either a conclusion that $G$ has no $\varepsilon$-near perfect matching, or a positive non-trivial number $\ell$ such that the number of maximal $\varepsilon$-near perfect matchings in $G$ is at least $n^{\ell n}$. Our algorithm uses algorithmic version of Szemerédi Regularity Lemma, and has $O(f(\varepsilon)n^{5/2})$ time complexity. Here $f(\cdot)$ is an explicit function depending only on $\varepsilon$.

Algorithms for #BIS-hard problems on expander graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an FPTAS and an efficient sampling algorithm for the high-fugacity hard-core model on bounded-degree bipartite expander graphs and the low-temperature ferromagnetic Potts model on bounded-degree expander graphs. The results apply, for example, to random (bipartite) $Δ$-regular graphs, for which no efficient algorithms were known for these problems (with the exception of the Ising model) in the non-uniqueness regime of the infinite $Δ$-regular tree. We also find efficient counting and sampling algorithms for proper $q$-colorings of random $Δ$-regular bipartite graphs when $q$ is sufficiently small as a function of $Δ$.
Three local actions in $6$-valent arc-transitive graphs
It is known that there are precisely three transitive permutation groups of degree $6$ that admit an invariant partition with three parts of size $2$ such that the kernel of the action on the parts has order $4$; these groups are called $A_4(6)$, $S_4(6d)$ and $S_4(6c)$. For each $L\in \{A_4(6), S_4(6d), S_4(6c)\}$, we construct an infinite family of finite connected $6$-valent graphs $\{Γ_n\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ and arc-transitive groups $G_n \le \rm{Aut}(Γ_n)$ such that the permutation group induced by the action of the vertex-stabiliser $(G_n)_v$ on the neighbourhood of a vertex $v$ is permutation isomorphic to $L$, and such that $|(G_n)_v|$ is exponential in $|\rm{V}(Γ_n)|$. These three groups were the only transitive permutation groups of degree at most $7$ for which the existence of such a family was undecided. In the process, we construct an infinite family of cubic $2$-arc-transitive graphs such that the dimension of the $1$-eigenspace over the field of order $2$ of the adjacency matrix of the graph grows linearly with the order of the graph.
