Counting edge-Kempe-equivalence classes for 3-edge-colored cubic graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Two edge colorings of a graph are {\em edge-Kempe equivalent} if one can be obtained from the other by a series of edge-Kempe switches. This work gives some results for the number of edge-Kempe equivalence classes for cubic graphs. In particular we show every 2-connected planar bipartite cubic graph has exactly one edge-Kempe equivalence class. Additionally, we exhibit infinite families of nonplanar bipartite cubic graphs with a range of numbers of edge-Kempe equivalence classes. Techniques are developed that will be useful for analyzing other classes of graphs as well.

On d-graceful labelings
In this paper we introduce a generalization of the well known concept of a graceful labeling. Given a graph G with e=dm edges, we call d-graceful labeling of G an injective function from V(G) to the set {0,1,2,..., d(m+1)-1} such that {|f(x)-f(y)| | [x,y]\in E(G)} ={1,2,3,...,d(m+1)-1}-{m+1,2(m+1),...,(d-1)(m+1)}. In the case of d=1 and of d=e we find the classical notion of a graceful labeling and of an odd graceful labeling, respectively. Also, we call d-graceful α-labeling of a bipartite graph G a d-graceful labeling of G with the property that its maximum value on one of the two bipartite sets does not reach its minimum value on the other one. We show that these new concepts allow to obtain certain cyclic graph decompositions. We investigate the existence of d-graceful α-labelings for several classes of bipartite graphs, completely solving the problem for paths and stars and giving partial results about cycles of even length and ladders.

Small Littlewood-Richardson coefficients
Published • View Publication • BIB
We develop structural insights into the Littlewood-Richardson graph, whose number of vertices equals the Littlewood-Richardson coefficient c(λ,μ,ν) for given partitions λ, μ, and ν. This graph was first introduced by Bürgisser and Ikenmeyer in arXiv:1204.2484, where its connectedness was proved. Our insights are useful for the design of algorithms for computing the Littlewood-Richardson coefficient: We design an algorithm for the exact computation of c(λ,μ,ν) with running time O(c(λ,μ,ν)^2 poly(n)), where λ, μ, and ν are partitions of length at most n. Moreover, we introduce an algorithm for deciding whether c(λ,μ,ν) >= t whose running time is O(t^2 poly(n)). Even the existence of a polynomial-time algorithm for deciding whether c(λ,μ,ν) >= 2 is a nontrivial new result on its own. Our insights also lead to the proof of a conjecture by King, Tollu, and Toumazet posed in 2004, stating that c(λ,μ,ν) = 2 implies c(Mλ,Mμ,Mν) = M + 1 for all M. Here, the stretching of partitions is defined componentwise.

Higher connectivity of fiber graphs of Gröbner bases
Published in J. Alg. Stat., 4(1):93-107, 2013 • View Publication • BIB
Fiber graphs of Gröbner bases from contingency tables are important in statistical hypothesis testing, where one studies random walks on these graphs using the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. The connectivity of the graphs has implications on how fast the algorithm converges. In this paper, we study a class of fiber graphs with elementary combinatorial techniques and provide results that support a recent conjecture of Engström: the connectivity is given by the minimum vertex degree.
Triangle-free intersection graphs of line segments with large chromatic number
Published in J.Combin.Theory Ser.B 105 (2014) 6-10 • View Publication • BIB
In the 1970s, Erdos asked whether the chromatic number of intersection graphs of line segments in the plane is bounded by a function of their clique number. We show the answer is no. Specifically, for each positive integer $k$, we construct a triangle-free family of line segments in the plane with chromatic number greater than $k$. Our construction disproves a conjecture of Scott that graphs excluding induced subdivisions of any fixed graph have chromatic number bounded by a function of their clique number.

Ore's Conjecture for $k=4$ and Gr\" otzsch Theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is $k$-{\em critical} if it has chromatic number $k$, but every proper subgraph of $G$ is $(k-1)$--colorable. Let $f_k(n)$ denote the minimum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $k$-critical graph. In a very recent paper, we gave a lower bound, $f_k(n) \geq F(k,n)$, that is sharp for every $n=1\,({\rm mod}\, k-1)$. It is also sharp for $k=4$ and every $n\geq 6$. In this note, we present a simple proof of the bound for $k=4$. It implies the case $k=4$ of the conjecture by Ore from 1967 that for every $k\geq 4$ and $n\geq k+2$, $f_k(n+k-1)=f(n)+\frac{k-1}{2}(k - \frac{2}{k-1})$. We also show that our result implies a simple short proof of the Gr\" otzsch Theorem that every triangle-free planar graph is 3-colorable.
Edge-colouring eight-regular planar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
It was conjectured by the third author in about 1973 that every $d$-regular planar graph (possibly with parallel edges) can be $d$-edge-coloured, provided that for every odd set $X$ of vertices, there are at least $d$ edges between $X$ and its complement. For $d = 3$ this is the four-colour theorem, and the conjecture has been proved for all $d\le 7$, by various authors. Here we prove it for $d = 8$.

Lit-only sigma-game on nondegenerate graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A configuration of the lit-only $σ$-game on a graph $Γ$ is an assignment of one of two states, {\it on} or {\it off}, to each vertex of $Γ.$ Given a configuration, a move of the lit-only $σ$-game on $Γ$ allows the player to choose an {\it on} vertex $s$ of $Γ$ and change the states of all neighbors of $s.$ Given an integer $k$, the underlying graph $Γ$ is said to be $k$-lit if for any configuration, the number of {\it on} vertices can be reduced to at most $k$ by a finite sequence of moves. We give a description of the orbits of the lit-only $σ$-game on nondegenerate graphs $Γ$ which are not line graphs. We show that these graphs $Γ$ are 2-lit and provide a linear algebraic criterion for $Γ$ to be 1-lit.

The bondage number of graphs on topological surfaces and Teschner's conjecture
Published in Discrete Math. 313 (2013), no. 6, pp. 796-808 • View Publication • BIB
The bondage number of a graph is the smallest number of its edges whose removal results in a graph having a larger domination number. We provide constant upper bounds for the bondage number of graphs on topological surfaces, improve upper bounds for the bondage number in terms of the maximum vertex degree and the orientable and non-orientable genera of the graph, and show tight lower bounds for the number of vertices of graphs 2-cell embeddable on topological surfaces of a given genus. Also, we provide stronger upper bounds for graphs with no triangles and graphs with the number of vertices larger than a certain threshold in terms of the graph genera. This settles Teschner's Conjecture in positive for almost all graphs.

Ore's Conjecture on color-critical graphs is almost true
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is $k$-critical if it has chromatic number $k$, but every proper subgraph of $G$ is $(k-1)$--colorable. Let $f_k(n)$ denote the minimum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $k$-critical graph. We give a lower bound, $f_k(n) \geq F(k,n)$, that is sharp for every $n=1 ({\rm mod} k-1)$. It is also sharp for $k=4$ and every $n\geq 6$. The result improves the classical bounds by Gallai and Dirac and subsequent bounds by Krivelevich and Kostochka and Stiebitz. It establishes the asymptotics of $f_k(n)$ for every fixed $k$. It also proves that the conjecture by Ore from 1967 that for every $k\geq 4$ and $n\geq k+2$, $f_k(n+k-1)=f(n)+\frac{k-1}{2}(k - \frac{2}{k-1})$ holds for each $k\geq 4$ for all but at most $k^3/12$ values of $n$. We give a polynomial-time algorithm for $(k-1)$-coloring a graph $G$ that satisfies $|E(G[W])| < F_k(|W|)$ for all $W \subseteq V(G)$, $|W| \geq k$. We also present some applications of the result.

A Simple Test on 2-Vertex- and 2-Edge-Connectivity
Published • View Publication • BIB
Testing a graph on 2-vertex- and 2-edge-connectivity are two fundamental algorithmic graph problems. For both problems, different linear-time algorithms with simple implementations are known. Here, an even simpler linear-time algorithm is presented that computes a structure from which both the 2-vertex- and 2-edge-connectivity of a graph can be easily "read off". The algorithm computes all bridges and cut vertices of the input graph in the same time.

Combinatorial Tilings of the Sphere by Pentagons
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 20(1) (2013), #P54 • View Publication • BIB
A combinatorial tiling of the sphere is naturally given by an embedded graph. We study the case that each tile has exactly five edges, with the ultimate goal of classifying combinatorial tilings of the sphere by geometrically congruent pentagons. We show that the tiling cannot have only one vertex of degree >3. Moreover, we construct earth map tilings, which give classifications under the condition that vertices of degree >3 are at least of distance 4 apart, or under the condition that there are exactly two vertices of degree >3.
5-list-coloring planar graphs with distant precolored vertices
Published • View Publication • BIB
We answer positively the question of Albertson asking whether every planar graph can be $5$-list-colored even if it contains precolored vertices, as long as they are sufficiently far apart from each other. In order to prove this claim, we also give bounds on the sizes of graphs critical with respect to 5-list coloring. In particular, if G is a planar graph, H is a connected subgraph of G and L is an assignment of lists of colors to the vertices of G such that |L(v)| >= 5 for every v in V(G)-V(H) and G is not L-colorable, then G contains a subgraph with O(|H|^2) vertices that is not L-colorable.

A dynamic data structure for counting subgraphs in sparse graphs
We present a dynamic data structure representing a graph G, which allows addition and removal of edges from G and can determine the number of appearances of a graph of a bounded size as an induced subgraph of G. The queries are answered in constant time. When the data structure is used to represent graphs from a class with bounded expansion (which includes planar graphs and more generally all proper classes closed on topological minors, as well as many other natural classes of graphs with bounded average degree), the amortized time complexity of updates is polylogarithmic.
Strongly even-cycle decomposable graphs
Published in J. Graph Theory, 84(February 2017)(2), pp. 158-175 • View Publication • BIB
A graph is strongly even-cycle decomposable if the edge set of every subdivision with an even number of edges can be partitioned into cycles of even length. We prove that several fundamental composition operations that preserve the property of being Eulerian also yield strongly even-cycle decomposable graphs. As an easy application of our theorems, we give an exact characterization of the set of strongly even-cycle decomposable cographs.

Sidorenko's conjecture for a class of graphs: an exposition
A famous conjecture of Sidorenko and Erdős-Simonovits states that if H is a bipartite graph then the random graph with edge density p has in expectation asymptotically the minimum number of copies of H over all graphs of the same order and edge density. The goal of this expository note is to give a short self-contained proof (suitable for teaching in class) of the conjecture if H has a vertex complete to all vertices in the other part.

Counting Plane Graphs: Cross-Graph Charging Schemes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study cross-graph charging schemes for graphs drawn in the plane. These are charging schemes where charge is moved across vertices of different graphs. Such methods have been recently applied to obtain various properties of triangulations that are embedded over a fixed set of points in the plane. We show how this method can be generalized to obtain results for various other types of graphs that are embedded in the plane. Specifically, we obtain a new bound of $O^*(187.53^N)$ (where the $O^*()$ notation hides polynomial factors) for the maximum number of crossing-free straight-edge graphs that can be embedded over any specific set of $N$ points in the plane (improving upon the previous best upper bound $207.85^N$ in Hoffmann et al.). We also derive upper bounds for numbers of several other types of plane graphs (such as connected and bi-connected plane graphs), and obtain various bounds on expected vertex-degrees in graphs that are uniformly chosen from the set of all crossing-free straight-edge graphs that can be embedded over a specific point set. We then show how to apply the cross-graph charging-scheme method for graphs that allow certain types of crossings. Specifically, we consider graphs with no set of $k$ pairwise-crossing edges (more commonly known as $k$-quasi-planar graphs). For $k=3$ and $k=4$, we prove that, for any set $S$ of $N$ points in the plane, the number of graphs that have a straight-edge $k$-quasi-planar embedding over $S$ is only exponential in $N$.

Group Irregular Labelings of Disconnected Graphs
Published in Contributions to Discrete Mathematics Vol 12, No 2 (2017), 158-166 • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the \textit{group irregularity strength} ($s_g(G)$) of graphs, i.e. the smallest value of $s$ such that taking any Abelian group $\gr$ of order $s$, there exists a function $f:E(G)\rightarrow \gr$ such that the sums of edge labels at every vertex are distinct. We give the exact values and bounds on $s_g(G)$ for chosen families of disconnected graphs. In addition we present some results for the \textit{modular edge gracefulness} $k(G)$, i.e. the smallest value of $s$ such that there exists a function $f:E(G)\rightarrow \zet_s$ such that the sums of edge labels at every vertex are distinct.

A note on 5-cycle double covers
Published • View Publication • BIB
The strong cycle double cover conjecture states that for every circuit $C$ of a bridgeless cubic graph $G$, there is a cycle double cover of $G$ which contains $C$. We conjecture that there is even a 5-cycle double cover $S$ of $G$ which contains $C$, i.e. $C$ is a subgraph of one of the five 2-regular subgraphs of $S$. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for a 2-regular subgraph to be contained in a 5-cycle double cover of $G$.

A stronger structure theorem for excluded topological minors
Grohe and Marx proved that if G does not contain H as a topological minor, then there exist constants g=O(|V(H)|^4), D and t depending only on H such that G is a clique sum of graphs that either contain at most t vertices of degree greater than D or almost embed in some surface of genus at most g. We strengthen this result, giving a more precise description of the latter kind of basic graphs of the decomposition - we only allow graphs that (almost) embed in ways that are impossible for H (similarly to the structure theorem for minors, where only graphs almost embedded in surfaces in that H does not embed are allowed). This enables us to give structural results for graphs avoiding a fixed graph as an immersion and for graphs with bounded infinity-admissibility.
