A differential approach for bounding the index of graphs under perturbations
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 18 (2011), no. 1, P172 • Search Publication
This paper presents bounds for the variation of the spectral radius $λ(G)$ of a graph $G$ after some perturbations or local vertex/edge modifications of $G$. The perturbations considered here are the connection of a new vertex with, say, $g$ vertices of $G$, the addition of a pendant edge (the previous case with $g=1$) and the addition of an edge. The method proposed here is based on continuous perturbations and the study of their differential inequalities associated. Within rather economical information (namely, the degrees of the vertices involved in the perturbation), the best possible inequalities are obtained. In addition, the cases when equalities are attained are characterized. The asymptotic behavior of the bounds obtained is also discussed. For instance, if $G$ is a connected graph and $G_u$ denotes the graph obtained from $G$ by adding a pendant edge at vertex $u$ with degree $δ_u$, then, $$ λ(G_u)\le λ(G)+\frac{δ_u}{λ^3(G)}+\textrm{o}(\frac{1}{λ^3(G)}). $$

A note on a Broken-cycle Theorem for hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Whitney's Broken-cycle Theorem states the chromatic polynomial of a graph as a sum over special edge subsets. We give a definition of cycles in hypergraphs that preserves the statement of the theorem there.

Chorded complexes and a necessary condition for a monomial ideal to have a linear resolution
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we extend one direction of Fröberg's theorem on a combinatorial classification of quadratic monomial ideals with linear resolutions. We do this by generalizing the notion of a chordal graph to higher dimensions with the introduction of d-chorded and orientably-d-cycle-complete simplicial complexes. We show that a certain class of simplicial complexes, the d-dimensional trees, correspond to ideals having linear resolutions over fields of characteristic 2 and also give a necessary combinatorial condition for a monomial ideal to be componentwise linear over all fields.
A Cheeger-Type Inequality on Simplicial Complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we consider a variation on Cheeger numbers related to the coboundary expanders recently defined by Dotterer and Kahle. A Cheeger-type inequality is proved, which is similar to a result on graphs due to Fan Chung. This inequality is then used to study the relationship between coboundary expanders on simplicial complexes and their corresponding eigenvalues, complementing and extending results found by Gundert and Wagner. In particular, we find these coboundary expanders do not satisfy natural Buser or Cheeger inequalities.

Invariant polynomial functions on tensors under the action of a product of orthogonal groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let K be the product O(n_1) x O(n_2) x ... x O(n_r) of orthogonal groups. Let V the r-fold tensor product of defining representations of each orthogonal factor. We compute a stable formula for the dimension of the K-invariant algebra of degree d homogeneous polynomial functions on V. To accomplish this, we compute a formula for the number of matchings which commute with a fixed permutation. Finally, we provide formulas for the invariants and describe a bijection between a basis for the space of invariants and the isomorphism classes of certain r-regular graphs on d vertices, as well as a method of associating each invariant to other combinatorial settings such as phylogenetic trees.

Schubert Polynomials and $k$-Schur functions
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 21 (2014), no. 4, Paper 4.27, 21 pp • View Publication • BIB
The main purpose of this paper is to show that the multiplication of a Schubert polynomial of finite type $A$ by a Schur function, which we refer to as Schubert vs. Schur problem, can be understood from the multiplication in the space of dual $k$-Schur functions. Using earlier work by the second author, we encode both problems by means of quasisymmetric functions. On the Schubert vs. Schur side, we study the poset given by the Bergeron-Sottile's $r$-Bruhat order, along with certain operators associated to this order. On the other side, we connect this poset with a graph on dual $k$-Schur functions given by studying the affine grassmannian order of Lam-Lapointe-Morse-Shimozono. Also, we define operators associated to the graph on dual $k$-Schur functions which are analogous to the ones given for the Schubert vs. Schur problem.

On congruence in Z^n and the dimension of a multidimensional circulant
Published in Discrete Math. 141 (1995) 123--134 • View Publication • BIB
From a generalization to $Z^n$ of the concept of congruence we define a family of regular digraphs or graphs called multidimensional circulants, which turn out to be Cayley (di)graphs of Abelian groups. This paper is mainly devoted to show the relationship between the Smith normal form for integral matrices and the dimensions of such (di)graphs, that is the minimum ranks of the groups they can arise from. In particular, those 2-step multidimensional circulants which are circulants, that is Cayley (di)graphs of cyclic groups, are fully characterized. In addition, a reasoning due to Lawrence is used to prove that the cartesian product of $n$ circulants with equal number of vertices $p>2$, $p$ a prime, has dimension $n$.
Cheeger inequalities for unbounded graph Laplacians

We use the concept of intrinsic metrics to give a new definition for an isoperimetric constant of a graph. We use this novel isoperimetric constant to prove a Cheeger-type estimate for the bottom of the spectrum which is nontrivial even if the vertex degrees are unbounded.

1-factor and cycle covers of cubic graphs
Published in Journal of Graph Theory 78 (2015) 195-206 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a bridgeless cubic graph. Consider a list of $k$ 1-factors of $G$. Let $E_i$ be the set of edges contained in precisely $i$ members of the $k$ 1-factors. Let $μ_k(G)$ be the smallest $|E_0|$ over all lists of $k$ 1-factors of $G$. Any list of three 1-factors induces a core of a cubic graph. We use results on the structure of cores to prove sufficient conditions for Berge-covers and for the existence of three 1-factors with empty intersection. Furthermore, if $μ_3(G) \not = 0$, then $2 μ_3(G)$ is an upper bound for the girth of $G$. We also prove some new upper bounds for the length of shortest cycle covers of bridgeless cubic graphs. Cubic graphs with $μ_4(G) = 0$ have a 4-cycle cover of length $\frac{4}{3} |E(G)|$ and a 5-cycle double cover. These graphs also satisfy two conjectures of Zhang. We also give a negative answer to a problem of Zhang.

Snake graph calculus and cluster algebras from surfaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
Snake graphs appear naturally in the theory of cluster algebras. For cluster algebras from surfaces, each cluster variable is given by a formula which is parametrized by the perfect matchings of a snake graph. In this paper, we identify each cluster variable with its snake graph, and interpret relations among the cluster variables in terms of these graphs. In particular, we give a new proof of skein relations of two cluster variables.
A graph minors characterization of signed graphs whose signed Colin de Verdière parameter $ν$ is two
Published • View Publication • BIB
A signed graph is a pair $(G,Σ)$, where $G=(V,E)$ is a graph (in which parallel edges are permitted, but loops are not) with $V=\{1,...,n\}$ and $Σ\subseteq E$. The edges in $Σ$ are called odd and the other edges even. By $S(G,Σ)$ we denote the set of all symmetric $n\times n$ matrices $A=[a_{i,j}]$ with $a_{i,j}<0$ if $i$ and $j$ are connected by only even edges, $a_{i,j}>0$ if $i$ and $j$ are connected by only odd edges, $a_{i,j}\in \mathbb{R}$ if $i$ and $j$ are connected by both even and odd edges, $a_{i,j}=0$ if $i\not=j$ and $i$ and $j$ are non-adjacent, and $a_{i,i} \in \mathbb{R}$ for all vertices $i$. The parameter $ν(G,Σ)$ of a signed graph $(G,Σ)$ is the largest nullity of any positive semidefinite matrix $A\in S(G,Σ)$ that has the Strong Arnold Property. By $K_3^=$ we denote the signed graph obtained from $(K_3,\emptyset)$ by adding to each even edge an odd edge in parallel. In this paper, we prove that a signed graph $(G,Σ)$ has $ν(G,Σ)\leq 2$ if and only if $(G,Σ)$ has no minor isomorphic to $(K_4,E(K_4))$ or $K_3^=$.
Assortativity and clustering of sparse random intersection graphs
Published in Electron. J. Probab. Volume 18 (2013), paper no. 38, 24 pp • View Publication • BIB
We consider sparse random intersection graphs with the property that the clustering coefficient does not vanish as the number of nodes tends to infinity. We find explicit asymptotic expressions for the correlation coefficient of degrees of adjacent nodes (called the assortativity coefficient), the expected number of common neighbours of adjacent nodes, and the expected degree of a neighbour of a node of a given degree k. These expressions are written in terms of the asymptotic degree distribution and, alternatively, in terms of the parameters defining the underlying random graph model.

On the positive definiteness and eigenvalues of meet and join matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study the positive definiteness of meet and join matrices using a novel approach. When the set $S_n$ is meet closed, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for the positive definiteness of the matrix $(S_n)_f$. From this condition we obtain some sufficient conditions for positive definiteness as corollaries. We also use graph theory and show that by making some graph theoretic assumptions on the set $S_n$ we are able to reduce the assumptions on the function $f$ while still preserving the positive definiteness of the matrix $(S_n)_f$. Dual theorems of these results for join matrices are also presented. As examples we consider the so-called power GCD and power LCM matrices as well as MIN and MAX matrices. Finally we give bounds for the eigenvalues of meet and join matrices in cases when the function $f$ possesses certain monotonic behaviour.

Weakly closed graphs and F-purity of binomial edge ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Herzog-Hibi-Hreindóttir-Kahle-Rauh introduced the class of closed graph and they proved that the binomial edge ideal $J(G)$ of a graph $G$ has quadratic Gröbner bases if $G$ is closed. In this paper, we introduce the class of weakly closed graph as a generalization of the closed graph and prove that the quotient ring $S/J(G)$ is $F$-pure if $G$ is weakly closed. This fact is a generalization of Ohtani's theorem.

Cubic Augmentation of Planar Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study the problem of augmenting a planar graph such that it becomes 3-regular and remains planar. We show that it is NP-hard to decide whether such an augmentation exists. On the other hand, we give an efficient algorithm for the variant of the problem where the input graph has a fixed planar (topological) embedding that has to be preserved by the augmentation. We further generalize this algorithm to test efficiently whether a 3-regular planar augmentation exists that additionally makes the input graph connected or biconnected. If the input graph should become even triconnected, we show that the existence of a 3-regular planar augmentation is again NP-hard to decide.

Two sufficient conditions for the existence of Hamilton cycles in graphs
Let $G$ be a graph on $n\geq 3$ vertices, claw the bipartite graph $K_{1,3}$, and $Z_i$ the graph obtained from a triangle by attaching a path of length $i$ to its one vertex. $G$ is called 1-heavy if at least one end vertex of each induced claw of $G$ has degree at least $n/2$, and claw-\emph{o}-heavy if each induced claw of it has a pair of end vertices with degree sum at least $n$. In this paper we prove two results: (1) Every 2-connected claw-$o$-heavy graph $G$ is Hamiltonian if every pair of vertices $u,v$ in a subgraph $H\cong Z_1$ contained in an induced subgraph $Z_2$ of $G$ with $d_{H}(u,v)=2$ satisfies one of the following conditions: ($a$) $|N(u)\cap N(v)|\geq 2$; ($b$) $\max(d(u),d(v))\geq n/2$. (2) Every 3-connected 1-heavy graph $G$ is Hamiltonian if every pair of vertices $u,v$ in an induced subgraph $H\cong Z_2$ of $G$ with $d_{H}(u,v)=2$ satisfies one of the following conditions: ($a$) $|N(u)\cap N(v)|\geq 2$; ($b$) $\max(d(u),d(v))\geq n/2$. Our results improve or extend previous theorems of Broersma et al., Chen et al., Fan, Goodman & Hedetniemi, Gould & Jacobson and Shi on the existence of Hamilton cycles in graphs.

Ising Model Observables and Non-Backtracking Walks
Published in J. Math. Phys. 55, 083304 (2014) • View Publication • BIB
This paper presents an alternative proof of the connection between the partition function of the Ising model on a finite graph $G$ and the set of non-backtracking walks on $G$. The techniques used also give formulas for spin-spin correlation functions in terms of non-backtracking walks. The main tools used are Viennot's theory of heaps of pieces and turning numbers on surfaces.

Exact Bounds for Some Hypergraph Saturation Problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let W_n(p,q) denote the minimum number of edges in an n x n bipartite graph G on vertex sets X,Y that satisfies the following condition; one can add the edges between X and Y that do not belong to G one after the other so that whenever a new edge is added, a new copy of K_{p,q} is created. The problem of bounding W_n(p,q), and its natural hypergraph generalization, was introduced by Balogh, Bollobás, Morris and Riordan. Their main result, specialized to graphs, used algebraic methods to determine W_n(1,q). Our main results in this paper give exact bounds for W_n(p,q), its hypergraph analogue, as well as for a new variant of Bollobás's Two Families theorem. In particular, we completely determine W_n(p,q), showing that if 1 <= p <= q <= n then W_n(p,q) = n^2 - (n-p+1)^2 + (q-p)^2. Our proof applies a reduction to a multi-partite version of the Two Families theorem obtained by Alon. While the reduction is combinatorial, the main idea behind it is algebraic.

Coloring graphs with dense neighborhoods
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is shown that any graph with maximum degree $Δ$ in which the average degree of the induced subgraph on the set of all neighbors of any vertex exceeds $\frac{6k^2}{6k^2 + 1}Δ+ k + 6$ is either $(Δ- k)$-colorable or contains a clique on more than $Δ- 2k$ vertices. In the $k=1$ case we improve the bound on the average degree to $\frac23Δ+ 4$ and the bound on the clique number to $Δ-1$. As corollaries, we show that every graph satisfies $χ\leq \max\set{ω, Δ- 1, 4α}$ and every graph satisfies $χ\leq \max\set{ω, Δ- 1, \ceil{\frac{15 + \sqrt{48n + 73}}{4}}}$.

The Maximum Traveling Salesman Problem with Submodular Rewards
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we look at the problem of finding the tour of maximum reward on an undirected graph where the reward is a submodular function, that has a curvature of $κ$, of the edges in the tour. This problem is known to be NP-hard. We analyze two simple algorithms for finding an approximate solution. Both algorithms require $O(|V|^3)$ oracle calls to the submodular function. The approximation factors are shown to be $\frac{1}{2+κ}$ and $\max\set{\frac{2}{3(2+κ)},2/3(1-κ)}$, respectively; so the second method has better bounds for low values of $κ$. We also look at how these algorithms perform for a directed graph and investigate a method to consider edge costs in addition to rewards. The problem has direct applications in monitoring an environment using autonomous mobile sensors where the sensing reward depends on the path taken. We provide simulation results to empirically evaluate the performance of the algorithms.
