Orientation Ramsey thresholds for cycles and cliques
Published • View PublicationBIB
If $G$ is a graph and $\vec H$ is an oriented graph, we write $G\to \vec H$ to say that every orientation of the edges of $G$ contains $\vec H$ as a subdigraph. We consider the case in which $G=G(n,p)$, the binomial random graph. We determine the threshold $p_{\vec H}=p_{\vec H}(n)$ for the property $G(n,p)\to \vec H$ for the cases in which $\vec H$ is an acyclic orientation of a complete graph or of a cycle.
The Noncrossing Bond Poset of a Graph
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics (2020) Vol 27, Issue 4 • View PublicationBIB
The partition lattice and noncrossing partition lattice are well studied objects in combinatorics. Given a graph $G$ on vertex set $\{1,2,\dots, n\}$, its bond lattice, $L_G$, is the subposet of the partition lattice formed by restricting to the partitions whose blocks induce connected subgraphs of $G$. In this article, we introduce a natural noncrossing analogue of the bond lattice, the noncrossing bond poset, $NC_G$, obtained by restricting to the noncrossing partitions of $L_G$. Both the noncrossing partition lattice and the bond lattice have many nice combinatorial properties. We show that, for several families of graphs, the noncrossing bond poset also exhibits these properties. We present simple necessary and sufficient conditions on the graph to ensure the noncrossing bond poset is a lattice. Additionally, for several families of graphs, we give combinatorial descriptions of the Möbius function and characteristic polynomial of the noncrossing bond poset. These descriptions are in terms of a noncrossing analogue of non-broken circuit (NBC) sets of the graphs and can be thought of as a noncrossing version of Whitney's NBC theorem for the chromatic polynomial. We also consider the shellability and supersolvability of the noncrossing bond poset, providing sufficient conditions for both. We end with some open problems.

Intersecting longest paths in chordal graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the size of the smallest set of vertices required to intersect every longest path in a chordal graph. Such sets are known as longest path transversals. We show that if $ω(G)$ is the clique number of a chordal graph $G$, then there is a transversal of order at most $4\lceil\frac{ω(G)}{5}\rceil$. We also consider the analogous question for longest cycles, and show that if $G$ is a 2-connected chordal graph then there is a transversal intersecting all longest cycles of order at most $2\lceil\frac{ω(G)}{3}\rceil$.

Complexes, Graphs, Homotopy, Products and Shannon Capacity
A finite abstract simplicial complex G defines the Barycentric refinement graph phi(G) = (G,{ (a,b), a subset b or b subset a }) and the connection graph psi(G) = (G,{ (a,b), a intersected with b not empty }). We note here that both functors phi and psi from complexes to graphs are invertible on the image (Theorem 1) and that G,phi(G),psi(G) all have the same automorphism group and that the Cartesian product of G corresponding to the Stanley-Reisner product of phi(G) and the strong Shannon product of psi(G), have the product automorphism groups. Second, we see that if G is a Barycentric refinement, then phi(G) and psi(G) are graph homotopic (Theorem 2). Third, if gamma is the geometric realization functor, assigning to a complex or to a graph the geometric realization of its clique complex, then gamma(G) and gamma(phi(G)) and gamma(psi(G)) are all classically homotopic for a Barycentric refined simplicial complex G (Theorem 3). The Barycentric assumption is necessary in Theorem 2 and 3. There is compatibility with Cartesian products of complexes which manifests in the strong graph product of connection graphs: if two graphs A,A' are homotopic and B,B' are homotopic, then A . B is homotopic to A' . B' (Theorem 4) leading to a commutative ring of homotopy classes of graphs. Finally, we note (Theorem 5) that for all simplicial complexes G as well as product G=G_1 x G_2 ... x G_k, the Shannon capacity Theta(psi(G)) of psi(G) is equal to the number m of zero-dimensional sets in G. An explicit Lowasz umbrella in R^m leads to the Lowasz number theta(G) leq m and so Theta(psi(G))=theta(psi(G))=m making Theta compatible with disjoint union addition and strong multiplication.

Torsion of digraphs and path complexes
We define the notions of Reidemeister torsion and analytic torsion for directed graphs by means of the path homology theory introduced by the authors in \cite{Grigoryan-Lin-Muranov-Yau2013, Grigoryan-Lin-Muranov-Yau2014, Grigoryan-Lin-Muranov-Yau2015, Grigoryan-Lin-Muranov-Yau2020}. We prove the identity of the two notions of torsions as well as obtain formulas for torsions of Cartesian products and joins of digraphs.

Fair Integral Submodular Flows
Published • View PublicationBIB
Integer-valued elements of an integral submodular flow polyhedron $Q$ are investigated which are decreasingly minimal (dec-min) in the sense that their largest component is as small as possible, within this, the second largest component is as small as possible, and so on. As a main result, we prove that the set of dec-min integral elements of $Q$ is the set of integral elements of another integral submodular flow polyhedron arising from $Q$ by intersecting a face of $Q$ with a box. Based on this description, we develop a strongly polynomial algorithm for computing not only a dec-min integer-valued submodular flow but even a cheapest one with respect to a linear cost-function. A special case is the problem of finding a strongly connected (or $k$-edge-connected) orientation of a mixed graph whose in-degree vector is decreasingly minimal.

Hamiltonian chromatic number of trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple finite connected graph of order $n$. The detour distance between two distinct vertices $u$ and $v$ denoted by $D(u,v)$ is the length of a longest $uv$-path in $G$. A hamiltonian coloring $h$ of a graph $G$ of order $n$ is a mapping $h : V(G) \rightarrow \{0,1,2,...\}$ such that $D(u,v) + |h(u)-h(v)| \geq n-1$, for every two distinct vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$. The span of $h$, denoted by $span(h)$, is $\max\{|h(u)-h(v)| : u, v \in V(G)\}$. The hamiltonian chromatic number of $G$ is defined as $hc(G) := \min\{span(h)\}$ with minimum taken over all hamiltonian coloring $h$ of $G$. In this paper, we give an improved lower bound for the hamiltonian chromatic number of trees and give a necessary and sufficient condition to achieve the improved lower bound. Using this result, we determine the hamiltonian chromatic number of two families of trees.

Ergodicity of the Martin boundary of the Young--Fibonacci graph. I
Among central measures on the path space of the Young--Fibonacci lattice the so-called Plancherel measure has a special role. Its ergodicity was proved by Kerov and Gnedin. The goal of this cycle of two articles is to prove that remaining measures from the Martin boundary of this graph (which were described by Kerov and Goodman) are also ergodic. The measures are parametrized with an infinite word of digits 1 and 2 and the parameter $β\in(0,1]$ (the case $β=0$ corresponds to the Plancherel measure). In this article we prove the statements which correspond to the case $β=1$.

The difference between several metric dimension graph invariants
In this paper extremal values of the difference between several graph invariants related to the metric dimension are studied: mixed metric dimension, edge metric dimension and strong metric dimension. These non-trivial extremal values are computed over all connected graphs of given order. To obtain such extremal values several techniques are developed. They use functions related to metric dimension graph invariants to obtain lower and/or upper bounds on these extremal values and exact computations when restricting to some specific families of graphs.

On the metric dimension of incidence graph of Möbius planes
We study the metric dimension and optimal split-resolving sets of the point-circle incidence graph of a Möbius plane. We prove that the metric dimension of a Möbius plane of order $q$ is around $2q$, and that an optimal split-resolving set has cardinality between approximately $5q$ and $2.5q\log q$. We also prove that a smallest blocking set of a Möbius plane of order $q$ has at most $2q(1 + \log(q + 1))$ points.
Edge-connectivity and tree-structure in finite and infinite graphs
We show that every graph admits a canonical tree-like decomposition into its $k$-edge-connected pieces for all $k\in\mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\}$ simultaneously.

Realization of distance matrices by graphs of genus 1
Given a distance matrix $D$, we study the behavior of its compaction vector and reduction matrix with respect to the problem of the realization of $D$ by a weighted graph. To this end, we first give a general result on realization by $n-$cycles and successively we mainly focus on graphs of genus 1, presenting an algorithm which determines when a distance matrix is realizable by such a kind of graph, and then, shows how to construct it.

Parity Labeling in Signed Graphs
Published in Journal of Prime Research in Mathematics, 17(2) (2021), 1-7 • Search Publication
Let $S=(G, σ)$ be a signed graph where $G=(V, E)$ is a graph called the underlying graph of $S$ and $σ:E(G) \rightarrow \{+,~-\}$. Let $f:V(G) \rightarrow \{1,2,\dots,|V(G)|\}$ such that $σ(uv)=+$ if and only if $f(u)$ and $f(v)$ are of same parity and $σ(uv)=-$ if and only if $f(u)$ and $f(v)$ are of opposite parity. Under $f$ we get a signed graph $G_f$ denoted as $S$, which is a parity signed graph. In this paper, we initiate the study of parity labeling in signed graphs and we define and find `rna' number denoted as $σ^-(S)$ for some classes of signed graphs. We also characterize some signed graphs which are parity signed graphs. Some directions for further research are also suggested.

Concerning Iterative Graph Normalization and Maximum Weight Independent Sets
We consider a very simple dynamical system on weighted graphs which we call Iterative Graph Normalization (IGN) and a variant in which we apply a non-linear activation function to the weights after each normalization. We show that the indicator vectors of the Maximal Independent Sets of the graph are the only binary fixed points of IGN, that they are attractive under simple conditions on the activation function and we characterize their basins of attraction. We enumerate a number of other fixed points and we prove repulsivity for some classes. Based on extensive experiments and different theoretical arguments we conjecture that IGN always converges and converges to a binary solution for non-linear activations. If our conjectures are correct, IGN would thus be a differentiable approximation algorithm for the Maximum Weight Independent Set problem (MWIS), a central NP-hard optimization problem with numerous applications. IGN is closely related to a greedy approximation algorithm of MWIS by Kako et al. which has a proven approximation ratio. Experimental results show that IGN provides solutions of very similar quality. In the context of the Assignment Problem, IGN corresponds to an iterative matrix normalization scheme which is closely related to the Sinkhorn-Knopp algorithm except that it projects to a permutation matrix instead of a doubly stochastic matrix. We relate our scheme to the Softassign algorithm and provide comparative results. As Graph Normalization is differentiable, its iterations can be embedded into a machine learning framework and used to train end-to-end any model which includes a graphical optimization step which can be cast as a maximum weight independent set problem. This includes problems such as graph and hypergraph matching, sequence alignment, clustering, ranking, etc. with applications in multiple domains.

Completely regular codes in Johnson and Grassmann graphs with small covering radii
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let L be a Desarguesian 2-spread in the Grassmann graph $J_q(n,2)$. We prove that the collection of the 4-subspaces, which do not contain subspaces from L is a completely regular code in $J_q(n,4)$. Similarly, we construct a completely regular code in the Johnson graph $J(n,6)$ from the Steiner quadruple system of the extended Hamming code. We obtain several new completely regular codes covering radius 1 in the Grassmann graph $J_2(6,3)$ using binary linear programming.

Lions and contamination, triangular grids, and Cheeger constants
Published • View PublicationBIB
Suppose each vertex of a graph is originally occupied by contamination, except for those vertices occupied by lions. As the lions wander on the graph, they clear the contamination from each vertex they visit. However, the contamination simultaneously spreads to any adjacent vertex not occupied by a lion. How many lions are required in order to clear the graph of contamination? We give a lower bound on the number of lions needed in terms of the Cheeger constant of the graph. Furthermore, the lion and contamination problem has been studied in detail on square grid graphs by Brass et al. and Berger et al., and we extend this analysis to the setting of triangular grid graphs.

Maximizing the number of maximal independent sets of a fixed size
For a fixed graph G, a maximal independent set is an independent set that is not a proper subset of any other independent set. P. Erdös, and independently, J. W. Moon and L. Moser, and R. E. Miller and D. E. Muller, determined the maximum number of maximal independent sets in a graph on n vertices, as well as the extremal graphs. In this paper we maximize the number of maximal independent sets of a fixed size for all graphs of order n and determine the extremal graphs. Our result generalizes the classical result.

Rainbow Perfect and Near-Perfect Matchings in Complete Graphs with Edges Colored by Circular Distance
Given an edge-colored complete graph $K_n$ on $n$ vertices, a perfect (respectively, near-perfect) matching $M$ in $K_n$ with an even (respectively, odd) number of vertices is rainbow if all edges have distinct colors. In this paper, we consider an edge coloring of $K_n$ by circular distance, and we denote the resulting complete graph by $K^{\bullet}_n$. We show that when $K^{\bullet}_n$ has an even number of vertices, it contains a rainbow perfect matching if and only if $n=8k$ or $n=8k+2$, where $k$ is a nonnegative integer. In the case of an odd number of vertices, Kirkman matching is known to be a rainbow near-perfect matching in $K^{\bullet}_n$. However, real-world applications sometimes require multiple rainbow near-perfect matchings. We propose a method for using a recursive algorithm to generate multiple rainbow near-perfect matchings in $K^{\bullet}_n$.

Primarily orientable graphs

A graph $G$ is primarily orientable if it is possible to orient its edges in such a way that the resulting oriented graph is prime, i.e., indecomposable under modular decomposition. We characterize primarily orientable graphs.
