Matching Book Embedding of the Cartesian Product of a Complete Graph and a Cycle
Published in Ars Combinatoria,2020(153),pp.89-97 • Search Publication
The $book$ $embedding$ of a graph $G$ is to place the vertices of $G$ on the spine and draw the edges to the pages so that the edges in the same page do not cross with each other. The book embedding is $matching$ if the pages have maximum degree $1$. The $matching$ $book$ $thickness$ is the minimum number of pages in which graphs can be matching book embedded. In this paper, we show that the matching book thickness of the Cartesian product $K_p\Box C_q$of a complete graph $K_p$ and a cycle $C_q$ is equal to $Δ(K_p\Box C_q)+1$.

On discrete surfaces: Enumerative geometry, matrix models and universality classes via topological recursion
The main objects under consideration in this thesis are called maps, a certain class of graphs embedded on surfaces. Our problems have a powerful relatively recent tool in common, the so-called topological recursion (TR) introduced by Chekhov, Eynard and Orantin. We call a map fully simple if it has non self-intersecting disjoint boundaries, and ordinary if such a restriction is not imposed. We study the combinatorial relation between fully simple and ordinary maps with the topology of a disk or a cylinder, which reproduces relations between moments and free cumulants established in the context of free probability. We propose a combinatorial interpretation of the exchange symplectic transformation of TR. We provide a matrix model interpretation for fully simple maps via the formal hermitian matrix model with external field and deduce a universal relation between generating series of fully simple and ordinary maps, which involves double monotone Hurwitz numbers. In particular, we obtain an ELSV-like formula for double $2$-orbifold strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers. We consider ordinary maps endowed with an $O(\mathsf{n})$ loop model, which is a classical model in statistical physics, and determine which shapes are more likely to occur by looking at the nesting properties of the loops decorating the maps. We want to study the limiting objects when the number of vertices becomes arbitrarily large, which can be done by studying the generating series at dominant singularities. We analyze the nesting statistics in the $O(\mathsf{n})$ loop model on random maps of arbitrary topologies in the presence of large and small boundaries, relying on previous results for disks and cylinders and TR for this model. We study the generating series of maps which realize a fixed nesting graph and characterize their critical behavior in the dense and dilute phases.

Exact minimum codegree thresholds for $K_4^-$-covering and $K_5^-$-covering
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given two $3$-graphs $F$ and $H$, an $F$-covering of $H$ is a collection of copies of $F$ in $H$ such that each vertex of $H$ is contained in at least one copy of them. Let {$c_2(n,F)$} be the maximum integer $t$ such that every 3-graph with minimum codegree greater than $t$ has an $F$-covering. In this note, we answer an open problem of Falgas-Ravry and Zhao (SIAM J. Discrete Math., 2016) by determining the exact value of {$c_2(n, K_4^-)$} and {$c_2(n, K_5^-)$}, where $K_t^-$ is the complete $3$-graph on $t$ vertices with one edge removed.

Fractional matching number and spectral radius of nonnegative matrix of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A fractional matching of a graph $G$ is a function $f:E(G) \to [0,1]$ such that for any $v\in V(G)$, $\sum_{e\in E_G(v)}f(e)\leq 1$ where $E_G(v) = \{e \in E(G): e$ is incident with $v$ in $G\}$. The fractional matching number of $G$ is $μ_{f}(G) = \max\{\sum_{e\in E(G)} f(e): f$ is fractional matching of $G\}$. For any real numbers $a \ge 0$ and $k \in (0, n)$, it is observed that if $n = |V(G)|$ and $δ(G) > \frac{n-k}{2}$, then $μ_{f}(G)>\frac{n-k}{2}$. We determine a function $\varphi(a, n,δ, k)$ and show that for a connected graph $G$ with $n = |V(G)|$, $δ(G) \leq\frac{n-k}{2}$, spectral radius $λ_1(G)$ and complement $\overline{G}$, each of the following holds. (i) If $λ_{1}(aD(G)+A(G))<\varphi(a, n, δ, k),$ then $μ_{f}(G)>\frac{n-k}{2}.$ (ii) If $λ_{1}(aD(\overline{G})+A(\overline{G}))<(a+1)(δ+k-1),$ then $μ_{f}(G)>\frac{n-k}{2}.$ As corollaries, sufficient spectral condition for fractional perfect matchings and analogous results involving $Q$-index and $A_α$-spectral radius are obtained, and former spectral results in [European J. Combin. 55 (2016) 144-148] are extended.

On characterizing proper-max-point tolerance graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Max-point-tolerance graphs (MPTG) was introduced by Catanzaro et al. in 2017 as a generalization of interval graphs. This graph class has many practical applications in study of human genome as well as in signal processing for networks. The same class of graphs were also studied in the name of p-BOX(1) graphs by Soto and Caro in 2015. In our article, we consider a natural subclass of max-point-tolerance graphs namely, proper max-point-tolerance graphs (proper MPTG) where intervals associated to the vertices are not contained in each other properly. We present the first characterization theorem of this graph class by defining certain linear ordering on the vertex set. In course of this study we prove proper max-point-tolerance graphs are asteroidal triple free and perfect. We also find proper max-point-tolerance graphs are equivalent to unit max-point-tolerance graphs. Further we note that MPTG (proper MPTG) and max-tolerance graphs (proper max-tolerance graphs) are incomparable. In conclusion we demonstrate relations between proper MPTG with other variants of MPTG and max-tolerance graphs.
Excluding a ladder
Published in Combinatorica, 42:405--432, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
A ladder is a $2 \times k$ grid graph. When does a graph class $\mathcal{C}$ exclude some ladder as a minor? We show that this is the case if and only if all graphs $G$ in $\mathcal{C}$ admit a proper vertex coloring with a bounded number of colors such that for every $2$-connected subgraph $H$ of $G$, there is a color that appears exactly once in $H$. This type of vertex coloring is a relaxation of the notion of centered coloring, where for every connected subgraph $H$ of $G$, there must be a color that appears exactly once in $H$. The minimum number of colors in a centered coloring of $G$ is the treedepth of $G$, and it is known that classes of graphs with bounded treedepth are exactly those that exclude a fixed path as a subgraph, or equivalently, as a minor. In this sense, the structure of graphs excluding a fixed ladder as a minor resembles the structure of graphs without long paths. Another similarity is as follows: It is an easy observation that every connected graph with two vertex-disjoint paths of length $k$ has a path of length $k+1$. We show that every $3$-connected graph which contains as a minor a union of sufficiently many vertex-disjoint copies of a $2 \times k$ grid has a $2 \times (k+1)$ grid minor. Our structural results have applications to poset dimension. We show that posets whose cover graphs exclude a fixed ladder as a minor have bounded dimension. This is a new step towards the goal of understanding which graphs are unavoidable as minors in cover graphs of posets with large dimension.

Excluded minors for the Klein Bottle I. Low connectivity case
Published • View PublicationBIB
Graphs that are critical (minimal excluded minors) for embeddability in surfaces are studied. In Part I we consider the structure of graphs with a 2-vertex-cut that are critical with respect to the Euler genus. A general theorem describing the building blocks is presented. These constituents, called hoppers and cascades, are classified for the case when Euler genus is small. As a consequence, the complete list of obstructions of connectivity 2 for embedding graphs into the Klein bottle is obtained. This is the first complete result about obstructions for embeddability of graphs in the Klein bottle, and the outcome is somewhat surprising in the sense that there are considerably fewer excluded minors than expected.

Excluded minors for the Klein Bottle II. Cascades
Published • View PublicationBIB
Graphs that are critical (minimal excluded minors) for embeddability in surfaces are studied. In Part I, it was shown that graphs that are critical for embeddings into surfaces of Euler genus $k$ or for embeddings into nonorientable surface of genus $k$ are built from 3-connected components, called hoppers and cascades. In Part II, all cascades for Euler genus 2 are classified. As a consequence, the complete list of obstructions of connectivity 2 for embedding graphs into the Klein bottle is obtained.
Module structure of the homology of right-angled Artin kernels
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 22 (2022) 2775-2803 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the module structure of the homology of Artin kernels, i.e., kernels of non-resonant characters from right-angled Artin groups onto the integer numbers, the module structure being with respect to the ring $\mathbb{K}[t^{\pm 1}]$, where $\mathbb{K}$ is a field of characteristic zero. Papadima and Suciu determined some part of this structure by means of the flag complex of the graph of the Artin group. In this work, we provide more properties of the torsion part of this module, e.g., the dimension of each primary part and the maximal size of Jordan forms (if we interpret the torsion structure in terms of a linear map). These properties are stated in terms of homology properties of suitable filtrations of the flag complex and suitable double covers of an associated toric complex.

Semi-dynamic Algorithms for Strongly Chordal Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
There is an extensive literature on dynamic algorithms for a large number of graph theoretic problems, particularly for all varieties of shortest path problems. Germane to this paper are a number fully dynamic algorithms that are known for chordal graphs. However, to the best of our knowledge no study has been done for the problem of dynamic algorithms for strongly chordal graphs. To address this gap, in this paper, we propose a semi-dynamic algorithm for edge-deletions and a semi-dynamic algorithm for edge-insertions in a strongly chordal graph, $G = (V, E)$, on $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. The query complexity of an edge-deletion is $O(d_u^2d_v^2 (n + m))$, where $d_u$ and $d_v$ are the degrees of the vertices $u$ and $v$ of the candidate edge $\{u, v\}$, while the query-complexity of an edge-insertion is $O(n^2)$.

On directed version of the Sauer-Spender Theorem
Let $D=(V,A)$ be a digraph of order $n$ and let $W$ be any subset of $V$. We define the minimum semi-degree of $W$ in $D$ to be $δ^0(W)=\mbox{min}\{δ^+(W),δ^-(W)\}$, where $δ^+(W)$ is the minimum out-degree of $W$ in $D$ and $δ^-(W)$ is the minimum in-degree of $W$ in $D$. Let $k$ be an integer with $k\geq 1$. In this paper, we prove that for any positive integer partition $|W|=\sum_{i=1}^{k}n_i$ with $n_i\geq 2$ for each $i$, if $δ^0(W)\geq \frac{3n-3}{4}$, then there are $k$ vertex disjoint cycles $C_1,\ldots,C_k$ in $D$ such that each $C_i$ contains exactly $n_i$ vertices of $W$. Moreover, the lower bound of $δ^0(W)$ can be improved to $\frac{n}{2}$ if $k=1$, and $\frac{n}{2}+|W|-1$ if $n\geq 2|W|$. The minimum semi-degree condition $δ^0(W)\geq \frac{3n-3}{4}$ is sharp in some sense and this result partially confirms the conjecture posed by Wang [Graphs and Combinatorics 16 (2000) 453-462]. It is also a directed version of the Sauer-Spender Theorem on vertex disjoint cycles in graphs [J. Combin. Theory B, 25 (1978) 295-302].

On a problem of Erdős about graphs whose size is the Turán number plus one
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider finite simple graphs. Given a graph $H$ and a positive integer $n,$ the Turán number of $H$ for the order $n,$ denoted ${\rm ex}(n,H),$ is the maximum size of a graph of order $n$ not containing $H$ as a subgraph. Erdős posed the following problem in 1990: "For which graphs $H$ is it true that every graph on $n$ vertices and ${\rm ex}(n,H)+1$ edges contains at least two $H$s? Perhaps this is always true." We solve the second part of this problem in the negative by proving that for every integer $k\ge 4,$ there exists a graph $H$ of order $k$ and at least two orders $n$ such that there exists a graph of order $n$ and size ${\rm ex}(n,H)+1$ which contains exactly one copy of $H.$ Denote by $C_4$ the $4$-cycle. We also prove that for every integer $n$ with $6\le n\le 11,$ there exists a graph of order $n$ and size ${\rm ex}(n,C_4)+1$ which contains exactly one copy of $C_4,$ but for $n=12$ or $n=13,$ the minimum number of copies of $C_4$ in a graph of order $n$ and size ${\rm ex}(n,C_4)+1$ is $2.$

On conditional connectivity of the Cartesian product of cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
The conditional $h$-vertex($h$-edge) connectivity of a connected graph $H$ of minimum degree $ k > h$ is the size of a smallest vertex(edge) set $F$ of $H$ such that $H - F$ is a disconnected graph of minimum degree at least $h.$ Let $G$ be the Cartesian product of $r\geq 1$ cycles, each of length at least four and let $h$ be an integer such that $0\leq h\leq 2r-2$. In this paper, we determine the conditional $h$-vertex-connectivity and the conditional $h$-edge-connectivity of the graph $G.$ We prove that both these connectivities are equal to $(2r-h)a_h^r$, where $a_h^r$ is the number of vertices of a smallest $h$-regular subgraph of $G.$

Rigid toric matrix Schubert varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a given permutation $π\in S_N$, Fulton proves that the matrix Schubert variety $\overline{X_π} \cong Y_π \times \mathbb{C}^q$ can be defined via certain rank conditions encoded in the Rothe diagram of $π$. In the case where $Y_π:=\text{TV}(σ_π)$ is toric (with respect to a $(\mathbb{C}^*)^{2N-1}$ action), we show that it can be described as an edge ideal of a bipartite graph $G^π$. We characterize the lower dimensional faces of the associated so-called edge cone $σ_π$ explicitly in terms of subgraphs of $G^π$ and present a combinatorial study for the first order deformations of $Y_π$. We prove that $Y_π$ is rigid if and only if the three-dimensional faces of $σ_π$ are all simplicial. Moreover, we reformulate this result in terms of Rothe diagram of $π$.

General upper bound on the game domination number
It is conjectured that the game domination number is at most $3n/5$ for every $n$-vertex graph which does not contain isolated vertices. It was proved in the recent years that the conjecture holds for several graph classes, including the class of forests and that of graphs with minimum degree at least two. Here we prove that the slightly bigger upper bound $5n/8$ is valid for every isolate-free graph.

Distance Matrix of Weighted Cactoid-type Digraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A strongly connected digraph is called a cactoid-type if each of its blocks is a digraph consisting of finitely many oriented cycles sharing a common directed path. In this article, we find the formula for the determinant of the distance matrix for weighted cactoid-type digraphs and find its inverse, whenever it exists. We also compute the determinant of the distance matrix for a class of unweighted and undirected graphs consisting of finitely many cycles, sharing a common path.

The Hidden Subgroup Problem for Universal Algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Hidden Subgroup Problem (HSP) is a computational problem which includes as special cases integer factorization, the discrete logarithm problem, graph isomorphism, and the shortest vector problem. The celebrated polynomial-time quantum algorithms for factorization and the discrete logarithm are restricted versions of a generic polynomial-time quantum solution to the HSP for abelian groups, but despite focused research no full solution has yet been found. We propose a generalization of the HSP to include arbitrary algebraic structures and analyze this new problem on powers of 2-element algebras. We prove a complete classification of every such power as quantum tractable (i.e. polynomial-time), classically tractable, quantum intractable, and classically intractable. In particular, we identify a class of algebras for which the generalized HSP exhibits super-polynomial speedup on a quantum computer compared to a classical one.

On the Ramsey-Turán density of triangles
Published in Combinatorica 42 (2022) no.1, 115-136 • View PublicationBIB
One of the oldest results in modern graph theory, due to Mantel, asserts that every triangle-free graphs on $n$ vertices has at most $\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor$ edges. About half a century later Andrásfai studied dense triangle-free graphs and proved that the largest triangle-free graphs on $n$ vertices without independent sets of size $αn$, where $2/5\le α< 1/2$, are blow-ups of the pentagon. More than 50 further years have elapsed since Andrásfai's work. In this article we make the next step towards understanding the structure of dense triangle-free graphs without large independent sets. Notably, we determine the maximum size of triangle-free graphs~$G$ on $n$ vertices with $α(G)\ge 3n/8$ and state a conjecture on the structure of the densest triangle-free graphs $G$ with $α(G) > n/3$. We remark that the case $α(G) \le n/3$ behaves differently, but due to the work of Brandt this situation is fairly well understood.

Avoidance couplings on non-complete graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A coupling of random walkers on the same finite graph, who take turns sequentially, is said to be an avoidance coupling if the walkers never collide. Previous studies of these processes have focused almost exclusively on complete graphs, in particular how many walkers an avoidance coupling can include. For other graphs, apart from special cases, it has been unsettled whether even two non-colliding simple random walkers can be coupled. In this article, we construct such a coupling on (i) any $d$-regular graph avoiding a fixed subgraph depending on $d$; and (ii) any square-free graph with minimum degree at least three. A corollary of the first result is that a uniformly random regular graph on $n$ vertices admits an avoidance coupling with high probability.

Three lectures on random proper colorings of $\mathbb{Z}^d$
A proper $q$-coloring of a graph is an assignment of one of $q$ colors to each vertex of the graph so that adjacent vertices are colored differently. Sample uniformly among all proper $q$-colorings of a large discrete cube in the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Does the random coloring obtained exhibit any large-scale structure? Does it have fast decay of correlations? We discuss these questions and the way their answers depend on the dimension $d$ and the number of colors $q$. The questions are motivated by statistical physics (anti-ferromagnetic materials, square ice), combinatorics (proper colorings, independent sets) and the study of random Lipschitz functions on a lattice. The discussion introduces a diverse set of tools, useful for this purpose and for other problems, including spatial mixing, entropy and coupling methods, Gibbs measures and their classification and refined contour analysis.
