Invariant differential derivations for reflection groups in positive characteristic
Published • View PublicationBIB
Much of the fascinating numerology surrounding finite reflection groups stems from Solomon's celebrated 1963 theorem describing invariant differential forms. Invariant differential derivations also exhibit interesting numerology over the complex numbers. We explore the analogous theory over arbitrary fields, in particular, when the characteristic of the underlying field divides the order of the acting reflection group and the conclusion of Solomon's Theorem may fail. Using results of Broer and Chuai, we give a Saito criterion (Jacobian criterion) for finding a basis of differential derivations invariant under a finite group that distinguishes certain cases over fields of characteristic 2. We show that the reflecting hyperplanes lie in a single orbit and demonstrate a duality of exponents and coexponents when the transvection root spaces of a reflection group are maximal. A set of basic derivations are used to construct a basis of invariant differential derivations with a twisted wedging in this case. We obtain explicit bases for the special linear groups SL(n,q) and general linear groups GL(n,q), and all groups in between.

The combinatorics of $N_\infty$ operads for $C_{qp^n}$ and $D_{p^n}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide a general recursive method for constructing transfer systems on finite lattices. Using this we calculate the number of homotopically distinct $N_\infty$ operads for dihedral groups $D_{p^n}$, $p > 2$ prime, and cyclic groups $C_{qp^n}$, $p \neq q$ prime. We then further display some of the beautiful combinatorics obtained by restricting to certain homotopically meaningful $N_\infty$ operads for these groups.
Almost Ramanujan Expanders from Arbitrary Expanders via Operator Amplification
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an efficient algorithm that transforms any bounded degree expander graph into another that achieves almost optimal (namely, near-quadratic, $d \leq 1/λ^{2+o(1)}$) trade-off between (any desired) spectral expansion $λ$ and degree $d$. Furthermore, the algorithm is local: every vertex can compute its new neighbors as a subset of its original neighborhood of radius $O(\log(1/λ))$. The optimal quadratic trade-off is known as the Ramanujan bound, so our construction gives almost Ramanujan expanders from arbitrary expanders. The locality of the transformation preserves structural properties of the original graph, and thus has many consequences. Applied to Cayley graphs, our transformation shows that any expanding finite group has almost Ramanujan expanding generators. Similarly, one can obtain almost optimal explicit constructions of quantum expanders, dimension expanders, monotone expanders, etc., from existing (suboptimal) constructions of such objects. Another consequence is a "derandomized" random walk on the original (suboptimal) expander with almost optimal convergence rate. Our transformation also applies when the degree is not bounded or the expansion is not constant. We obtain our results by a generalization of Ta-Shma's technique in his breakthrough paper [STOC 2017], used to obtain explicit almost optimal binary codes. Specifically, our spectral amplification extends Ta-Shma's analysis of bias amplification from scalars to matrices of arbitrary dimension in a very natural way. Curiously, while Ta-Shma's explicit bias amplification derandomizes a well-known probabilistic argument (underlying the Gilbert--Varshamov bound), there seems to be no known probabilistic (or other existential) way of achieving our explicit ("high-dimensional") spectral amplification.

On adjacency and (signless) Laplacian spectra of centralizer and co-centralizer graphs of some finite non-abelian groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a finite non abelian group. The centralizer graph of $G$ is a simple undirected graph $Γ_{cent}(G)$, whose vertices are the proper centralizers of $G$ and two vertices are adjacent if and only if their cardinalities are identical {\rm\cite{omer}}. The complement of the centralizer graph is called the co-centralizer graph. In this paper, we investigate the adjacency and (signless) Laplacian spectra of centralizer and co-centralizer graphs of some classes of finite non-abelian groups and obtain some conditions on a group so that the centralizer and co-centralizer graphs are adjacency, (signless) Laplacian integral.

Sequences of Trees and Higher-Order Renormalization Group Equations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a notion of higher order renormalization group equation and investigate when a sequence of trees satisfies such an equation. In the strongest sense, the sequence of trees satisfies a $k$th order renormalization group equation when applying any choice of Feynman rules results in a Green function satisfying a $k$th order renormalization group equation, and we characterize all such sequences of trees. We also make some comments on sequences of trees which require special choices of Feynman rules in order to satisfy a higher order renormalization group equation.

On the Automorphism Group of the Substructure Ordering of Finite Directed Graphs
We investigate the automorphism group of the substructure ordering of finite directed graphs. The second author conjectured that it is isomorphic to the 768-element group $(\mathbb{Z}_2^4 \times S_4)\rtimes_α \mathbb{Z}_2$. Though unable to prove it, we solidify this conjecture by showing that the automorphism group behaves as expected by the conjecture on the first few levels of the poset in question. With the use of computer calculation we analyze the first four levels holding 3160 directed graphs.

Counting nearest faraway flats for Coxeter chambers
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a finite Coxeter group $W$ and with two given conjugacy classes of parabolic subgroups $[X]$ and $[Y]$, we count those parabolic subgroups of $W$ in $[Y]$ that are full support, while simultaneously being simple extensions (i.e., extensions by a single reflection) of some standard parabolic subgroup of $W$ in $[X]$. The enumeration is given by a product formula that depends only on the two parabolic types. Our derivation is case-free and combines a geometric interpretation of the "full support" property with a double counting argument involving Crapo's beta invariant. As a corollary, this approach gives the first case-free proof of Chapoton's formula for the number of reflections of full support in a real reflection group $W$.

Pop, Crackle, Snap (and Pow): Some Facets of Shards
Reading cut the hyperplanes in a real central arrangement $\mathcal H$ into pieces called \emph{shards}, which reflect order-theoretic properties of the arrangement. We show that shards have a natural interpretation as certain generators of the fundamental group of the complement of the complexification of $\mathcal H$. Taking only positive expressions in these generators yields a new poset that we call the \emph{pure shard monoid}. When $\mathcal H$ is simplicial, its poset of regions is a lattice, so it comes equipped with a pop-stack sorting operator $\mathsf{Pop}$. In this case, we use $\mathsf{Pop}$ to define an embedding $\mathsf{Crackle}$ of Reading's shard intersection order into the pure shard monoid. When $\mathcal H$ is the reflection arrangement of a finite Coxeter group, we also define a poset embedding $\mathsf{Snap}$ of the shard intersection order into the positive braid monoid; in this case, our three maps are related by $\mathsf{Snap}=\mathsf{Crackle} \cdot \mathsf{Pop}$.

An analogue of Kida's formula in graph theory
Published in Pure & Applied Math. Quarterly, Vol. 21 (2025) No. 5, pp. 1853-1891 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\ell$ be a rational prime and let $p:Y\rightarrow X$ be a Galois cover of finite graphs whose Galois group is a finite $\ell$-group. Consider a $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$-tower above $X$ and its pullback along $p$. Assuming that all the graphs in the pullback are connected, one obtains a $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$-tower above $Y$. Under the assumption that the Iwasawa $μ$-invariant of the tower above $X$ vanishes, we prove a formula relating the Iwasawa $λ$-invariant of the $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$-tower above $X$ to the Iwasawa $λ$-invariant of the pullback. This formula is analogous to Kida's formula in classical Iwasawa theory. We present an application to the study of structural properties of certain noncommutative pro-$\ell$ towers of graphs, based on an analogy with classical results of Cuoco on the growth of Iwasawa invariants in $\mathbb{Z}_\ell^2$-extensions of number fields. Our investigations are illustrated by explicit examples.
Orbits of the class $\mathcal{O}_6$ of lines external with respect to the twisted cubic in $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the projective space $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$, we consider orbits of lines under the stabilizer group of the twisted cubic. In the literature, lines of $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$ are partitioned into classes, each of which is a union of line orbits. We propose an approach to obtain orbits of the class named $\mathcal{O}_6$, whose complete classification is an open problem. For all even and odd $q$ we describe a family of orbits of $\mathcal{O}_6$ and their stabilizer groups. The orbits of this family include an essential part of all $\mathcal{O}_6$ orbits.

3D domino tilings: irregular disks and connected components under flips
We consider three-dimensional domino tilings of cylinders $\mathcal{R}_N = \mathcal{D} \times [0,N]$ where $\mathcal{D} \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ is a fixed quadriculated disk and $N \in \mathbb{N}$. A domino is a $2 \times 1 \times 1$ brick. A flip is a local move in the space of tilings $\mathcal{T}(\mathcal{R}_N)$: remove two adjacent dominoes and place them back after a rotation. The twist is a flip invariant which associates an integer number to each tiling. For some disks $\mathcal{D}$, called regular, two tilings of $\mathcal{R}_N$ with the same twist can be joined by a sequence of flips once we add vertical space to the cylinder. We have that if $\mathcal{D}$ is regular then the size of the largest connected component under flips of $\mathcal{T}(\mathcal{R}_N)$ is $Θ(N^{-\frac{1}{2}}|\mathcal{T}(\mathcal{R}_N)|)$. The domino group $G_{\mathcal{D}}$ captures information of the space of tilings. A disk $\mathcal{D}$ is regular if and only if $G_{\mathcal{D}}$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z} \oplus \mathbb{Z}/(2)$; sufficiently large rectangles are regular. We prove that certain families of disks are irregular. We show that the existence of a bottleneck in a disk $\mathcal{D}$ often implies irregularity. In many, but not all, of these cases, we also prove that $\mathcal{D}$ is strongly irregular, i.e., that there exists a surjective homomorphism from $G_{\mathcal{D}}^+$ (a subgroup of index two of $G_{\mathcal{D}}$) to the free group of rank two. Moreover, we show that if $\mathcal{D}$ is strongly irregular then the cardinality of the largest connected component under flips of $\mathcal{T}(\mathcal{R}_N)$ is $O(c^N |\mathcal{T}(\mathcal{R}_N)|)$ for some $c \in (0,1)$.

Abelian sandpiles on Sierpinski gasket graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The aim of the current work is to investigate structural properties of the sandpile group of a special class of self-similar graphs. More precisely, we consider Abelian sandpiles on Sierpinski gasket graphs and for the choice of normal boundary conditions, we give a characterization of the identity element and a recursive description of the sandpile group. Finally, we consider Abelian sandpile Markov chains on the aforementioned graphs and we improve the existing bounds on the speed of convergence to stationarity.

Composite Community-Aware Diversified Influence Maximization with Efficient Approximation
Published in IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
Influence Maximization (IM) is a famous topic in mobile networks and social computing, which aims at finding a small subset of users to maximize the influence spread through online information cascade. Recently, some careful researchers paid attention to diversity of information dissemination, especially community-aware diversity, and formulated the diversified IM problem. The diversity is ubiquitous in a lot of real-world applications, but they are all based on a given community structure. In social networks, we can form heterogeneous community structures for the same group of users according to different metrics. Therefore, how to quantify the diversity based on multiple community structures is an interesting question. In this paper, we propose the Composite Community-Aware Diversified IM (CC-DIM) problem, which aims at selecting a seed set to maximize the influence spread and the composite diversity over all possible community structures under consideration. To address the NP-hardness of CC-DIM problem, we adopt the technique of reverse influence sampling and design a random Generalized Reverse Reachable (G-RR) set to estimate the objective function. The composition of a random G-RR set is much more complex than the RR set used for the IM problem, which will lead to inefficiency of traditional sampling-based approximation algorithms. Because of this, we further propose a two-stage algorithm, Generalized HIST (G-HIST). It can not only return a $(1-1/e-\varepsilon)$ approximate solution with at least $(1-δ)$ probability, but also improve the efficiency of sampling and ease the difficulty of searching by significantly reducing the average size of G-RR sets. Finally, we evaluate our G-HIST on real datasets against existing algorithms. The experimental results show the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm and its superiority over other baseline algorithms.

Transversals in quasirandom latin squares
Published • View PublicationBIB
A transversal in an $n \times n$ latin square is a collection of $n$ entries not repeating any row, column, or symbol. Kwan showed that almost every $n \times n$ latin square has $\bigl((1 + o(1)) n / e^2\bigr)^n$ transversals as $n \to \infty$. Using a loose variant of the circle method we sharpen this to $(e^{-1/2} + o(1)) n!^2 / n^n$. Our method works for all latin squares satisfying a certain quasirandomness condition, which includes both random latin squares with high probability as well as multiplication tables of quasirandom groups.

$\mathbb{Z}$-local system cohomology of hyperplane arrangements and a Cohen-Dimca-Orlik type theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
Local system cohomology groups of the complements of hyperplane arrangements have played an important role in the theory of hypergeometric integrals, the topology of Milnor fibers and covering spaces. One of the important theorems is the vanishing theorem for generic $\mathbb{C}$-local systems which goes back to Aomoto's work. Later, Cohen, Dimca, and Orlik proved a stronger version of the vanishing theorem. In this paper, we prove a Cohen-Dimca-Orlik type theorem for $\mathbb{Z}$-local systems.
Betti numbers and torsions in homology groups of double coverings
Published • View PublicationBIB
Papadima and Suciu proved an inequality between the ranks of the cohomology groups of the Aomoto complex with finite field coefficients and the twisted cohomology groups, and conjectured that they are actually equal for certain cases associated with the Milnor fiber of the arrangement. Recently, an arrangement (the icosidodecahedral arrangement) with the following two peculiar properties was found: (i) the strict version of Papadima-Suciu's inequality holds, and (ii) the first integral homology of the Milnor fiber has a non-trivial $2$-torsion. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between these two properties for double covering spaces. We prove that (i) and (ii) are actually equivalent.

Existence of $λ$-Fold Non-zero sum Heffter arrays through local considerations
In [12] was introduced, for cyclic groups, the class of partially filled arrays of the non-zero sum Heffter array that are, as the Heffter arrays, related to difference families, graph decompositions, and biembeddings. Here we generalize this definition to any finite groups. Given a subgroup $J$ of order $t$ of a group $G$, a $λ$-fold non-zero sum Heffter array over $G$ relative to $J$, $^λ\mathrm{N}\mathrm{H}_t(m,n; h,k)$, is an $m \times n$ p. f. array with entries in $G$ such that: each row contains $h$ filled cells and each column contains $k$ filled cells; for every $x\in G\setminus J$, the sum of the occurrence of $x$ and $-x$ is $λ$; the sum of the elements in every row and column is, following the natural orderings from left to right for the rows and from top to bottom for the columns, different from $0$ (in $G$). In [12], there was presented a complete, probabilistic, solution for the existence problem in case $λ=1$ and $G=\mathbb{Z}_v$ that is the starting point of this investigation. In this paper, we will consider the existence problem for a generic value of $λ$ and a generic finite group $G$, and we present an almost complete solution to this problem. In particular, we will prove, through local considerations (inspired by Lovász Local Lemma), that there exists a $λ$-fold non-zero sum Heffter array over $G$ relative to $J$ whenever the trivial necessary conditions are satisfied and $|G|=v\geq 41$. This value can be turned down to $29$ in case the array does not contain empty cells. Finally, we will show that these arrays give rise to biembeddings of multigraphs into orientable surfaces and we provide new infinite families of such embeddings.

Whitney Numbers of Partial Dowling Lattices
The Dowling lattice $Q_n(\mathfrak{G})$, $\mathfrak{G}$ a finite group, generalizes the geometric lattice generated by all vectors, over a field, with at most two nonzero components. Abstractly, it is a fundamental object in the classification of finite matroids. Constructively, it is the frame matroid of a certain gain graph known as $\mathfrak{G}{\cdot}K_n^{(V)}$. Its Whitney numbers of the first kind enter into several important formulas. Ravagnani suggested and partially proved that these numbers of $Q_n(\mathfrak{G})$ and higher-weight generalizations are polynomial functions of $|\mathfrak{G}|$. We give a simple proof for $Q_n(\mathfrak{G})$ and its generalization to a wider class of gain graphs and biased graphs, and we determine the degrees and coefficients of the polynomials.

Multiple Partition Structures and Harmonic Functions on Branching Graphs
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 153 (2024), Paper No.102617,49 pp • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study multiple partition structures which are sequences of probability measures on families of Young diagrams subjected to a consistency condition. The multiple partition structures are generalizations of Kingman's partition structures, and are motivated by a problem of population genetics. They are related to harmonic functions and coherent systems of probability measures on a certain branching graph. The vertices of this graph are multiple Young diagrams (or multiple partitions), and the edges depend on the Jack parameter. Our main result establishes a bijective correspondence between the set of harmonic functions on the graph and probability measures on the generalized Thoma set. The correspondence is determined by a canonical integral representation of harmonic functions. As a consequence we obtain a representation theorem for multiple partition structures. We give an example of a multiple partition structure which is expected to be relevant for a model of population genetics for the genetic variation of a sample of gametes from a large population. Namely, we construct a probability measure on the wreath product of a finite group with the symmetric group. The constructed probability measure defines a multiple partition structure which is a generalization of the Ewens partition structure studied by Kingman. We show that this multiple partition structure can be represented in terms of a multiple analogue of the Poisson-Dirichlet distribution called the multiple Poisson-Dirichlet distribution in the paper.
