Twin-width II: small classes

The twin-width of a graph $G$ is the minimum integer $d$ such that $G$ has a $d$-contraction sequence, that is, a sequence of $|V(G)|-1$ iterated vertex identifications for which the overall maximum number of red edges incident to a single vertex is at most $d$, where a red edge appears between two sets of identified vertices if they are not homogeneous in $G$. We show that if a graph admits a $d$-contraction sequence, then it also has a linear-arity tree of $f(d)$-contractions, for some function $f$. First this permits to show that every bounded twin-width class is small, i.e., has at most $n!c^n$ graphs labeled by $[n]$, for some constant $c$. This unifies and extends the same result for bounded treewidth graphs [Beineke and Pippert, JCT '69], proper subclasses of permutations graphs [Marcus and Tardos, JCTA '04], and proper minor-free classes [Norine et al., JCTB '06]. The second consequence is an $O(\log n)$-adjacency labeling scheme for bounded twin-width graphs, confirming several cases of the implicit graph conjecture. We then explore the "small conjecture" that, conversely, every small hereditary class has bounded twin-width. Inspired by sorting networks of logarithmic depth, we show that $\log_{Θ(\log \log d)}n$-subdivisions of $K_n$ (a small class when $d$ is constant) have twin-width at most $d$. We obtain a rather sharp converse with a surprisingly direct proof: the $\log_{d+1}n$-subdivision of $K_n$ has twin-width at least $d$. Secondly graphs with bounded stack or queue number (also small classes) have bounded twin-width. Thirdly we show that cubic expanders obtained by iterated random 2-lifts from $K_4$~[Bilu and Linial, Combinatorica '06] have bounded twin-width, too. We suggest a promising connection between the small conjecture and group theory. Finally we define a robust notion of sparse twin-width and discuss how it compares with other sparse classes.

In the first part of this letter it will be shown that the post-Lie Magnus expansion can be interpreted as a crossed morphism between two (local) Lie group. The second part will be devoted to present two combinatorial methods, both based on special tubings on planar trees, to compute the coefficients of this remarkable formal series.

In this paper, we present the results of a computer investigation of asymptotics for maximum dimensions of linear and projective representations of the symmetric group. This problem reduces to the investigation of standard and strict Young diagrams of maximum dimensions. We constructed some sequences for both standard and strict Young diagrams with extremely large dimensions. The conjecture that the limit of normalized dimensions exists was proposed 30 years ago [A.~M.~Vershik and S.~V.~Kerov, 1985] and has not been proved yet. We studied the growth and oscillations of the normalized dimension function in sequences of Young diagrams. Our approach is based on analyzing finite differences of their normalized dimensions. This analysis also allows us to give much more precise estimation of the limit constants.

Let A be a finite subset of an abelian group (G, +). Let h $\ge$ 2 be an integer. If |A| $\ge$ 2 and the cardinality |hA| of the h-fold iterated sumset hA = A + $\times$ $\times$ $\times$ + A is known, what can one say about |(h -- 1)A| and |(h + 1)A|? It is known that |(h -- 1)A| $\ge$ |hA| (h--1)/h , a consequence of Pl{ü}nnecke's inequality. Here we improve this bound with a new approach. Namely, we model the sequence |hA| h$\ge$0 with the Hilbert function of a standard graded algebra. We then apply Macaulay's 1927 theorem on the growth of Hilbert functions, and more specifically a recent condensed version of it. Our bound implies |(h -- 1)A| $\ge$ $θ$(x, h) |hA| (h--1)/h for some factor $θ$(x, h) > 1, where x is a real number closely linked to |hA|. Moreover, we show that $θ$(x, h) asymptotically tends to e $\approx$ 2.718 as |A| grows and h lies in a suitable range varying with |A|.
Interval parking functions

Interval parking functions (IPFs) are a generalization of ordinary parking functions in which each car is willing to park only in a fixed interval of spaces. Each interval parking function can be expressed as a pair $(a,b)$, where $a$ is a parking function and $b$ is a dual parking function. We say that a pair of permutations $(x,y)$ is \emph{reachable} if there is an IPF $(a,b)$ such that $x,y$ are the outcomes of $a,b$, respectively, as parking functions. Reachability is reflexive and antisymmetric, but not in general transitive. We prove that its transitive closure, the \emph{pseudoreachability order}, is precisely the bubble-sort order on the symmetric group $\Sym_n$, which can be expressed in terms of the normal form of a permutation in the sense of du~Cloux; in particular, it is isomorphic to the product of chains of lengths $2,\dots,n$. It is thus seen to be a special case of Armstrong's sorting order, which lies between the Bruhat and (left) weak orders.

Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field with $q$ elements, $n\geq2$ a positive integer, $\mathbb{V}_0$ a $n$-dimensional vector space over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and $\mathbb{T}_0$ the set of all linear functionals from $\mathbb{V}_0$ to $\mathbb{F}_q$. Let $\mathbb{V}=\mathbb{V}_0\setminus\{0\}$ and $\mathbb{T}=\mathbb{T}_0\setminus\{0\}$. The \emph{linear functional graph} of $\mathbb{V}_0$ dented by $\digamma(\mathbb{V})$, is an undirected bipartite graph, whose vertex set $V$ is partitioned into two sets as $V=\mathbb{V}\cup \mathbb{T}$ and two vertices $v\in \mathbb{V}$ and $f\in \mathbb{T}$ are adjacent if and only if $f$ sends $v$ to the zero element of $\mathbb{F}_q$ (i.e. $f(v)=0$). In this paper, the structure of all automorphisms of this graph is characterized and formolized. Also the cardinal number of automorphisms group
for this graph is determined.
Signed Countings of Type B and D Permutations and $t,q$-Euler numbers
A classical result states that the parity balance of the number of excedances of all permutations (derangements, respectively) of length $n$ is the Euler number. In 2010, Josuat-Vergès gives a $q$-analogue with $q$ representing the number of crossings. We extend this result to the permutations (derangements, respectively) of type B and D. It turns out that the signed countings are related to the derivative polynomials of $\tan$ and $\sec$.
Springer numbers defined by Springer can be regarded as an analogue of Euler numbers defined on every Coxeter group. In 1992 Arnol'd showed that the Springer numbers of classical types A, B, D count various combinatorial objects, called snakes. In 1999 Hoffman found that derivative polynomials of $\sec x$ and $\tan x$ and their subtraction evaluated at certain values count exactly the number of snakes of certain types. Then Josuat-Vergès studied the $(t,q)$-analogs of derivative polynomials $Q_n(t,q)$, $R_n(t,q)$ and showed that as setting $q=1$ the polynomials are enumerators of snakes with respect to the number of sign-changing. Our second result is to find combinatorial interpretations of $Q_n(t,q)$ and $R_n(t,q)$ as enumerators of the snakes, although the outcome is somewhat messy.

We extend our $\imath$Hall algebra construction from acyclic to arbitrary $\imath$quivers, where the $\imath$quiver algebras are infinite-dimensional 1-Gorenstein in general. Then we establish an injective homomorphism from the universal $\imath$quantum group of Kac-Moody type arising from quantum symmetric pairs to the $\imath$Hall algebra associated to a virtually acyclic $\imath$quiver.

In this paper we investigate combinatorial constructions for $w$-cyclic holely group divisible packings with block size three (briefly by $3$-HGDPs). For any positive integers $u,v,w$ with $u\equiv0,1~(\bmod~3)$, the exact number of base blocks of a maximum $w$-cyclic $3$-HGDP of type $(u,w^v)$ is determined. This result is used to determine the exact number of codewords in a maximum three-dimensional $(u\times v\times w,3,1)$ optical orthogonal code with at most one optical pulse per spatial plane and per wavelength plane.
Normal Reflection Subgroups
We study normal reflection subgroups of complex reflection groups. Our point of view leads to a refinement of a theorem of Orlik and Solomon to the effect that the generating function for fixed-space dimension over a reflection group is a product of linear factors involving generalized exponents. Our refinement gives a uniform proof and generalization of a recent theorem of the second author.

The Sato-Tate distributions for genus 2 curves (conjecturally) describe the statistics of numbers of rational points on the curves. In this paper, we explicitly compute the auto-correlation functions of Sato-Tate distributions for genus 2 curves as sums of irreducible characters of symplectic groups. Our computations bring about families of identities involving irreducible characters of symplectic groups $Sp(2m)$ for all $m \in \mathbb Z_{\ge 1}$, which have interest in their own rights.
On complicial homotopy monoids
For a Kan complex with a vertex, we have the notion of its simplicial homotopy groups. In this paper, for a weak complicial set in the sense of Verity with a vertex, we construct monoids which are a generalization of simplicial homotopy groups.

In a graph $Γ$ with vertex set $V$, a subset $C$ of $V$ is called an $(a,b)$-perfect set if every vertex in $C$ has exactly $a$ neighbors in $C$ and every vertex in $V\setminus C$ has exactly $b$ neighbors in $C$, where $a$ and $b$ are nonnegative integers. In the literature $(0,1)$-perfect sets are known as perfect codes and $(1,1)$-perfect sets are known as total perfect codes. In this paper we prove that, for any finite group $G$, if a non-trivial normal subgroup $H$ of $G$ is a perfect code in some Cayley graph of $G$, then it is also an $(a,b)$-perfect set in some Cayley graph of $G$ for any pair of integers $a$ and $b$ with $0\leqslant a\leqslant|H|-1$ and $0\leqslant b\leqslant |H|$ such that $\gcd(2,|H|-1)$ divides $a$. A similar result involving total perfect codes is also proved in the paper.

We recall the notions of Clifford and Clifford-like parallelisms in a $3$-dimensional projective double space. In a previous paper the authors proved that the linear part of the full automorphism group of a Clifford parallelism is the same for all Clifford-like parallelisms which can be associated to it. In this paper, instead, we study the action of such group on parallel classes thus achieving our main results on characterisation of the Clifford parallelisms among Clifford-like ones.
A geometric characterisation of subvarieties of the standard E_6-variety related to the ternions, degenerate split quaternions and sextonions over arbitrary fields
The main achievement of this paper is a geometric characterisation of certain subvarieties of the Cartan variety (the standard projective variety associated to the split exceptional group of Lie type E_6) over an arbitrary field K. The characterised varieties arise as Veronese representations of certain ring projective planes over quadratic subalgebras of the split octonions over K (among which the sextonions, a 6-dimensional non-associative algebra). We describe how these varieties are linked to the Freudenthal-Tits magic square, and discuss how they would even fit in, when also allowing the sextonions and other "degenerate composition algebras" as the algebras used to construct the square.

The noncommutative Gurarij space $\mathbb{\mathbb{\mathbb{NG}}}$, initially defined by Oikhberg, is a canonical object in the theory of operator spaces. As the Fraïssé limit of the class of finite-dimensional nuclear operator spaces, it can be seen as the noncommutative analogue of the classical Gurarij Banach space. In this paper, we prove that the automorphism group of $\mathbb{\mathbb{NG}}$ is extremely amenable, i.e.\ any of its actions on compact spaces has a fixed point. The proof relies on the Dual Ramsey Theorem, and a version of the Kechris--Pestov--Todorcevic correspondence in the setting of operator spaces.
Recent work of Davidson and Kennedy, building on previous work of Arveson, Effros, Farenick, Webster, and Winkler, among others, shows that nuclear operator systems can be seen as the noncommutative analogue of Choquet simplices. The analogue of the Poulsen simplex in this context is the matrix state space $\mathbb{NP}$ of the Fraïssé limit $A(\mathbb{NP})$ of the class of finite-dimensional nuclear operator systems. We show that the canonical action of the automorphism group of $\mathbb{NP}$ on the compact set $\mathbb{NP}_1$ of unital linear functionals on $A(\mathbb{NP})$ is minimal and it factors onto any minimal action, whence providing a description of the universal minimal flow of \textrm{Aut}$\left( \mathbb{NP}% \right) $.

We consider a $d$-dimensional well-formed weighted projective space $\mathbb{P}(\overline{w})$ as a toric variety associated with a fan $Σ(\overline{w})$ in $N_{\overline{w}} \otimes \mathbb{N}$ whose $1$-dimensional cones are spanned by primitive vectors $v_0, v_1, \ldots, v_d \in N_{\overline{w}}$ generating a lattice $N_{\overline{w}}$ and satisfying the linear relation $\sum_i w_i v_i =0$. For any fixed dimension $d$, there exist only finitely many weight vectors $\overline{w} = (w_0, \ldots, w_d)$ such that $\mathbb{P}(\overline{w})$ contains a quasi-smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurface $X_w$ defined by a transverse weighted homogeneous polynomial $W$ of degree $w = \sum_{i=0}^d w_i$. Using a formula of Vafa for the orbifold Euler number $χ_{\rm orb}(X_w)$, we show that for any quasi-smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurface $X_w$ the number $(-1)^{d-1}χ_{\rm orb}(X_w)$ equals the stringy Euler number $χ_{\rm str}(X_{\overline{w}}^*)$ of Calabi-Yau compactifications $X_{\overline{w}}^*$ of affine toric hypersurfaces $Z_{\overline{w}}$ defined by non-degenerate Laurent polynomials $f_{\overline{w}} \in \mathbb{C}[N_{\overline{w}}]$ with Newton polytope $\text{conv}(\{v_0, \ldots, v_d\})$. In the moduli space of Laurent polynomials $f_{\overline{w}}$ there always exists a special point $f_{\overline{w}}^0$ defining a mirror $X_{\overline{w}}^*$ with a $\mathbb{Z}/w\mathbb{Z}$-symmetry group such that $X_{\overline{w}}^*$ is birational to a quotient of a Fermat hypersurface via a Shioda map.

For a fixed permutation $σ\in S_k$, let $N_σ$ denote the function which counts occurrences of $σ$ as a pattern in permutations from $S_n$. We study the expected value (and $d$-th moments) of $N_σ$ on conjugacy classes of $S_n$ and prove that the irreducible character support of these class functions stabilizes as $n$ grows. This says that there is a single polynomial in the variables $n, m_1, \ldots, m_{dk}$ which computes these moments on any conjugacy class (of cycle type $1^{m_1}2^{m_2}\cdots$) of any symmetric group. This result generalizes results of Hultman and of Gill, who proved the cases $(d,k)=(1,2)$ and $(1,3)$ using ad hoc methods. Our proof is, to our knowledge, the first application of partition algebras to the study of permutation patterns.

Aguiar and Mahajan introduced a cohomology theory for the twisted coalgebras of Joyal, with particular interest in the computation of their second cohomology group, which gives rise to their deformations. We use the Koszul duality theory between twisted algebras and coalgebras on the twisted coalgebra that gives rise to their cohomology theory to give a new alternative description of it which, in particular, allows for its effective computation. We compute it completely in various examples, including those proposed by Aguiar and Mahajan, and obtain structural results: in particular, we study its multiplicative structure and provide a Künneth formula.

Given a binary quasigroup $G$ of order $n$, a $d$-iterated quasigroup $G[d]$ is the $(d+1)$-ary quasigroup equal to the $d$-times composition of $G$ with itself. The Cayley table of every $d$-ary quasigroup is a $d$-dimensional latin hypercube. Transversals and diagonals in multiary quasigroups are defined so as to coincide with those in the corresponding latin hypercube.
We prove that if a group $G$ of order $n$ satisfies the Hall--Paige condition, then the number of transversals in $G[d]$ is equal to $ \frac{n!}{ |G'| n^{n-1}} \cdot n!^{d} (1 + o(1))$ for large $d$, where $G'$ is the commutator subgroup of $G$. For a general quasigroup $G$, we obtain similar estimations on the numbers of transversals and near transversals in $G[d]$ and develop a method for counting diagonals of other types in iterated quasigroups.
