Group-Graph Reciprocal Pairs
In a 2018 paper, Cameron and Semeraro posed the problem of finding all group-graph reciprocal pairs. In this paper, we make a significant contribution to finding all such pairs. A group and graph form a reciprocal pair if they satisfy the relation $$P_{Γ,G}(x)=(-1)^nF_G(-x)$$ where $P_{Γ,G}(x)$ is the orbital chromatic polynomial of a graph $Γ$ and $F_G(x)$ is the cycle polynomial of a finite permutation group. We define a set of graphs to be \textit{$k$-stars} and prove that they satisfy a reciprocality relation with some group depending on $k$. These graphs are comprised of a complete graph with $k$ vertices and a further $α$ `points' which are only connected to each vertex in the centre. This group is a subgroup of $S_k\times S_α$, which is the automorphism group of a \textit{$k$-star} and $α$ is the number of points on the star. We conjecture a list of group-graph reciprocal pairs.
Eulerian Central Limit Theorems and Carlitz identities in positive elements of Classical Weyl Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Central Limit Theorems are known for the Eulerian statistic "descent" (or "excedance") in the symmetric group $\SSS_n$. Recently, Fulman, Kim, Lee and Petersen gave a Central Limit Theorem for "descent" over the alternating group $\AAA_n$ and also gave a Carlitz identity in $\AAA_n$ using descents. In this paper, we give a Central Limit Theorem in $\AAA_n$ involving excedances. We extend these to the positive elements in type B and type D Coxeter groups. Boroweic and Młotkowski enumerated type B descents over $\DD_n$, the type D Coxeter group and gave similar results. We refine their results for both the positive and negative part of $\DD_n$. Our results are a consequence of signed enumeration over these subsets.

L^2-Betti numbers arising from the lamplighter group
Published • View PublicationBIB
We apply a construction developed in a previous paper by the authors in order to obtain a formula which enables us to compute $\ell^2$-Betti numbers coming from a family of group algebras representable as crossed product algebras. As an application, we obtain a whole family of irrational $\ell^2$-Betti numbers arising from the lamplighter group algebra $K[\mathbb{Z}_2 \wr \mathbb{Z}]$, being $K$ a subfield of the complex numbers closed under complex conjugation. This procedure is constructive, in the sense that one has an explicit description of the elements realizing such irrational numbers. This extends the work made by Grabowski, who first computed irrational $\ell^2$-Betti numbers from the algebras $\mathbb{Q}[\mathbb{Z}_n \wr \mathbb{Z}]$, where $n \geq 2$ is a natural number. We also apply the techniques developed to the (generalized) odometer algebra $\mathcal{O}(\overline{n})$, where $\overline{n}$ is a supernatural number. We compute its $*$-regular closure, and this allows us to fully characterize the set of $\ell^2$-Betti numbers arising from $\mathcal{O}(\overline{n})$.

Group inverses of $\{0,1\}$-triangular matrices and Fibonacci numbers
A number $s$ is the sum of the entries of the inverse of an $n \times n, (n \geq 3)$ upper triangular matrix with entries from the set $\{0, 1\}$ if and only if $s$ is an integer lying between $2-F_{n-1}$ and $2+F_{n-1}$, where $F_n$ is the $n$th Fibonacci number. A generalization of the sufficient condition above to singular, group invertible matrices is presented.

Statistics of finite degree covers of torus knot complements
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the first part of this paper, we determine the asymptotic subgroup growth of the fundamental group of a torus knot complement. In the second part, we use this to study random finite degree covers of torus knot complements. We determine their Benjamini-Schramm limit and the linear growth rate of the Betti numbers of these covers. All these results generalise to a larger class of lattices in $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})\times \mathbb{R}$. As a by-product of our proofs, we obtain analogous limit theorems for high degree random covers of non-uniform Fuchsian lattices with torsion.

On fixity of arc-transitive graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The relative fixity of a permutation group is the maximum proportion of the points fixed by a non-trivial element of the group and the relative fixity of a graph is the relative fixity of its automorphism group, viewed as a permutation group on the vertex-set of the graph. We prove in this paper that the relative fixity of connected $2$-arc-transitive graphs of a fixed valence tends to $0$ as the number of vertices grows to infinity. We prove the same result for the class of arc-transitive graphs of a fixed prime valence, and more generally, for any class of arc-transitive locally-$L$ graphs, where $L$ is a fixed quasiprimitive graph-restrictive permutation group.

Pertfect matching and zero-sum 3-magic labeling
A mapping $l : E(G) \rightarrow A$, where $A$ is an abelian group which written additively, is called a labeling of the graph $G$. For every positive integer $h \geqslant 2$, a graph $G$ is said to be zero-sum $h$-magic if there is an edge labeling $l$ from $E(G)$ into $\mathbb{Z}_{h} \backslash \{0\}$ such that $s(v) = \sum_{uv\in E(G)}l(uv) = 0$ for every vertex $v \in V(G)$. In 2014, Saieed Akbari, Farhad Rahmati and Sanaz Zare conjectured that every 5-regular graph admits a zero-sum $3$-magic labeling. In this paper, we obtained that every 5-regular graph with every edge contains in a triangle must have a perfect matching, and admits a zero-sum 3-magic labeling, which partially confirms this conjecture.

A character approach to directed genus distribution of graphs: the bipartite single-black-vertex case
Published in Discrete Math. 345(6), 2022, article 112833 • View PublicationBIB
Given an Eulerian digraph, we consider the genus distribution of its face-oriented embeddings. We prove that such distribution is log-concave for two families of Eulerian digraphs, thus giving a positive answer for these families to a question asked in Bonnington, Conder, Morton and McKenna (2002). Our proof uses real-rooted polynomials and the representation theory of the symmetric group $\mathbb{S}_n$. The result is also extended to some factorizations of the identity in $\mathbb{S}_n$ that are rotation systems of some families of one-face constellations.

Two new families of non-CCA groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We determine two new infinite families of Cayley graphs that admit colour-preserving automorphisms that do not come from the group action. By definition, this means that these Cayley graphs fail to have the CCA (Cayley Colour Automorphism) property, and the corresponding infinite families of groups also fail to have the CCA property. The families of groups consist of the direct product of any dihedral group of order $2n$ where $n \ge 3$ is odd, with either itself, or the cyclic group of order $n$. In particular, this family of examples includes the smallest non-CCA group that had not fit into any previous family of known non-CCA groups.

Gelfand-Kirillov dimensions and associated varieties of highest weight modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present a uniform formula of Lusztig's $ \mathbf{a}$-functions on classical Weyl groups. Then we obtain an efficient algorithm for the Gelfand-Kirillov dimensions of simple highest weight modules of classical Lie algebras, whose highest weight is not necessarily regular or integral. To deal with type $ D $, we prove an interesting property about domino tableaux by introducing an invariant, called the hollow tableau. As an application, the associated varieties of all the simple highest weight Harish-Chandra modules are explicitly determined, including the exceptional cases.

Two families of graphs that are Cayley on nonisomorphic groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
A number of authors have studied the question of when a graph can be represented as a Cayley graph on more than one nonisomorphic group. The work to date has focussed on a few special situations: when the groups are $p$-groups; when the groups have order $pq$; when the Cayley graphs are normal; or when the groups are both abelian. In this paper, we construct two infinite families of graphs, each of which is Cayley on an abelian group and a nonabelian group. These families include the smallest examples of such graphs that had not appeared in other results.

Infinite co-minimal pairs in the integers and integral lattices
Published in Combinatorial and Additive Number Theory IV. CANT 2020. Springer Proceedings in Mathematics & Statistics, vol 347 • View PublicationBIB
Given two nonempty subsets $A, B$ of a group $G$, they are said to form a co-minimal pair if $A \cdot B = G$, and $A' \cdot B \subsetneq G$ for any $\emptyset \neq A' \subsetneq A$ and $A\cdot B' \subsetneq G$ for any $\emptyset \neq B' \subsetneq B$. In this article, we show several new results on co-minimal pairs in the integers and the integral lattices. We prove that for any $d\geq 1$, the group $\mathbb{Z}^{2d}$ admits infinitely many automorphisms such that for each such automorphism $σ$, there exists a subset $A$ of $\mathbb{Z}^{2d}$ such that $A$ and $σ(A)$ form a co-minimal pair. The existence and construction of co-minimal pairs in the integers with both the subsets $A$ and $B$ ($A\neq B$) of infinite cardinality was unknown. We show that such pairs exist and explicitly construct these pairs satisfying a number of algebraic properties.

Strong Gelfand subgroups of $F\wr S_n$
Published in Internat. J. Math., 32 (2021), no. 2, 2150010 • View PublicationBIB
The multiplicity-free subgroups (strong Gelfand subgroups) of wreath products are investigated. Various useful reduction arguments are presented. In particular, we show that for every finite group $F$, the wreath product $F\wr S_λ$, where $S_λ$ is a Young subgroup, is multiplicity-free if and only if $λ$ is a partition with at most two parts, the second part being 0,1, or 2. Furthermore, we classify all multiplicity-free subgroups of hyperoctahedral groups. Along the way, we derive various decomposition formulas for the induced representations from some special subgroups of hyperoctahedral groups.

The explicit formula for Gauss-Jordan elimination and error analysis
The explicit formula for the elements of the successive intermediate matrices of the Gauss-Jordan elimination procedure for the solution of systems of linear equations is applied to error analysis. Stability conditions in terms of relative uncertainty and size of determinants are given such that the Gauss-Jordan procedure leads to a solution respecting the original imprecisions in the right-hand member. The solution is the same as given by Cramer's Rule. Imprecisions are modelled by scalar neutrices, which are convex groups of (nonstandard) real numbers. The resulting calculation rules extend informal error calculus, and permit to keep track of the errors at every stage.

Fibonacci groups, F(2,n), are hyperbolic for n odd and n >= 11
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the Fibonacci group, F(2,n), for n odd and n >= 11 is hyperbolic. We do this by applying a curvature argument to an arbitrary van Kampen diagram of F(2,n) and show that it satisfies a linear isoperimetric inequality. It then follows that F(2, n) is hyperbolic.

Groups for which it is easy to detect graphical regular representations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We say that a finite group G is "DRR-detecting" if, for every subset S of G, either the Cayley digraph Cay(G,S) is a digraphical regular representation (that is, its automorphism group acts regularly on its vertex set) or there is a nontrivial group automorphism phi of G such that phi(S) = S. We show that every nilpotent DRR-detecting group is a p-group, but that the wreath product of two cyclic groups of order p is not DRR-detecting, for every odd prime p. We also show that if G and H are nontrivial groups that admit a digraphical regular representation and either gcd(|G|,|H|) = 1, or H is not DRR-detecting, then the direct product G x H is not DRR-detecting. Some of these results also have analogues for graphical regular representations.

Some unexpected properties of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
We are interested in identities between Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, and hence in comparing different tensor product decompositions of the irreducible modules of the linear group GL n (C). A family of partitions-called near-rectangular-is defined, and we prove a stability result which basically asserts that the decomposition of the tensor product of two representations associated to near-rectangular partitions does not depend on n. Given a partition $λ$, of length at most n, denote by V n ($λ$) the associated simple GL n (C)-module. We conjecture that, if $λ$ is near-rectangular and $μ$ any partition, the decompositions of V n ($λ$) $\otimes$ V n ($μ$) and V n ($λ$) * $\otimes$ V n ($μ$) coincide modulo a mysterious bijection. We prove this conjecture if $μ$ is also near-rectangular and report several computer-assisted computations which reinforce our conjecture.

Babai's conjecture for high-rank classical groups with random generators
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G = \mathrm{SCl}_n(q)$ be a quasisimple classical group with $n$ large, and let $x_1, \dots, x_k \in G$ random, where $k \geq q^C$. We show that the diameter of the resulting Cayley graph is bounded by $q^2 n^{O(1)}$ with probability $1 - o(1)$. In the particular case $G = \mathrm{SL}_n(p)$ with $p$ a prime of bounded size, we show that the same holds for $k = 3$.
On the distribution of the major index on standard Young tableaux
The study of permutation and partition statistics is a classical topic in enumerative combinatorics. The major index statistic on permutations was introduced a century ago by Percy MacMahon in his seminal works. In this extended abstract, we study the well-known generalization of the major index to standard Young tableaux. We present several new results. In one direction, we introduce and study two partial orders on the standard Young tableaux of a given partition shape, in analogy with the strong and weak Bruhat orders on permutations. The existence of such ranked poset structures allows us to classify the realizable major index statistics on standard tableaux of arbitrary straight shape and certain skew shapes, and has representation-theoretic consequences, both for the symmetric group and for Shephard-Todd groups. In a different direction, we consider the distribution of the major index on standard tableaux of arbitrary straight shape and certain skew shapes. We classify all possible limit laws for any sequence of such shapes in terms of a simple auxiliary statistic, "aft," generalizing earlier results of Canfield-Janson-Zeilberger, Chen-Wang-Wang, and others. We also study unimodality, log-concavity, and local limit properties.
Partial and global representations of finite groups
Published in Algebr Represent Theor (2022) • View PublicationBIB
Given a subgroup H of a finite group G, we begin a systematic study of the partial representations of G that restrict to global representations of H. After adapting several results from [DEP00] (which correspond to the case where H is trivial), we develop further an effective theory that allows explicit computations. As a case study, we apply our theory to the symmetric group and its subgroup of permutations fixing 1: this provides a natural extension of the classical representation theory of the symmetric group.
