Some new general lower bounds for mixed metric dimension of graphs

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a connected simple graph. The distance $d(u,v)$ between vertices $u$ and $v$ from $V$ is the number of edges in the shortest $u-v$ path. If $e=uv \in E$ is an edge in $G$ than distance $d(w,e)$ where $w$ is some vertex in $G$ is defined as $d(w,e)=\min(d(w,u),d(w,v))$. Now we can say that vertex $w \in V$ resolves two elements $x,y \in V \cup E$ if $d(w,x) \neq d(w,y)$. The mixed resolving set is a set of vertices $S$, $S\subseteq V$ if and only if any two elements of $E \cup V$ are resolved by some element of $S$. A minimal resolving set related to inclusion is called mixed resolving basis, and its cardinality is called the mixed metric dimension of a graph $G$.
This graph invariant is recently introduced and it is of interest to find its general properties and determine its values for various classes of graphs. Since the problem of finding mixed metric dimension is a minimization problem, of interest is also to find lower bounds of good quality. This paper will introduce three new general lower bounds. The exact values of mixed metric dimension for torus graph is determined using one of these lower bounds. Finally, the comparison between new lower bounds and those known in the literature will be presented on two groups of instances:
- all 21 conected graphs of order 5;
- selected 12 well-known graphs with order from 10 up to 36.

The Birkhoff graph $\mathcal{B}_n$ is the Cayley graph of the symmetric group $S_n$, where two permutations are adjacent if they differ by a single cycle. Our main result is a tighter upper bound on the independence number $α(\mathcal{B}_n)$ of $\mathcal{B}_n$, namely, we show that $α(\mathcal{B}_n) \le O(n!/1.97^n)$ improving on the previous known bound of $α(\mathcal{B}_n) \le O(n!/\sqrt{2}^{n})$ by [Kane-Lovett-Rao, FOCS 2017]. Our approach combines a higher-order version of their representation theoretic techniques with linear programming. With an explicit construction, we also improve their lower bound on $α(\mathcal{B}_n)$ by a factor of $n/2$. This construction is based on a proper coloring of $\mathcal{B}_n$, which also gives an upper bound on the chromatic number $χ(\mathcal{B}_n)$ of $\mathcal{B}_n$. Via known connections, the upper bound on $α(\mathcal{B}_n)$ implies alphabet size lower bounds for a family of maximally recoverable codes on grid-like topologies.

The $d$-Simultaneous Conjugacy problem in the symmetric group $S_n$ asks whether there exists a permutation $τ\in S_n$ such that $b_j = τ^{-1}a_j τ$ holds for all $j = 1,2,\ldots, d$, where $a_1, a_2,\ldots , a_d$ and $b_1, b_2,\ldots , b_d$ are given sequences of permutations in $S_n$. The time complexity of existing algorithms for solving the problem is $O(dn^2)$. We show that for a given positive integer $d$ the $d$-Simultaneous Conjugacy problem in $S_n$ can be solved in $o(n^2)$ time.
Honeycomb Toroidal Graphs
Honeycomb toroidal graphs are trivalent Cayley graphs on generalized dihedral groups. We examine the two historical threads leading to these graphs, some of the properties that have been established, and some open problems.

For a bridgeless graph $G$, its flow polynomial is defined to be the function $F(G,q)$ which counts the number of nonwhere-zero $Γ$-flows on an orientation of $G$ whenever $q$ is a positive integer and $Γ$ is an additive Abelian group of order $q$. It was introduced by Tutte in 1950 and the locations of zeros of this polynomial have been studied by many researchers. This article gives a survey on the results and problems on the study of real zeros of flow polynomials.
Fundamental Groupoids for Graphs
In this paper, we develop a $\times$-homotopy fundamental groupoid for graphs, and show a functorial relationship to the 2-category of graphs. We further explore the fundamental groupoid of graph products and develop a groupoid product which respects the graph product. A van Kampen Theorem for these groupoids is provided. Finally, we generalize previous work on a fundamental group for graphs, developing a looped walk groupoid and showing a connection to the polyhedral complex of graph morphisms.

We study the combinatorial geometry of a random closed multicurve on a surface of large genus and of a random square-tiled surface of large genus. We prove that primitive components of a random multicurve represent linearly independent homology cycles with asymptotic probability 1 and that it is primitive with asymptotic probability $\sqrt{2}/2$. We prove analogous properties for random square-tiled surfaces. In particular, we show that all conical singularities of a random square-tiled surface belong to the same leaf of the horizontal foliation and to the same leaf of the vertical foliation with asymptotic probability 1.
We show that the number of components of a random multicurve and the number of maximal horizontal cylinders of a random square-tiled surface of genus $g$ are both very well-approximated by the number of cycles of a random permutation for an explicit non-uniform measure on the symmetric group of $3g-3$ elements. In particular, we prove that the expected value of these quantities is asymptotically equivalent to $(\log(6g-6) + γ)/2 + \log 2$.
These results are based on our formula for the Masur--Veech volume of the moduli space of holomorphic quadratic differentials combined with deep large genus asymptotic analysis of this formula performed by A.~Aggarwal and with the uniform asymptotic formula for intersection numbers of $ψ$-classes on the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of curves proved by A.~Aggarwal.

We consider pro-isomorphic zeta functions of the groups $Γ(\mathcal{O}_K)$, where $Γ$ is a unipotent group scheme defined over $\mathbb{Z}$ and $K$ varies over all number fields. Under certain conditions, we show that these functions have a fine Euler decomposition with factors indexed by primes $\mathfrak{p}$ of $K$ and depending only on the structure of $Γ$, the degree $[K : \mathbb{Q}]$, and the cardinality of the residue field $\mathcal{O}_K / \mathfrak{p}$. We show that the factors satisfy a certain uniform rationality and study their dependence on $[K : \mathbb{Q}]$. Explicit computations are given for several families of unipotent groups. These include an apparently novel identity involving permutation statistics on the hyperoctahedral group.
Frozen Pipes: Lattice Models for Grothendieck Polynomials

We introduce families of two-parameter multivariate polynomials indexed by pairs of partitions $v,w$ -- biaxial double $(β,q)$-Grothendieck polynomials -- which specialize at $q=0$ and $v=1$ to double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials from torus-equivariant connective K-theory. Initially defined recursively via divided difference operators, our main result is that these new polynomials arise as partition functions of solvable lattice models. Moreover, the associated quantum group of the solvable model for polynomials in $n$ pairs of variables is a Drinfeld twist of the $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_{n+1})$ $R$-matrix. By leveraging the resulting Yang-Baxter equations of the lattice model, we show that these polynomials simultaneously generalize double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials and dual double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials for arbitrary permutations. We then use properties of the model and Yang-Baxter equations to reprove Fomin-Kirillov's Cauchy identity for $β$-Grothendieck polynomials, generalize it to a new Cauchy identity for biaxial double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials, and prove a new branching rule for double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials.

For a complex finite-dimensional simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, we introduce the notion of Q-datum, which generalizes the notion of a Dynkin quiver with a height function from the viewpoint of Weyl group combinatorics. Using this notion, we develop a unified theory describing the twisted Auslander-Reiten quivers and the twisted adapted classes introduced in [O.-Suh, J. Algebra, 2019] with an appropriate notion of the generalized Coxeter elements. As a consequence, we obtain a combinatorial formula expressing the inverse of the quantum Cartan matrix of $\mathfrak{g}$, which generalizes the result of [Hernandez-Leclerc, J. Reine Angew. Math., 2015] in the simply-laced case. We also find several applications of our combinatorial theory of Q-data to the finite-dimensional representation theory of the untwisted quantum affine algebra of $\mathfrak{g}$. In particular, in terms of Q-data and the inverse of the quantum Cartan matrix, (i) we give an alternative description of the block decomposition results due to [Chari-Moura, Int. Math. Res. Not., 2005] and [Kashiwara-Kim-O.-Park, arXiv:2003.03265], (ii) we present a unified (partially conjectural) formula of the denominators of the normalized R-matrices between all the Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules, and (iii) we compute the invariants $Λ(V,W)$ and $Λ^\infty(V, W)$ introduced in [Kashiwara-Kim-O.-Park, Compos. Math., 2020] for each pair of simple modules $V$ and $W$.
On the connectivity of enhanced power graph of finite group
This paper deals with the vertex connectivity of enhanced power graph of finite group. We classify all abelian groups G such that vertex connectivity of enhanced power graph of G is 1. We derive an upper bound of vertex connectivity for the enhanced power graph of any general abelian group G. Also we completely characterize all abelian group G, such that the proper enhanced power graph is connected. Moreover, we study some special class of non-abelian group G such that the proper enhanced power graph is connected and we find their vertex connectivity.
Surfaces have (asymptotic) dimension 2
The asymptotic dimension is an invariant of metric spaces introduced by Gromov in the context of geometric group theory. When restricted to graphs and their shortest paths metric, the asymptotic dimension can be seen as a large scale version of weak diameter colorings (also known as weak diameter network decompositions), i.e. colorings in which each monochromatic component has small weak diameter.
In this paper, we prove that for any $p$, the class of graphs excluding $K_{3,p}$ as a minor has asymptotic dimension at most 2. This implies that the class of all graphs embeddable on any fixed surface (and in particular the class of planar graphs) has asymptotic dimension 2, which gives a positive answer to a recent question of Fujiwara and Papasoglu. Our result extends from graphs to Riemannian surfaces. We also prove that graphs of bounded pathwidth have asymptotic dimension at most 1 and graphs of bounded layered pathwidth have asymptotic dimension at most 2. We give some applications of our techniques to graph classes defined in a topological or geometrical way, and to graph classes of polynomial growth. Finally we prove that the class of bounded degree graphs from any fixed proper minor-closed class has asymptotic dimension at most 2. This can be seen as a large scale generalization of the result that bounded degree graphs from any fixed proper minor-closed class are 3-colorable with monochromatic components of bounded size. This also implies that (infinite) Cayley graphs avoiding some minor have asymptotic dimension at most 2, which solves a problem raised by Ostrovskii and Rosenthal.

We give a proof of the Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem using the Borel Fixed Point Theorem from algebraic group theory. This perspective gives a strong analogy between the Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem and (generalizations of) the Gerstenhaber Theorem on spaces of nilpotent matrices.
Synchronous linear constraint system games

Synchronous linear constraint system games are nonlocal games that verify whether or not two players share a solution to a given system of equations. Two algebraic objects associated to these games encode information about the existence of perfect strategies. They are called the game algebra and the solution group. Here we show that these objects are essentially the same, i.e., that the game algebra is a suitable quotient of the group algebra of the solution group. We also demonstrate that linear constraint system games are equivalent to graph isomorphism games on a pair of graphs parameterized by the linear system.
An algebraic approach to Erdős-Ko-Rado sets of flags in spherical buildings

In this paper, oppositeness in spherical buildings is used to define an EKR-problem for flags in projective and polar spaces. A novel application of the theory of buildings and Iwahori-Hecke algebras is developed to prove sharp upper bounds for EKR-sets of flags. In this framework, we can reprove and generalize previous upper bounds for EKR-problems in projective and polar spaces. The bounds are obtained by the application of the Delsarte-Hoffman coclique bound to the opposition graph. The computation of its eigenvalues is due to earlier work by Andries Brouwer and an explicit algorithm is worked out. For the classical geometries, the execution of this algorithm boils down to elementary combinatorics. Connections to building theory, Iwahori-Hecke algebras, classical groups and diagram geometries are briefly discussed. Several open problems are posed throughout and at the end.

We prove that the Cayley graphs $X(G,S)$ and $X^+(G,S)$ are equienergetic for any abelian group $G$ and any symmetric subset $S$. We then focus on the family of unitary Cayley graphs $G_R=X(R,R^*)$, where $R$ is a finite commutative ring with identity. We show that under mild conditions, $\{G_R, G_R^+\}$ are pairs of integral equienergetic non-isospectral graphs (generically connected and non-bipartite). Then, we obtain conditions such that $\{G_R, \bar G_R\}$ are equienergetic non-isospectral graphs. Finally, we characterize all integral equienergetic non-isospectral triples $\{G_R, G_R^+, \bar G_R \}$ such that all the graphs are also Ramanujan.
Erdős distinct distances in hyperbolic surfaces

In this paper, we introduce the notion of "geodesic cover" for Fuchsian groups, which summons copies of fundamental polygons in the hyperbolic plane to cover pairs of representatives realizing distances in the corresponding hyperbolic surface. Then we use estimates of geodesic-covering numbers to study the distinct distances problem in hyperbolic surfaces. Especially, for $Y$ from a large class of hyperbolic surfaces, we establish the nearly optimal bound $\geq c(Y)N/\log N$ for distinct distances determined by any $N$ points in $Y$, where $c(Y)>0$ is some constant depending only on $Y$. In particular, for $Y$ being modular surface or standard regular of genus $g\geq 2$, we evaluate $c(Y)$ explicitly. We also derive new sum-product type estimates.
A characterisation of virtually free groups via minor exclusion

We give a new characterisation of virtually free groups using graph minors. Namely, we prove that a finitely generated, infinite group is virtually free if and only if for any finite generating set, the corresponding Cayley graph is minor excluded. This answers a question of Ostrovskii and Rosenthal. The proof relies on showing that a finitely generated group that is minor excluded with respect to every finite generating set is accessible, using a graph-theoretic characterisation of accessibility due to Thomassen and Woess.
Unicellular maps and filtrations of the mapping class group
This article first answers to questions about connectedness of a new family of graphs on unicellular maps. Answering these questions goes through a description of the mapping class group as surgeries on unicellular maps. We also show how unicellular maps encode subgroups of the mapping group and provide filtrations of the mapping class group. These facts add a layer on the ubiquitous character of unicellular maps.
Affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties and folded galleries governed by chimneys
We characterize the nonemptiness and dimension problems for an affine Deligne-Lusztig variety $X_x(b)$ in the affine flag variety in terms of galleries that are positively folded with respect to a chimney. If the parabolic subgroup associated to the Newton point of b has rank 1, we then prove nonemptiness for a certain class of Iwahori-Weyl group elements x by explicitly constructing such galleries.
