On the asymptotics of Kronecker coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
Kronecker coefficients encode the tensor products of complex irreducible representations of symmetric groups. Their stability properties have been considered recently by several authors (Vallejo, Pak and Panova, Stembridge). We describe a geometric method, based on Schur-Weyl duality, that allows to produce huge series of instances of this phenomenon. Moreover the method gives access to lots of extra information. Most notably, we can often compute the stable Kronecker coefficients, sometimes as number of points in very explicit polytopes. We can also describe explicitely the moment polytope in the neighbourhood of our stable triples. Finally, we explain an observation of Stembridge on the behaviour of certain rectangular Kronecker coefficients, by relating it to the affine Dynkin diagram of type $E\_6$.

Walks in the Quarter Plane with Multiple Steps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We extend the classification of nearest neighbour walks in the quarter plane to models in which multiplicities are attached to each direction in the step set. Our study leads to a small number of infinite families that completely characterize all the models whose associated group is D4, D6, or D8. These families cover all the models with multiplicites 0, 1, 2, or 3, which were experimentally found to be D-finite --- with three noteworthy exceptions.

Six Constructions of Difference Families
In this paper, six constructions of difference families are presented. These constructions make use of difference sets, almost difference sets and disjoint difference families, and give new point of views of relationships among these combinatorial objects. Most of the constructions work for all finite groups. Though these constructions look simple, they produce many difference families with new parameters. In addition to the six new constructions, new results about intersection numbers are also derived.

The infinite cyclohedron and its automorphism group
Cyclohedra are a well-known infinite familiy of finite-dimensional polytopes that can be constructed from centrally symmetric triangulations of even-sided polygons. In this article we introduce an infinite-dimensional analogue and prove that the group of symmetries of our construction is a semidirect product of a degree 2 central extension of Thompson's infinite finitely presented simple group T with the cyclic group of order 2. These results are inspired by a similar recent analysis by the first author of the automorphism group of an infinite-dimensional associahedron.
RNA, local moves on plane trees, and transpositions on tableaux
Published in Involve, a Journal of Mathematics 11:3 (2018), 383-411 • View PublicationBIB
We define a collection of functions $s_i$ on the set of plane trees (or standard Young tableaux). The functions are adapted from transpositions in the representation theory of the symmetric group and almost form a group action. They were motivated by $\textit{local moves}$ in combinatorial biology, which are maps that represent a certain unfolding and refolding of RNA strands. One main result of this study identifies a subset of local moves that we call $s_i$-local moves, and proves that $s_i$-local moves correspond to the maps $s_i$ acting on standard Young tableaux. We also prove that the graph of $s_i$-local moves is a connected, graded poset with unique minimal and maximal elements. We then extend this discussion to functions $s_i^C$ that mimic reflections in the Weyl group of type $C$. The corresponding graph is no longer connected, but we prove it has two connected components, one of symmetric and the other of asymmetric plane trees. We give open questions and possible biological interpretations.

Stochastic monotonicity in Young graph and Thoma theorem
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices 2015 (23): 12920-12940 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the order on probability measures, inherited from the dominance order on the Young diagrams, is preserved under natural maps reducing the number of boxes in a diagram by $1$. As a corollary we give a new proof of the Thoma theorem on the structure of characters of the infinite symmetric group. We present several conjectures generalizing our result. One of them (if it is true) would imply the Kerov's conjecture on the classification of all homomorphisms from the algebra of symmetric functions into $\mathbb R$ which are non-negative on Hall--Littlewood polynomials.

The $γ$-positivity of basic Eulerian polynomials via group actions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide combinatorial interpretation for the $γ$-coefficients of the basic Eulerian polynomials that enumerate permutations by the excedance statistic and the major index as well as the corresponding $γ$-coefficients for derangements. Our results refine the classical $γ$-positivity results for the Eulerian polynomials and the derangement polynomials. The main tools are Brändén's modified Foata--Strehl action on permutations and the recent triple statistic (des, rix, aid) equidistibuted with (exc, fix, maj).

Transitive nonpropelinear perfect codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A code is called transitive if its automorphism group (the isometry group) of the code acts transitively on its codewords. If there is a subgroup of the automorphism group acting regularly on the code, the code is called propelinear. Using Magma software package we establish that among 201 equivalence classes of transitive perfect codes of length 15 from \cite{ost} there is a unique nonpropelinear code. We solve the existence problem for transitive nonpropelinear perfect codes for any admissible length $n$, $n\geq 15$. Moreover we prove that there are at least 5 pairwise nonequivalent such codes for any admissible length $n$, $n\geq 255$.

Combinatorially two-orbit convex polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Any convex polytope whose combinatorial automorphism group has two orbits on the flags is isomorphic to one whose group of Euclidean symmetries has two orbits on the flags (equivalently, to one whose automorphism group and symmetry group coincide.) Hence, a combinatorially two-orbit convex polytope is isomorphic to one of a known finite list, all of which are 3-dimensional: the cuboctahedron, icosidodecahedron, rhombic dodecahedron, or rhombic triacontahedron. The same is true of combinatorially two-orbit normal face-to-face tilings by convex polytopes.

Affine Symmetries of Orbit Polytopes
Published in Adv. Math. 288, pp. 386-425 (2016) • View PublicationBIB
An orbit polytope is the convex hull of an orbit under a finite group $G \leq \operatorname{GL}(d,\mathbb{R})$. We develop a general theory of possible affine symmetry groups of orbit polytopes. For every group, we define an open and dense set of generic points such that the orbit polytopes of generic points have conjugated affine symmetry groups. We prove that the symmetry group of a generic orbit polytope is again $G$ if $G$ is itself the affine symmetry group of some orbit polytope, or if $G$ is absolutely irreducible. On the other hand, we describe some general cases where the affine symmetry group grows. We apply our theory to representation polytopes (the convex hull of a finite matrix group) and show that their affine symmetries can be computed effectively from a certain character. We use this to construct counterexamples to a conjecture of Baumeister et~al.\ on permutation polytopes [Advances in Math. 222 (2009), 431--452, Conjecture~5.4].

Schubert slices in the combinatorial geometry of flag domains
Flag domains are open orbits of real semisimple Lie groups in flag manifolds of their complexifications. Certain group theoretically defined compact complex submanifolds, which are regarded as cycles, are of basic importance for their complex geometric and representation theoretic properties. It is known that there are optimal Schubert varieties which intersect the cycles transversally in finitely many points and in particular determine them in homology. Here we give a precise description of these Schubert varieties in terms of certain subsets of the Weyl group and compute their total number for all the real forms of SL(n,C). Furthermore, we give an explicit description of the points of intersection in terms of flags and their number.

SISO Output Affine Feedback Transformation Group and Its Faa di Bruno Hopf Algebra
Published in SIAM J. Control Optim. 55-2 (2017), pp. 885-912 • View PublicationBIB
The general goal of this paper is to identify a transformation group that can be used to describe a class of feedback interconnections involving subsystems which are modeled solely in terms of Chen-Fliess functional expansions or Fliess operators and are independent of the existence of any state space models. This interconnection, called an output affine feedback connection, is distinguished from conventional output feedback by the presence of a multiplier in an outer loop. Once this transformation group is established, three basic questions are addressed. How can this transformation group be used to provide an explicit Fliess operator representation of such a closed-loop system? Is it possible to use this feedback scheme to do system inversion purely in an input-output setting? In particular, can feedback input-output linearization be posed and solved entirely in this framework, i.e., without the need for any state space realization? Lastly, what can be said about feedback invariants under this transformation group? A final objective of the paper is to describe the Lie algebra of infinitesimal characters associated with the group in terms of a pre-Lie product.

The Colored Eulerian Descent Algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using a new colored analogue of P-partitions, we prove the existence of a colored Eulerian descent algebra which is a subalgebra of the Mantaci-Reutenauer algebra. This algebra has a basis consisting of formal sums of colored permutations with the same number of descents (using Steingrímsson's definition of the descent set of a colored permutation). The colored Eulerian descent algebra extends familiar Eulerian descent algebras from the symmetric group algebra and the hyperoctahedral group algebra to colored permutation group algebras. We also describe a set of orthogonal idempotents that spans the colored Eulerian descent algebra and includes, as a special case, the familiar Eulerian idempotents in the group algebra of the symmetric group.

Wreath product action on generalized Boolean algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G be a finite group acting on the finite set X such that the corresponding (complex) permutation representation is multiplicity free. There is a natural rank and order preserving action of the wreath product G~S_n on the generalized Boolean algebra B_X(n). We explicitly block diagonalize the commutant of this action.

Morphic images of episturmian words having finite palindromic defect
Published in Eur. J. Combin. 51 (2016), 359-371 • View PublicationBIB
We study morphisms from certain classes and their action on episturmian words. The first class is $P_{ret}$. In general, a morphism of class $P_{ret}$ can map an infinite word having zero palindromic defect to a word having infinite palindromic defect. We show that the image of an episturmian word, which has zero palindromic defect, under a morphism of class $P_{ret}$ has always its palindromic defect finite. We also focus on letter-to-letter morphisms to binary alphabet: we show that images of ternary episturmian words under such morphisms have zero palindromic defect. These results contribute to the study of an unsolved question of characterization of morphisms that preserve finite (resp. zero) palindromic defect. They also enable us to construct new examples of binary $H$-rich and almost $H$-rich words, where $H = \{\rm{Id}, R, E, RE \}$ is the group generated by both involutory antimorphisms on a binary alphabet.

On the cardinality of a factor set in the symmetric group
Published in Asian-European Journal of Mathematics,Vol. 7, No. 2 (2014) 1450027 • View PublicationBIB
Let $n$ be a positive integer, $σ$ be an element of the symmetric group $\mathcal{S}_n$ and let $σ$ be a cycle of length $n$. The elements $α,β\in \mathcal{S}_n$ are $σ$-equivalent, if there are natural numbers $k$ and $l$, such that $σ^k α=βσ^l$, which is the same as the condition to exist natural numbers $k_1$ and $l_1$, such that $α= σ^{k_1} βσ^{l_1}$. In this work we examine some properties of the so defined equivalence relation. We build a finite oriented graph $Γ_n$ with the help of which is described an algorithm for solving the combinatorial problem for finding the number of equivalence classes according to this relation.

Normally Regular Digraphs
A normally regular digraph with parameters $(v,k,λ,μ)$ is a directed graph on $v$ vertices whose adjacency matrix $A$ satisfies the equation $AA^t=k I+λ(A+A^t)+μ(J-I-A-A^t)$. This means that every vertex has out-degree $k$, a pair of non-adjacent vertices have $μ$ common out-neighbours, a pair of vertices connected by an edge in one direction have $λ$ common out-neighbours and a pair of vertices connected by edges in both directions have $2λ-μ$ common out-neighbours. We often assume that two vertices can not be connected in both directions. We prove that the adjacency matrix of a normally regular digraph is normal. A connected $k$-regular digraph with normal adjacency matrix is a normally regular digraph if and only if all eigenvalues other than $k$ are on one circle in the complex plane. We prove several non-existence results, structural characterizations, and constructions of normally regular digraphs. In many cases these graphs are Cayley graphs of abelian groups and the construction is then based on a generalization of difference sets. We also show connections to other combinatorial objects: strongly regular graphs, symmetric 2-designs and association schemes.

Connections between conjectures of Alon-Tarsi, Hadamard-Howe, and integrals over the special unitary group

The genus of curve, pants and flip graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article is about the graph genus of certain well studied graphs in surface theory: the curve, pants and flip graphs. We study both the genus of these graphs and the genus of their quotients by the mapping class group. The full graphs, except for in some low complexity cases, all have infinite genus. The curve graph once quotiented by the mapping class group has the genus of a complete graph so its genus is well known by a theorem of Ringel and Youngs. For the other two graphs we are able to identify the precise growth rate of the graph genus in terms of the genus of the underlying surface. The lower bounds are shown using probabilistic methods.

Deformed Cohomology of Flag Varieties
Published in Mathematical Research Letters 25(2), 2018, 649-657 • View PublicationBIB
This paper introduces a two-parameter deformation of the cohomology of generalized flag varieties. One special case is the Belkale-Kumar deformation (used to study eigencones of Lie groups). Another picks out intersections of Schubert varieties that behave nicely under projections. Our construction yields a new proof that the Belkale-Kumar product is well-defined. This proof is shorter and more elementary than earlier proofs.
