On Freiman's 3k-4 theorem
One of the many theorems Freiman proved, in the second half of the twentieth century, in the subject which later came to be known as "structure theory of set addition", was 'Freiman's $3k-4$ theorem' for subsets of $\Z$. In this article we introduce concept of a new `structure' on finite subsets of integers. Sets with this structure are quite useful in additive number theory in some contexts. Also we give some criterion for subsets to posses this structure. Then this is used to establish an analog of Freiman's $3k-4$ theorem for the groups $\Z \times G,$ where $G$ is any abelian group.

Smallest tetravalent half-arc-transitive graphs with the vertex-stabiliser isomorphic to the dihedral group of order $8$
A connected graph whose automorphism group acts transitively on the edges and vertices, but not on the set of ordered pairs of adjacent vertices of the graph is called half-arc-transitive. It is well known that the valence of a half-arc-transitive graph is even and at least four. Several infinite families of half-arc-transitive graphs of valence four are known, however, in all except four of the known specimens, the vertex-stabiliser in the automorphism group is abelian. The first example of a half-arc-transitive graph of valence four and with a non-abelian vertex-stabiliser was described in [Conder and Marušič, A tetravalent half-arc-transitive graph with non-abelian vertex stabilizer, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 88 (2003) 67--76]. This example has $10752$ vertices and vertex-stabiliser isomorphic to the dihedral group of order $8$. In this paper, we show that no such graphs of smaller order exist, thus answering a frequently asked question.

Highly symmetric matroids, the strong Rayleigh property, and sums of squares
We investigate the strong Rayleigh property of matroids for which the basis enumerating polynomial is invariant under a Young subgroup of the symmetric group on the ground set. In general, the Grace-Walsh-Szegő theorem can be used to simplify the problem. When the Young subgroup has only two orbits, such a matroid is strongly Rayleigh if and only if an associated univariate polynomial has only real roots. When this polynomial is quadratic we get an explicit structural criterion for the strong Rayleigh property. Finally, if one of the orbits has rank two then the matroid is strongly Rayleigh if and only if the Rayleigh difference of any two points on this line is in fact a sum of squares.
Combinatorial covers and vanishing of cohomology
Published in Selecta Mathematica 22 (2016), no. 2, 561-594 • View PublicationBIB
We use a Mayer-Vietoris-like spectral sequence to establish vanishing results for the cohomology of complements of linear and elliptic hyperplane arrangements, as part of a more general framework involving duality and abelian duality properties of spaces and groups. In the process, we consider cohomology of local systems with a general, Cohen-Macaulay-type condition. As a result, we recover known vanishing theorems for rank-1 local systems as well as group ring coefficients, and obtain new generalizations.

Upper bounds on the growth rates of hard squares and related models via corner transfer matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the growth rate of the hard squares lattice gas, equivalent to the number of independent sets on the square lattice, and two related models - non-attacking kings and read-write isolated memory. We use an assortment of techniques from combinatorics, statistical mechanics and linear algebra to prove upper bounds on these growth rates. We start from Calkin and Wilf's transfer matrix eigenvalue bound, then bound that with the Collatz-Wielandt formula from linear algebra. To obtain an approximate eigenvector, we use an ansatz from Baxter's corner transfer matrix formalism, optimised with Nishino and Okunishi's corner transfer matrix renormalisation group method. This results in an upper bound algorithm which no longer requires exponential memory and so is much faster to calculate than a direct evaluation of the Calkin-Wilf bound. Furthermore, it is extremely parallelisable and so allows us to make dramatic improvements to the previous best known upper bounds. In all cases we reduce the gap between upper and lower bounds by 4-6 orders of magnitude.

Signature characters of highest-weight representations of $U_{q}(\mathfrak{gl}_{n})$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider $U_{q}(\mathfrak{gl}_{n})$, the quantum group of type $A$ for $|q| = 1$, $q$ generic. We provide formulas for signature characters of irreducible finite-dimensional highest weight modules and Verma modules. In both cases, the technique involves combinatorics of the Gelfand-Tsetlin bases. As an application, we obtain information about unitarity of finite-dimensional irreducible representations for arbitrary $q$: we classify the continuous spectrum of the unitarity locus. We also recover some known results in the classical limit $q \rightarrow 1$ that were obtained by different means. Finally, we provide several explicit examples of signature characters.
On colour-preserving automorphisms of Cayley graphs
We study the automorphisms of a Cayley graph that preserve its natural edge-colouring. More precisely, we are interested in groups G, such that every such automorphism of every connected Cayley graph on G has a very simple form: the composition of a left-translation and a group automorphism. We find classes of groups that have the property, and we determine the orders of all groups that do not have the property. We also have analogous results for automorphisms that permute the colours, rather than preserving them.

Tensor models from the viewpoint of matrix models: the case of the Gaussian distribution
Observables in random tensor theory are polynomials in the entries of a tensor of rank $d$ which are invariant under $U(N)^d$. It is notoriously difficult to evaluate the expectations of such polynomials, even in the Gaussian distribution. In this article, we introduce singular value decompositions to evaluate the expectations of polynomial observables of Gaussian random tensors. Performing the matrix integrals over the unitary group leads to a notion of effective observables which expand onto regular, matrix trace invariants. Examples are given to illustrate that both asymptotic and exact new calculations of expectations can be performed this way.

Symmetric unimodal expansions of excedances in colored permutations
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 52, part A, 174-196, 2016 • View PublicationBIB
We consider several generalizations of the classical $γ$-positivity of Eulerian polynomials (and their derangement analogues) using generating functions and combinatorial theory of continued fractions. For the symmetric group, we prove an expansion formula for inversions and excedances as well as a similar expansion for derangements. We also prove the $γ$-positivity for Eulerian polynomials for derangements of type $B$. More general expansion formulae are also given for Eulerian polynomials for $r$-colored derangements. Our results answer and generalize several recent open problems in the literature.

On Schur 3-groups
Published in Siberian Electronic Mathematical Reports, 12 (2015) 223-331 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a finite group. If $Γ$ is a permutation group with $G_{right}\leqΓ\leq Sym(G)$ and $\mathcal{S}$ is the set of orbits of the stabilizer of the identity $e=e_{G}$ in $Γ$, then the $\mathbb{Z}$-submodule $\mathcal{A}(Γ,G)=Span_{\mathbb{Z}}\{\underline{X}:\ X\in\mathcal{S}\}$ of the group ring $\mathbb{Z} G$ is an $S$-ring as it was observed by Schur. Following Pöschel an $S$-ring $\mathcal{A}$ over $G$ is said to be schurian if there exists a suitable permutation group $Γ$ such that $\mathcal{A}=\mathcal{A}(Γ,G)$. A finite group $G$ is called a Schur group if every $S$-ring over $G$ is schurian. We prove that the groups $M_{3^n}=\langle a,b\;|\:a^{3^{n-1}}=b^3=e,a^b=a^{3^{n-2}+1}\rangle$, where $n\geq3$, are not Schur. Modulo previously obtained results, it follows that every Schur $p$-group is abelian whenever $p$ is an odd prime.

Canonical forms of $2\times 3 \times 3$ tensors over the real field, algebraically closed fields, and finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
We classify the orbits of elements of the tensor product spaces ${\mathbb{F}}^2\otimes {\mathbb{F}}^3 \otimes {\mathbb{F}}^3$ for all finite; real; and algebraically closed fields under the action of two natural groups. The result can also be interpreted as the classification of the orbits in the $17$-dimensional projective space of the Segre variety product of a projective line and two projective planes. This extends the classification of the orbits in the $7$-dimensional projective space of the Segre variety product of three projective lines [M. Lavrauw and J. Sheekey: Orbits of the stabiliser group of the Segre variety product of three projective lines, Finite Fields Appl. (2014)]. The proof is geometric in nature, relies on properties of the Segre embedding, and uses the terminology of projective spaces.

Gowers' Ramsey Theorem with multiple operations and dynamics of the homeomorphism group of the Lelek fan
We generalize the finite version of Gowers' Ramsey theorem to multiple tetris-like operations and apply it to show that a group of homeomorphisms that preserve a "typical" linear order of branches of the Lelek fan, a compact connected metric space with many symmetries, is extremely amenable.

Reducts of the Generic Digraph
Published • View PublicationBIB
The generic digraph $(D,E)$ is the unique countable homogeneous digraph that embeds all finite digraphs. In this paper, we determine the lattice of reducts of $(D,E)$, where a structure $\mathcal{M}$ is a reduct of $(D,E)$ if it has domain $D$ and all its $\emptyset$-definable relations are $\emptyset$-definable relations of $(D,E)$. As $(D,E)$ is $\aleph_0$-categorical, this is equivalent to determining the lattice of closed groups that lie in between Aut$(D,E)$ and Sym$(D)$.

Cosets, Voltages, and Derived Embeddings
An ordinary voltage graph embedding of a graph in a surface encodes a certain kind of highly symmetric covering space of that surface. Given an ordinary voltage graph embedding of a graph $G$ in a surface with voltage group $A$ and a connected subgraph $H$ of $G$, we define special subgroups of $A$ that depend on $H$ and show how cosets of these groups in $A$ can be used to find topological information concerning the derived embedding without constructing the whole covering space. Our strongest theorems treat the case that $H$ is a cycle and the fiber over $H$ is a disjoint union of cycles with annular neighborhoods, in which case we are able to deduce specific symmetry properties of the derived embeddings. We give infinite families of examples that demonstrate the usefulness of our results.
Combinatorics of fully commutative involutions in classical Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
An element of a Coxeter group $W$ is fully commutative if any two of its reduced decompositions are related by a series of transpositions of adjacent commuting generators. In the present work, we focus on fully commutative involutions, which are characterized in terms of Viennot's heaps. By encoding the latter by Dyck-type lattice walks, we enumerate fully commutative involutions according to their length, for all classical finite and affine Coxeter groups. In the finite cases, we also find explicit expressions for their generating functions with respect to the major index. Finally in affine type $A$, we connect our results to Fan--Green's cell structure of the corresponding Temperley--Lieb algebra.

The geometry of flip graphs and mapping class groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The space of topological decompositions into triangulations of a surface has a natural graph structure where two triangulations share an edge if they are related by a so-called flip. This space is a sort of combinatorial Teichmüller space and is quasi-isometric to the underlying mapping class group. We study this space in two main directions. We first show that strata corresponding to triangulations containing a same multiarc are strongly convex within the whole space and use this result to deduce properties about the mapping class group. We then focus on the quotient of this space by the mapping class group to obtain a type of combinatorial moduli space. In particular, we are able to identity how the diameters of the resulting spaces grow in terms of the complexity of the underlying surfaces.

Automorphisms of strongly regular graphs
In this article we generalize a theorem of Benson for generalized quadrangles to strongly regular graphs and directed strongly regular graphs. The main result provides numerical restrictions on the number of fixed vertices and the number of vertices mapped to adjacent vertices under an automorphism. It is explained how these results can be used when studying partial difference sets in Abelian groups and projective two-weight sets. The underlying ideas are linear algebraic in nature.
