Topological Symmetry Groups of Complete Bipartite Graphs
Published in Tokyo J. Math., vol. 39, 2016, pp. 133-156 • View PublicationBIB
The symmetries of complex molecular structures can be modeled by the {\em topological symmetry group} of the underlying embedded graph. It is therefore important to understand which topological symmetry groups can be realized by particular abstract graphs. This question has been answered for complete graphs; it is natural next to consider complete bipartite graphs. In previous work we classified the complete bipartite graphs that can realize topological symmetry groups isomorphic to $A_4$, $S_4$ or $A_5$; in this paper we determine which complete bipartite graphs have an embedding in $S^3$ whose topological symmetry group is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_m$, $D_m$, $\mathbb{Z}_r \times \mathbb{Z}_s$ or $(\mathbb{Z}_r \times \mathbb{Z}_s) \ltimes \mathbb{Z}_2$.
Entry-Faithful $2$-Neighbour Transitive Codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a code to be a subset of the vertex set of a Hamming graph. The set of $s$-neighbours of a code is the set of vertices, not in the code, at distance $s$ from some codeword, but not distance less than $s$ from any codeword. A $2$-neighbour transitive code is a code which admits a group $X$ of automorphisms which is transitive on the $s$-neighbours, for $s=1,2$, and transitive on the code itself. We give a classification of $2$-neighbour transitive codes, with minimum distance $δ\geq 5$, for which $X$ acts faithfully on the set of entries of the Hamming graph.

Truncated versions of Dwork's lemma for exponentials of power series and $p$-divisibility of arithmetic functiens
Published in Adv. Math. 283 (2015), 489-529 • View PublicationBIB
(Dieudonné and) Dwork's lemma gives a necessary and sufficient condition for an exponential of a formal power series $S(z)$ with coefficients in $Q_p$ to have coefficients in $Z_p$. We establish theorems on the $p$-adic valuation of the coefficients of the exponential of $S(z)$, assuming weaker conditions on the coefficients of $S(z)$ than in Dwork's lemma. As applications, we provide several results concerning lower bounds on the $p$-adic valuation of the number of permutation representations of finitely generated groups. In particular, we give fairly tight lower bounds in the case of an arbitrary finite Abelian $p$-group, thus generalising numerous results in special cases that had appeared earlier in the literature. Further applications include sufficient conditions for ultimate periodicity of subgroup numbers modulo $p$ for free products of finite Abelian $p$-groups, results on $p$-divisibility of permutation numbers with restrictions on their cycle structure, and a curious "supercongruence" for a certain binomial sum.
Identifying Codes of Degree 4 Cayley Graphs over Abelian Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper a wide family of identifying codes over regular Cayley graphs of degree four which are built over finite Abelian groups is presented. Some of the codes in this construction are also perfect. The graphs considered include some well-known graphs such as tori, twisted tori and Kronecker products of two cycles. Therefore, the codes can be used for identification in these graphs. Finally, an example of how these codes can be applied for adaptive identification over these graphs is presented.

The rainbow connection number of the power graph of a finite group
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies the rainbow connection number of the power graph $Γ_G$ of a finite group $G$. We determine the rainbow connection number of $Γ_G$ if $G$ has maximal involutions or is nilpotent, and show that the rainbow connection number of $Γ_G$ is at most three if $G$ has no maximal involutions. The rainbow connection numbers of power graphs of some nonnilpotent groups are also given.

Quivers, Words and Fundamentals
Published • View PublicationBIB
A systematic study of holomorphic gauge invariant operators in general $\mathcal{N}=1$ quiver gauge theories, with unitary gauge groups and bifundamental matter fields, was recently presented in [1]. For large ranks a simple counting formula in terms of an infinite product was given. We extend this study to quiver gauge theories with fundamental matter fields, deriving an infinite product form for the refined counting in these cases. The infinite products are found to be obtained from substitutions in a simple building block expressed in terms of the weighted adjacency matrix of the quiver. In the case without fundamentals, it is a determinant which itself is found to have a counting interpretation in terms of words formed from partially commuting letters associated with simple closed loops in the quiver. This is a new relation between counting problems in gauge theory and the Cartier-Foata monoid. For finite ranks of the unitary gauge groups, the refined counting is given in terms of expressions involving Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.

Sign conjugacy classes of the symmetric groups
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 22 (2015), no. 3, P3.12 • View PublicationBIB
A conjugacy class $C$ of a finite group $G$ is a sign conjugacy class if every irreducible character of $G$ takes value 0, 1 or -1 on $C$. In this paper we classify the sign conjugacy classes of the symmetric groups and thereby verify a conjecture of Olsson.

G(l,k,d)-modules via groupoids
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 43 (2016), no. 1, 11-32 • View PublicationBIB
In this note we describe a seemingly new approach to the complex representation theory of the wreath product $G\wr S_d$ where $G$ is a finite abelian group. The approach is motivated by an appropriate version of Schur-Weyl duality. We construct a combinatorially defined groupoid in which all endomorphism algebras are direct products of symmetric groups and prove that the groupoid algebra is isomorphic to the group algebra of $G\wr S_d$. This directly implies a classification of simple modules. As an application, we get a Gelfand model for $G\wr S_d$ from the classical involutive Gelfand model for the symmetric group. We describe the Schur-Weyl duality which motivates our approach and relate it to various Schur-Weyl dualities in the literature. Finally, we discuss an extension of these methods to all complex reflection groups of type $G(\ell,k,d)$.
Numerical Algorithm for Pólya Enumeration Theorem

Although the Pólya enumeration theorem has been used extensively for decades, an optimized, purely numerical algorithm for calculating its coefficients is not readily available. We present such an algorithm for finding the number of unique colorings of a finite set under the action of a finite group.

Permutation combinatorics of worldsheet moduli space
Published in Phys. Rev. D 91, 126001 (2015) • View PublicationBIB
Light-cone string diagrams have been used to reproduce the orbifold Euler characteristic of moduli spaces of punctured Riemann surfaces at low genus and with few punctures. Nakamura studied the meromorphic differential introduced by Giddings and Wolpert to characterise light-cone diagrams and introduced a class of graphs related to this differential. These Nakamura graphs were used to parametrise the cells in a light-cone cell decomposition of moduli space. We develop links between Nakamura graphs and realisations of the worldsheet as branched covers. This leads to a development of the combinatorics of Nakamura graphs in terms of permutation tuples. For certain classes of cells, including those of top dimension, there is a simple relation to Belyi maps, which allows us to use results from Hermitian and complex matrix models to give analytic formulae for the counting of cells at arbitrarily high genus. For the most general cells, we develop a new equivalence relation on Hurwitz classes which organises the cells and allows efficient enumeration of Nakamura graphs using the group theory software GAP.

On the use of Klein quadric for geometric incidence problems in two dimensions
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 30-2 (2016), pp. 934-954 (does not contain the latter addition) • View PublicationBIB
We discuss a unified approach to a class of geometric combinatorics incidence problems in $2D$, of the Erdös distance type. The goal is obtaining the second moment estimate, that is given a finite point set $S$ and a function $f$ on $S\times S$, an upper bound on the number of solutions of $$ f(p,p') = f(q,q')\neq 0,\qquad (p,p',q,q')\in S\times S\times S\times S. \qquad(*) $$ E.g., $f$ is the Euclidean distance in the plane, sphere, or a sheet of the two-sheeted hyperboloid. Our tool is the Guth-Katz incidence theorem for lines in $\mathbb{RP}^3$, but we focus on how the original $2D$ problem is made amenable to it. This procedure was initiated by Elekes and Sharir, based on symmetry considerations. However, symmetry considerations can be bypassed or made implicit. The classical Plücker-Klein formalism for line geometry enables one to directly interpret a solution of $(*)$ as intersection of two lines in $\mathbb{RP}^3$. This allows for a very brief argument extending the Euclidean plane distance argument to the spherical and hyperbolic distances. We also find instances of the question $(*)$ without underlying symmetry group. The space of lines in the three-space, the Klein quadric $\mathcal K$, is four-dimensional. We start out with an injective map $\mathfrak F:\,S\times S\to\mathcal K$, from a pair of points in $2D$ to a line in $3D$ and seek a combinatorial problem in the form $(*)$, which can be solved by applying the Guth-Katz theorem to the set of lines in question. We identify a few new such problems and generalise the existing ones.

On the automorphism group of a Johnson graph
The Johnson graph $J(n,i)$ is defined to the graph whose vertex set is the set of all $i$-element subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$, and two vertices are joined whenever the cardinality of their intersection is equal to $i-1$. In Ramras and Donovan [\emph{SIAM J. Discrete Math}, 25(1): 267-270, 2011], it is conjectured that if $n=2i$, then the automorphism group of the Johnson graph $J(n,i)$ is $S_n \times \langle T \rangle$, where $T$ is the complementation map $A \mapsto \{1,\ldots,n\} \setminus A$. We resolve this conjecture in the affirmative. The proof uses only elementary group theory and is based on an analysis of the clique structure of the graph.

On symmetry group of Mollard code
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a pair of given binary perfect codes C and D of lengths t and m respectively, the Mollard construction outputs a perfect code M(C,D) of length tm + t + m, having subcodes C1 and D2, that are obtained from codewords of C and D respectively by adding appropriate number of zeros. In this work we generalize of a result for symmetry groups of Vasilev codes [2] and find the group Stab_{D2}Sym(M(C,D)). The result is preceded by and partially based on a discussion of linearity of coordinate positions (points) in a nonlinear perfect code (non-projective Steiner triple system respectively).

An explicit Ramsey graph
Explicit construction of Ramsey graphs has remained a challenging open problem for a long time. Frankl--Wilson \cite{FW}, Alon \cite{A} and Grolmusz \cite{G2} gave the best explicit constructions of graphs on $m$ vertices with no clique or independent set of size $m^{(1+o(1))\frac{1}{4}\frac{\log m}{\log \log m}}$. We describe here an explicit construction which produces for every integer $m>1$ a graph on at least $m^{(1+o(1))\frac{1}{3}\frac{\log m}{\log \log m}}$ vertices containing neither a clique of size $m$ nor an independent set of size $m$. In the proof we use the polynomial subspace method and some character theory of the complete symmmetric group.

Polynomialité des coefficients de structure des algèbres de doubles-classes
In this thesis we studied the structure coefficients and especially their dependence on $n$ in the case of a sequence of double-class algebras. The first chapter is dedicated to the study of the structure coefficients in the general cases of centers of group algebras and double-class algebras. We recall in it the representation theory of finite groups and its link with structure coefficients. We show also that the study of the structure coefficients of double-class algebras is related to the theory of Gelfand pairs and zonal spherical functions by giving, in the case of Gelfand pairs, a theorem similar to that of Frobenius which writes the structure coefficients of the double-class algebra associated to a Gelfand pair in terms of zonal spherical functions. In the second chapter, we recall the Farahat and Higman's theorem about the polynomiality of the structure coefficients of the center of the symmetric group algebra as well as the Ivanov and Kerov's approach to prove this theorem. We give a combinatorial proof to the polynomiality property of the structure coefficients of the Hecke algebra of the pair $(S_{2n},B_n)$ in the third chapter. Our proof uses a universal algebra which projects on the Hecke algebra of $(S_{2n}, B_n)$ for each $n.$ We show that this universal algebra is isomorphic to the algebra of $2$-shifted symmetric functions. In the fourth and last chapter we build a general framework which gives us the form of the structure coefficients in the case of a sequence of double-class algebras. This framework implies the polynomiality property of the structure coefficients of both the center of the symmetric group algebra and the Hecke algebra of $(S_{2n},B_n).$ In addition, we give a polynomiality property for the structure coefficients of both the center of the hyperoctahedral group algebra and the double-class algebra of $diag(S_{n-1})$ in $S_n\times S_{n-1}^{opp}.$

On the asymptotics of Kronecker coefficients, 2
Kronecker coefficients encode the tensor products of complex irreducible representations of symmetric groups. Their stability properties have been considered recently by several authors (Vallejo, Pak and Panova, Stembridge). In previous works we described a geometric method, based on Schur-Weyl duality, that allows to produce huge series of instances of this phenomenon. In this note we show how to go beyond these so-called additive triples. We show that the set of stable triples defines a union of faces of the moment polytope. Moreover these faces may have different dimensions, and many of them have codimension one.

The exceptional symmetry
This note gives an elementary proof that the symmetric groups possess only one exceptional symmetry. I am referring to the fact that the outer automorphism group of the symmetric group $S_n$ is trivial unless $n=6$ and the outer automorphism group of $S_6$ has a unique nontrivial element.

Conjugacy classes of reflections of maps
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper considers how many conjugacy classes of reflections a map can have, under various transitivity conditions. It is shown that for vertex- and for face-transitive maps there is no restriction on their number or size, whereas edge-transitive maps can have at most four classes of reflections. Examples are constructed, using topology, covering spaces and group theory, to show that various distributions of reflections can be achieved. Connections with real forms of algebraic curves are also discussed.

Cube-like Incidence Complexes and Their Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The article studies power complexes and generalized power complexes, and investigates the algebraic structure of their automorphism groups. The combinatorial incidence structures involved are cube-like, in the sense that they have many structural properties in common with higher-dimensional cubes and cubical tessellations on manifolds. Power complexes have repeatedly appeared in applications.

Weight posets associated with gradings of simple Lie algebras, Weyl groups, and arrangements of hyperplanes
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 44, no.2 (2016), 325-344 • View PublicationBIB
The set of weights of a finite-dimensional representation of a reductive Lie algebra has a natural poset structure ("weight poset"). Studying certain combinatorial problems related to antichains in weight posets, we realised that the best setting is provided by the representations associated with $\mathbb Z$-gradings of simple Lie algebras (arXiv: math.CO 1411.7683). If $\mathfrak g$ is a simple Lie algebra, then a $\mathbb Z$-grading of $\mathfrak g$ induces a $\mathbb Z$-grading of the corresponding root system $Δ$. In this article, we elaborate on a general theory of lower ideals (or antichains) in the corresponding weight posets $Δ(1)$. In particular, we provide a bijection between the lower ideals in $Δ(1)$ and certain elements of the Weyl group of $\mathfrak g$. An inspiring observation is that, to a great extent, the theory of lower ideals in $Δ(1)$ is similar to the theory of upper (= ad-nilpotent) ideals in the whole poset of positive roots $Δ^+$.
