Simple Alcohols with the Lowest Normal Boiling Point Using Topological Indices
Published in MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem., Volume 75 (2016) number 1, pp. 29-56 • Search Publication
We find simple saturated alcohols with the given number of carbon atoms and the minimal normal boiling point. The boiling point is predicted with a weighted sum of the generalized first Zagreb index, the second Zagreb index, the Wiener index for vertex-weighted graphs, and a simple index caring for the degree of a carbon atom being incident to the hydroxyl group. To find extremal alcohol molecules we characterize chemical trees of order $n$, which minimize the sum of the second Zagreb index and the generalized first Zagreb index, and also build chemical trees, which minimize the Wiener index over all chemical trees with given vertex weights.

Two bounds on the noncommuting graph
Published in Central European Journal of Mathematics 13 (2015), 273--282 • View PublicationBIB
Erdős introduced the noncommuting graph, in order to study the number of commuting elements in a finite group. Despite the use of combinatorial ideas, his methods involved several techniques of classical analysis. The interest for this graph is becoming relevant in the last years for various reasons. Here we deal with a numerical aspect, showing for the first time an isoperimetric inequality and an analytic condition in terms of Sobolev inequalities. This last result holds in the more general context of weighted locally finite graphs.

Homomorphisms of binary Cayley graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A binary Cayley graph is a Cayley graph based on a binary group. In 1982, Payan proved that any non-bipartite binary Cayley graph must contain a generalized Mycielski graph of an odd-cycle, implying that such a graph cannot have chromatic number 3. We strengthen this result first by proving that any non-bipartite binary Cayley graph must contain a projective cube as a subgraph. We further conjecture that any homo- morphism of a non-bipartite binary Cayley graph to a projective cube must be surjective and we prove some special case of this conjecture.

Hardness of Computing Clique Number and Chromatic Number For Cayley Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Computing the clique number and chromatic number of a general graph are well-known NP-Hard problems. Codenotti et al. (Bruno Codenotti, Ivan Gerace, and Sebastiano Vigna. Hardness results and spectral techniques for combinatorial problems on circulant graphs. \emph{Linear Algebra Appl.}, 285(1-3): 123--142, 1998) showed that computing clique number and chromatic number are still NP-Hard problems for the class of circulant graphs. We show that computing clique number is NP-Hard for the class of Cayley graphs for the groups $G^n$, where $G$ is any fixed finite group (e.g., cubelike graphs). We also show that computing chromatic number cannot be done in polynomial time (under the assumption $\text{P}\neq \text{NP}$) for the same class of graphs. Our presentation uses free Cayley graphs. The proof combines free Cayley graphs with quotient graphs and Goppa codes.

Test Sets for Nonnegativity of Polynomials Invariant under a Finite Reflection Group
Published • View PublicationBIB
A set $S\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a nonnegativity witness for a set $U$ of real homogeneous polynomials if $F$ in $U$ is nonnegative on $\mathbb{R}^n$ if and only if it is nonnegative at all points of $S$. We prove that the union of the hyperplanes perpendicular to the elements of a root system $Φ\subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ is a witness set for nonnegativity of forms of low degree which are invariant under the reflection group defined by $Φ$. We prove that our bound for the degree is sharp for all reflection groups which contain multiplication by $-1$. We then characterize subspaces of forms of arbitrarily high degree where this union of hyperplanes is a nonnegativity witness set. Finally we propose a conjectural generalization of Timofte's half-degree principle for finite reflection groups.

On the automorphism group of a binary $q$-analog of the Fano plane
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 51 (2016), 443-457 • View PublicationBIB
The smallest set of admissible parameters of a $q$-analog of a Steiner system is $S_2[2,3,7]$. The existence of such a Steiner system -- known as a binary $q$-analog of the Fano plane -- is still open. In this article, the automorphism group of a putative binary $q$-analog of the Fano plane is investigated by a combination of theoretical and computational methods. As a conclusion, it is either rigid or its automorphism group is cyclic of order $2$, $3$ or $4$. Up to conjugacy in $\operatorname{GL}(7,2)$, there remains a single possible group of order $2$ and $4$, respectively, and two possible groups of order $3$. For the automorphisms of order $2$, we give a more general result which is valid for any binary $q$-Steiner triple system.

Equivariant quantum cohomology of cotangent bundle of $G/P$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ denote a complex semisimple linear algebraic group, $P$ a parabolic subgroup of $G$ and $\mathcal{P}=G/P$. We identify the quantum multiplication by divisors in $T^*\mathcal{P}$ in terms of stable basis, which is introduced by Maulik and Okounkov. Using this and the restriction formula for stable basis, we show that the $G\times\mathbb{C}^*$-equivariant quantum multiplication formula in $T^*\mathcal{P}$ is conjugate to the conjectured formula by Braverman.
On the full automorphism group of a Hamiltonian cycle system of odd order
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is shown that a necessary condition for an abstract group G to be the full automorphism group of a Hamiltonian cycle system is that G has odd order or it is either binary, or the affine linear group AGL(1; p) with p prime. We show that this condition is also sufficient except possibly for the class of non-solvable binary groups.
Equivalences of ${\mathbb Z} _t \times {\mathbb Z}_2^2$-cocyclic Hadamard matrices
One of the most promising structural approaches to resolving the Hadamard Conjecture uses the family of cocyclic matrices over ${\mathbb Z} _t \times {\mathbb Z}_2^2$. Two types of equivalence relations for classifying cocyclic matrices over ${\mathbb Z} _t \times {\mathbb Z}_2^2$ have been found. Any cocyclic matrix equivalent by either of these relations to a Hadamard matrix will also be Hadamard. One type, based on algebraic relations between cocycles over any finite group, has been known for some time. Recently, and independently, a second type, based on four geometric relations between diagrammatic visualisations of cocyclic matrices over ${\mathbb Z} _t \times {\mathbb Z}_2^2$, has been found. Here we translate the algebraic equivalences to diagrammatic equivalences and show one of the diagrammatic equivalences cannot be obtained this way. This additional equivalence is shown to be the geometric translation of matrix transposition.
On Partial Sums in Cyclic Groups
We are interested in ordering the elements of a subset A of the non-zero integers modulo n in such a way that all the partial sums are distinct. We conjecture that this can always be done and we prove various partial results about this problem.

Graphs with $2^n+6$ vertices and cyclic automorphism group of order $2^n$
The problem of finding upper bounds for minimal vertex number of graphs with a given automorphism group is addressed in this article for the case of cyclic $2$-groups. We show that for any natural $n\ge 2$ there is an undirected graph having $2^n+6$ vertices and automorphism group cyclic of order $2^n$. This confirms an upper bound claimed by other authors for minimal number of vertices of undirected graphs having automorphism group $\mathbb{Z}/2^n\mathbb{Z}$.

A generalization of sumsets modulo a prime
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $A$ be a set in an abelian group $G$. For integers $h,r \geq 1$ the generalized $h$-fold sumset, denoted by $h^{(r)}A$, is the set of sums of $h$ elements of $A$, where each element appears in the sum at most $r$ times. If $G=\mathbb{Z}$ lower bounds for $|h^{(r)}A|$ are known, as well as the structure of the sets of integers for which $|h^{(r)}A|$ is minimal. In this paper we generalize this result by giving a lower bound for $|h^{(r)}A|$ when $G=\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ for a prime $p$, and show new proofs for the direct and inverse problems in $\mathbb{Z}$.

On separability problem for circulant S-rings
Published in Algebra and Analysis, 28, No. 1 (2016), 46-65 • View PublicationBIB
A Schur ring (S-ring) over a group $G$ is called separable if every of its similaritities is induced by isomorphism. We establish a criterion for an S-ring to be separable in the case when the group $G$ is cyclic. Using this criterion, we prove that any S-ring over a cyclic $p$-group is separable and that the class of separable circulant S-rings is closed with respect to duality.

Vertex-primitive digraphs having vertices with almost equal neighbourhoods
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider vertex-primitive digraphs having two vertices with almost equal neighbourhoods (that is, the set of vertices that are neighbours of one but not the other is small). We prove a structural result about such digraphs and then apply it to answer a question of Araújo and Cameron about synchronising groups.

A tableau approach to the representation theory of 0-Hecke algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
A 0-Hecke algebra is a deformation of the group algebra of a Coxeter group. Based on work of Norton and Krob--Thibon, we introduce a tableau approach to the representation theory of 0-Hecke algebras of type A, which resembles the classic approach to the representation theory of symmetric groups by Young tableaux and tabloids. We extend this approach to type B and D, and obtain a correspondence between the representation theory of 0-Hecke algebras of type B and D and quasisymmetric functions and noncommutative symmetric functions of type B and D. Other applications are also provided.

A skein action of the symmetric group on noncrossing partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study a new action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on the vector space spanned by noncrossing partitions of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ in which the adjacent transpositions $(i, i+1) \in \mathfrak{S}_n$ act on noncrossing partitions by means of skein relations. We characterize the isomorphism type of the resulting module and use it to obtain new representation theoretic proofs of cyclic sieving results due to Reiner-Stanton-White and Pechenik for the action of rotation on various classes of noncrossing partitions and the action of K-promotion on two-row rectangular increasing tableaux. Our skein relations generalize the Kauffman bracket (or Ptolemy relation) and can be used to resolve any set partition as a linear combination of noncrossing partitions in a $\mathfrak{S}_n$-equivariant way.

On traces of tensor representations of diagrams
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $T$ be a set, of {\em types}, and let $ι,o:T\to\oZ_+$. A {\em $T$-diagram} is a locally ordered directed graph $G$ equipped with a function $τ:V(G)\to T$ such that each vertex $v$ of $G$ has indegree $ι(τ(v))$ and outdegree $o(τ(v))$. (A directed graph is {\em locally ordered} if at each vertex $v$, linear orders of the edges entering $v$ and of the edges leaving $v$ are specified.) Let $V$ be a finite-dimensional $\oF$-linear space, where $\oF$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. A function $R$ on $T$ assigning to each $t\in T$ a tensor $R(t)\in V^{*\otimes ι(t)}\otimes V^{\otimes o(t)}$ is called a {\em tensor representation} of $T$. The {\em trace} (or {\em partition function}) of $R$ is the $\oF$-valued function $p_R$ on the collection of $T$-diagrams obtained by `decorating' each vertex $v$ of a $T$-diagram $G$ with the tensor $R(τ(v))$, and contracting tensors along each edge of $G$, while respecting the order of the edges entering $v$ and leaving $v$. In this way we obtain a {\em tensor network}. We characterize which functions on $T$-diagrams are traces, and show that each trace comes from a unique `strongly nondegenerate' tensor representation. The theorem applies to virtual knot diagrams, chord diagrams, and group representations.

Peckness of Edge Posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
For any graded poset $P$, we define a new graded poset, $\mathcal E(P)$, whose elements are the edges in the Hasse diagram of P. For any group, $G$, acting on the boolean algebra, $B_n$, we conjecture that $\mathcal E(B_n/G)$ is Peck. We prove that the conjecture holds for "common cover transitive" actions. We give some infinite families of common cover transitive actions and show that the common cover transitive actions are closed under direct and semidirect products.

Average-Value Tverberg Partitions via Finite Fourier Analysis
Published • View PublicationBIB
The long-standing topological Tverberg conjecture claimed, for any continuous map from the boundary of an $N(q,d):=(q-1)(d+1)$-simplex to $d$-dimensional Euclidian space, the existence of $q$ pairwise disjoint subfaces whose images have non-empty $q$-fold intersection. The affine cases, true for all $q$, constitute Tverberg's famous 1966 generalization of the classical Radon's Theorem. Although established for all prime powers in 1987 by Özaydin, counterexamples to the conjecture, relying on 2014 work of Mabillard and Wagner, were first shown to exist for all non-prime-powers in 2015 by Frick. Starting with a reformulation of the topological Tverberg conjecture in terms of harmonic analysis on finite groups, we show that despite the failure of the conjecture, continuous maps \textit{below} the tight dimension $N(q,d)$ are nonetheless guaranteed $q$ pairwise disjoint subfaces -- including when $q$ is not a prime power -- which satisfy a variety of "average value" coincidences, the latter obtained as the vanishing of prescribed Fourier transforms.
On parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig R-polynomials for the symmetric group
Published • View PublicationBIB
Parabolic $R$-polynomials were introduced by Deodhar as parabolic analogues of ordinary $R$-polynomials defined by Kazhdan and Lusztig. In this paper, we are concerned with the computation of parabolic $R$-polynomials for the symmetric group. Let $S_n$ be the symmetric group on $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$, and let $S=\{s_i\,|\, 1\leq i\leq n-1\}$ be the generating set of $S_n$, where for $1\leq i\leq n-1$, $s_i$ is the adjacent transposition. For a subset $J\subseteq S$, let $(S_n)_J$ be the parabolic subgroup generated by $J$, and let $(S_n)^{J}$ be the set of minimal coset representatives for $S_n/(S_n)_J$. For $u\leq v\in (S_n)^J$ in the Bruhat order and $x\in \{q,-1\}$, let $R_{u,v}^{J,x}(q)$ denote the parabolic $R$-polynomial indexed by $u$ and $v$. Brenti found a formula for $R_{u,v}^{J,x}(q)$ when $J=S\setminus\{s_i\}$, and obtained an expression for $R_{u,v}^{J,x}(q)$ when $J=S\setminus\{s_{i-1},s_i\}$. We introduce a statistic on pairs of permutations in $(S_n)^J$ for $J=S\setminus\{s_{i-2},s_{i-1},s_i\}$. Then we give a formula for $R_{u,v}^{J,x}(q)$, where $J=S\setminus\{s_{i-2},s_{i-1},s_i\}$ and $i$ appears after $i-1$ in $v$. We also pose a conjecture for $R_{u,v}^{J,x}(q)$, where $J=S\setminus\{s_{k},s_{k+1},\ldots,s_i\}$ with $1\leq k\leq i\leq n-1$ and the elements $k+1,k+2,\ldots, i$ appear in increasing order in $v$.
