Analogies of the Qi formula for some Dowling type numbers
In the paper, the authors establish explicit formulas for the Dowling numbers and their generalizations in terms of generalizations of the Lah numbers and the Stirling numbers of the second kind. These results gen- eralize the Qi formula for the Bell numbers in terms of the Lah numbers and the Stirling numbers of the second kind.

Total non-negativity of some combinatorial matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Many combinatorial matrices --- such as those of binomial coefficients, Stirling numbers of both kinds, and Lah numbers --- are known to be totally non-negative, meaning that all minors (determinants of square submatrices) are non-negative. The examples noted above can be placed in a common framework: for each one there is a non-decreasing sequence $(a_1, a_2, \ldots)$, and a sequence $(e_1, e_2, \ldots)$, such that the $(m,k)$-entry of the matrix is the coefficient of the polynomial $(x-a_1)\cdots(x-a_k)$ in the expansion of $(x-e_1)\cdots(x-e_m)$ as a linear combination of the polynomials $1, x-a_1, \ldots, (x-a_1)\cdots(x-a_m)$. We consider this general framework. For a non-decreasing sequence $(a_1, a_2, \ldots)$ we establish necessary and sufficient conditions on the sequence $(e_1, e_2, \ldots)$ for the corresponding matrix to be totally non-negative. As corollaries we obtain totally non-negativity of matrices of rook numbers of Ferrers boards, and of graph Stirling numbers of chordal graphs.

On a class of polynomials connected to Bell polynomials
In this paper, we study a class of sequences of polynomials linked to the sequence of Bell polynomials. Some sequences of this class have applications on the theory of hyperbolic differential equations and other sequences generalize Laguerre polynomials and associated Lah polynomials. We discuss, for these polynomials, their explicit expressions, relations to the successive derivatives of a given function, real zeros and recurrence relations. Some known results are significantly simplified.

We provide a combinatorial interpretation of Lah numbers by means of planar networks. Henceforth, as a conesquence of Lindström's lemma, we conclude that the related Lah matrix possesses a remarkable property of total non-negativity.
On xD-Generalizations of Stirling Numbers and Lah Numbers via Graphs and Rooks
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies the generalizations of the Stirling numbers of both kinds and the Lah numbers in association with the normal order problem in the Weyl algebra $W=\langle x,D|Dx-xD=1\rangle$. Any word $ω\in W$ with $m$ $x$'s and $n$ $D$'s can be expressed in the normally ordered form $ω=x^{m-n}\sum_{k\ge 0} {ω\brace {k}} x^{k}D^{k}$, where ${ω\brace {k}}$ is known as the Stirling number of the second kind for the word $ω$. This study considers the expansions of restricted words $ω$ in $W$ over the sequences $\{(xD)^{k}\}_{k\ge 0}$ and $\{xD^{k}x^{k-1}\}_{k\ge 0}$. Interestingly, the coefficients in individual expansions turn out to be generalizations of the Stirling numbers of the first kind and the Lah numbers. The coefficients will be determined through enumerations of some combinatorial structures linked to the words $ω$, involving decreasing forest decompositions of quasi-threshold graphs and non-attacking rook placements on Ferrers boards. Extended to $q$-analogues, weighted refinements of the combinatorial interpretations are also investigated for words in the $q$-deformed Weyl algebra.

Restricted Stirling and Lah number matrices and their inverses
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given $R \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ let ${n \brace k}_R$, ${n \brack k}_R$, and $L(n,k)_R$ be the number of ways of partitioning the set $[n]$ into $k$ non-empty subsets, cycles and lists, respectively, with each block having cardinality in $R$. We refer to these as the $R$-restricted Stirling numbers of the second and first kind and the $R$-restricted Lah numbers, respectively. Note that the classical Stirling numbers of the second kind and first kind, and Lah numbers are ${n \brace k} = {n \brace k}_{\mathbb{N}}$, ${n \brack k} = {n \brack k}_{\mathbb{N}} $ and $L(n,k) = L(n,k)_{\mathbb{N}}$, respectively. The matrices $[{n \brace k}]_{n,k \geq 1}$, $[{n \brack k}]_{n,k \geq 1}$ and $[L(n,k)]_{n,k \geq 1}$ have inverses $[(-1)^{n-k}{n \brack k}]_{n,k \geq 1}$, $[(-1)^{n-k} {n \brace k}]_{n,k \geq 1}$ and $[(-1)^{n-k} L(n,k)]_{n,k \geq 1}$ respectively. The inverse matrices $[{n \brace k}_R]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$, $[{n \brack k}_R]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$ and $[L(n,k)_R]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$ exist if and only if $1 \in R$. We express each entry of each of these matrices as the difference between the cardinalities of two explicitly defined families of labeled forests. In particular the entries of $[{n \brace k}_{[r]}]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$ have combinatorial interpretations, affirmatively answering a question of Choi, Long, Ng and Smith from 2006. If $1,2 \in R$ and if for all $n \in R$ with $n$ odd and $n \geq 3$, we have $n \pm 1 \in R$, we additionally show that each entry of $[{n \brace k}_R]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$, $[{n \brack k}_R]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$ and $[L(n,k)_R]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$ is up to an explicit sign the cardinality of a single explicitly defined family of labeled forests. Our results also provide combinatorial interpretations of the $k$th Whitney numbers of the first and second kinds of $Π_n^{1,d}$, the poset of partitions of $[n]$ that have each part size congruent to $1$ mod $d$.

Rhombic alternative tableaux and assemblées of permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce the rhombic alternative tableaux, whose weight generating functions provide combinatorial formulae to compute the steady state probabilities of the two-species ASEP. In the ASEP, there are two species of particles, one heavy and one light, hopping right and left on a one-dimensional finite lattice with open boundaries. Parameters $α$, $β$, and $q$ describe the hopping probabilities. The rhombic alternative tableaux are enumerated by the Lah numbers, which also enumerate certain assemblées of permutations. We describe a bijection between the rhombic alternative tableaux and these assemblées. We also provide an insertion algorithm that gives a weight generating function for the assemblées. Combined, these results give a bijective proof for the weight generating function for the rhombic alternative tableaux, which is also the partition function of the two-species ASEP at $q=1$.

Multiple analogues of certain families of combinatorial numbers are recently constructed by the author in terms of well poised Macdonald functions, and some of their fundamental properties are developed. In this paper, we present combinatorial formulas for the well poised Macdonald functions, the multiple binomial coefficients, the multiple bracket function, and the multiple Catalan and Lah numbers.

Elliptic rook and file numbers
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 24(1) (2017), #P1.31 • View PublicationBIB
Utilizing elliptic weights, we construct an elliptic analogue of rook numbers for Ferrers boards. Our elliptic rook numbers generalize Garsia and Remmel's q-rook numbers by two additional independent parameters a and b, and a nome p. These are shown to satisfy an elliptic extension of a factorization theorem which in the classical case was established by Goldman, Joichi and White and later was extended to the q-case by Garsia and Remmel. We obtain similar results for our elliptic analogues of Garsia and Remmel's q-file numbers for skyline boards. We also provide an elliptic extension of the j-attacking model introduced by Remmel and Wachs. Various applications of our results include elliptic analogues of (generalized) Stirling numbers of the first and second kind, Lah numbers, Abel numbers, and r-restricted versions thereof.

A Fibonacci analogue of Stirling numbers
Consider the Fibonacci numbers defined by setting $F_1=1=F_2$ and $F_n =F_{n-1}+F_{n-2}$ for $n \geq 3$. We let $n_F! = F_1 \cdots F_n$ and $\binom{n}{k}_F = \frac{n_F!}{k_F!(n-k)_F!}$. Let $(x)_{\downarrow_0} = (x)_{\uparrow_0} = 1$ and for $k \geq 1$, $(x)_{\downarrow_k} = x(x-1) \cdots (x-k+1)$ and $(x)_{\uparrow_k} = x(x+1) \cdots (x+k-1)$. Then the Stirling numbers of the first and second kind are the connections coefficients between the usual power basis $\{x^n:n \geq 0\}$ and the falling factorial basis $\{(x)_{\downarrow_n}:n \geq 0\}$ in the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[x]$ and the Lah numbers are the connections coefficients between the rising factorial basis $\{(x)_{\uparrow_n}:n \geq 0\}$ and the falling factorial basis $\{(x)_{\downarrow_n}:n \geq 0\}$ in the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[x]$. The goal of this paper is to find Fibonacci analogues for the Stirling numbers of the first and second kind and the Lah numbers. Our idea is to replace the falling factorial basis and the rising factorial basis by the Fibo-falling factorial basis $\{(x)_{\downarrow_{F,n}}:n \geq 0\}$ and the Fibo-rising factorial basis $\{(x)_{\uparrow_{F,n}}:n \geq 0\}$ where $(x)_{\downarrow_{F,0}} = (x)_{\uparrow_{F,0}} = 1$ and for $k \geq 1$, $(x)_{\downarrow_{F,k}} = x(x-F_1) \cdots (x-F_{k-1})$ and $(x)_{\uparrow_{F,k}} = x(x+F_1) \cdots (x+F_{k-1})$. Then we study the combinatorics of the connection coefficients betweenthe usual power basis, the Fibo-falling factorial basis, and the Fibo-rising factorial basis. In each case, we can give a rook theory model for the connections coefficients and show how this rook theory model can give combinatorial explanations for many of the properties of these coefficients.

Generalizations of Bell number formulas of Spivey and Mezo
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide q-generalizations of Spivey's Bell number formula in various settings by considering statistics on different combinatorial structures. This leads to new identities involving q-Stirling numbers of both kinds and q-Lah numbers. As corollaries, we obtain identities for both binomial and q-binomial coefficients. Our results at the same time also generalize recent r-Stirling number formulas of Mezo. Finally, we provide a combinatorial proof and refinement of Xu's extension of Spivey's formula to the generalized Stirling numbers of Hsu and Shiue. To do so, we develop a combinatorial interpretation for these numbers in terms of extended Lah distributions.

Associated Lah numbers and r-Stirling numbers
We introduce the associated Lah numbers. Some recurrence relations and convolution identities are established. An extension of the associated Stirling and Lah numbers to the r-Stirling and r-Lah numbers are also given. For all these sequences we give combinatorial interpretation, generating functions, recurrence relations, convolution identities. In the sequel, we develop a section on nested sums related to binomial coefficient.

Mellin Transforms of the Generalized Fractional Integrals and Derivatives
Published in Applied Mathematics and Computation 257 (2015) 566-580 • View PublicationBIB
We obtain the Mellin transforms of the generalized fractional integrals and derivatives that generalize the Riemann-Liouville and the Hadamard fractional integrals and derivatives. We also obtain interesting results, which combine generalized $δ_{r,m}$ operators with generalized Stirling numbers and Lah numbers. For example, we show that $δ_{1,1}$ corresponds to the Stirling numbers of the $2^{nd}$ kind and $δ_{2,1}$ corresponds to the unsigned Lah numbers. Further, we show that the two operators $δ_{r,m}$ and $δ_{m,r}$, $r,m\in\mathbb{N}$, generate the same sequence given by the recurrence relation \[ S(n,k)=\sum_{i=0}^r \big(m+(m-r)(n-2)+k-i-1\big)_{r-i}\binom{r}{i} S(n-1,k-i), \;\; 0< k\leq n, \] with $S(0,0)=1$ and $S(n,0)=S(n,k)=0$ for $n>0$ and $1+min\{r,m\}(n-1) < k $ or $k\leq 0$. Finally, we define a new class of sequences for $r \in \{\frac{1}{3}, \frac{1}{4}, \frac{1}{5}, \frac{1}{6}, ...\}$ and in turn show that $δ_{\frac{1}{2},1}$ corresponds to the generalized Laguerre polynomials.

Inversions relating Stirling, tanh, Lah numbers and an application to Mathematical Statistics
Inversion formulas have been found, converting between Stirling, tanh and Lah numbers. Tanh and Lah polynomials, analogous to the Stirling polynomials, have been defined and their basic properties established. New identities for Stirling and tangent numbers and polynomials have been derived from the general inverse relations. In the second part of the paper, it has been shown that if shifted-gamma probability densities and negative binomial distributions are matched by equating their first three semi-invariants (cumulants), then the cumulants of the two distributions are related by a pair of reciprocal linear combinations equivalent to the inversion formulas established in the first part.
