The Harary index of trees
The Harary index of a graph $G$ is recently introduced topological index, defined on the reverse distance matrix as $H(G)=\sum_{u,v \in V(G)}\frac{1}{d(u,v)}$, where $d(u,v)$ is the length of the shortest path between two distinct vertices $u$ and $v$. We present the partial ordering of starlike trees based on the Harary index and we describe the trees with the second maximal and the second minimal Harary index. In this paper, we investigate the Harary index of trees with $k$ pendent vertices and determine the extremal trees with maximal Harary index. We also characterize the extremal trees with maximal Harary index with respect to the number of vertices of degree two, matching number, independence number, radius and diameter. In addition, we characterize the extremal trees with minimal Harary index and given maximum degree. We concluded that in all presented classes, the trees with maximal Harary index are exactly those trees with the minimal Wiener index, and vice versa.

Let $G=G(d)$ be a random graph with a given degree sequence $d$, such as a random $r$-regular graph where $r\ge 3$ is fixed and $n=|G|\to\infty$. We study the percolation phase transition on such graphs $G$, i.e., the emergence as $p$ increases of a unique giant component in the random subgraph $G[p]$ obtained by keeping edges independently with probability $p$. More generally, we study the emergence of a giant component in $G(d)$ itself as $d$ varies. We show that a single method can be used to prove very precise results below, inside and above the `scaling window' of the phase transition, matching many of the known results for the much simpler model $G(n,p)$. This method is a natural extension of that used by Bollobas and the author to study $G(n,p)$, itself based on work of Aldous and of Nachmias and Peres; the calculations are significantly more involved in the present setting.

Let $H$ be a $3$-partite $3$-uniform hypergraph, i.e. a $3$-uniform hypergraph such that every edge intersects every partition class in exactly one vertex, with each partition class of size $n$. We determine a Dirac-type vertex degree threshold for perfect matchings in $3$-partite $3$-uniform hypergraphs.

We characterize strongly edge regular product graphs and find the edge-balanced index sets of complete bipartite graphs without a perfect matching, the direct product $K_n\times K_2$. We also prove a lemma that is helpful to determine the edge-balanced index sets of regular graphs.

This is the report-version of a mini-series of two articles on the foundations of satisfiability of conjunctive normal forms with non-boolean variables, to appear in Fundamenta Informaticae, 2011. These two parts are here bundled in one report, each part yielding a chapter.
Generalised conjunctive normal forms are considered, allowing literals of the form "variable not-equal value". The first part sets the foundations for the theory of autarkies, with emphasise on matching autarkies. Main results concern various polynomial time results in dependency on the deficiency. The second part considers translations to boolean clause-sets and irredundancy as well as minimal unsatisfiability. Main results concern classification of minimally unsatisfiable clause-sets and the relations to the hermitian rank of graphs. Both parts contain also discussions of many open problems.
The cavity method for counting spanning subgraphs subject to local constraints
Using the theory of negative association for measures and the notion of random weak limits of sparse graphs, we establish the validity of the cavity method for counting spanning subgraphs subject to local constraints in asymptotically tree-like graphs. Specifically, the corresponding free entropy density is shown to converge along any sequence of graphs whose random weak limit is a tree, and the limit is directly expressed in terms of the unique solution to a limiting cavity equation. On a Galton-Watson tree, the latter simplifies into a recursive distributional equation which can be solved explicitely. As an illustration, we provide an explicit-limit formula for the $b-$matching number of an Erdős-Rényi random graph with fixed average degree and diverging size, for any $b\in\mathbb N$.

Let G be a graph and let I be its edge ideal. Our main result shows that the sets of associated primes of the powers of I form an ascending chain. It is known that the sets of associated primes of I(i) and intcl(I(i)) stabilize for large i, where "intcl" denotes integral closure and I(i) denotes the i-th power of I. We show that for edge ideals their corresponding stable sets are equal. To show our main result we use a classical result of Berge from matching theory and certain notions from combinatorial optimization.
Patterns in column strict fillings of rectangular arrays
In this paper, we study pattern matching in the set F_{n,k} of fillings of the k x n rectangle with the integers 1,...,kn such that the elements in any column increase from bottom to top. Let P be a column strict tableau of shape 2^k. We say that a filling F in F_{n,k} has P-match starting at i if the elements of F in columns i and i+1 have the same relative order as the elements of P. We compute the generating functions for the distribution of P-matches and nonoverlapping P-matches for various classes of standard tableaux of shape 2^k. We say that a filling F in F_{n,k} is P-alternating if there are P-matches of F starting at all odd positions but there are no P-matches of F starting at even positions. We also compute the generating functions for P-alternating elements of F_{n,k} for various classes of standard tableaux of shape 2^k.
The Wiener Index of Unicyclic Graphs with Girth and the Matching Number
In this paper, we investigate how the Wiener index of unicyclic graphs varies with graph operations. These results are used to present a sharp lower bound for the Wiener index of unicyclic graphs of order $n$ with girth and the matching number $β\ge \frac{3g}{2}$. Moreover, we characterize all extremal graphs which attain the lower bound.

A set S is independent in a graph G if no two vertices from S are adjacent. By core(G) we mean the intersection of all maximum independent sets. The independence number alpha(G) is the cardinality of a maximum independent set, while mu(G) is the size of a maximum matching in G. A connected graph having only one cycle, say C, is a unicyclic graph. In this paper we prove that if G is a unicyclic graph of order n and n-1 = alpha(G) + mu(G), then core(G) coincides with the union of cores of all trees in G-C.
Pattern Matching in the Cycle Structure of Permutations

In this paper, we introduce a class of indicators that enable to compute efficiently optimal transport plans associated to arbitrary distributions of N demands and M supplies in R in the case where the cost function is concave. The computational cost of these indicators is small and independent of N. A hierarchical use of them enables to obtain an efficient algorithm.
An Algorithm Computing the Core of a Konig-Egervary Graph
A set S of vertices is independent in a graph G if no two vertices from S are adjacent, and alpha(G) is the cardinality of a maximum independent set of G.
G is called a Konig-Egervary graph if its order equals alpha(G)+mu(G), where mu(G) denotes the size of a maximum matching. By core(G) we mean the intersection of all maximum independent sets of G.
To decide whether core(G) is empty is known to be NP-hard.
In this paper, we present some polynomial time algorithms finding core(G) of a Konig-Egervary graph G.
Local Maximum Stable Sets Greedoids Stemmed from Very Well-Covered Graphs

A maximum stable set in a graph G is a stable set of maximum cardinality. S is called a local maximum stable set of G if S is a maximum stable set of the subgraph induced by the closed neighborhood of S. A greedoid (V,F) is called a local maximum stable set greedoid if there exists a graph G=(V,E) such that its family of local maximum stable sets coinsides with (V,F). It has been shown that the family local maximum stable sets of a forest T forms a greedoid on its vertex set. In this paper we demonstrate that if G is a very well-covered graph, then its family of local maximum stable sets is a greedoid if and only if G has a unique perfect matching.

Let G=(V,E) be a graph. A set S is independent if no two vertices from S are adjacent. The independence number alpha(G) is the cardinality of a maximum independent set, and mu(G) is the size of a maximum matching. The number id_{c}(G)=max{|I|-|N(I)|:I is an independent set} is called the critical independence difference of G, and A is critical if |A|-|N(A)|=id_{c}(G). We define core(G) as the intersection of all maximum independent sets, and ker(G)as the intersection of all critical independent sets. In this paper we prove that if a graph G is non-quasi-regularizable (i.e., there exists some independent set A, such that |A|>|N(A)|), then: ker(G) is a subset of core(G), and |ker(G)|> id_{c}(G) >= alpha(G)-mu(G) > 0.

A perfect matching in a 3-uniform hypergraph on $n=3k$ vertices is a subset of $\frac{n}{3}$ disjoint edges. We prove that if $H$ is a 3-uniform hypergraph on $n=3k$ vertices such that every vertex belongs to at least ${n-1\choose 2} - {2n/3\choose 2}+1$ edges then $H$ contains a perfect matching. We give a construction to show that this result is best possible.

A perfect matching in a 4-uniform hypergraph is a subset of $\lfloor\frac{n}{4}\rfloor$ disjoint edges. We prove that if $H$ is a sufficiently large 4-uniform hypergraph on $n=4k$ vertices such that every vertex belongs to more than ${n-1\choose 3} - {3n/4 \choose 3}$ edges then $H$ contains a perfect matching. This bound is tight and settles a conjecture of H{á}n, Person and Schacht.

A set S is independent if no two vertices from S are adjacent. In this paper we prove that if F is a collection of maximum independent sets of a graph, then there is a matching from S-{intersection of all members of F} into {union of all members of F}-S, for every independent set S. Based on this finding we give alternative proofs for a number of well-known lemmata, as the "Maximum Stable Set Lemma" due to Claude Berge and the "Clique Collection Lemma" due to András Hajnal.

An $H(n,q,w,t)$ design is considered as a collection of $(n-w)$-faces of the hypercube $Q^n_q$ perfectly piercing all $(n-t)$-faces. We define an $A(n,q,w,t)$ design as a collection of $(n-t)$-faces of hypercube $Q^n_q$ perfectly cowering all $(n-w)$-faces. The numbers of H- and A-designs are expressed in terms of multidimensional permanent. We present several constructions of H- and A-design and prove the existence of $H(2^{t+1},s2^t,2^{t+1}-1,2^{t+1}-2)$ designs for every $s,t\geq 1$.
