A Unified Partial and Mock Theta Function
Published • View PublicationBIB
Unary theta functions have played a significant role in the theory of holomorphic modular forms and modular $L$-functions. A partial theta functions is defined analogously, but the sum is over part of the integer lattice. Such sums fail to have modular properties. We give a construction which unifies these partial theta functions with the mock theta function introduced by Ramanujan. The modularity of Ramanujan's mock theta functions has only recently been understood by the work of Sander Zwegers.
Partial theta functions and mock modular forms as q-hypergeometric series
Published • View PublicationBIB
Ramanujan studied the analytic properties of many $q$-hypergeometric series. Of those, mock theta functions have been particularly intriguing, and by work of Zwegers, we now know how these curious $q$-series fit into the theory of automorphic forms. The analytic theory of partial theta functions however, which have $q$-expansions resembling modular theta functions, is not well understood. Here we consider families of $q$-hypergeometric series which converge in two disjoint domains. In one domain, we show that these series are often equal to one another, and define mock theta functions, including the classical mock theta functions of Ramanujan, as well as certain combinatorial generating functions, as special cases. In the other domain, we prove that these series are typically not equal to one another, but instead are related by partial theta functions.

Partition Identities for Ramanujan's Third Order Mock Theta Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We find two involutions on partitions that lead to partition identities for Ramanujan's third order mock theta functions $φ(-q)$ and $ψ(-q)$. We also give an involution for Fine's partition identity on the mock theta function f(q). The two classical identities of Ramanujan on third order mock theta functions are consequences of these partition identities. Our combinatorial constructions also apply to Andrews' generalizations of Ramanujan's identities.

On identities involving the sixth order mock theta functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present q-series proofs of four identities involving sixth order mock theta functions from Ramanujan's lost notebook. We also show how Ramanujan's identities can be used to give a quick proof of four sixth order identities of Berndt and Chan.

M_2-rank differences for overpartitions
Published in Acta Arithmetica 144 (2010), 193-212 • View PublicationBIB
This is the third and final installment in our series of papers applying the method of Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer to deduce formulas for rank differences. The study of rank differences was initiated by Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer in their proof of Dyson's conjectures concerning Ramanujan's congruences for the partition function. Since then, other types of rank differences for statistics associated to partitions have been investigated. In this paper, we prove explicit formulas for M_2-rank differences for overpartitions. Additionally, we express a third order mock theta function in terms of rank differences.

Mock Jacobi forms in basic hypergeometric series
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that some $q$-series such as universal mock theta functions are linear sums of theta quotients and mock Jacobi forms of weight 1/2, which become holomorphic parts of real analytic modular forms when they are restricted to torsion points and multiplied by suitable powers of $q$. And we prove that certain linear sums of $q$-series are weakly holomorphic modular forms of weight 1/2 due to annihilation of mock Jacobi forms or completion by mock Jacobi forms. As an application, we obtain a relation between the rank and crank of a partition.

Partition statistics and quasiweak Maass forms
Published • View PublicationBIB
Andrews recently introduced k-marked Durfee symbols, which are a generalization of partitions that are connected to moments of Dyson's rank statistic. He used these connections to find identities relating their generating functions as well as to prove Ramanujan-type congruences for these objects and find relations between. In this paper we show that the hypergeometric generating functions for these objects are natural examples of quasimock theta functions, which are defined as the holomorphic parts of weak Maass forms and their derivatives. In particular, these generating functions may be viewed as analogs of Ramanujan's mock theta functions with arbitrarily high weight. We use the automorphic properties to prove the existence of infinitely many congruences for the Durfee symbols. Furthermore, we show that as k varies, the modularity of the k-marked Durfee symbols is precisely dictated by the case k=2. Finally, we use this relation in order to prove the existence of general congruences for rank moments in terms of level one modular forms of bounded weight.
Automorphic properties of generating functions for generalized rank moments and Durfee symbols
Published in IMRN, no. 2, (2010), 238-260 • View PublicationBIB
We define two-parameter generalizations of two combinatorial constructions of Andrews: the kth symmetrized rank moment and the k-marked Durfee symbol. We prove that three specializations of the associated generating functions are so-called quasimock theta functions, while a fourth specialization gives quasimodular forms. We then define a two-parameter generalization of Andrews' smallest parts function and note that this leads to quasimock theta functions as well. The automorphic properties are deduced using q-series identities relating the relevant generating functions to known mock theta functions.
