Copartitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop the theory of copartitions, which are a generalization of partitions with connections to many classical topics in partition theory, including Rogers-Ramanujan partitions, theta functions, mock theta functions, partitions with parts separated by parity, and crank statistics. Using both analytic and combinatorial methods, we give two forms of the three-parameter generating function, and we study several special cases that demonstrate the potential broader impact the study of copartitions may have.

Generalizations of Dyson's Rank on Overpartitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a statistic on overpartitions called the $\overline{k}$-rank. When there are no overlined parts, this coincides with the $k$-rank of a partition introduced by Garvan. Moreover, it reduces to the D-rank of an overpartition when $k=2$. The generating function for the $\overline{k}$-rank of overpartitions is given. We also establish a relation between the generating function of self-3-conjugate overpartitions and the tenth order mock theta functions $X(q)$ and $χ(q)$.

Generalizations of the Andrews-Yee identities associated with the mock theta functions $ω(q)$ and $ν(q)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
George Andrews and Ae Ja Yee recently established beautiful results involving bivariate generalizations of the third order mock theta functions $ω(q)$ and $ν(q)$, thereby extending their earlier results with the second author. Generalizing the Andrews-Yee identities for trivariate generalizations of these mock theta functions remained a mystery, as pointed out by Li and Yang in their recent work. We partially solve this problem and generalize these identities. Several new as well as well-known results are derived. For example, one of our two main theorems gives, as a corollary, a special case of Soon-Yi Kang's three-variable reciprocity theorem. A relation between a new restricted overpartition function $p^{*}(n)$ and a weighted partition function $p_*(n)$ is obtained from one of the special cases of our second theorem.

Andrews-Beck Type Congruences Related to the Crank of a Partition
In this paper, we discuss a few recent conjectures made by George Beck related to the ranks and cranks of partitions. The conjectures for the rank of a partition were proved by Andrews by using results due to Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer on a suitable generating function, while the conjectures related to cranks were studied by Shane Chern using weighted partition moments. We revisit the conjectures on the crank of a partition by decomposing the relevant generating function and further explore connections with Apple-Lerch series and tenth order mock theta functions.

Congruences modulo powers of 5 for the rank parity function
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is well known that Ramanujan conjectured congruences modulo powers of 5, 7 and and 11 for the partition function. These were subsequently proved by Watson (1938) and Atkin (1967). In 2009 Choi, Kang, and Lovejoy proved congruences modulo powers of 5 for the crank parity function. The generating function for rank parity function is f(q), which is the first example of a mock theta function that Ramanujan mentioned in his last letter to Hardy. We prove congruences modulo powers of 5 for the rank parity function.

A proof of the mod $4$ unimodal sequence conjectures and related mock theta functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2012 Bryson, Ono, Pitman and Rhoades showed how the generating functions for certain strongly unimodal sequences are related to quantum modular and mock modular forms. They proved some parity results and conjectured some mod 4 congruences for the coefficients of these generating functions. In 2016 Kim, Lim and Lovejoy obtained similar results for odd-balanced unimodal sequences and made similar mod 4 conjectures. We prove all of these mod 4 conjectures and similar congruences for the Andrews spt-function and related mock theta functions. Our method of proof involves new Hecke-Rogers type identities for indefinite binary quadratic forms and the Hurwitz class number.

Several new product identities in relation to two-variable Rogers-Ramanujan type sums and mock theta functions
Published in Res. Math. Sci. 8.1 (2021): 16 • View PublicationBIB
Product identities in two variables $x, q$ expand infinite products as infinite sums, which are linear combinations of theta functions; famous examples include Jacobi's triple product identity, Watson's quintuple identity, and Hirschhorn's septuple identity. We view these series expansions as representations in canonical bases of certain vector spaces of quasiperiodic meromorphic functions (related to sections of line and vector bundles), and find new identities for two nonuple products, an undecuple product, and several two-variable Rogers-Ramanujan type sums. Our main theorem explains a correspondence between the septuple product identity and the two original Rogers-Ramanujan identities, involving two-variable analogues of fifth-order mock theta functions. We also prove a similar correspondence between an octuple product identity of Ewell and two simpler variations of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities, which is related to third-order mock theta functions, and conjecture other occurrences of this phenomenon. As applications, we specialize our results to obtain identities for quotients of generalized Dedekind eta functions and mock theta functions.

Eulerian series, zeta functions and the arithmetic of partitions
In this Ph.D. dissertation (2018, Emory University) we prove theorems at the intersection of the additive and multiplicative branches of number theory, bringing together ideas from partition theory, $q$-series, algebra, modular forms and analytic number theory. We present a natural multiplicative theory of integer partitions (which are usually considered in terms of addition), and explore new classes of partition-theoretic zeta functions and Dirichlet series -- as well as "Eulerian" $q$-hypergeometric series -- enjoying many interesting relations. We find a number of theorems of classical number theory and analysis arise as particular cases of extremely general combinatorial structure laws. Among our applications, we prove explicit formulas for the coefficients of the $q$-bracket of Bloch-Okounkov, a partition-theoretic operator from statistical physics related to quasi-modular forms; we prove partition formulas for arithmetic densities of certain subsets of the integers, giving $q$-series formulas to evaluate the Riemann zeta function; we study $q$-hypergeometric series related to quantum modular forms and the "strange" function of Kontsevich; and we show how Ramanujan's odd-order mock theta functions (and, more generally, the universal mock theta function $g_3$ of Gordon-McIntosh) arise from the reciprocal of the Jacobi triple product via the $q$-bracket operator, connecting also to unimodal sequences in combinatorics and quantum modular-like phenomena.

A Bijection Between Two Different Classes of Partitions Enumerated by $p_ν(n)$
In this paper, we give a purely bijective proof that two different partition classes that are both combinatorial interpretations of the partition function $p_ν(n)$, a partition function related to the third order mock theta function $ν(q)$, are equinumerous. In doing so, we give a partial solution to a combinatorial problem proposed in a paper by Andrews.

Congruences for the coefficients of the Gordon and McIntosh mock theta function $ξ(q)$
Published in Ramanujan Journal 58, no. 3 (2022), 815-834 • View PublicationBIB
Recently Gordon and McIntosh introduced the third order mock theta function $ξ(q)$ defined by $$ ξ(q)=1+2\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{q^{6n^2-6n+1}}{(q;q^6)_{n}(q^5;q^6)_{n}}. $$ Our goal in this paper is to study arithmetic properties of the coefficients of this function. We present a number of such properties, including several infinite families of Ramanujan--like congruences.

Parity of coefficients of mock theta functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the parity of coefficients of classical mock theta functions. Suppose $g$ is a formal power series with integer coefficients, and let $c(g;n)$ be the coefficient of $q^n$ in its series expansion. We say that $g$ is of parity type $(a,1-a)$ if $c(g;n)$ takes even values with probability $a$ for $n\geq 0$. We show that among the 44 classical mock theta functions, 21 of them are of parity type $(1,0)$. We further conjecture that 19 mock theta functions are of parity type $(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2})$ and 4 functions are of parity type $(\frac{3}{4},\frac{1}{4})$. We also give characterizations of $n$ such that $c(g;n)$ is odd for the mock theta functions of parity type $(1,0)$.

On Sum-Of-Tails Identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article, a finite analogue of the generalized sum-of-tails identity of Andrews and Freitas is obtained. We derive several interesting results as special cases of this analogue, in particular, a recent identity of Dixit, Eyyyunni, Maji and Sood. We derive a new extension of Abel's lemma with the help of which we obtain a one-parameter generalization of a sum-of-tails identity of Andrews, Garvan and Liang, an identity of Ramanujan as well as two new results - one for Ramanujan's function $σ(q)$ and another for the function recently introduced by Andrews and Ballantine. Later we introduce a new generalization $\mathrm{FFW}_{c}(n)$ of a function of Fokkink, Fokkink and Wang and derive an identity for its generating function. This gives, as a special case, a recent representation for the generating function of $\mathrm{spt}(n)$ given by Andrews, Garvan and Liang. We also obtain some weighted partition identities along with new representations for two of Ramanujan's third order mock theta functions through combinatorial techniques.

New fifth and seventh order mock theta function identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give simple proofs of Hecke-Rogers indefinite binary theta series identities for the two Ramanujan fifth order mock theta functions $χ_0(q)$ and $χ_1(q)$ and all three of Ramanujan's seventh order mock theta functions. We find that the coefficients of the three mock theta functions of order 7 are surprisingly related.

Partitions and the maximal excludant
For each nonempty integer partition $π$, we define the maximal excludant of $π$ to be the largest nonnegative integer smaller than the largest part of $π$ that is not a part of $π$. Let $σ\!\operatorname{maex}(n)$ be the sum of maximal excludants over all partitions of $n$. We show that the generating function of $σ\!\operatorname{maex}(n)$ is closely related to a mock theta function studied by Andrews \textit{et al.} and Cohen. Further, we show that, as $n\to \infty$, $σ\!\operatorname{maex}(n)$ is asymptotic to the sum of largest parts of all partitions of $n$. Finally, the expectation of the difference of the largest part and the maximal excludant over all partitions of $n$ is shown to converge to $1$ as $n\to \infty$.

The smallest parts function associated with $ω(q)$
We establish two families of congruences modulo powers of 5 for the Fourier coefficients of $(2E_2(2τ)-E_2(τ))η(2τ)^{-1}$, where $E_2(τ)$ is the weight 2 Eisenstein series and $η(τ)$ is the Dedekind eta function. This allows us to prove similar congruences for two smallest parts functions. The first function is $\mathrm{spt}_ω(n)$, which was introduced by Andrews, Dixit and Yee and associated with Ramanujan/Watson's third order mock theta function $ω(q)$. The second one is $\mathrm{spt}_{C5}(n)$, which appeared in the work of Garvan and Jennings-Shaffer. Moreover, we confirm two conjectural congruences of Wang.

Four identities related to third order mock theta functions
Ramanujan presented four identities for third order mock theta functions in his Lost Notebook. In 2005, with the aid of complex analysis, Yesilyurt first proved these four identities. Recently, Andrews et al. provided different proofs by using $q$-series. In this paper, in view of some identities of a universal mock theta function \begin{align*} g(x;q)=x^{-1}\left(-1+\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{q^{n^{2}}}{(x;q)_{n+1}(qx^{-1};q)_{n}}\right), \end{align*} we establish new proofs of these four identities. In particular, by means of an identity of $g(x;q)$ given by Ramanujan and some theta function identities due to Mortenson, we find a new simple proof of the fourth identity.

Representations of mock theta functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the works of Liu, we provide a unified approach to find Appell-Lerch series and Hecke-type series representations for mock theta functions. We establish a number of parameterized identities with two parameters $a$ and $b$. Specializing the choices of $(a,b)$, we not only give various known and new representations for the mock theta functions of orders 2, 3, 5, 6 and 8, but also present many other interesting identities. We find that some mock theta functions of different orders are related to each other, in the sense that their representations can be deduced from the same $(a,b)$-parameterized identity. Furthermore, we introduce the concept of false Appell-Lerch series. We then express the Appell-Lerch series, false Appell-Lerch series and Hecke-type series in this paper using the building blocks $m(x,q,z)$ and $f_{a,b,c}(x,y,q)$ introduced by Hickerson and Mortenson, as well as $\overline{m}(x,q,z)$ and $\overline{f}_{a,b,c}(x,y,q)$ introduced in this paper. We also show the equivalences of our new representations for several mock theta functions and the known representations.

$M_2$-Ranks of overpartitions modulo $6$ and $10$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we obtain inequalities on $M_2$-ranks of overpartitions modulo $6$. Let $\overline{N}_2(s,m,n)$ to be the number of overpartitions of $n$ whose $M_2$-rank is congruent to $s$ modulo $m$. For $M_2$-ranks modulo $3$, Lovejoy and Osburn derived the generating function of $\overline{N}_2(s,3,n)-\overline{N}_2(t,3,n)$, which implies the inequalities $\overline{N}_2(0,3,n)\geq\overline{N}_2(1,3,n)$. For $\ell=6, 10$, we consider the generating function $\overline{R}_{s,t}(d,\ell)$ of the $M_2$-rank differences $\overline{N}_2(s,\ell,\ell n/2+d) + \overline{N}_2(s+1,\ell,\ell n/2+d) - \overline{N}_2(t,\ell,\ell n/2+d) - \overline{N}_2(t+1,\ell,\ell n/2+d)$. By the method of Lovejoy and Osburn, we derive a formula for $\overline{R}_{0,2}(d,6)$. This leads to the inequalities for $n\geq0$, $\overline{N}_2(0,6,3n)\geq\overline{N}_2(2,6,3n)$ and $\overline{N}_2(0,6,3n+1) \geq \overline{N}_2(2,6,3n+1)$. Based on the valence formula for modular functions, we compute $\overline{R}_{0,4}(d,10)$ and $\overline{R}_{1,3}(d,10)$. In particular, we notice that the generating function $\overline{R}_{0,2}(2,6)$ can be expressed in terms of the third order mock theta function $ρ(q)$, and the generating functions $\overline{R}_{0,4}(4,10)$, $\overline{R}_{1,3}(1,10)$ and $\overline{R}_{1,3}(4,10)$ can also be expressed in terms of the tenth order mock theta functions $φ(q)$ and $ψ(q)$.

Further results on Andrews--Yee's two identities for mock theta functions $ω(z;q)$ and $v(z;q)$

In this paper, by the method of comparing coefficients and the inverse technique, we establish the corresponding variate forms of two identities of Andrews and Yee for mock theta functions, as well as a few allied but unusual $q$-series identities. Among includes a new Bailey pair from which a product formula of two ${}_2φ_1$ series is derived. Further, we focus on two finite $q$-series summations arising from Andrews and Yee's mock theta function identities and expound some recurrence relations and transformation formulas behind them.

Combinatorial proofs for identities related to generalizations of the mock theta functions $ω(q)$ and $ν(q)$
Published in The Ramanujan Journal, 2019 • View PublicationBIB
The two partition functions $p_ω(n)$ and $p_ν(n)$ were introduced by Andrews, Dixit and Yee, which are related to the third order mock theta functions $ω(q)$ and $ν(q)$, respectively. Recently, Andrews and Yee analytically studied two identities that connect the refinements of $p_ω(n)$ and $p_ν(n)$ with the generalized bivariate mock theta functions $ω(z;q)$ and $ν(z;q)$, respectively. However, they stated these identities cried out for bijective proofs. In this paper, we first define the generalized trivariate mock theta functions $ω(y,z;q)$ and $ν(y,z;q)$. Then by utilizing odd Ferrers graph, we obtain certain identities concerning to $ω(y,z;q)$ and $ν(y,z;q)$, which extend some early results of Andrews that are related to $ω(z;q)$ and $ν(z;q)$. In virtue of the combinatorial interpretations that arise from the identities involving $ω(y,z;q)$ and $ν(y,z;q)$, we finally present bijective proofs for the two identities of Andrews-Yee.
