Undecidability of Translational Tiling of the Plane with Orthogonally Convex Polyominoes
The first undecidability result on the tiling is the undecidability of translational tiling of the plane with Wang tiles, where there is an additional color matching requirement. Later, researchers obtained several undecidability results on translational tiling problems where the tilings are subject to the geometric shapes of the tiles only. However, all these results are proved by constructing tiles with extremely concave shapes. It is natural to ask: can we obtain undecidability results of translational tiling with convex tiles? Towards answering this question, we prove the undecidability of translational tiling of the plane with a set of 7 orthogonally convex polyominoes.
On kernel isomorphisms of $m$-Cayley digraphs and finite $2$PCI-groups
The isomorphism problem for digraphs is a fundamental problem in graph theory. In this paper, we consider this problem for $m$-Cayley digraphs which are generalization of Cayley digraphs. Let $m$ be a positive integer. A digraph admitting a group $G$ of automorphisms acting semiregularly on the vertices with exactly $m$ orbits is called an $m$-Cayley digraph of $G$. In our previous paper, we developed a theory for $m$-Cayley isomorphisms of $m$-Cayley digraphs, and classified finite $m$CI-groups for each $m\geq 2$, and finite $m$PCI-groups for each $m\geq 4$. The next natural step is to classify finite $m$PCI-groups for $m=2$ or $3$. Note that BCI-groups form an important subclass of the $2$PCI-groups, which were introduced in 2008 by Xu et al. Despite much effort having been made on the study of BCI-groups, the problem of classifying finite BCI-groups is still widely open. In this paper, we prove that every finite $2$PCI-group is solvable, and its Sylow $3$-subgroup is isomorphic to $Z_3, Z_3\times Z_3$ or $Z_9$, and Sylow $p$-subgroup with $p\not=3$ is either elementary abelian, or isomorphic to $Z_4$ or $Q_8$. We also introduce the kernel isomorphisms of $m$-Cayley digraphs, and establish some useful theory for studying this kind of isomorphisms. Using the results of kernel isomorphisms of $m$-Cayley digraphs together with the results on $2$PCI-groups, we give a proper description of finite BCI-groups, and in particular, we obtain a complete classification of finite non-abelian BCI-groups.

Social Networks: Enumerating Maximal Community Patterns in $c$-Closed Graphs
Jacob Fox, C. Seshadhri, Tim Roughgarden, Fan Wei, and Nicole Wein introduced the model of $c$-closed graphs--a distribution-free model motivated by triadic closure, one of the most pervasive structural signatures of social networks. While enumerating maximal cliques in general graphs can take exponential time, it is known that in $c$-closed graphs, maximal cliques and maximal complete bipartite subgraphs can always be enumerated in polynomial time. These structures correspond to blow-ups of simple patterns: a single vertex or a single edge, with some vertices required to form cliques. In this work, we explore a natural extension: we study maximal blow-ups of arbitrary finite graphs $H$ in $c$-closed graphs. We prove that for any fixed graph $H$, the number of maximal blow-ups of $H$ in an $n$-vertex $c$-closed graph is always bounded by a polynomial in $n$. We further investigate the case of induced blow-ups and provide a precise characterization of the graphs $H$ for which the number of maximal induced blow-ups is also polynomially bounded in $n$. Finally, we study the analogue questions when $H$ ranges over an infinite family of graphs.

The multinomial dimer model
An $N$-dimer cover of a graph is a collection of edges (with multiplicity) such that each vertex is contained in exactly $N$ edges in the collection. The multinomial dimer model is a natural probability measure on $N$-dimer covers. We study the behavior of these measures on periodic bipartite graphs in ${\mathbb R}^d$, in the scaling limit as the multiplicity $N$ and then the size of the graph go to infinity. In this iterated limit, we prove a large deviation principle, where the rate function is the integral of an explicit surface tension, and show that random configurations concentrate on a limit shape which is the unique solution to an associated Euler-Lagrange equation. We further show that the associated critical gauge functions, which exist in the $N\to\infty$ limit on each finite graph, converge in the scaling limit to a limiting gauge function which solves a dual Euler-Lagrange equation. We use our techniques to compute explicit limit shapes in some two and three dimensional examples, such as the Aztec diamond and ``Aztec cuboid". These $3d$ examples are the first stat mech models in dimensions $d\ge3$ where limit shapes can be computed explicitly.
Oriented hypergraphs and generalizing the Harary-Sachs theorem to integer matrices
Incidence-based generalizations of cycle covers, called contributors, extend the Harary-Sachs coefficient theorem for characteristic polynomials of the adjacency matrix of graphs. All minors of the Laplacian resulting from an integer matrix are characterized using their associated oriented hypergraph through a new minimal collection of contributors to produce the coefficients of the total-minor polynomial. We prove that the natural grouping of contributors via tail-equivalence is necessarily cancellative for any contributor family that reuses an edge. We then provide a new combinatorial proof on the non-0 isospectrality of the traditional characteristic polynomials of the Laplacian and its dual.

Large Deviations for Markovian Graphon Processes and Associated Dynamical Systems on Networks
We consider temporal models of rapidly changing Markovian networks modulated by time-evolving spatially dependent kernels that define rates for edge formation and dissolution. Alternatively, these can be viewed as Markovian networks with $O(1)$ jump rates viewed over a long time horizon. In the regimes we consider, the window averages of graphon valued processes over suitable time intervals are natural state descriptors for the system. Under appropriate conditions on the jump-rate kernels, we establish laws of large numbers and large deviation principles(LDP) for the graphon processes averaged over a suitable time window, both in the weak topology and with respect to the cut norm in the associated graphon space. Although the problem setting and analysis are more involved than for the well-studied static random network model, the variational problem associated with the rate function admits an explicit solution, yielding an equally tractable, though different, expression for the rate function, similar to the static case. Using these results, we then establish the LDP for node-valent dynamical systems driven by the underlying evolving network.

The connection between the chromatic function and the Redei-Berge function
There is a natural way to assign both graph and digraph to every poset. Furthermore, any graph has its chromatic function, while any digraph has its Redei-Berge function. On the level of posets, these two functions are almost identical. Here, we prove that this connection is actually a reflection of the connection between the noncommutative generalizations of these two functions. The simplicity of this relationship enables us to easily translate the properties proved for one of them to the case of the other. We perform such conversions regarding distinguishability, decomposition techniques and positivity questions. Among others, we obtain the converse of Redei's theorem, generalization of the triple deletion property and expressions for these functions in some special cases.

Preorders on maximal chains: hyperplane arrangements, Cambrian lattices, and maximal green sequences
We study preorders on (equivalence classes of) maximal chains in the general context of polygonal lattices endowed with suitably nice edge labellings. We show that, given a quotient of polygonal lattices, such edge labellings descend to the quotient, and that there is an induced order-preserving surjective map on the preordered sets of equivalence classes of maximal chains. Under a natural condition ensuring that the domain is a poset, the map is a contraction of preordered sets. We apply this to lattices of regions of simplicial hyperplane arrangements, where the preorders are partial orders, in particular to finite Coxeter arrangements. For the latter, each choice of Coxeter element gives us a different partial order on the set of equivalence classes of maximal chains; these generalise certain reoriented higher Bruhat orders in dimension two. The maps of posets of maximal chains induced by Cambrian congruences generalise the map of Kapranov and Voevodsky from the higher Bruhat orders to the higher Stasheff--Tamari orders in dimension two. While the fibres of this map are known not always to be intervals, our results show that they are always connected. We show that, in the case of Cambrian lattices, the induced maps on maximal chains have nice descriptions in terms of orientations of rank-two root subsystems, in a way which resembles taking the stable objects of a Rudakov stability condition. We finally consider the algebraic realisation of the weak order and Cambrian lattices via torsion-free classes of preprojective and path algebras, relating the posets of maximal chains to our earlier work on maximal green sequences.

Uniform Šoltés' hypergraphs and Šoltés' weighted graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A Šoltés' hypergraph is a hypergraph for which the removal of any of its vertices does not change its total distance. We prove that every uniform Šoltés' hypergraph has order at least $10$, there exist uniform Šoltés' hypergraphs for almost every order or uniformity, and there exist a non-regular uniform Šoltés' hypergraph. By also providing infinitely many weighted Šoltés' graphs, we conclude that Šoltés' problem can be answered positively for the most natural generalisations of graphs.

Sperner's colorings of hypergraphs arising from edgewise triangulations
We investigate Sperner's labelings of $H^π_{k,q}$, the hypergraph whose hyperedges are facets of the edgewise triangulation of a $(k-1)$-simplex defined by a permutation $π\in \mathbb{S}_{k-1}$. Mirzakhani and Vondr\' ak showed that the greedy coloring of $H^{\mathrm{Id}}_{k,q}$ produces the maximal number of monochromatic hyperedges. The line graph of $H_{k,q}^π$ is built from the copies of the graph $G_π$ that represents which subsets of consecutive numbers of $[k-1]$ are contiguous in $π$. We characterize these graphs in terms of dissections a regular $k$-gon and also show how they encode the adjacency relation between a hypersimplex and the facets of its alcoved triangulation. The natural action of the dihedral group $D_k$ on a regular $k$-gon and graphs $G_π$ extends on the group of permutations $\mathbb S_{k-1}$. Independent sets of the graphs $G_π$ of the permutations that are not invariant under the rotation are used to define a class of Sperner's colorings that produce more monochromatic hyperedges then the greedy colorings. This colorings are also optimal for a certain permutations.
CNFs and DNFs with Exactly $k$ Solutions
Model counting is a fundamental problem that consists of determining the number of satisfying assignments for a given Boolean formula. The weighted variant, which computes the weighted sum of satisfying assignments, has extensive applications in probabilistic reasoning, network reliability, statistical physics, and formal verification. A common approach for solving weighted model counting is to reduce it to unweighted model counting, which raises an important question: {\em What is the minimum number of terms (or clauses) required to construct a DNF (or CNF) formula with exactly $k$ satisfying assignments?} In this paper, we establish both upper and lower bounds on this question. We prove that for any natural number $k$, one can construct a monotone DNF formula with exactly $k$ satisfying assignments using at most $O(\sqrt{\log k}\log\log k)$ terms. This construction represents the first $o(\log k)$ upper bound for this problem. We complement this result by showing that there exist infinitely many values of $k$ for which any DNF or CNF representation requires at least $Ω(\log\log k)$ terms or clauses. These results have significant implications for the efficiency of model counting algorithms based on formula transformations.

Ramanujan's partition generating functions modulo $\ell$
Published • View Publication • BIB
For the partition function $p(n)$, Ramanujan proved the striking identities $$ P_5(q):=\sum_{n\geq 0} p(5n+4)q^n =5\prod_{n\geq 1} \frac{\left(q^5;q^5\right)_{\infty}^5}{(q;q)_{\infty}^6}, $$ $$ P_7(q):=\sum_{n\geq 0} p(7n+5)q^n =7\prod_{n\geq 1}\frac{\left(q^7;q^7\right)_{\infty}^3}{(q;q)_{\infty}^4}+49q \prod_{n\geq 1}\frac{\left(q^7;q^7\right)_{\infty}^7}{(q;q)_{\infty}^8}, $$ where $(q;q)_{\infty}:=\prod_{n\geq 1}(1-q^n).$ As these identities imply his celebrated congruences modulo 5 and 7, it is natural to seek, for primes $\ell \geq 5,$ closed form expressions of the power series $$ P_{\ell}(q):=\sum_{n\geq 0} p(\ell n-δ_{\ell})q^n\pmod{\ell}, $$ where $δ_{\ell}:=\frac{\ell^2-1}{24}.$ In this paper, we prove that $$ P_{\ell}(q)\equiv c_{\ell} \frac{T_{\ell}(q)}{ (q^\ell; q^\ell )_\infty} \pmod{\ell}, $$ where $c_{\ell}\in \mathbb{Z}$ is explicit and $T_{\ell}(q)$ is the generating function for the Hecke traces of $\ell$-ramified values of special Dirichlet series for weight $\ell-1$ cusp forms on $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$. This is a new proof of Ramanujan's congruences modulo 5, 7, and 11, as there are no nontrivial cusp forms of weight 4, 6, and 10.
On 102-avoiding inversion sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article, we provide a bijection between the set of inversion sequences avoiding the pattern 102 and the set of 2-Schröder paths having neither peaks nor valleys and ending with a diagonal step. To achieve this, we introduce two intermediate objects, called UVD paths and labeled $F$-paths, and establish bijections among all four families. For each of these combinatorial objects, we define a natural statistic and enumerate the corresponding structures with respect to this statistic. In addition, we study inversion sequences avoiding 102 and another pattern of length 3, providing refined enumerations according to the same statistic.

Interpreting the (signed) chromatic polynomial coefficients via hyperplane arrangements
A recent result of Lofano and Paolini expresses the characteristic polynomial of a real hyperplane arrangement in terms of a projection statistic on the regions of the arrangement. We use this result to give an alternative proof for Greene and Zaslavsky's interpretation for the coefficients of the chromatic polynomial of a graph and further generalize this interpretation to signed graphs. We also show that this projection statistic has a nice combinatorial interpretation in the case of the braid arrangement, which generalizes to graphical arrangements of natural unit interval graphs.

A proof of the Fields Conjectures
The {\em superspace ring} of rank $n$ is the algebra $Ω_n$ of differential forms on affine $n$-space. The algebra $Ω_n$ is bigraded with respect to polynomial and exterior degree and carries a natural action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. Modding out by $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariants with vanishing constant term yields the {\em superspace coinvariant ring} $SR_n$. We prove that, as an ungraded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module, the space $SR_n$ is isomorphic to the sign-twisted permutation action of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on ordered set partitions of $\{1,\dots,n\}$. We refine this result by calculating the bigraded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-isomorphism type of $SR_n$. This proves the Fields Conjectures of N. Bergeron, L. Colmenarejo, S.-X. Li, J. Machacek, R. Sulzgruber, and M. Zabrocki as well as a related conjecture of V. Reiner.

Proof of the KAMAK tree conjecture
There are many intriguing questions in extremal graph theory that are well-understood in the undirected setting and yet remain elusive for digraphs. A natural instance of such a problem was recently studied by Hons, Klimošová, Kucheriya, Mikšaník, Tkadlec and Tyomkyn: What are the digraphs that have to appear as a subgraph in all digraphs of sufficiently large minimum out-degree? Hons et al. showed that all such digraphs must be oriented forests with a specific structure, and conjectured that vice-versa all oriented forests with this specific structure appear in any digraph of sufficiently large minimum out-degree. In this paper, we confirm their conjecture.

Diagonal Supersymmetry for Coinvariant Rings
For finite groups $G$, we show that bosonic-fermionic coinvariant rings have a natural $U(\mathfrak{gl}(k|j)) \otimes \mathbb{C}[G]$-module structure. In particular, we show that their character series are a sum of super Schur functions $s_λ(\mathbf{q}/\mathbf{u})$ times irreducible characters of $G$ with universal coefficients, which do not depend on $k,j$. In the case where $G$ is the symmetric group with diagonal action, this proves the "Diagonal Supersymmetry" conjecture of Bergeron (2020).

Efficient computation of complementary set partitions, with applications to an extension and estimation of generalized cumulants
This paper develops new combinatorial approaches to analyze and compute special set partitions, called complementary set partitions, which are fundamental in the study of generalized cumulants. Moving away from traditional graph-based and algebraic methods, a simple and fast algorithm is proposed to list complementary set partitions based on two-block partitions, making the computation more accessible and implementable also in non-symbolic programming languages like R. Computational comparisons in Maple demonstrate the efficiency of the proposal. Additionally the notion of generalized cumulant is extended using multiset subdivisions and multi-index partitions to include scenarios with repeated variables and to address more sophisticated dependence structures. A formula is provided that expresses generalized multivariate cumulants as linear combinations of multivariate cumulants, weighted by coefficients that admit a natural combinatorial interpretation. Finally, the introduction of dummy variables and specialized multi-index partitions enables an efficient procedure for estimating generalized multivariate cumulants with a substantial reduction in data power sums involved.

A Multigraph Characterization of Permutiple Strings
Published in Integers 25 (2025), #A111 • View Publication • BIB
A permutiple is a natural number whose representation in some base is an integer multiple of a number whose representation has the same collection of digits. A previous paper utilizes a finite-state-machine construction and its state graph to recognize permutiples and to generate new examples. Permutiples are associated with walks on the state graph which necessarily satisfy certain conditions. However, the above effort does not provide sufficient conditions for the existence of permutiples. In this paper, we provide such a condition which we will state using the language of multigraphs.

Ask zeta functions of joins of graphs
In previous work (arXiv:1908.09589), we studied rational generating functions ("ask zeta functions") associated with graphs and hypergraphs. These functions encode average sizes of kernels of generic matrices with support constraints determined by the graph or hypergraph in question, with applications to the enumeration of linear orbits and conjugacy classes of unipotent groups. In the present article, we turn to the effect of a natural graph-theoretic operation on associated ask zeta functions. Specifically, we show that two instances of rational functions, $W^-_Γ(X,T)$ and $W^\sharp_Γ(X,T)$, associated with a graph $Γ$ are both well-behaved under taking joins of graphs. In the former case, this has applications to zeta functions enumerating conjugacy classes associated with so-called graphical groups.
