Enumerating minimal solution sets for metric graph problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Problems from metric graph theory like Metric Dimension, Geodetic Set, and Strong Metric Dimension have recently had a strong impact in parameterized complexity by being the first known problems in NP to admit double-exponential lower bounds in the treewidth, and even in the vertex cover number for the latter, assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis. We initiate the study of enumerating minimal solution sets for these problems and show that they are also of great interest in enumeration. Specifically, we show that enumerating minimal resolving sets in graphs and minimal geodetic sets in split graphs are equivalent to enumerating minimal transversals in hypergraphs (denoted Trans-Enum), whose solvability in total-polynomial time is one of the most important open problems in algorithmic enumeration. This provides two new natural examples to a question that emerged in recent works: for which vertex (or edge) set graph property $Π$ is the enumeration of minimal (or maximal) subsets satisfying $Π$ equivalent to Trans-Enum? As very few properties are known to fit within this context -- namely, those related to minimal domination -- our results make significant progress in characterizing such properties, and provide new angles to approach Trans-Enum. In contrast, we observe that minimal strong resolving sets can be enumerated with polynomial delay. Additionally, we consider cases where our reductions do not apply, namely graphs with no long induced paths, and show both positive and negative results related to the enumeration and extension of partial solutions.

The number of realisations of a rigid graph in Euclidean and spherical geometries
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics 7, 2024 • View Publication • BIB
A graph is $d$-rigid if for any generic realisation of the graph in $\mathbb{R}^d$ (equivalently, the $d$-dimensional sphere $\mathbb{S}^d$), there are only finitely many non-congruent realisations in the same space with the same edge lengths. By extending this definition to complex realisations in a natural way, we define $c_d(G)$ to be the number of equivalent $d$-dimensional complex realisations of a $d$-rigid graph $G$ for a given generic realisation, and $c^*_d(G)$ to be the number of equivalent $d$-dimensional complex spherical realisations of $G$ for a given generic spherical realisation. Somewhat surprisingly, these two realisation numbers are not always equal. Recently developed algorithms for computing realisation numbers determined that the inequality $c_2(G) \leq c_2^*(G)$ holds for any minimally 2-rigid graph $G$ with 12 vertices or less. In this paper we confirm that, for any dimension $d$, the inequality $c_d(G) \leq c_d^*(G)$ holds for every $d$-rigid graph $G$. This result is obtained via new techniques involving coning, the graph operation that adds an extra vertex adjacent to all original vertices of the graph.

On the Reduced Gröbner Bases of Blockwise Determinantal Ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Blockwise determinantal ideals are those generated by the union of all the minors of specified sizes in certain blocks of a generic matrix, and they are the natural generalization of many existing determinantal ideals like the Schubert and ladder ones. In this paper we establish several criteria to verify whether the Gröbner bases of blockwise determinantal ideals with respect to (anti-)diagonal term orders are minimal or reduced. In particular, for Schubert determinantal ideals, while all the elusive minors form the reduced Gröbner bases when the defining permutations are vexillary, in the non-vexillary case we derive an explicit formula for computing the reduced Gröbner basis from elusive minors which avoids all algebraic operations. The fundamental properties of being normal and strong for W-characteristic sets and characteristic pairs, which are heavily connected to the reduced Gröbner bases, of Schubert determinantal ideals are also proven.

Packing mixed hyperarborescences
Published • View Publication • BIB
The aim of this paper is twofold. We first provide a new orientation theorem which gives a natural and simple proof of a result of Gao, Yang \cite{GY} on matroid-reachability-based packing of mixed arborescences in mixed graphs by reducing it to the corresponding theorem of Cs. Király \cite{cskir} on directed graphs. Moreover, we extend another result of Gao, Yang \cite{GY2} by providing a new theorem on mixed hypergraphs having a packing of mixed hyperarborescences such that their number is at least $\ell$ and at most $\ell'$, each vertex belongs to exactly $k$ of them, and each vertex $v$ is the root of least $f(v)$ and at most $g(v)$ of them.

A deletion-contraction formula and monotonicity properties for the polymatroid Tutte polynomial
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Tutte polynomial is a crucial invariant of matroids. The polymatroid Tutte polynomial $\mathscr{T}_{P}(x,y)$, introduced by Bernardi et al., is an extension of the classical Tutte polynomial from matroids to polymatroids $P$. In this paper, we first obtain a deletion-contraction formula for $\mathscr{T}_{P}(x,y)$. Then we prove two natural monotonicity properties, for containment and for minors of the interior polynomial $x^{n}\mathscr{T}_{P}(x^{-1},1)$ and the exterior polynomial $y^{n}\mathscr{T}_{P}(1,y^{-1})$, for polymatroids $P$ over $[n]$. We show by a counter-example that these monotonicity properties do not extend to $\mathscr{T}_{P}(x,y)$. Using deletion-contraction, we obtain formulas for the coefficients of terms of degree $n-1$ in $\mathscr{T}_{P}(x,y)$. Finally, for all $k\geq 0$, we characterize hypergraphs $\mathcal{H}=(V,E)$ so that the coefficient of $y^{k}$ in the exterior polynomial of the associated polymatroid $P_{\mathcal{H}}$ attains its maximal value $\binom{|V|+k-2}{k}$.
Query complexity of Boolean functions on the middle slice of the cube
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the query complexity on slices of Boolean functions. Among other results we show that there exists a Boolean function for which we need to query all but 7 input bits to compute its value, even if we know beforehand that the number of 0's and 1's in the input are the same, i.e., when our input is from the middle slice. This answers a question of Byramji. Our proof is non-constructive, but we also propose a concrete candidate function that might have the above property. Our results are related to certain natural discrepancy type questions that, somewhat surprisingly, have not been studied before.
The Reversed Zeckendorf Game
Published • View Publication • BIB
Zeckendorf proved that every natural number $n$ can be expressed uniquely as a sum of non-consecutive Fibonacci numbers, called its Zeckendorf decomposition. Baird-Smith, Epstein, Flint, and Miller created the Zeckendorf game, a two-player game played on partitions of $n$ into Fibonacci numbers which always terminates at a Zeckendorf decomposition, and proved that Player 2 has a winning strategy for $n\geq 3$. Since their proof was non-constructive, other authors have studied the game to find a constructive winning strategy, and lacking success there turned to related problems. For example, Cheigh, Moura, Jeong, Duke, Milgrim, Miller, and Ngamlamai studied minimum and maximum game lengths and randomly played games. We explore a new direction and introduce the reversed Zeckendorf game, which starts at the ending state of the Zeckendorf game and flips all the moves, so the reversed game ends with all pieces in the first bin. We show that Player 1 has a winning strategy for $n = F_{i+1} + F_{i-2}$ and solve various modified games.
Transitive and Gallai colorings
Published • View Publication • BIB
A Gallai coloring of the complete graph is an edge-coloring with no rainbow triangle. This concept first appeared in the study of comparability graphs and anti-Ramsey theory. We introduce a transitive analogue for acyclic directed graphs, and generalize both notions to Coxeter systems, matroids and commutative algebras. It is shown that for any finite matroid (or oriented matroid), the maximal number of colors is equal to the matroid rank. This generalizes a result of Erdős-Simonovits-Sós for complete graphs. The number of Gallai (or transitive) colorings of the matroid that use at most $k$ colors is a polynomial in $k$. Also, for any acyclic oriented matroid, represented over the real numbers, the number of transitive colorings using at most 2 colors is equal to the number of chambers in the dual hyperplane arrangement. We count Gallai and transitive colorings of the root system of type A using the maximal number of colors, and show that, when equipped with a natural descent set map, the resulting quasisymmetric function is symmetric and Schur-positive.
Fast winning strategies in a generalized van der Waerden game
Consider the following Maker-Breaker game. Fix a finite subset $S\subset\mathbb{N}$ of the naturals. The players Maker and Breaker take turns choosing previously unclaimed natural numbers. Maker wins by eventually building a homothetic copy $aS+b$ of $S$, where $a\in\mathbb{N}\setminus\{0\}$ and $b\in\mathbb{Z}$. This is a generalization of the van der Waerden game analyzed by Beck. By the Hales-Jewett theorem, there exists a constant $c$ depending only on $|S|$ such that Maker can win in $c$ or less moves. We show that Maker can win in $|S|$ moves if $|S|\leq 3$. When $|S|=4$, we show that Maker can always win in $5$ or less moves and describe all $S$ such that Maker can win in $4$ moves. If $|S|\geq 5$, Maker has no winning strategy in $|S|$ moves.

On the arithmetic Hilbert depth
Let $h:\mathbb Z \to \mathbb Z_{\geq 0}$ be a nonzero function with $h(k)=0$ for $k\ll 0$. We define the Hilbert depth of $h$ by $\operatorname{hdepth}(h)=\max\{d\;:\; \sum_{j\leq k} (-1)^{k-j}\binom{d-j}{k-j}h(j)\geq 0\text{ for all }k\leq d\}$. We show that $\operatorname{hdepth}(h)$ is a natural generalization for the Hilbert depth of a subposet $\operatorname{P}\subset 2^{[n]}$ and we prove some basic properties of it. Given $h(j)=\begin{cases} aj^n+b,& j\geq 0 \\ 0, & j<0 \end{cases}$, with $a,b,n$ positive integers, we compute $\operatorname{hdepth}(h)$ for $n=1,2$ and we give upper bounds for $\operatorname{hdepth}(h)$ for $n\geq 3$. More generally, if $h(j)=\begin{cases} P(j),& j\geq 0 \\ 0,& j<0 \end{cases}$, where $P(j)$ is a polynomial of degree $n$, with non-negative integer coefficients, and $P(0)>0$, we show that $\operatorname{hdepth}(h)\leq 2^{n+1}$.
Convex Embeddability and Knot Theory
Published in Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 378 (2025), 2745-2796 • View Publication • BIB
We consider countable linear orders and study the quasi-order of convex embeddability and its induced equivalence relation. We obtain both combinatorial and descriptive set-theoretic results, and further extend our research to the case of circular orders. These results are then applied to the study of arcs and knots, establishing combinatorial properties and lower bounds (in terms of Borel reducibility) for the complexity of some natural relations between these geometrical objects.

The externally definable Ramsey property and fixed points on type spaces
Published in Arch. Math. Logic, 64 (2025), no. 3, 605-635 • View Publication • BIB
We discuss the externally definable Ramsey property, a weakening of the Ramsey property for ultrahomogeneous structures, where the only colourings considered are those that are externally definable: that is, definable with parameters in an elementary extension. We show a number of basic results analogous to the classical Ramsey theory, and show that, for an ultrahomogeneous structure M with countable age, the externally definable Ramsey property is equivalent to the dynamical statement that, for each natural number n, every subflow of the space of n-types with parameters in M has a fixed point. We discuss a range of examples, including results regarding the lexicographic product of structures.

The Right Angled Artin Group Functor as a Categorical Embedding
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 25 (2025) 3035-3048 • View Publication • BIB
It has long been known that the combinatorial properties of a graph $Γ$ are closely related to the group theoretic properties of its right angled artin group (raag). It's natural to ask if the graph homomorphisms are similarly related to the group homomorphisms between two raags. The main result of this paper shows that there is a purely algebraic way to characterize the raags amongst groups, and the graph homomorphisms amongst the group homomorphisms. As a corollary we present a new algorithm for recovering $Γ$ from its raag.
Right-angled Artin groups and the cohomology basis graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Γ$ be a finite graph and let $A(Γ)$ be the corresponding right-angled Artin group. From an arbitrary basis $\mathcal B$ of $H^1(A(Γ),\mathbb F)$ over an arbitrary field, we construct a natural graph $Γ_{\mathcal B}$ from the cup product, called the \emph{cohomology basis graph}. We show that $Γ_{\mathcal B}$ always contains $Γ$ as a subgraph. This provides an effective way to reconstruct the defining graph $Γ$ from the cohomology of $A(Γ)$, to characterize the planarity of the defining graph from the algebra of $A(Γ)$, and to recover many other natural graph-theoretic invariants. We also investigate the behavior of the cohomology basis graph under passage to elementary subminors, and show that it is not well-behaved under edge contraction.

Distribution of colours in rainbow H-free colourings
An edge colouring of $K_n$ with $k$ colours is a Gallai $k$-colouring if it does not contain any rainbow triangle. Gyárfás, Pálvölgyi, Patkós and Wales proved that there exists a number $g(k)$ such that $n\geq g(k)$ if and only if for any colour distribution sequence $(e_1,\cdots,e_k)$ with $\sum_{i=1}^ke_i=\binom{n}{2}$, there exist a Gallai $k$-colouring of $K_n$ with $e_i$ edges having colour $i$. They also showed that $Ω(k)=g(k)=O(k^2)$ and posed the problem of determining the exact order of magnitude of $g(k)$. Feffer, Fu and Yan improved both bounds significantly by proving $Ω(k^{1.5}/\log k)=g(k)=O(k^{1.5})$. We resolve this problem by showing $g(k)=Θ(k^{1.5}/(\log k)^{0.5})$. Moreover, we generalise these definitions by considering rainbow $H$-free colourings of $K_n$ for any general graph $H$, and the natural corresponding quantity $g(H,k)$. We prove that $g(H,k)$ is finite for every $k$ if and only if $H$ is not a forest, and determine the order of $g(H,k)$ when $H$ contains a subgraph with minimum degree at least 3.

A Torelli theorem for graphs via quasistable divisors
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e25 • View Publication • BIB
The Torelli theorem establishes that the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve, together with the polarization provided by the theta divisor, fully characterizes the curve. In the case of nodal curves, there exists a concept known as fine compactified Jacobian. The fine compactified Jacobian of a curve comes with a natural stratification that can be regarded as a poset. Furthermore, this poset is entirely determined by the dual graph of the curve and is referred to as the poset of quasistable divisors on the graph. We present a combinatorial version of the Torelli theorem, which demonstrates that the poset of quasistable divisors of a graph completely determines the biconnected components of the graph (up to contracting separating edges). Moreover, we achieve a natural extension of this theorem to tropical curves.

The Rhodes semilattice of a biased graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
We reinterpret the Rhodes semilattices $R_n(\mathfrak{G})$ of a group $\mathfrak{G}$ in terms of gain graphs and generalize them to all gain graphs, both as sets of partition-potential pairs and as sets of subgraphs, and for the latter, further to biased graphs. Based on this we propose four different natural lattices in which the Rhodes semilattices and its generalizations are order ideals.
On the size of the Schur multiplier of finite groups
Published in J. Algebra Volume 668, 420-446(2025) • View Publication • BIB
We obtain bounds for the size of the Schur multiplier of finite $p$-groups and finite groups, which improve all existing bounds. Moreover, we obtain bounds for the size of the second cohomology group $H^2(G,\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})$ of a $p$-group with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$. Denoting the minimal number of generators of a $p$-group $G$ by $d(G)$, our bound depends on the parameters $|G|=p^n$, $|γ_2G|=p^k$, $d(G)=d$, $d(G/Z)=δ$ and $d(γ_2G/γ_3G)=k'$. For special $p$-groups, we further improve our bound when $δ-1 > k'$. Moreover, given natural numbers $d$, $δ$, $k$ and $k'$ satisfying $k=k'$ and $δ-1 \leq k'$, we construct a capable $p$-group $H$ of nilpotency class two and exponent $p$ such that the size of the Schur multiplier attains our bound.

What is a $p$-adic Dyson Brownian motion?
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the singular numbers of a certain explicit continuous-time Markov jump process on $\mathrm{GL}_N(\mathbb{Q}_p)$, which we argue gives the closest $p$-adic analogue of multiplicative Dyson Brownian motion. We do so by explicitly classifying the possible dynamics of singular numbers of processes on $\mathrm{GL}_N(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ satisfying natural properties possessed by Brownian motion on $\mathrm{GL}_N(\mathbb{C})$. Computing the evolution of singular numbers explicitly, we find that the $N$-tuple of singular numbers in decreasing order evolves as a Poisson jump process on $\mathbb{Z}^N$, with ordering enforced by reflection off the walls of the positive type $A$ Weyl chamber. This contrasts with -- and provides a $p$-adic analogue to -- the behavior of classical Dyson Brownian motion, where ordering is enforced by conditioning to avoid the Weyl chamber walls.
Two Games on Arithmetic Functions: SALIQUANT and NONTOTIENT
We investigate the Sprague-Grundy sequences for two normal-play impartial games based on arithmetic functions, first described by Iannucci and Larsson in \cite{sum}. In each game, the set of positions is N (natural numbers). In saliquant, the options are to subtract a non-divisor. Here we obtain several nice number theoretic lemmas, a fundamental theorem, and two conjectures about the eventual density of Sprague-Grundy values. In nontotient, the only option is to subtract the number of relatively prime residues. Here are able to calculate certain Sprague-Grundy values, and start to understand an appropriate class function.
