Using Automata to obtain Regular Expressions for Induced Actions
Presentations of Kan extensions of category actions provide a natural framework for expressing induced actions, and therefore a range of different combinatorial problems. Rewrite systems for Kan extensions have been defined and a variation on the Knuth-Bendix completion procedure can be used to complete them -- when possible. Regular languages and automata are a useful way of expressing sets and actions, and in this paper we explain how to use rewrite systems for Kan extensions to construct automata expressing the induced action and how sets of normal forms can be calculated by obtaining language equations from the automata.

Coloring of Trees with Minimum Sum of Colors
Published • View Publication • BIB
The chromatic sum of a graph is the smallest sum of colors among all proper colorings with natural numbers. The strength is the minimum number of colors needed to achieve the chromatic sum. We construct for each positive integer k a tree with strength k that has maximum degree only 2k-2. The result is best possible.

Principal Nilpotent pairs in a semisimple Lie algebra, I
Published • View Publication • BIB
This is the first of a series of papers devoted to certain pairs of commuting nilpotent elements in a semisimple Lie algebra that enjoy quite remarkable properties and which are expected to play a major role in Representation theory. The properties of these pairs and their role is similar to those of the principal nilpotents. To any principal nilpotent pair we associate a two-parameter analogue of the Kostant partition function, and propose the corresponding two-parameter analogue of the weight multiplicity formula. In a different direction, each principal nilpotent pair gives rise to a harmonic polynomial on the Cartesian square of the Cartan subalgebra, that transforms under an irreducible representation of the Weyl group. In the special case of sl_n, the conjugacy classes of principal nilpotent pairs and the irreducible representations of the Symmetric group, S_n, are both parametrised (in a compatible way) by Young diagrams. In general, our theory provides a natural generalization to arbitrary Weyl groups of the classical construction of simple S_n-modules in terms of Young's symmetrisers.

A Generalization of Redfield's Master Theorem
Generalizations of Redfield's master theorem and superposition theorem are proved by using decomposition of the tensor product of several induced monomial representations of the symmetric group $S_d$ into transitive constituents. As direct consequences, one obtains several graphical corollaries. Given graphs $Γ_1,\hdots ,Γ_k$, with $d$ vertices, together with their automorphism groups $W_1\leq S_d,\hdots, W_k\leq S_d$, one can find the number of superpositions of $Γ_1,\hdots ,Γ_k$, whose automorphism groups satisfy one of the following conditions: (1) the groups consist of even permutations; (2) the groups are trivial, in case at least one of $W_m$'s is cyclic; (3) the groups are of odd order, in case at least one of $W_m$'s is dihedral and its order is not divisible by 4; (4) the groups are of order dividing a natural number $r$, in case at least one of $W_m$'s has a normal solvable subgroup of order $r$, such that the corresponding factor-group is cyclic of order relatively prime to $r$; (5) the groups are $q$-groups ($q$ is a prime), in case at least one of $W_m$'s has a normal $q$-subgroup such that the corresponding factor-group is cyclic of order relatively prime to $q$.

Regular nilpotent elements and quantum groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We suggest new realizations of quantum groups corresponding to complex simple Lie algebras, and of affine quantum groups. These new realizations are labeled by Coxeter elements of the corresponding Weyl group and have the following key feature: The natural counterparts of the subalgebras U(n), where n is a maximal nilpotent subalgebra in g, possess non--singular characters.

Tree Structures: A Variational Approach to Shannon--Wiener Information
Published in "Trends in Quantum Physics", editors Krasnoholovets, Volodymyr; Columbus, Frank. ISBN: 1-59454-000-4. Pub. Date 2004 • Search Publication
Entanglement measures based on a logarithmic functional form naturally emerge in any attempt to quantify the degree of entanglement in the state of a multipartite quantum system. These measures can be regarded as generalizations of the classical Shannon-Wiener information of a probability distribution into the quantum regime. In the present work we introduce a previously unknown approach to the Shannon-Wiener information which provides an intuitive interpretation for its functional form as well as putting all entanglement measures with a similar structure into a new context: By formalizing the process of information gaining in a set-theoretical language we arrive at a mathematical structure which we call ''tree structures'' over a given set. On each tree structure, a tree function can be defined, reflecting the degree of splitting and branching in the given tree. We show in detail that the minimization of the tree function on, possibly constrained, sets of tree structures renders the functional form of the Shannon-Wiener information. This finding demonstrates that entropy-like information measures may themselves be understood as the result of a minimization process on a more general underlying mathematical structure, thus providing an entirely new interpretational framework to entropy-like measures of information and entanglement. We suggest three natural axioms for defining tree structures, which turn out to be related to the axioms describing neighbourhood topologies on a topological space. The same minimization that renders the functional form of the Shannon-Wiener information from the tree function then assigns a preferred topology to the underlying set, hinting at a deep relation between entropy-like measures and neighbourhood topologies.

Algebras related to matroids represented in characteristic zero
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let k be a field of characteristic zero. We consider graded subalgebras A of k[x_1,...,x_m]/(x_1^2,...,x_m^2) generated by d linearly independant linear forms. Representations of matroids over k provide a natural description of the structure of these algebras. In return, the numerical properties of the Hilbert function of A yield some information about the Tutte polynomial of the corresponding matroid. Isomorphism classes of these algebras correspond to equivalence classes of hyperplane arrangements under the action of the general linear group.

Polyunsaturated Posets and Graphs and the Greene-Kleitman Theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
A partition of a finite poset into chains places a natural upper bound on the size of a union of k antichains. A chain partition is k-saturated if this bound is achieved. Greene and Kleitman proved that, for each k, every finite poset has a simultaneously k- and k+1-saturated chain partition. West showed that the Greene-Kleitman Theorem is best-possible in a strong sense by exhibiting, for each c \ge 4, a poset with longest chain of cardinality c and no k- and l-saturated chain partition for any distinct, nonconsecutive k,l < c. We call such posets polyunsaturated. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of polyunsaturated posets with prescribed height, width, and cardinality. We prove these results in the more general context of graphs satisfying an analogue of the Greene-Kleitman Theorem. Lastly, we discuss analogous results for antichain partitions.

Graded characters of modules supported in the closure of a nilpotent conjugacy class
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the Poincare polynomials of isotypic components of a natural family of graded GL(n)-modules supported in the closure of a nilpotent conjugacy class. These polynomials generalize the Kostka-Foulkes and are q-analogues of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients corresponding to arbitrary tensor products of irreducibles. Many properties and formulas for these polynomials are derived, such as a generalized Morris recurrence, q-Kostant formula, and a conjectural formula in terms of catabolizable tableaux and charge.

Multi-atoms and monotonicity of generalized Kostka polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
The generalized Kostka polynomials are the Poincare polynomials of isotypic components of certain graded GL(n)-modules. The former satisfy a monotonicity property arising from natural surjections of the corresponding modules. This monotonicity property is realized combinatorially by a directed system of order- and statistic-preserving embeddings between the sets of Littlewood-Richardson (LR) tableaux that describe the generalized Kostka polynomials. Each set of LR tableaux is embedded into a cocyclage poset of column-strict tableaux of a fixed content, and the image is characterized in terms of catabolizable tableaux.

Line digraphs and coreflexive vertex sets
Published in Discrete Mathematics 188(1998), 269-277 • View Publication • BIB
The concept of coreflexive set is introduced to study the structure of digraphs. New characterizations of line digraphs and nth-order line digraphs are given. Coreflexive sets also lead to another natural way of forming an intersection digraph from a given digraph.

Descent algebras, hyperplane arrangements, and shuffling cards
Published • View Publication • BIB
Two notions of riffle shuffling on finite Coxeter groups are given: one using Solomon's descent algebra and another using random walk on chambers of hyperplane arrangements. These coincide for types $A$,$B$,$C$, $H_3$, and rank two groups. Both notions have the same, simple eigenvalues. The hyperplane definition is especially natural and satisfies a positivity property when $W$ is crystallographic and the relevant parameter is a good prime. The hyperplane viewpoint suggests interesting connections with Lie theory and leads to a notion of riffle shuffling for arbitrary real hyperplane arrangements and oriented matroids. Connections with Cellini's descent algebra are given.
Fiber polytopes for the projections between cyclic polytopes
Published in European J. Combin. 21:1 (2000), 19-47 • View Publication • BIB
The cyclic polytope $C(n,d)$ is the convex hull of any $n$ points on the moment curve ${(t,t^2,...,t^d):t \in \reals}$ in $\reals^d$. For $d' >d$, we consider the fiber polytope (in the sense of Billera and Sturmfels) associated to the natural projection of cyclic polytopes $π: C(n,d') \to C(n,d)$ which "forgets" the last $d'-d$ coordinates. It is known that this fiber polytope has face lattice indexed by the coherent polytopal subdivisions of $C(n,d)$ which are induced by the map $π$. Our main result characterizes the triples $(n,d,d')$ for which the fiber polytope is canonical in either of the following two senses: - all polytopal subdivisions induced by $π$ are coherent, - the structure of the fiber polytope does not depend upon the choice of points on the moment curve. We also discuss a new instance with a positive answer to the Generalized Baues Problem, namely that of a projection $π:P\to Q$ where $Q$ has only regular subdivisions and $P$ has two more vertices than its dimension.

Orbifold Euler characteristics and the number of commuting n-tuples in symmetric groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Generating functions for the number of commuting m-tuples in the symmetric groups are obtained. We define a natural sequence of ``orbifold Euler characteristics'' for a finite group G acting on a manifold X. Our definition generalizes the ordinary Euler characteristic of X/G and the string-theoretic orbifold Euler characteristic. Our formulae for commuting m-tuples underlie formulas that generalize the results of Macdonald and Hirzebruch-Hofer concerning the ordinary and string-theoretic Euler characteristics of symmetric products.
