Quantum automorphism groups of trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a characterisation of quantum automorphism groups of trees. In particular, for every tree, we show how to iteratively construct its quantum automorphism group using free products and free wreath products. This can be considered a quantum version of Jordan's theorem for the automorphism groups of trees. This is one of the first characterisations of quantum automorphism groups of a natural class of graphs with quantum symmetry.

On the number of subdirect products involving semigroups of integers and natural numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
We extend a recent result that for the (additive) semigroup of positive integers $\mathbb{N}$, there are continuum many subdirect products of $\mathbb{N} \times \mathbb{N}$ up to isomorphism. We prove that for $U,V$ each one of $\mathbb{Z}$ (the group of integers), $\mathbb{N}_{0}$ (the monoid of non-negative integers), or $\mathbb{N}$, we prove that $U \times V$ has continuum many (semigroup) subdirect products up to isomorphism.

On Matrices over a Polynomial Ring with Restricted Subdeterminants
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper introduces a framework to study discrete optimization problems which are parametric in the following sense: their constraint matrices correspond to matrices over the ring $\mathbb{Z}[x]$ of polynomials in one variable. We investigate in particular matrices whose subdeterminants all lie in a fixed set $S\subseteq\mathbb{Z}[x]$. Such matrices, which we call totally $S$-modular matrices, are closed with respect to taking submatrices, so it is natural to look at minimally non-totally $S$-modular matrices which we call forbidden minors for $S$. Among other results, we prove that if $S$ is finite, then the set of all determinants attained by a forbidden minor for $S$ is also finite. Specializing to the integers, we subsequently obtain the following positive complexity result: the recognition problem for totally $\pm\{0,1,a,a+1,2a+1\}$-modular matrices with $a\in\mathbb{Z}\backslash\{-3,-2,1,2\}$ and the integer linear optimization problem for totally $\pm\{ 0,a,a+1,2a+1\}$-modular matrices with $a\in\mathbb{Z}\backslash\{ -2,1\}$ can be solved in polynomial time.

Derived Categories of Permutahedral and Stellahedral Varieties
We utilize the coherent-constructible correspondence to construct full strongly exceptional collections of nef line bundles in the derived category of a toric variety through the combinatorics of constructible sheaves built from polytopes. To show that sequences are full, we build exact complexes of line bundles that categorify the relations in the McMullen polytope algebra. We compute the homomorphisms between certain constructible sheaves on polytopes and use this to reduce the question of exceptionality to showing that certain set differences of polytopes are contractible. As an application of our method, we construct full strongly exceptional collections of nef line bundles for the toric varieties associated to the permutahedron, stellahedron, and the type $B_n$ Coxeter permutahedron. The line bundles in our collections are indexed by base polytopes of loopless Schubert matroids, independence polytopes of all Schubert matroids, and feasible polytopes of loopless Schubert delta matroids, respectively. Our collections satisfy a number of nice properties: First, the quiver with relations that encodes the endomorphism algebra of the tilting sheaf can be described matroid-theoretically as a slight extension of the notion of weak maps and inclusion of matroids; Second, our collections are invariant under the natural symmetries of the corresponding fans; Finally, the induced semi-orthogonal decomposition of the derived categories refines the cuspidal semi-orthogonal decomposition as studied by Castravet and Tevelev. This gives a full strongly exceptional collection of nef line bundles for the cuspidal parts of the derived categories of our varieties indexed by loopless and coloopless Schubert matroids and Schubert delta matroids.

Uncertainty Principles on Finite Abelian Groups, Restriction Theory, and Applications to Sparse Signal Recovery
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group. Let $f: G \to {\mathbb C}$ be a signal (i.e. function). The classical uncertainty principle asserts that the product of the size of the support of $f$ and its Fourier transform $\hat f$, $\text{supp}(f)$ and $\text{supp}(\hat f)$ respectively, must satisfy the condition: $$|\text{supp}(f)| \cdot |\text{supp}(\hat f)| \geq |G|.$$ In the first part of this paper, we improve the uncertainty principle for signals with Fourier transform supported on generic sets. This improvement is achieved by employing {\it the restriction theory} and {\it the Salem set} mechanism from harmonic analysis. Then we investigate some applications of uncertainty principles that were developed in the first part of this paper, to the problem of unique recovery of finite sparse signals in the absence of some frequencies. Donoho and Stark (\cite{DS89}) showed that a signal of length $N$ can be recovered exactly, even if some of the frequencies are unobserved, provided that the product of the size of the number of non-zero entries of the signal and the number of missing frequencies is not too large, leveraging the classical uncertainty principle for vectors. Our results broaden the scope for a natural class of signals in higher-dimensional spaces. In the case when the signal is binary, we provide a very simple exact recovery mechanism through the DRA algorithm.
Full Grid Lattice Polygons with Maximal Sum of Squares of Edge-Lengths
Consider a subset [1,2,...,n]x[1,2,...,n] of the plane integer lattice. Take any non self-intersecting n^2-gon built on it (straight angles are allowed). The square of a side length is a positive integer. It is thus natural to ask how large the sum of square lengths of such an n^2-gon can be. This maximal value is a new integer sequence, labeled by A358212 in OEIS. In this note we give the lower bound and conjecture that this in fact is the correct answer. We further investigate proper n^2-gons (straight angles are not allowed) and present analogous results. Both sequences (conjecturally) have a different growth size.

Combinatorics of nondeterministic walks
This paper introduces nondeterministic walks, a new variant of one-dimensional discrete walks. The main difference to classical walks is that its nondeterministic steps consist of sets of steps from a predefined set such that all possible extensions are explored in parallel. We discuss in detail the most natural nondeterministic step sets (Dyck and Motzkin step sets), and show that several nondeterministic classes of lattice paths, such as nondeterministic bridges, excursions, and meanders are algebraic. The key concept is the generalization of the ending point of a walk to its reachable points, i.e., a set of ending points. We extend our results to general step sets: We show that nondeterministic bridges and several subclasses of nondeterministic meanders are always algebraic. We conjecture the same is true for nondeterministic excursions, and we present python and Maple packages to support our conjecture. This research is motivated by the study of networks involving encapsulation and decapsulation of protocols. Our results are obtained using generating functions, analytic combinatorics, and additive combinatorics. Keywords. Random walks, analytic combinatorics, generating functions, limit laws, networking, encapsulation.

On the combinatorics of $k$-Naples parking functions and parking strategies
We propose a characterization of $k$-Naples parking functions in terms of subsequences with the structure of a complete $k$-Naples parking function. We define complete parking preferences by requiring that for all $j=2,\dots,n$, the number of cars having preference at least $j$ is strictly greater than the number of spots in $[j,n]$. We also provide a characterization of permutation invariant $k$-Naples parking functions. Finally, we introduce a generalization of the parking problem where each car is given its own parking rule, by defining parking strategies as vectors of rules that allow all cars to park. Given a parking preference, we also investigate ways to find parking strategies that minimize certain natural parameters, such as the total number of backward steps, or the number of cars that need to drive backwards.

Intersection theorems for uniform subfamilies of hereditary families
A family $\mathcal C$ of sets is hereditary if whenever $A\in \mathcal C$ and $B\subset A$, we have $B\in \mathcal C$. Chvátal conjectured that the largest intersecting subfamily of a hereditary family is the family of all sets containing a fixed element. This is a generalization of the non-uniform Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem. A natural uniform variant of this question, which is essentially a generalization for the uniform Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, was suggested by Borg: given a hereditary family $\mathcal C$, in which all maximal sets have size at least $n$, what is the largest intersecting subfamily of the family of all $k$-element sets in $\mathcal C$? The answer, of course, depends on $n$ and $k$, and Borg conjectured that for $n\ge 2k$ the it is again the family of all $k$-element sets containing a singleton. Borg proved this conjecture for $n\ge k^3$. He also considered a $t$-intersecting variant of the question. In this paper, we improve the bound on $n$ for both intersecting and $t$-intersecting cases, showing that for $n\ge Ckt\log^2\frac nk$ and $n\ge Ck\log k$ the largest $t$-intersecting subfamily of the $k$-th layer of a hereditary family with maximal sets of size at least $n$ is the family of all sets containing a fixed $t$-element set. We also prove a stability result.
Flip Graph Connectivity for Arrangements of Pseudolines and Pseudocircles
Published • View Publication • BIB
Flip graphs of combinatorial and geometric objects are at the heart of many deep structural insights and connections between different branches of discrete mathematics and computer science. They also provide a natural framework for the study of reconfiguration problems. We study flip graphs of arrangements of pseudolines and of arrangements of pseudocircles, which are combinatorial generalizations of lines and circles, respectively. In both cases we consider triangle flips as local transformation and prove conjectures regarding their connectivity. In the case of $n$ pseudolines we show that the connectivity of the flip graph equals its minimum degree, which is exactly $n-2$. For the proof we introduce the class of shellable line arrangements, which serve as reference objects for the construction of disjoint paths. In fact, shellable arrangements are elements of a flip graph of line arrangements which are vertices of a polytope (Felsner and Ziegler; DM 241 (2001), 301--312). This polytope forms a cluster of good connectivity in the flip graph of pseudolines. In the case of pseudocircles we show that triangle flips induce a connected flip graph on \emph{intersecting} arrangements and also on cylindrical intersecting arrangements. The result for cylindrical arrangements is used in the proof for intersecting arrangements. We also show that in both settings the diameter of the flip graph is in $Θ(n^3)$. Our constructions make essential use of variants of the sweeping lemma for pseudocircle arrangements (Snoeyink and Hershberger; Proc.\ SoCG 1989: 354--363). We finally study cylindrical arrangements in their own right and provide new combinatorial characterizations of this class.

Random generation of subgroups of the modular group with a fixed isomorphism type
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show how to efficiently count and generate uniformly at random finitely generated subgroups of the modular group $\textsf{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ of a given isomorphism type. The method to achieve these results relies on a natural map of independent interest, which associates with any finitely generated subgroup of $\textsf{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ a graph which we call its silhouette, and which can be interpreted as a conjugacy class of free finite index subgroups of $\textsf{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$.

On some integrable models in inhomogeneous space
The purpose of this work is to build a framework that allows for an in-depth study of various generalisations to inhomogeneous space of models of Borodin-Ferrari, Dieker-Warren, Nordenstam, Warren-Windridge of interacting particles in interlacing arrays, both in discrete and continuous time, involving both Bernoulli and geometric jumps. The models can in addition be either time-inhomogeneous or particle-inhomogeneous. We show that the correlation functions of these models are determinantal and using this we prove a short-time asymptotic for these dynamics to the discrete Bessel point process. We moreover prove a number of closely related results. We prove that the autonomous, inhomogeneous in space and time, TASEP-like and pushTASEP-like particle systems on the edges of the array have explicit transition kernels and that from any deterministic initial condition their distributions are marginals of a determinantal measure. We prove a novel duality relation between dynamics in inhomogeneous space and dynamics with inhomogeneities on the level of the array. We extend the work of Nordenstam on the shuffling algorithm for domino tilings of the Aztec diamond and its relation to push-block dynamics in interlacing arrays to general weights on the tilings and then connect this, for a special class of weights, back to our previous results. We also consider non-intersecting walks in inhomogeneous space and time with fixed starting and end points and obtain a formula for their correlation functions, involving among other ingredients, an explicit Riemann-Hilbert problem. We then prove a limit theorem for the bottom lines in this line-ensemble, under some technical conditions. The main computational tool throughout this work is a natural generalisation of a Toeplitz matrix, that we call inhomogeneous Toeplitz-like matrix $\mathsf{T}_{\mathbf{f}}$ with (a possibly matrix-valued) symbol $\mathbf{f}$.

Integer Sequences: Irregular Arrays and Intra-Block Permutations
This article investigates integer sequences that partition the sequence into blocks of various lengths - irregular arrays. The main result of the article is explicit formulas for numbering of irregular arrays. A generalization of Cantor diagonal method is proposed. We also define and describe intra-block permutations of natural numbers. Generalizations of reluctant sequences are introduced, namely generalized reluctant sequences and generalized reverse reluctant sequences. Explicit formulas are presented for these sequences. The article provides numerous examples to illustrate all statements.

Hopf algebras from poset growth models
Published in Electron. J Combin. 31 no.3 (2024), #P3.9 • View Publication • BIB
We give a framework for growth models on posets which simultaneously generalizes the Classical Sequential Growth models for posets from causal set theory and the tree growth models of natural growth and simple tree classes, the latter of which also appear as solutions of combinatorial Dyson-Schwinger equations in quantum field theory. We prove which cases of the Classical Sequential Growth models give subHopf algebras of the Hopf algebra of posets, in analogy to a characterization due to Foissy in the Dyson-Schwinger case. We find a family of generating sets for the Connes-Moscovici Hopf algebra.

The sparse circular law, revisited
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $A_n$ be an $n\times n$ matrix with iid entries distributed as Bernoulli random variables with parameter $p = p_n$. Rudelson and Tikhomirov, in a beautiful and celebrated paper, show that the distribution of eigenvalues of $A_n \cdot (pn)^{-1/2}$ is approximately uniform on the unit disk as $n\rightarrow \infty$ as long as $pn \rightarrow \infty$, which is the natural necessary condition. In this paper we give a much simpler proof of this result, in its full generality, using a perspective we developed in our recent proof of the existence of the limiting spectral law when $pn$ is bounded. One feature of our proof is that it avoids the use of $ε$-nets entirely and, instead, proceeds by studying the evolution of the singular values of the shifted matrices $A_n-zI$ as we incrementally expose the randomness in the matrix.

Towards a high-dimensional Dirac's theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Dirac's theorem determines the sharp minimum degree threshold for graphs to contain perfect matchings and Hamiltonian cycles. There have been various attempts to generalize this theorem to hypergraphs with larger uniformity by considering hypergraph matchings and Hamiltonian cycles. In this paper, we consider another natural generalization of perfect matchings, Steiner triple systems. As a Steiner triple system can be viewed as a partition of pairs of vertices, it is a natural high-dimensional analogue of a perfect matching in graphs. We prove that for sufficiently large integer $n$ with $n \equiv 1 \text{ or } 3 \pmod{6}$, any $n$-vertex $3$-uniform hypergraph $H$ with minimum codegree at least $\left(\frac{3 + \sqrt{57}}{12} + o(1) \right)n = (0.879... + o(1))n$ contains a Steiner triple system. In fact, we prove a stronger statement by considering transversal Steiner triple systems in a collection of hypergraphs. We conjecture that the number $\frac{3 + \sqrt{57}}{12}$ can be replaced with $\frac{3}{4}$ which would provide an asymptotically tight high-dimensional generalization of Dirac's theorem.
Regular ovoids and Cameron-Liebler sets of generators in polar spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
Cameron-Liebler sets of generators in polar spaces were introduced a few years ago as natural generalisations of the Cameron-Liebler sets of subspaces in projective spaces. In this article we present the first two constructions of non-trivial Cameron-Liebler sets of generators in polar spaces. Also regular m-ovoids of k-spaces are introduced as a generalization of m-ovoids of polar spaces. They are used in one of the aforementioned constructions of Cameron-Liebler sets.
A complete solution for the partisan chocolate game
Published • View Publication • BIB
The class of Poset Take-Away games includes many interesting and difficult games. Playing on an $n$-dimensional positive quadrant (the origin being the bottom of the poset) gives rise to nim, wythoff's nim and chomp. These are impartial games. We introduce a partisan game motivated by chomp and the recent chocolate-bar version. Our game is played on a chocolate bar with alternately flavored pieces (or a checkerboard). We solve this game by showing it is equivalent to blue-red hackenbush strings. This equivalence proves that the values of game are numbers and it gives an algorithm for optimal play when there is more than one chocolate bar. The checkerboard interpretation leads to many natural questions.

A New and Faster Representation for Counting Integer Points in Parametric Polyhedra
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we consider the counting function $E_P(y) = |P_{y} \cap Z^{n_x}|$ for a parametric polyhedron $P_{y} = \{x \in R^{n_x} \colon A x \leq b + B y\}$, where $y \in R^{n_y}$. We give a new representation of $E_P(y)$, called a \emph{piece-wise step-polynomial with periodic coefficients}, which is a generalization of piece-wise step-polynomials and integer/rational Ehrhart's quasi-polynomials. It gives the fastest way to calculate $E_P(y)$ in certain scenarios. The most important cases are the following: 1) We show that, for the parametric polyhedron $P_y$ defined by a standard-form system $A x = y,\, x \geq 0$ with a fixed number of equalities, the function $E_P(y)$ can be represented by a polynomial-time computable function. In turn, such a representation of $E_P(y)$ can be constructed by an $poly\bigl(n, \|A\|_{\infty}\bigr)$-time algorithm; 2) Assuming again that the number of equalities is fixed, we show that integer/rational Ehrhart's quasi-polynomials of a polytope can be computed by FPT-algorithms, parameterized by sub-determinants of $A$ or its elements; 3) Our representation of $E_P$ is more efficient than other known approaches, if $A$ has bounded elements, especially if it is sparse in addition. Additionally, we provide a discussion about possible applications in the area of compiler optimization. In some "natural" assumptions on a program code, our approach has the fastest complexity bounds.

The Turán and Laguerre inequalities for quasi-polynomial-like functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper deals with both the higher order Turán inequalities and the Laguerre inequalities for quasi-polynomial-like functions -- that are expressions of the form $f(n)=c_l(n)n^l+\cdots+c_d(n)n^d+o(n^d)$, where $d,l\in\mathbb{N}$ and $d\leqslant l$. A natural example of such a function is the $A$-partition function $p_{A}(n)$, which enumerates the number of partitions of $n$ with parts in the fixed finite multiset $A=\{a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_k\}$ of positive integers. For an arbitrary positive integer $d$, we present efficient criteria for both the order $d$ Turán inequality and the $d$th Laguarre inequality for quasi-polynomial-like functions. In particular, we apply these results to deduce non-trivial analogues for $p_A(n)$.
