Merging-Free Partitions and Run-Sorted Permutations
In this paper, we study merging-free partitions with their canonical forms and run-sorted permutations. We give a combinatorial proof of the conjecture made by Nabawanda et al. We describe the distribution of the statistics of runs and right-to-left minima over the set of run-sorted permutations and we give the exponential generating function for their joint distribution. We show the number of right-to-left minima is given by the shifted distribution of the Stirling number of the second kind. We also prove that the non-crossing merging-free partitions are enumerated by powers of 2. We use one of the constructive proofs given in the paper to implement an algorithm for the exhaustive generation of run-sorted permutations by number of runs.

We prove several new instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) on Catalan objects of type A and type B. Moreover, we refine many of the known instances of the CSP on Catalan objects. For example, we consider triangulations refined by the number of "ears", non-crossing matchings with a fixed number of short edges, and non-crossing configurations with a fixed number of loops and edges.
Classifying torsion classes of gentle algebras
For a finite-dimensional gentle algebra, it is already known that the functorially finite torsion classes of its category of finite-dimensional modules can be classified using a combinatorial interpretation, called maximal non-crossing sets of strings, of the corresponding support $τ$-tilting module (or equivalently, two-term silting complexes). In the topological interpretation of gentle algebras via marked surfaces, such a set can be interpreted as a dissection (or partial triangulation), or equivalently, a lamination that does not contain a closed curve. We will refine this combinatorics, which gives us a classification of torsion classes in the category of finite length modules over a (possibly infinite-dimensional) gentle algebra. As a consequence, our result also unifies the functorially finite torsion class classification of finite-dimensional gentle algebras with certain classes of special biserial algebras - such as Brauer graph algebras.
Book Embeddings of Graph Products
A $k$-stack layout (also called a $k$-page book embedding) of a graph consists of a total order of the vertices, and a partition of the edges into $k$ sets of non-crossing edges with respect to the vertex order. The stack number (book thickness, page number) of a graph is the minimum $k$ such that it admits a $k$-stack layout. A $k$-queue layout is defined similarly, except that no two edges in a single set may be nested.
It was recently proved that graphs of various non-minor-closed classes are subgraphs of the strong product of a path and a graph with bounded treewidth. Motivated by this decomposition result, we explore stack layouts of graph products. We show that the stack number is bounded for the strong product of a path and (i) a graph of bounded pathwidth or (ii) a bipartite graph of bounded treewidth and bounded degree. The results are obtained via a novel concept of simultaneous stack-queue layouts, which may be of independent interest.
A shuffle algebra point of view on operator-valued probability theory

We extend the shuffle algebra perspective on scalar-valued non-commutative probability theory to the operator-valued case. Given an operator-valued probability space with an algebra $B$ acting on it (on the left and on the right), we associate operators in the operad of multilinear maps on $B$ to the operator-valued distribution and free cumulants of a random variable. These operators define a representation of a PROS of non-crossing partitions. Using concepts from higher category theory, specifically $2$-monoidal categories, we define a notion of unshuffle Hopf algebra on an underlying PROS. We introduce a PROS of words insertions and show that both the latter and the PROS of non-crossing partitions are unshuffle Hopf algebras (in a $2$-monoidal sense). The two relate by mean of a map of unshuffle bialgebras (in a $2$-monoidal sense) which we call the splitting map. Ultimately, we obtain a left half-shuffle fixed point equation corresponding to free moment-cumulant relations in a shuffle algebra of bicollection homomorphisms on the PROS of words insertions. Right half-shuffle and shuffle laws are interpreted in the framework of boolean and monotone non-commutative probability theory, respectively.

Relations between moments and cumulants play a central role in both classical and non-commutative probability theory. The latter allows for several distinct families of cumulants corresponding to different types of independences: free, Boolean and monotone. Relations among those cumulants have been studied recently. In this work we focus on the problem of expressing with a closed formula multivariate monotone cumulants in terms of free and Boolean cumulants. In the process we introduce various constructions and statistics on non-crossing partitions. Our approach is based on a pre-Lie algebra structure on cumulant functionals. Relations among cumulants are described in terms of the pre-Lie Magnus expansion combined with results on the continuous Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula due to A. Murua.
Linear $k$-Chord Diagrams

We generalize the notion of linear chord diagrams to the case of matched sets of size $k$, which we call $k$-chord diagrams. We provide formal generating functions and recurrence relations enumerating these $k$-chord diagrams by the number of short chords, where the latter is defined as all members of the matched set being adjacent, and is the generalization of a short chord or loop in a linear chord diagram. We also enumerate $k$-chord diagrams by the number of connected components built from short chords and provide the associated generating functions in this case. We show that the distributions of short chords and connected components are asymptotically Poisson, and provide the associated means. Finally, we provide recurrence relations enumerating non-crossing $k$-chord diagrams by the number of short chords, generalising the Narayana numbers, and establish asymptotic normality, providing the associated means and variances. Applications to generalized games of memory are also discussed.
Long Alternating Paths Exist
Let $P$ be a set of $2n$ points in convex position, such that $n$ points are colored red and $n$ points are colored blue. A non-crossing alternating path on $P$ of length $\ell$ is a sequence $p_1, \dots, p_\ell$ of $\ell$ points from $P$ so that (i) all points are pairwise distinct; (ii) any two consecutive points $p_i$, $p_{i+1}$ have different colors; and (iii) any two segments $p_i p_{i+1}$ and $p_j p_{j+1}$ have disjoint relative interiors, for $i \neq j$.
We show that there is an absolute constant $\varepsilon > 0$, independent of $n$ and of the coloring, such that $P$ always admits a non-crossing alternating path of length at least $(1 + \varepsilon)n$. The result is obtained through a slightly stronger statement: there always exists a non-crossing bichromatic separated matching on at least $(1 + \varepsilon)n$ points of $P$. This is a properly colored matching whose segments are pairwise disjoint and intersected by common line. For both versions, this is the first improvement of the easily obtained lower bound of $n$ by an additive term linear in $n$. The best known published upper bounds are asymptotically of order $4n/3+o(n)$.

We use production matrices to count several classes of geometric graphs. We present novel production matrices for non-crossing partitions, connected geometric graphs, and k-angulations, which provide another way of counting the number of such objects. Counting geometric graphs is then equivalent to calculating the powers of a production matrix. Applying the technique of Riordan Arrays to these production matrices, we establish new formulas for the numbers of geometric graphs as well as combinatorial identities derived from the production matrices. Further, we obtain the characteristic polynomial and the eigenvectors of such production matrices.

We study the linear span of commutators of free random variables and show that these are the only quadratic forms which satisfy the following equivalent properties:
* preservation free infinite divisibility
* free and strong cancellation of odd cumulants
* symmetric distribution for any free family.
The main combinatorial tool is an involution on non-crossing partitions.
On flips in planar matchings

In this paper we investigate the structure of flip graphs on non-crossing perfect matchings in the plane. Specifically, consider all non-crossing straight-line perfect matchings on a set of $2n$ points that are placed equidistantly on the unit circle. A flip operation on such a matching replaces two matching edges that span an empty quadrilateral with the other two edges of the quadrilateral, and the flip is called centered if the quadrilateral contains the center of the unit circle. The graph $\mathcal{G}_n$ has those matchings as vertices, and an edge between any two matchings that differ in a flip, and it is known to have many interesting properties. In this paper we focus on the spanning subgraph $\mathcal{H}_n$ of $\mathcal{G}_n$ obtained by taking all edges that correspond to centered flips, omitting edges that correspond to non-centered flips. We show that the graph $\mathcal{H}_n$ is connected for odd $n$, but has exponentially many small connected components for even $n$, which we characterize and count via Catalan and generalized Narayana numbers. For odd $n$, we also prove that the diameter of $\mathcal{H}_n$ is linear in $n$. Furthermore, we determine the minimum and maximum degree of $\mathcal{H}_n$ for all $n$, and characterize and count the corresponding vertices. Our results imply the non-existence of certain rainbow cycles in $\mathcal{G}_n$, and they resolve several open questions and conjectures raised in a recent paper by Felsner, Kleist, Mütze, and Sering.

We consider maximal non-$l$-intertwining collections, which are a higher-dimensional version of the maximal non-crossing collections which give clusters of Plücker coordinates in the Grassmannian coordinate ring, as described by Scott. We extend a method of Scott for producing such collections, which are related to tensor products of higher Auslander algebras of type $A$. We show that a higher preprojective algebra of the tensor product of two $d$-representation-finite algebras has a $d$-precluster-tilting subcategory. Finally we relate mutations of these collections to a form of tilting for these algebras.
Planar kinematic invariants, matroid subdivisions and generalized Feynman diagrams
In recent work of Cachazo, Guevara, Mizera and the author, a generalization of the biadjoint scattering amplitude $m^{(k)}(\mathbb{I}_n,\mathbb{I}_n)$ was introduced as an integral over the moduli space of $n$ points in $\mathbb{CP}^{k-1}$, with value a sum of certain rational functions on the kinematic space $\mathcal{K}_{k,n}$. It was shown there for $m^{(3)}(\mathbb{I}_6,\mathbb{I}_6)$ and later by Cachazo and Rojas that collections of poles appearing in $m^{(3)}(\mathbb{I}_7,\mathbb{I}_7)$ are compatible exactly when they are dual to collections of rays which generate the maximal faces of a polyhedral complex known as the (nonnegative) tropical Grassmannian.
In this note, we derive a remarkable planar basis for the space of generalized kinematic invariants which coincides in the case $k=2$ with usual standard planar multi-particle basis for the kinematic space. We implement in Mathematica the action on formal linear combinations of planar matroid subdivisions of a boundary operator which, together with the planar basis, determines compatibility for any given poles appearing in the expansion of $m^{(k)}(\mathbb{I}_n,\mathbb{I}_n)$, by computing a certain combinatorial non-crossing condition on the second hypersimplicial faces $Δ_{2,n-(k-2)}$ of $Δ_{k,n}$. The algorithms are implemented in an accompanying Mathematica notebook and are evaluated on existing tables of rays, in the form of tropical Plucker vectors, to tabulate the finest planar subdivisions of $Δ_{3,8},Δ_{3,9}$ and $ Δ_{4,8}$, or equivalently the set of maximal cones for the corresponding nonnegative tropical Grassmannians.

We consider $m$-divisible non-crossing partitions of $\{1,2,\ldots,mn\}$ with the property that for some $t\leq n$ no block contains more than one of the first $t$ integers. We give a closed formula for the number of multi-chains of such non-crossing partitions with prescribed number of blocks. Building on this result, we compute Chapoton's $M$-triangle in this setting and conjecture a combinatorial interpretation for the $H$-triangle. This conjecture is proved for $m=1$.
Counting non-crossing permutations on surfaces of any genus

Given a surface with boundary and some points on its boundary, a polygon diagram is a way to connect those points as vertices of non-overlapping polygons on the surface. Such polygon diagrams represent non-crossing permutations on a surface with any genus and number of boundary components. If only bigons are allowed, then it becomes an arc diagram. The count of arc diagrams is known to have a rich structure. We show that the count of polygon diagrams exhibits the same interesting behaviours, in particular it is almost polynomial in the number of points on the boundary components, and the leading coefficients of those polynomials are the intersection numbers on the compactified moduli space of curves.
Non-Hyperoctahedral Categories of Two-Colored Partitions, Part I: New Categories

Compact quantum groups can be studied by investigating their co-representation categories in analogy to the Schur-Weyl/Tannaka-Krein approach. For the special class of (unitary) "easy" quantum groups these categories arise from a combinatorial structure: Rows of two-colored points form the objects, partitions of two such rows the morphisms; vertical/horizontal concatenation and reflection give composition, monoidal product and involution. Of the four possible classes $\mathcal{O}$, $\mathcal{B}$, $\mathcal{S}$ and $\mathcal{H}$ of such categories (inspired respectively by the classical orthogonal, bistochastic, symmetric and hyperoctahedral groups) we treat the first three -- the non-hyperoctahedral ones. We introduce many new examples of such categories. They are defined in terms of subtle combinations of block size, coloring and non-crossing conditions. This article is part of an effort to classify all non-hyperoctahedral categories of two-colored partitions. The article is purely combinatorial in nature; The quantum group aspects are left out.
Positively Hyperbolic Varieties, Tropicalization, and Positroids
A variety of codimension $c$ in complex affine space is called positively hyperbolic if the imaginary part of any point in it does not lie in any positive linear subspace of dimension $c$. Positively hyperbolic hypersurfaces are defined by stable polynomials. We give a new characterization of positively hyperbolic varieties using sign variations, and show that they are equivalently defined by being hyperbolic with respect to the positive part of the Grassmannian, in the sense of Shamovich and Vinnikov. We prove that positively hyperbolic projective varieties have tropicalizations that are locally subfans of the type $A$ hyperplane arrangement defined by $x_i = x_j$, in which the maximal cones satisfy a non-crossing condition. This gives new proofs of some results of Choe--Oxley--Sokal--Wagner and Brändén on Newton polytopes and tropicalizations of stable polynomials. We settle the question of which tropical varieties can be obtained as tropicalizations of positively hyperbolic varieties in the case of tropical toric varieties, constant-coefficient tropical curves, and Bergman fans. Along the way, we also give a new characterization of positroids in terms of a non-crossing condition on their Bergman fans.
Limit theorems for statistics of non-crossing partitions
We study the distribution of several statistics of large non-crossing partitions. First, we prove the Gaussian limit theorem for the number of blocks of a given fixed size. In contrast to the properties of usual set partitions, we show that the number of blocks of different sizes are negatively correlated, even for large partitions. In addition, we show that the sizes of blocks in a given large non-crossing partition are distributed according to a geometric distribution and not Poisson, as in the case of usual set partitions. Next, we show that the size of the largest block concentrates at $\log_2 n$, and that after an appropriate rescaling, it can be described by the double exponential distribution. Finally, we show that the width of a large non-crossing partition converges to the Theta-distribution which arises in the theory of Brownian excursions.
Linear independences of maps associated to partitions
Given a suitable collection of partitions of sets, there exists a connection to easy quantum groups via intertwiner maps. A sufficient condition for this correspondence to be one-to-one are particular linear independences on the level of those maps. In the case of non-crossing partitions, a proof of this linear independence can be traced back to a matrix determinant formula, developed by W. Tutte. We present a revised and adapted version of Tutte's work and the link to the problem above, believing that this self-contained article will assist others in the field of easy quantum groups. In particular, we fixed some errors in the original work and adapted notations, definitions, statements and proofs.

Correlation functions in a dynamic quartic matrix model are obtained from the two-point function through a recurrence relation. This paper gives the explicit solution of the recurrence by mapping it bijectively to a two-fold nested combinatorial structure each counted by Catalan numbers. These `nested Catalan tables' have a description as diagrams of non-crossing chords and threads.
