Shellability of posets of labeled partitions and arrangements defined by root systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the posets of connected components of intersections of toric and elliptic arrangements defined by root systems are EL-shellable and we compute their homotopy type. Our method rests on Bibby's description of such posets by means of "labeled partitions": after giving an EL-labeling and counting homology chains for general posets of labeled partitions, we obtain the stated results by considering the appropriate subposets.
An efficient Algorithm to partition a Sequence of Integers into Subsets with equal Sums
To partition a sequence of n integers into subsets with prescribed sums is an NP-hard problem in general. In this paper we present an efficient solution for the homogeneous version of this problem; i.e. where the elements in each subset add up to the same sum.

Fixed-point-free involutions and Schur P-positivity
Published in J. Combin. 11 (2020), no. 1, 65-110 • View PublicationBIB
The orbits of the symplectic group acting on the type A flag variety are indexed by the fixed-point-free involutions in a finite symmetric group. The cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits have polynomial representatives $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ akin to Schubert polynomials. We show that the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, which are stable limits of the polynomials $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, are Schur $P$-positive. To do so, we construct an analogue of the Lascoux-Schützenberger tree, an algebraic recurrence that computes Schubert polynomials. As a byproduct of our proof, we obtain a Pfaffian formula of geometric interest for $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ when $z$ is a fixed-point-free version of a Grassmannian permutation. We also classify the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions that are single Schur $P$-functions, and show that the decomposition of $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ into Schur $P$-functions is unitriangular with respect to dominance order on strict partitions. These results and proofs mirror previous work by the authors related to the orthogonal group action on the type A flag variety.

AG codes correspond geometrically to points in the Grassmannian of k-planes in an n-dimensional projective space PG(n, F_q) defined over a finite field F_q of q elements. We prove that invariant subgrassmannians by the action of a triangle group hold a t-design of determined parameters.

Ramanujan-type congruences for $2$-color partition triples
Let ${p}_{3,3}(n)$ denote the number of $2$-color partition triples of $n$ where one of the colors appears only in parts that are multiples of $3$. In this paper, we shall establish some interesting Ramanujan-type congruences for ${p}_{3,3}(n)$.

Block partitions: an extended view
Given a sequence $S=(s_1,\dots,s_m) \in [0, 1]^m$, a block $B$ of $S$ is a subsequence $B=(s_i,s_{i+1},\dots,s_j)$. The size $b$ of a block $B$ is the sum of its elements. It is proved in [1] that for each positive integer $n$, there is a partition of $S$ into $n$ blocks $B_1, \dots , B_n$ with $|b_i - b_j| \le 1$ for every $i, j$. In this paper, we consider a generalization of the problem in higher dimensions.

Strongly regular Cayley graphs from partitions of subdifference sets of the Singer difference sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we give a new lifting construction of "hyperbolic" type of strongly regular Cayley graphs. Also we give new constructions of strongly regular Cayley graphs over the additive groups of finite fields based on partitions of subdifference sets of the Singer difference sets. Our results unify some recent constructions of strongly regular Cayley graphs related to $m$-ovoids and $i$-tight sets in finite geometry. Furthermore, some of the strongly regular Cayley graphs obtained in this paper are new or nonisomorphic to known strongly regular graphs with the same parameters.

On the Linear Extension Complexity of Stable Set Polytopes for Perfect Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the linear extension complexity of stable set polytopes of perfect graphs. We make use of known structural results permitting to decompose perfect graphs into basic perfect graphs by means of two graph operations: 2-join and skew partitions. Exploiting the link between extension complexity and the nonnegative rank of an associated slack matrix, we investigate the behaviour of the extension complexity under these graph operations. We show bounds for the extension complexity of the stable set polytope of a perfect graph $G$ depending linearly on the size of $G$ and involving the depth of a decomposition tree of $G$ in terms of basic perfect graphs.

Weighted counting of solutions to sparse systems of equations
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 28 (2019) 696-719 • View PublicationBIB
Given complex numbers $w_1, \ldots, w_n$, we define the weight $w(X)$ of a set $X$ of 0-1 vectors as the sum of $w_1^{x_1} \cdots w_n^{x_n}$ over all vectors $(x_1, \ldots, x_n)$ in $X$. We present an algorithm, which for a set $X$ defined by a system of homogeneous linear equations with at most $r$ variables per equation and at most $c$ equations per variable, computes $w(X)$ within relative error $ε>0$ in $(rc)^{O(\ln n-\ln ε)}$ time provided $|w_j| \leq β(r \sqrt{c})^{-1}$ for an absolute constant $β>0$ and all $j=1, \ldots, n$. A similar algorithm is constructed for computing the weight of a linear code over ${\Bbb F}_p$. Applications include counting weighted perfect matchings in hypergraphs, counting weighted graph homomorphisms, computing weight enumerators of linear codes with sparse code generating matrices, and computing the partition functions of the ferromagnetic Potts model at low temperatures and of the hard-core model at high fugacity on biregular bipartite graphs.

On the $1/3-2/3$ Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $(P,\leq)$ be a finite poset (partially ordered set), where $P$ has cardinality $n$. Consider linear extensions of $P$ as permutations $x_1x_2\cdots x_n$ in one-line notation. For distinct elements $x,y\in P$, we define $\mathbb{P}(x\prec y)$ to be the proportion of linear extensions of $P$ in which $x$ comes before $y$. For $0\leq α\leq \frac{1}{2}$, we say $(x,y)$ is an $α$-balanced pair if $α\leq \mathbb{P}(x\prec y) \leq 1-α.$ The $1/3-2/3$ Conjecture states that every finite partially ordered set which is not a chain has a $1/3$-balanced pair. We make progress on this conjecture by showing that it holds for certain families of posets. These include lattices such as the Boolean, set partition, and subspace lattices; partial orders that arise from a Young diagram; and some partial orders of dimension $2$. We also consider various posets which satisfy the stronger condition of having a $1/2$-balanced pair. For example, this happens when the poset has an automorphism with a cycle of length $2$. Various questions for future research are posed.

Parabolic Catalan numbers count flagged Schur functions and their appearances as type A Demazure characters (key polynomials)
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 3, Combinatorics (December 5, 2017) dmtcs:3727 • View PublicationBIB
Fix an integer partition lambda that has no more than n parts. Let beta be a weakly increasing n-tuple with entries from {1,..,n}. The flagged Schur function indexed by lambda and beta is a polynomial generating function in x_1, .., x_n for certain semistandard tableaux of shape lambda. Let pi be an n-permutation. The type A Demazure character (key polynomial, Demazure polynomial) indexed by lambda and pi is another such polynomial generating function. Reiner and Shimozono and then Postnikov and Stanley studied coincidences between these two families of polynomials. Here their results are sharpened by the specification of unique representatives for the equivalence classes of indexes for both families of polynomials, extended by the consideration of more general beta, and deepened by proving that the polynomial coincidences also hold at the level of the underlying tableau sets. Let R be the set of lengths of columns in the shape of lambda that are less than n. Ordered set partitions of {1,..,n} with block sizes determined by R, called R-permutations, are used to describe the minimal length representatives for the parabolic quotient of the nth symmetric group specified by the set {1,..,n-1}\R. The notion of 312-avoidance is generalized from n-permutations to these set partitions. The R-parabolic Catalan number is defined to be the number of these. Every flagged Schur function arises as a Demazure polynomial. Those Demazure polynomials are precisely indexed by the R-312-avoiding R-permutations. Hence the number of flagged Schur functions that are distinct as polynomials is shown to be the R-parabolic Catalan number. The projecting and lifting processes that relate the notions of 312-avoidance and of R-312-avoidance are described with maps developed for other purposes.

Thieves can make sandwiches
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a common generalization of the Ham Sandwich theorem and Alon's Necklace Splitting theorem. Our main results show the existence of fair distributions of $m$ measures in $R^d$ among $r$ thieves using roughly $mr/d$ convex pieces, even in the cases when $m$ is larger than the dimension. The main proof relies on a construction of a geometric realization of the topological join of two spaces of partitions of $R^d$ into convex parts, and the computation of the Fadell-Husseini ideal valued index of the resulting spaces.

Growth Diagrams and Minuscule Polygon Configurations in the Affine Grassmannian
We define affine growth diagrams consisting of $GL_m$ dominant weights that label the vertices of a staircase-shaped grid. These are also called cylindrical growth diagrams as defined by Speyer and White in the case of partitions. The weights labelling each adjacent pair of vertices differ by a vertical strip and the weights around each unit square satisfy a local condition that appeared in van Leeuwen's work on the Littelmann path model for crystals. We prove two main results. For a sequence of minuscule weights $\vecλ=(λ^1,\ldots,λ^n)$ let Poly$(\vecλ)$ denote the configuration space of $n$-tuples of points $(g_1,\ldots,g_n)$ in the affine Grassmannian such that the weight-valued distances satisfy $d(g_i,g_{i+1})=λ^i$. This is the convolution variety arising in the geometric Satake correspondence. We show that for a generic point $(g_1,\ldots,g_n)$ of a component the distances $d(g_i,g_j)$ form an affine growth diagram and that this gives a bijection between components of Poly$(\vecλ)$ and affine growth diagrams of type $\vecλ$. The main tool used in the proof is the Knutson--Tao hive. In the second part, we give a purely combinatorial construction of affine growth diagrams from natural number entries by applying Greene's theorem to certain subrectangles of the staircase. From this construction it follows that affine growth diagrams contain the classical Fomin growth diagrams and realize the RS-correspondence when $\vecλ=(ω_1,\ldots,ω_1,ω_1^*,\ldots,ω_1^*)$.

Modular Forms and $k$-colored Generalized Frobenius Partitions

Let $k$ and $n$ be positive integers. Let $cφ_{k}(n)$ denote the number of $k$-colored generalized Frobenius partitions of $n$ and $\mathrm{C}Φ_k(q)$ be the generating function of $cφ_{k}(n)$. In this article, we study $\mathrm{C}Φ_k(q)$ using the theory of modular forms and discover new surprising properties of $\mathrm{C}Φ_k(q)$.

Finding Balance: Split Graphs and Related Classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph is a split graph if its vertex set can be partitioned into a clique and a stable set. A split graph is unbalanced if there exist two such partitions that are distinct. Cheng, Collins and Trenk (2016), discovered the following interesting counting fact: unlabeled, unbalanced split graphs on $n$ vertices can be placed into a bijection with all unlabeled split graphs on $n-1$ or fewer vertices. In this paper we translate these concepts and the theorem to different combinatorial settings: minimal set covers, bipartite graphs with a distinguished block and posets of height one.

Convexity of tableau sets for type A Demazure characters (key polynomials), parabolic Catalan numbers
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 20 no. 2, Combinatorics (August 16, 2018) dmtcs:4158 • View PublicationBIB
This is the first of three papers that develop structures which are counted by a "parabolic" generalization of Catalan numbers. Fix a subset R of {1,..,n-1}. Consider the ordered partitions of {1,..,n} whose block sizes are determined by R. These are the "inverses" of (parabolic) multipermutations whose multiplicities are determined by R. The standard forms of the ordered partitions are refered to as "R-permutations". The notion of 312-avoidance is extended from permutations to R-permutations. Let lambda be a partition of N such that the set of column lengths in its shape is R or R union {n}. Fix an R-permutation pi. The type A Demazure character (key polynomial) in x_1, .., x_n that is indexed by lambda and pi can be described as the sum of the weight monomials for some of the semistandard Young tableau of shape lambda that are used to describe the Schur function indexed by lambda. Descriptions of these "Demazure" tableaux developed by the authors in earlier papers are used to prove that the set of these tableaux is convex in Z^N if and only if pi is R-312-avoiding if and only if the tableau set is the entire principal ideal generated by the key of pi. These papers were inspired by results of Reiner and Shimozono and by Postnikov and Stanley concerning coincidences between Demazure characters and flagged Schur functions. This convexity result is used in the next paper to deepen those results from the level of polynomials to the level of tableau sets. The R-parabolic Catalan number is defined to be the number of R-312-avoiding permutations. These special R-permutations are reformulated as "R-rightmost clump deleting" chains of subsets of {1,..,n} and as "gapless R-tuples"; the latter n-tuples arise in multiple contexts in these papers.

A Note on Multiparty Communication Complexity and the Hales-Jewett Theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
For integers $n$ and $k$, the density Hales-Jewett number $c_{n,k}$ is defined as the maximal size of a subset of $[k]^n$ that contains no combinatorial line. We show that for $k \ge 3$ the density Hales-Jewett number $c_{n,k}$ is equal to the maximal size of a cylinder intersection in the problem $Part_{n,k}$ of testing whether $k$ subsets of $[n]$ form a partition. It follows that the communication complexity, in the Number On the Forehead (NOF) model, of $Part_{n,k}$, is equal to the minimal size of a partition of $[k]^n$ into subsets that do not contain a combinatorial line. Thus, the bound in \cite{chattopadhyay2007languages} on $Part_{n,k}$ using the Hales-Jewett theorem is in fact tight, and the density Hales-Jewett number can be thought of as a quantity in communication complexity. This gives a new angle to this well studied quantity. As a simple application we prove a lower bound on $c_{n,k}$, similar to the lower bound in \cite{polymath2010moser} which is roughly $c_{n,k}/k^n \ge \exp(-O(\log n)^{1/\lceil \log_2 k\rceil})$. This lower bound follows from a protocol for $Part_{n,k}$. It is interesting to better understand the communication complexity of $Part_{n,k}$ as this will also lead to the better understanding of the Hales-Jewett number. The main purpose of this note is to motivate this study.

New Factor Pairs for Factorizations of Lambert Series Generating Functions
We prove several new variants of the Lambert series factorization theorem established in the first article "Generating special arithmetic functions by Lambert series factorizations" by Merca and Schmidt (2017). Several characteristic examples of our new results are presented in the article to motivate the formulations of the generalized factorization theorems. Applications of these new factorization results include new identities involving the Euler partition function and the generalized sum-of-divisors functions, the Möbius function, Euler's totient function, the Liouville lambda function, von Mangoldt's lambda function, and the Jordan totient function.

Generalized non-crossing Partitions and Buildings

For any finite Coxeter group $W$ of rank $n$ we show that the order complex of the lattice of non-crossing partitions $\mathrm{NC}(W)$ embeds as a connected chamber subcomplex into a spherical building of type $A_{n-1}$. We use this to give a new proof of the fact that the non-crossing partition lattice in type $A_n$ is supersolvable for all $n$ and show that in case $B_n$, this is only the case if $n<4$. We also obtain a lower bound on the radius of the Hurwitz graph $H(W)$ in all types and re-prove that in type $A_n$ the radius is ${n \choose 2}$.

Shuffle-compatible permutation statistics
Published in Adv. Math. 332: 85-141, 2018 • View PublicationBIB
Since the early work of Richard Stanley, it has been observed that several permutation statistics have a remarkable property with respect to shuffles of permutations. We formalize this notion of a shuffle-compatible permutation statistic and introduce the shuffle algebra of a shuffle-compatible permutation statistic, which encodes the distribution of the statistic over shuffles of permutations. This paper develops a theory of shuffle-compatibility for descent statistics (statistics that depend only on the descent set and length) which has close connections to the theory of $P$-partitions, quasisymmetric functions, and noncommutative symmetric functions. We use our framework to prove that many descent statistics are shuffle-compatible and to give explicit descriptions of their shuffle algebras, thus unifying past results of Stanley, Gessel, Stembridge, Aguiar-Bergeron-Nyman, and Petersen.
