The spt-Function of Andrews

The spt-function spt($n$) was introduced by Andrews as the weighted counting of partitions of $n$ with respect to the number of occurrences of the smallest part. In this survey, we summarize recent developments in the study of spt($n$), including congruence properties established by Andrews, Bringmann, Folsom, Garvan, Lovejoy and Ono et al., a constructive proof of the Andrews-Dyson-Rhoades conjecture given by Chen, Ji and Zang, generalizations and variations of the spt-function. We also give an overview of asymptotic formulas of spt($n$) obtained by Ahlgren, Andersen and Rhoades et al. We conclude with some conjectures on inequalities on spt($n$), which are reminiscent of those on $p(n)$ due to DeSalvo and Pak, and Bessenrodt and Ono. Furthermore, we observe that, beyond the log-concavity, $p(n)$ and spt($n$) satisfy higher order inequalities based on polynomials arising in the invariant theory of binary forms. In particular, we conjecture that the higher order Turán inequality $4(a_n^2-a_{n-1}a_{n+1})(a_{n+1}^2-a_{n}a_{n+2})-(a_na_{n+1}-a_{n-1}a_{n+2})^2>0$ holds for $p(n)$ when $n\geq 95$ and for spt($n$) when $n\geq 108$.

We introduce and study the notion of the $G$-Tutte polynomial for a list $\mathcal{A}$ of elements in a finitely generated abelian group $Γ$ and an abelian group $G$, which is defined by counting the number of homomorphisms from associated finite abelian groups to $G$.
The $G$-Tutte polynomial is a common generalization of the (arithmetic) Tutte polynomial for realizable (arithmetic) matroids, the characteristic quasi-polynomial for integral arrangements, Brändén-Moci's arithmetic version of the partition function of an abelian group-valued Potts model, and the modified Tutte-Krushkal-Renhardy polynomial for a finite CW-complex.
As in the classical case, $G$-Tutte polynomials carry topological and enumerative information (e.g., the Euler characteristic, point counting and the Poincaré polynomial) of abelian Lie group arrangements.
We also discuss differences between the arithmetic Tutte and the $G$-Tutte polynomials related to the axioms for arithmetic matroids and the (non-)positivity of coefficients.
Approaching $\frac{3}{2}$ for the $s$-$t$-path TSP

We show that there is a polynomial-time algorithm with approximation guarantee $\frac{3}{2}+ε$ for the $s$-$t$-path TSP, for any fixed $ε>0$. It is well known that Wolsey's analysis of Christofides' algorithm also works for the $s$-$t$-path TSP with its natural LP relaxation except for the narrow cuts (in which the LP solution has value less than two). A fixed optimum tour has either a single edge in a narrow cut (then call the edge and the cut lonely) or at least three (then call the cut busy). Our algorithm "guesses" (by dynamic programming) lonely cuts and edges. Then we partition the instance into smaller instances and strengthen the LP, requiring value at least three for busy cuts. By setting up a $k$-stage recursive dynamic program, we can compute a spanning tree $(V,S)$ and an LP solution $y$ such that $(\frac{1}{2}+O(2^{-k}))y$ is in the $T$-join polyhedron, where $T$ is the set of vertices whose degree in $S$ has the wrong parity.
Colouring perfect graphs with bounded clique number

A graph is perfect if the chromatic number of every induced subgraph equals the size of its largest clique, and an algorithm of Grötschel, Lovász, and Schrijver from 1988 finds an optimal colouring of a perfect graph in polynomial time. But this algorithm uses the ellipsoid method, and it is a well-known open question to construct a "combinatorial" polynomial-time algorithm that yields an optimal colouring of a perfect graph.
A skew partition in $G$ is a partition $(A,B)$ of $V(G)$ such that $G[A]$ is not connected and $\bar{G}[B]$ is not connected, where $\bar{G}$ denotes the complement graph ; and it is balanced if an additional parity condition of paths in $G$ and $\bar{G}$ is satisfied.
In this paper we first give a polynomial-time algorithm that, with input a perfect graph, outputs a balanced skew partition if there is one. Then we use this to obtain a combinatorial algorithm that finds an optimal colouring of a perfect graph with clique number $k$, in time that is polynomial for fixed $k$.
Flow polytopes of partitions
Recent progress on flow polytopes indicates many interesting families with product formulas for their volume. These product formulas are all proved using analytic techniques. Our work breaks from this pattern. We define a family of closely related flow polytopes $\mathcal{F}_{(λ, {\bf a})}$ for each partition shape $λ$ and netflow vector ${\bf a}\in \mathbb{Z}^n_{> 0}$. In each such family, we prove that there is a polytope (the limiting one in a sense) which is a product of scaled simplices, explaining their product volumes. We also show that the combinatorial type of all polytopes in a fixed family $\mathcal{F}_{(λ, {\bf a})}$ is the same. When $λ$ is a staircase shape and ${\bf a}$ is the all ones vector the latter result specializes to a theorem of the first author with Morales and Rhoades, which shows that the combinatorial type of the Tesler polytope is a product of simplices.
The Tutte q-Polynomial
$q$-Matroids are defined on complemented modular support lattices. Minors of length 2 are of four types as in a "classical" matroid. Tutte polynomials $τ(x,y)$ of matroids are calculated either by recursion over deletion/contraction of single elements, by an enumeration of bases with respect to internal/external activities, or by substitution $x \to (x-1),\; y \to (y-1)$ in their rank generating functions $ρ(x,y)$. The $q$-analogue of the passage from a Tutte polynomial to its corresponding RGF is straight-forward, but the analogue of the reverse process $x \to (x-1),\; y \to (y-1)$ is more delicate.
For matroids $M(S)$ on a set $S$, and relative to any linear order on the points, the concept of internal/external activity of a point relative to a basis gives rise to a partition of the underlying Boolean algebra $B(S)$ into a set of "prime-free" (or "structureless") minors, such minors being direct sums of loops and isthmi (coloops), with one such prime-free minor for each basis. What usually goes unnoticed is that each prime-free minor has a unique clopen flat. The latter property carries over to $q$-matroids, but each prime-free minor will contain many bases. So internal and external activity in $q$-matroids must be defined not for points relative to bases, but rather for coverings in the underlying complemented modular lattice. Following lattice paths from arbitrary subspaces $A$ along active coverings (downward for internally active, upward for externally active) will lead to the unique clopen subspace in the prime-free minor containing the subspace $A$.
There are a number of interesting questions concerning $q$-matroids that remain unsolved.

Set partitions avoiding $k$-crossing and $k$-nesting have been extensively studied from the aspects of both combinatorics and mathematical biology. By using the generating tree technique, the obstinate kernel method and Zeilberger's algorithm, Lin confirmed a conjecture due independently to the author and Martinez-Savage that asserts inversion sequences with no weakly decreasing subsequence of length 3 and enhanced 3-nonnesting partitions have the same cardinality. In this paper, we provide a bijective proof of this conjecture. Our bijection also enables us to provide a new bijective proof of a conjecture posed by Duncan and Steingrímsson, which was proved by the author via an intermediate structure of growth diagrams for $01$-fillings of Ferrers shapes.
Major index over descent for pattern-avoiding permutations
An open conjecture in pattern avoidance theory is that the distribution of the major index among 321-avoiding permutations is distributed unimodally. We construct a formula for this distribution, and in the case of 2 descents prove unimodality, with unimodality for 3 through 5 descents likely being little more complicated. The formula refines the $q$-analogue of the Frame-Robinson-Thrall hooklength formula for two-rowed partitions, and in the latter part of the paper we discuss another theorem of the same type, and further exploration toward this question. We also give observations on the analogous behaviors for other permutation patterns of length 3.

Assume $\mathsf{M}_n$ is the $n$-dimensional permutation module for the symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$, and let $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$ be its $k$-fold tensor power. The partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ maps surjectively onto the centralizer algebra $\mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k})$ for all $k, n \in \mathbb{Z}_{\ge 1}$ and isomorphically when $n \ge 2k$. We describe the image of the surjection $Φ_{k,n}:\mathsf{P}_k(n) \to \mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k})$ explicitly in terms of the orbit basis of $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ and show that when $2k > n$ the kernel of $Φ_{k,n}$ is generated by a single essential idempotent $\mathsf{e}_{k,n}$, which is an orbit basis element. We obtain a presentation for $\mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k})$ by imposing one additional relation, $\mathsf{e}_{k,n} = 0$, to the standard presentation of the partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ when $2k > n$. As a consequence, we obtain the fundamental theorems of invariant theory for the symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$. We show under the natural embedding of the partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_n(n)$ into $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ for $k \ge n$ that the essential idempotent $\mathsf{e}_{n,n}$ generates the kernel of $Φ_{k,n}$. Therefore, the relation $\mathsf{e}_{n,n} = 0$ can replace $\mathsf{e}_{k,n} = 0$ when $k \ge n$.
Diagonal sum of infinite image partition regular matrices
A finite or infinite matrix $A$ is image partition regular provided that whenever $\mathbb N$ is finitely colored, there must be some $\vec{x}$ with entries from $\mathbb N$ such that all entries of $A\vec{x}$ are in some color class. In [6], it was proved that the diagonal sum of a finite and an infinite image partition regular matrix is also image partition regular. It was also shown there that centrally image partition regular matrices are closed under diagonal sum. Using Theorem 3.3 of [2], one can conclude that diagonal sum of two infinite image partition regular matrices may not be image partition regular. In this paper we shall study the image partition regularity of diagonal sum of some infinite image partition regular matrices. In many cases it will produce more infinite image partition regular matrices.

We give new product formulas for the number of standard Young tableaux of certain skew shapes and for the principal evaluation of the certain Schubert polynomials. These are proved by utilizing symmetries for evaluations of factorial Schur functions, extensively studied in the first two papers in the series "Hook formulas for skew shapes" [arxiv:1512.08348, arxiv:1610.04744]. We also apply our technology to obtain determinantal and product formulas for the partition function of certain weighted lozenge tilings, and give various probabilistic and asymptotic applications.
A heuristic algorithm for the Bin Packing Problem with Conflicts on Interval Graphs
In this paper we deal with the Bin Packing Problem with Conflicts on interval graphs: given an interval graph, a nonnegative integer weight for each vertex, and a nonnegative integer B, find a partition of the vertex set of the graph into k subsets such that the sum of the weights of the vertices assigned to same subset is less than or equal to B, two vertices connected by an edge do not belong to the same subset, and k is minimum. We design a heuristic algorithm, and propose a new random interval graph generator which builds interval conflict graphs with desired edge density. We test the algorithm on a huge test bed, and compare the results with existing algorithms.
Cut Tree Structures with Applications on Contraction-Based Sparsification
We introduce three new cut tree structures of graphs $G$ in which the vertex set of the tree is a partition of $V(G)$ and contractions of tree vertices satisfy sparsification requirements that preserve various types of cuts. Recently, Kawarabayashi and Thorup \cite{Kawarabayashi2015a} presented the first deterministic near-linear edge-connectivity recognition algorithm. A crucial step in this algorithm uses the existence of vertex subsets of a simple graph $G$ whose contractions leave a graph with $\tilde{O}(n/δ)$ vertices and $\tilde{O}(n)$ edges ($n := |V(G)|$) such that all non-trivial min-cuts of $G$ are preserved. We improve this result by eliminating the poly-logarithmic factors, that is, we show a contraction-based sparsification that leaves $O(n/δ)$ vertices and $O(n)$ edges and preserves all non-trivial min-cuts. We complement this result by giving a sparsification that leaves $O(n/δ)$ vertices and $O(n)$ edges such that all (possibly not minimum) cuts of size less than $δ$ are preserved, by using contractions in a second tree structure. As consequence, we have that every simple graph has $O(n/δ)$ $δ$-edge-connected components, and, if it is connected, it has $O((n/δ)^2)$ non-trivial min-cuts. All these results are proven to be asymptotically optimal.
By using a third tree structure, we give a new lower bound on the number of \emph{pendant pairs}. The previous best bound was given 1974 by Mader, who showed that every simple graph contains $Ω(δ^2)$ pendant pairs. We improve this result by showing that every simple graph $G$ with $δ\geq 5$ or $λ\geq 4$ or $κ\geq 3$ contains $Ω(δn)$ pendant pairs. We prove that this bound is asymptotically tight from several perspectives, and that $Ω(δn)$ pendant pairs can be computed efficiently.
On the combinatorics of Riordan arrays and Sheffer polynomials: monoids, operads and monops
We introduce a new algebraic construction, {\em monop}, that combines monoids (with respect to the product of species), and operads (monoids with respect to the substitution of species) in the same algebraic structure. By the use of properties of cancellative set-monops we construct a family of partially ordered sets whose prototypical examples are the Dowling lattices. They generalize the partition posets associated to a cancellative operad, and the subset posets associated to a cancellative monoid. Their generalized Withney numbers of the first and second kind are the entries of a Riordan matrix and its inverse. Equivalently, they are the connecting coefficients of two umbral inverse Sheffer sequences with the family of powers $\{x^n\}_{n=0}^{\infty}$. We study algebraic monops, their associated algebras and the free monop-algebras, as part of a program in progress to develop a theory of Koszul duality for monops.
Higher Order Turán Inequalities for the Partition Function

The Turán inequalities and the higher order Turán inequalities arise in the study of Maclaurin coefficients of an entire function in the Laguerre-Pólya class. A real sequence $\{a_{n}\}$ is said to satisfy the Turán inequalities if for $n\geq 1$, $a_n^2-a_{n-1}a_{n+1}\geq 0$. It is said to satisfy the higher order Turán inequalities if for $n\geq 1$, $4(a_{n}^2-a_{n-1}a_{n+1})(a_{n+1}^2-a_{n}a_{n+2})-(a_{n}a_{n+1}-a_{n-1}a_{n+2})^2\geq 0$. A sequence satisfying the Turán inequalities is also called log-concave. For the partition function $p(n)$, DeSalvo and Pak showed that for $n>25$, the sequence $\{ p(n)\}_{n> 25}$ is log-concave, that is, $p(n)^2-p(n-1)p(n+1)>0$ for $n> 25$. It was conjectured by Chen that $p(n)$ satisfies the higher order Turán inequalities for $n\geq 95$. In this paper, we prove this conjecture by using the Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher formula to derive an upper bound and a lower bound for $p(n+1)p(n-1)/p(n)^2$. Consequently, for $n\geq 95$, the Jensen polynomials $g_{3,n-1}(x)=p(n-1)+3p(n)x+3p(n+1)x^2+p(n+2)x^3$ have only real zeros. We conjecture that for any positive integer $m\geq 4$ there exists an integer $N(m)$ such that for $n\geq N(m) $, the polynomials $\sum_{k=0}^m {m\choose k}p(n+k)x^k$ have only real zeros. This conjecture was independently posed by Ono.

Finally, we study the properties of weighted 7-colored partitions weighted by the parity of certain partition statistics.

Let $m\ge 2$ be a fixed positive integer. Suppose that $m^j \leq n< m^{j+1}$ is a positive integer for some $j\ge 0$. Denote $b_{m}(n)$ the number of $m$-ary partitions of $n$, where each part of the partition is a power of $m$. In this paper, we show that $b_m(n)$ can be represented as a $j$-fold summation by constructing a one-to-one correspondence between the $m$-ary partitions and a special class of integer sequences rely only on the base $m$ representation of $n$. It directly reduces to Andrews, Fraenkel and Sellers' characterization of the values $b_{m}(mn)$ modulo $m$. Moreover, denote $c_{m}(n)$ the number of $m$-ary partitions of $n$ without gaps, wherein if $m^i$ is the largest part, then $m^k$ for each $0\leq k<i$ also appears as a part. We also obtain an enumeration formula for $c_m(n)$ which leads to an alternative representation for the congruences of $c_m(mn)$ due to Andrews, Fraenkel, and Sellers.

We prove a conjecture due independently to Yan and Martinez--Savage that asserts inversion sequences with no weakly decreasing subsequence of length $3$ and enhanced $3$-noncrossing partitions have the same cardinality. Our approach applies both the generating tree technique and the so-called obstinate kernel method developed by Bousquet-Mélou. One application of this equinumerosity is a discovery of an intriguing identity involving numbers of classical and enhanced $3$-noncrossing partitions.
