Let $k$ be a positive integer and let $D$ be a digraph. A path partition $\sP$ of $D$ is a set of vertex-disjoint paths which covers $V(D)$. Its $k$-norm is defined as $\sum_{P \in \sP} \Min{|V(P)|, k}$. A path partition is $k$-optimal if its $k$-norm is minimum among all path partitions of $D$. A partial $k$-coloring is a collection of $k$ disjoint stable sets. A partial $k$-coloring $\sC$ is orthogonal to a path partition $\sP$ if each path $P \in \sP$ meets $\min\{|P|,k\}$ distinct sets of $\sC$. Berge (1982) conjectured that every $k$-optimal path partition of $D$ has a partial $k$-coloring orthogonal to it. A (path) $k$-pack of $D$ is a collection of at most $k$ vertex-disjoint paths in $D$. Its weight is the number of vertices it covers. A $k$-pack is optimal if its weight is maximum among all $k$-packs of $D$. A coloring of $D$ is a partition of $V(D)$ into stable sets. A $k$-pack $\sP$ is orthogonal to a coloring $\sC$ if each set $C \in \sC$ meets $\Min{|C|, k}$ paths of $\sP$. Aharoni, Hartman and Hoffman (1985) conjectured that every optimal $k$-pack of $D$ has a coloring orthogonal to it. A digraph $D$ is semicomplete if every pair of distinct vertices of $D$ is adjacent. A digraph $D$ is locally in-semicomplete if, for every vertex $v \in V(D)$, the in-neighborhood of $v$ induces a semicomplete digraph. Locally out-semicomplete digraphs are defined similarly. In this paper, we prove Berge's and Aharoni-Hartman-Hoffman's Conjectures for locally in/out-semicomplete digraphs.
On Minimum Bisection and Related Cut Problems in Trees and Tree-Like Graphs

Minimum Bisection denotes the NP-hard problem to partition the vertex set of a graph into two sets of equal sizes while minimizing the width of the bisection, which is defined as the number of edges between these two sets. We first consider this problem for trees and prove that the minimum bisection width of every tree $T$ on $n$ vertices satisfies $MinBis(T) \leq 8 n Δ(T) / diam(T)$. Second, we generalize this to arbitrary graphs with a given tree decomposition $(T,X)$ and give an upper bound on the minimum bisection width that depends on the structure of $(T,X)$. Moreover, we show that a bisection satisfying our general bound can be computed in time proportional to the encoding length of the tree decomposition when the latter is provided as input.
Approximating the Minimum $k$-Section Width in Bounded-Degree Trees with Linear Diameter
Minimum $k$-Section denotes the NP-hard problem to partition the vertex set of a graph into $k$ sets of sizes as equal as possible while minimizing the cut width, which is the number of edges between these sets. When $k$ is an input parameter and $n$ denotes the number of vertices, it is NP-hard to approximate the width of a minimum $k$-section within a factor of $n^c$ for any $c<1$, even when restricted to trees with constant diameter. Here, we show that every tree $T$ allows a $k$-section of width at most $(k-1) (2 + 16n / diam(T) ) Δ(T)$. This implies a polynomial-time constant-factor approximation for the Minimum $k$-Section Problem when restricted to trees with linear diameter and constant maximum degree. Moreover, we extend our results from trees to arbitrary graphs with a given tree decomposition.
A plurality problem with three colors and query size three

The Plurality problem - introduced by Aigner \cite{A2004} - has many variants. In this article we deal with the following version: suppose we are given $n$ balls, each of them colored by one of three colors. A \textit{plurality ball} is one such that its color class is strictly larger than any other color class. Questioner wants to find a plurality ball as soon as possible or state there is no, by asking triplets (or $k$-sets, in general), while Adversary partition the triplets into color classes as an answer for the queries and wants to postpone the possibility of determining a plurality ball (or stating there is no).
We denote by $A_p(n,3)$ the largest number of queries needed to ask if both play optimally (and Questioner asks triplets). We provide an almost precise result in case of even $n$ by proving that for $n \ge 4$ even we have $$\frac{3}{4}n-2 \le A_p(n,3) \le \frac{3}{4}n-\frac{1}{2},$$ and for $n \ge 3$ odd we have $$\frac{3}{4}n-O(\log n) \le A_p(n,3) \le \frac{3}{4}n-\frac{1}{2}.$$
We also prove some bounds on the number of queries needed to ask for larger $k$.
Asymptotics for a Class of Meandric Systems, via the Hasse Diagram of NC(n)

We consider closed meandric systems, and their equivalent description in terms of the Hasse diagrams of the lattices of non-crossing partitions $NC(n)$. In this equivalent description, the number of components of a random meandric system of order $n$ translates into the distance between two partitions in $NC(n)$. We focus on a class of couples $(π,ρ)\in NC(n)^2$ -- namely the ones where $π$ is conditioned to be an interval partition -- for which it turns out to be tractable to study distances in the Hasse diagram. As a consequence, we observe a non-trivial class of meanders (i.e. connected meandric systems), which we call "meanders with shallow top", and which can be explicitly enumerated. Moreover, the expected number of components for a random "meandric system with shallow top", is asymptotically $(9n+28)/27$. Our calculations concerning expected number of components are related to the idea of taking the derivative at $t=1$ in a semigroup for the operation $\boxplus$ of free probability (but the underlying considerations are presented in a self-contained way, and can be followed without assuming a free probability background).
Let $c_{n}'$ denote the expected number of components of a general, unconditioned, meandric system of order $n$. A variation of the methods used in the shallow-top case allows us to prove that $\mathrm{lim\ inf}_{n\to\infty}c_{n}'/n\geq0.17$. We also note that, by a direct elementary argument, one has $\mathrm{lim\ sup}_{n\to\infty}c_{n}'/n\leq0.5$. These bounds support the conjecture that $c_{n}'$ follows a regime of "constant times $n$" (where numerical experiments suggest that the constant should be $\approx0.23$).

An internal partition of a graph is a partitioning of the vertex set into two parts such that for every vertex, at least half of its neighbors are on its side. We prove that for every positive integer $r$, asymptotically almost every $2r$-regular graph has an internal partition.

We explicitly describe the isomorphism between two combinatorial realizations of Kashiwara's infinity crystal in types B and C. The first realization is in terms of marginally large tableaux and the other is in terms of Kostant partitions coming from PBW bases. We also discuss a stack notation for Kostant partitions which simplifies that realization.

We study a two-color loop model known as the $C^{(1)}_2$ loop model. We define a free-fermionic regime for this model, and show that under this assumption it can be transformed into a double dimer model. We then compute its free energy on periodic planar graphs. We also study the star-triangle relation or Yang-Baxter equations of this model, and show that after a proper parametrization they can be summed up into a single relation known as Kashaev's relation. This is enough to identify the solution of Kashaev's relation as the partition function of a $C^{(1)}_2$ loop model with some boundary conditions, thus solving an open question of Kenyon and Pemantle about the combinatorics of Kashaev's relation.
Dioid Partitions of Groups

A partition of a group is a dioid partition if the following three conditions are met: The setwise product of any two parts is a union of parts, there is a part that multiplies as an identity element, and the inverse of a part is a part. This kind of a group partition was first introduced by Tamaschke in 1968. We show that a dioid partition defines a dioid structure over the group, analogously to the way a Schur ring over a group is defined. After proving fundamental properties of dioid partitions, we focus on three part dioid partitions of cyclic groups of prime order. We provide classification results for their isomorphism types as well as for the partitions themselves.

We prove various inequalities between the number of partitions with the bound on the largest part and some restrictions on occurrences of parts. We explore many interesting consequences of these partition inequalities. In particular, we show that for $L\geq 1$, the number of partitions with $l-s \leq L$ and $s=1$ is greater than the number of partitions with $l-s\leq L$ and $s>1$. Here $l$ and $s$ are the largest part and the smallest part of the partition, respectively.
Analyzing Boltzmann Samplers for Bose-Einstein Condensates with Dirichlet Generating Functions

Boltzmann sampling is commonly used to uniformly sample objects of a particular size from large combinatorial sets. For this technique to be effective, one needs to prove that (1) the sampling procedure is efficient and (2) objects of the desired size are generated with sufficiently high probability. We use this approach to give a provably efficient sampling algorithm for a class of weighted integer partitions related to Bose-Einstein condensation from statistical physics. Our sampling algorithm is a probabilistic interpretation of the ordinary generating function for these objects, derived from the symbolic method of analytic combinatorics. Using the Khintchine-Meinardus probabilistic method to bound the rejection rate of our Boltzmann sampler through singularity analysis of Dirichlet generating functions, we offer an alternative approach to analyze Boltzmann samplers for objects with multiplicative structure.
Improved Bounds for the Graham-Pollak Problem for Hypergraphs

For a fixed $r$, let $f_r(n)$ denote the minimum number of complete $r$-partite $r$-graphs needed to partition the complete $r$-graph on $n$ vertices. The Graham-Pollak theorem asserts that $f_2(n)=n-1$. An easy construction shows that $f_r(n) \leq (1+o(1))\binom{n}{\lfloor r/2 \rfloor}$, and we write $c_r$ for the least number such that $f_r(n) \leq c_r (1+o(1))\binom{n}{\lfloor r/2 \rfloor}$.
It was known that $c_r < 1$ for each even $r \geq 4$, but this was not known for any odd value of $r$. In this short note, we prove that $c_{295}<1$. Our method also shows that $c_r \rightarrow 0$, answering another open problem.
Heden's bound on the tail of a vector space partition

A vector space partition of $\mathbb{F}_q^v$ is a collection of subspaces such that every non-zero vector is contained in a unique element. We improve a lower bound of Heden, in a subcase, on the number of elements of the smallest occurring dimension in a vector space partition. To this end, we introduce the notion of $q^r$-divisible sets of $k$-subspaces in $\mathbb{F}_q^v$. By geometric arguments we obtain non-existence results for these objects, which then imply the improved result of Heden.

In 1997 Bousquet-Mélou and Eriksson introduced lecture hall partitions as the inversion vectors of elements of the parabolic quotient $\widetilde{C}/C$. We provide a new view of their correspondence that allows results in one domain to be translated into the other. We determine the equivalence between combinatorial statistics in each domain and use this correspondence to translate certain generating function formulas on lecture hall partitions to new observations about $\widetilde{C}/C$.
Polynomial tuning of multiparametric combinatorial samplers

Boltzmann samplers and the recursive method are prominent algorithmic frameworks for the approximate-size and exact-size random generation of large combinatorial structures, such as maps, tilings, RNA sequences or various tree-like structures. In their multiparametric variants, these samplers allow to control the profile of expected values corresponding to multiple combinatorial parameters. One can control, for instance, the number of leaves, profile of node degrees in trees or the number of certain subpatterns in strings. However, such a flexible control requires an additional non-trivial tuning procedure. In this paper, we propose an efficient polynomial-time, with respect to the number of tuned parameters, tuning algorithm based on convex optimisation techniques. Finally, we illustrate the efficiency of our approach using several applications of rational, algebraic and Pólya structures including polyomino tilings with prescribed tile frequencies, planar trees with a given specific node degree distribution, and weighted partitions.

We study the spectrum of permutation orbifolds of 2d CFTs. We find examples where the light spectrum grows faster than Hagedorn, which is different from known cases such as symmetric orbifolds. We also describe how to compute their partition functions using a generalization of Hecke operators.
Partitioning a graph into monochromatic connected subgraphs
A well-known result by Haxell and Kohayakawa states that the vertices of an $r$-coloured complete graph can be partitioned into $r$ monochromatic connected subgraphs of distinct colours; this is a slightly weaker variant of a conjecture by Erdős, Pyber and Gyárfás that states that there exists a partition into $r-1$ monochromatic connected subgraphs. We consider a variant of this problem, where the complete graph is replaced by a graph with large minimum degree, and prove two conjectures of Bal and DeBiasio, for two and three colours.
Self-avoiding walk on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with Yang-Baxter weights: universality of critical fugacity and 2-point function

We consider a self-avoiding walk model (SAW) on the faces of the square lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2$. This walk can traverse the same face twice, but crosses any edge at most once. The weight of a walk is a product of local weights: each square visited by the walk yields a weight that depends on the way the walk passes through it. The local weights are parametrised by angles $θ\in[\fracπ{3},\frac{2π}{3}]$ and satisfy the Yang-Baxter equation. The self-avoiding walk is embedded in the plane by replacing the square faces of the grid with rhombi with corresponding angles.
By means of the Yang-Baxter transformation, we show that the 2-point function of the walk in the half-plane does not depend on the rhombic tiling (i.e. on the angles chosen). In particular, this statistic coincides with that of the self-avoiding walk on the hexagonal lattice. Indeed, the latter can be obtained by choosing all angles $θ$ equal to $\fracπ{3}$.
For the hexagonal lattice, the critical fugacity of SAW was recently proved to be equal to $1+\sqrt{2}$. We show that the same is true for any choice of angles. In doing so, we also give a new short proof to the fact that the partition function of self-avoiding bridges in a strip of the hexagonal lattice tends to 0 as the width of the strip tends to infinity. This proof also yields a quantitative bound on the convergence.

We present nine bijections between classes of Dyck paths and classes of standard Young tableaux (SYT). In particular, we consider SYT of flag and rectangular shapes, we give Dyck path descriptions for certain SYT of height at most 3, and we introduce a special class of labeled Dyck paths of semilength $n$ that is shown to be in bijection with the set of all SYT with $n$ boxes. In addition, we present bijections from certain classes of Motzkin paths to SYT. As a natural framework for some of our bijections, we introduce a class of set partitions which in some sense is dual to the known class of noncrossing partitions.
Out-degree reducing partitions of digraphs

Let $k$ be a fixed integer. We determine the complexity of finding a $p$-partition $(V_1, \dots, V_p)$ of the vertex set of a given digraph such that the maximum out-degree of each of the digraphs induced by $V_i$, ($1\leq i\leq p$) is at least $k$ smaller than the maximum out-degree of $D$. We show that this problem is polynomial-time solvable when $p\geq 2k$ and ${\cal NP}$-complete otherwise. The result for $k=1$ and $p=2$ answers a question posed in \cite{bangTCS636}. We also determine, for all fixed non-negative integers $k_1,k_2,p$, the complexity of deciding whether a given digraph of maximum out-degree $p$ has a $2$-partition $(V_1,V_2)$ such that the digraph induced by $V_i$ has maximum out-degree at most $k_i$ for $i\in [2]$. It follows from this characterization that the problem of deciding whether a digraph has a 2-partition $(V_1,V_2)$ such that each vertex $v\in V_i$ has at least as many neighbours in the set $V_{3-i}$ as in $V_i$, for $i=1,2$ is ${\cal NP}$-complete. This solves a problem from \cite{kreutzerEJC24} on majority colourings.
