On the Dowling and Rhodes lattices and wreath products
Published • View PublicationBIB
Dowling and Rhodes defined different lattices on the set of triples (Subset, Partition, Cross Section) over a fixed finite group G. Although the Rhodes lattice is not a geometric lattice, it defines a matroid in the sense of the theory of Boolean representable simplicial complexes. This turns out to be the direct sum of a complete matroid with a lift matroid of the complete biased graph over G. As is well known, the Dowling lattice defines the frame matroid over a similar biased graph. This gives a new perspective on both matroids and also an application of matroid theory to the theory of finite semigroups. We also make progress on an important question for these classical matroids: what are the minimal Boolean representations and the minimum degree of a Boolean matrix representation?
Cutting a part from many measures

Holmsen, Kynčl and Valculescu recently conjectured that if a finite set $X$ with $\ell n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that is colored by $m$ different colors can be partitioned into $n$ subsets of $\ell$ points each, such that each subset contains points of at least $d$ different colors, then there exists such a partition of $X$ with the additional property that the convex hulls of the $n$ subsets are pairwise disjoint. We prove a continuous analogue of this conjecture, generalized so that each subset contains points of at least $c$ different colors, where we also allow $c$ to be greater than $d$. Furthermore, we give lower bounds on the fraction of the points each of the subsets contains from $c$ different colors. For example, when $n\geq 2$, $d\geq 2$, $c\geq d$ with $m\geq n(c-d)+d$ are integers, and $μ_1, \dots, μ_m$ are $m$ positive finite absolutely continuous measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$, we prove that there exists a partition of $\mathbb{R}^d$ into $n$ convex pieces which equiparts the measures $μ_1, \dots, μ_{d-1}$, and in addition every piece of the partition has positive measure with respect to at least $c$ of the measures $μ_1, \dots, μ_m$.

Recurrence sequences connected with the $m$--ary partition function and their divisibility properties
In this paper we introduce a class of sequences connected with the $m$--ary partition function and investigate their congruence properties. In particular, we get facts about the sequences of $m$--ary partitions $(b_{m}(n))_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ and $m$--ary partitions with no gaps $(c_{m}(n))_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$. We prove, for example, that for any natural number $2<h\leq m+1$ in both sequences $(b_{m}(n))_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ and $(c_{m}(n))_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ any residue class modulo $h$ appears infinitely many times. Moreover, we give new proofs of characterisations modulo $m$ in terms of base--$m$ representation of $n$ for sequences $(b_{m}(n))_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ and $(c_{m}(n))_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$. We also present a general method of finding such characterisations modulo any power of $m$. Using our approach we get description of $(b_{m}(n)\mod{μ_{2}})_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$, where $μ_{2}=m^{2}$ if $m$ is odd and $μ_{2}=m^{2}/2$ if $m$ is even.

Erdos-Hajnal conjecture for graphs with bounded VC-dimension
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension (in short, VC-dimension) of a graph is defined as the VC-dimension of the set system induced by the neighborhoods of its vertices. We show that every $n$-vertex graph with bounded VC-dimension contains a clique or an independent set of size at least $e^{(\log n)^{1 - o(1)}}$. The dependence on the VC-dimension is hidden in the $o(1)$ term. This improves the general lower bound, $e^{c\sqrt{\log n}}$, due to Erdos and Hajnal, which is valid in the class of graphs satisfying any fixed nontrivial hereditary property. Our result is almost optimal and nearly matches the celebrated Erdos-Hajnal conjecture, according to which one can always find a clique or an independent set of size at least $e^{Ω(\log n)}$. Our results partially explain why most geometric intersection graphs arising in discrete and computational geometry have exceptionally favorable Ramsey-type properties. Our main tool is a partitioning result found by Lovász-Szegedy and Alon-Fischer-Newman, which is called the "ultra-strong regularity lemma" for graphs with bounded VC-dimension. We extend this lemma to $k$-uniform hypergraphs, and prove that the number of parts in the partition can be taken to be $(1/\varepsilon)^{O(d)}$, improving the original bound of $(1/\varepsilon)^{O(d^2)}$ in the graph setting. We show that this bound is tight up to an absolute constant factor in the exponent. Moreover, we give an $O(n^k)$-time algorithm for finding a partition meeting the requirements. Finally, we establish tight bounds on Ramsey-Turán numbers for graphs with bounded VC-dimension.

Detachments of Amalgamated 3-uniform Hypergraphs : Factorization Consequences
Published in J. Combin. Des. 20 (2012), no. 12, 527-549 • View PublicationBIB
A detachment of a hypergraph $\scr F$ is a hypergraph obtained from $\scr F$ by splitting some or all of its vertices into more than one vertex. Amalgamating a hypergraph $\scr G$ can be thought of as taking $\scr G$, partitioning its vertices, then for each element of the partition squashing the vertices to form a single vertex in the amalgamated hypergraph $\scr F$. In this paper we use Nash-Williams lemma on laminar families to prove a detachment theorem for amalgamated 3-uniform hypergraphs, which yields a substantial generalization of previous amalgamation theorems by Hilton, Rodger and Nash-Williams. To demonstrate the power of our detachment theorem, we show that the complete 3-uniform $n$-partite multi-hypergraph $λK_{m_1,\ldots,m_n}^{3}$ can be expressed as the union $\scr G_1\cup \ldots \cup\scr G_k$ of $k$ edge-disjoint factors, where for $i=1,\ldots, k$, $\scr G_i$ is $r_i$-regular, if and only if (i) $m_i=m_j:=m$ for all $1\leq i,j\leq k$, (ii) $3$ divides $r_imn$ for each $i$, $1\leq i\leq k$, and (iii) $\sum_{i=1}^{k} r_i=λ\binom{n-1}{2}m^2$.

Partitions of unity in $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)$, negative continued fractions, and dissections of polygons

We characterize sequences of positive integers $(a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_n)$ for which the $2\times2$ matrix $\left( \begin{array}{cc} a_n&-1 1&0 \end{array} \right) \left( \begin{array}{cc} a_{n-1}&-1 1&0 \end{array} \right) \cdots \left( \begin{array}{cc} a_1&-1 1&0 \end{array} \right) $ is either the identity matrix $\mathrm Id$, its negative $-\mathrm Id$, or square root of $-\mathrm Id$. This extends a theorem of Conway and Coxeter that classifies such solutions subject to a total positivity restriction.

A New Proof for a Triple Product Formula for Plane Partitions
Stanley generalized MacMahon's classical theorem by proving a product formula for the norm-trace generating function for plane partition with unbounded parts. In his recent work on biothorgonal polynomials, Kamioka proved a finite analogue of Stanley's formula for plane partitions with bounded parts (arXiv:1508.01674). In this paper, we use techniques from the enumeration of tilings to give a new proof for Kamioka's formula.

Deformation Cones of nested Braid fans
Published • View PublicationBIB
Generalized permutohedra are deformations of regular permutohedra, and arise in many different fields of mathematics. One important characterization of generalized permutohedra is the Submodular Theorem, which is related to the deformation cone of the Braid fan. We lay out general techniques for determining deformation cones of a fixed polytope and apply it to the Braid fan to obtain a natural combinatorial proof for the Submodular Theorem. We also consider a refinement of the Braid fan, called the nested Braid fan, and construct usual (respectively, generalized) nested permutohedra which have the nested Braid fan as (respectively, refining) their normal fan. We extend many results on generalized permutohedra to this new family of polytopes, including a one-to-one correspondence between faces of nested permutohedra and chains in ordered partition posets, and a theorem analogous to the Submodular Theorem. Finally, we show that the nested Braid fan is the barycentric subdivision of the Braid fan, which gives another way to construct this new combinatorial object.

Factorial characters of classical Lie groups and their combinatorial realisations
Just as the definition of factorial Schur functions as a ratio of determinants allows one to show that they satisfy a Jacobi-Trudi-type identity and have an explicit combinatorial realisation in terms of semistandard tableaux, so we offer here definitions of factorial irreducible characters of the classical Lie groups as ratios of determinants that share these two features. These factorial characters are each specified by a partition, $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,\ldots,λ_n)$, and in each case a flagged Jacobi-Trudi identity is derived that expresses the factorial character as a determinant of corresponding factorial characters specified by one-part partitions, $(m)$, for which we supply generating functions. These identities are established by manipulating determinants through the use of certain recurrence relations derived from these generating functions. The transitions to combinatorial realisations of the factorial characters in terms of tableaux are then established by means of non-intersecting lattice path models. The results apply to $gl(n)$, $so(2n+1)$, $sp(2n)$ and $o(2n)$, and are extended to the case of $so(2n)$ by making use of newly defined factorial difference characters.

Volumes and Ehrhart polynomials of flow polytopes
The Lidskii formula for the type $A_n$ root system expresses the volume and Ehrhart polynomial of the flow polytope of the complete graph with nonnegative integer netflows in terms of Kostant partition functions. For every integer polytope the volume is the leading coefficient of the Ehrhart polynomial. The beauty of the Lidskii formula is the revelation that for these polytopes its Ehrhart polynomial function can be deduced from its volume function! Baldoni and Vergne generalized Lidskii's result for flow polytopes of arbitrary graphs $G$ and nonnegative integer netflows. While their formulas are combinatorial in nature, their proofs are based on residue computations. In this paper we construct canonical polytopal subdivisions of flow polytopes which we use to prove the Baldoni-Vergne-Lidskii formulas. In contrast with the original computational proof of these formulas, our proof reveal their geometry and combinatorics. We conclude by exhibiting enumerative properties of the Lidskii formulas via our canonical polytopal subdivisions.

Asymptotic Properties of Random Restricted Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study two types of probability measures on the set of integer partitions of $n$ with at most $m$ parts. The first one chooses the random partition with a chance related to its largest part only. We then obtain the limiting distributions of all of the parts together and that of the largest part as $n$ tends to infinity while $m$ is fixed or tends to infinity. In particular, if $m$ goes to infinity not too fast, the largest part satisfies the central limit theorem. The second measure is very general. It includes the Dirichlet distribution and the uniform distribution as special cases. We derive the asymptotic distributions of the parts jointly by taking limits of $n$ and $m$ in the same manner as that in the first probability measure.

Efficient Removal without Efficient Regularity
Published • View PublicationBIB
Obtaining an efficient bound for the triangle removal lemma is one of the most outstanding open problems of extremal combinatorics. Perhaps the main bottleneck for achieving this goal is that triangle-free graphs can be highly unstructured. For example, triangle-free graphs might have only regular partitions (in the sense of Szemerédi) of tower-type size. And indeed, essentially all the graph properties ${\cal P}$ for which removal lemmas with reasonable bounds were obtained, are such that every graph satisfying ${\cal P}$ has a small regular partition. So in some sense, a barrier for obtaining an efficient removal lemma for property ${\cal P}$ was having an efficient regularity lemma for graphs satisfying ${\cal P}$. In this paper we consider the property of being induced $C_4$-free, which also suffers from the fact that a graph might satisfy this property but still have only regular partitions of tower-type size. By developing a new approach for this problem we manage to overcome this barrier and thus obtain a merely exponential bound for the induced $C_4$ removal lemma. We thus obtain the first efficient removal lemma that does not rely on an efficient version of the regularity lemma. This is the first substantial progress on a problem raised by Alon in 2001, and more recently by Alon, Conlon and Fox.

Hall-Littlewood polynomials and a Hecke action on ordered set partitions

We construct an action of the Hecke algebra $H_n(q)$ on a quotient of the polynomial ring $F[x_1, \dots, x_n]$, where $F = \mathbb{Q}(q)$. The dimension of our quotient ring is the number of $k$-block ordered set partitions of $\{1, 2, \dots, n \}$. This gives a quantum analog of a construction of Haglund-Rhoades-Shimozono and interpolates between their result at $q = 1$ and work of Huang-Rhoades at $q = 0$.

Hopf monoids and generalized permutahedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Generalized permutahedra are a family of polytopes with a rich combinatorial structure and strong connections to optimization. We prove that they are the universal family of polyhedra with a certain Hopf algebraic structure. Their antipode is remarkably simple: the antipode of a polytope is the alternating sum of its faces. Our construction provides a unifying framework to organize numerous combinatorial structures, including graphs, matroids, posets, set partitions, linear graphs, hypergraphs, simplicial complexes, building sets, and simple graphs. We highlight three applications: 1. We obtain uniform proofs of numerous old and new results about the Hopf algebraic and combinatorial structures of these families. In particular, we give the optimal formula for the antipode of graphs, posets, matroids, hypergraphs, and building sets, and we answer questions of Humpert--Martin and Rota. 2. We show that the reciprocity theorems of Stanley and Billera--Jia--Reiner on chromatic polynomials of graphs, order polynomials of posets, and BJR-polynomials of matroids are instances of the same reciprocity theorem for generalized permutahedra. 3. We explain why the formulas for the multiplicative and compositional inverses of power series are governed by the face structure of permutahedra and associahedra, respectively, answering a question of Loday. Along the way, we offer a combinatorial user's guide to Hopf monoids.

Some inequalities for $k$-colored partition functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by a partition inequality of Bessenrodt and Ono, we obtain analogous inequalities for $k$-colored partition functions $p_{-k}(n)$ for all $k\geq2$. This enables us to extend the $k$-colored partition function multiplicatively to a function on $k$-colored partitions, and characterize when it has a unique maximum. We conclude with one conjectural inequality that strengthens our results.

Partition Algebras and the Invariant Theory of the Symmetric Group
Published • View PublicationBIB
The symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$ and the partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ centralize one another in their actions on the $k$-fold tensor power $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$ of the $n$-dimensional permutation module $\mathsf{M}_n$ of $\mathsf{S}_n$. The duality afforded by the commuting actions determines an algebra homomorphism $Φ_{k,n}: \mathsf{P}_k(n) \to \mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k})$ from the partition algebra to the centralizer algebra $\mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k})$, which is a surjection for all $k, n \in \mathbb{Z}_{\ge 1}$, and an isomorphism when $n \ge 2k$. We present results that can be derived from the duality between $\mathsf{S}_n$ and $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$; for example, (i) expressions for the multiplicities of the irreducible $\mathsf{S}_n$-summands of $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$, (ii) formulas for the dimensions of the irreducible modules for the centralizer algebra $\mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k})$, (iii) a bijection between vacillating tableaux and set-partition tableaux, (iv) identities relating Stirling numbers of the second kind and the number of fixed points of permutations, and (v) character values for the partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$. When $2k >n$, the map $Φ_{k,n}$ has a nontrivial kernel which is generated as a two-sided ideal by a single idempotent. We describe the kernel and image of $Φ_{k,n}$ in terms of the orbit basis of $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ and explain how the surjection $Φ_{k,n}$ can also be used to obtain the fundamental theorems of invariant theory for the symmetric group.

Boundary optimization for rough sets
Published in Discrete Math. 341 (2018) 2465--2477 • View PublicationBIB
Let $n > m\ge 2$ be integers and let $\mathcal{A}=\{A_1,\dots,A_m\}$ be a partition of $[n]=\{1,\dots,n\}$. For $X \subseteq [n]$, its $\mathcal{A}$-boundary region $\mathcal{A}(X)$ is defined to be the union of those blocks $A_i$ of $\mathcal{A}$ for which $A_i\cap X\neq \emptyset$ and $A_i\cap ([n] \setminus X)\neq \emptyset$. For three different probability distributions on the power set of $[n]$, partitions $\mathcal{A}$ of $[n]$ are determined such that the expected cardinality of the $\mathcal{A}$-boundary region of a randomly chosen subset of $[n]$ is minimal and maximal, respectively. The problem can be reduced to an optimization problem for integer partitions of $n$. In the most difficult case, the concave-convex shape of the corresponding weight function as well as several other inequalities are proved using an integral representation of the weight function. In one case, there is an interesting analogon to the AZ-identity. The study is motivated by the rough set theory.

A general asymptotic formula for distinct partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Many asymptotic formulas exist for unrestricted integer partitions as well as for distinct partitions of integers into a finite number of parts. Szekeres and Canfield have derived an asymptotic formula for the number of partitions that is valid for any value of the number of parts. We obtain general asymptotic formulas for distinct partitions that are valid in a wider range of parameters than the existing asymptotic formulas, and we recover the known asymptotic results as special cases of our general formulas.

Maximal independent sets on a grid graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
An independent vertex set of a graph is a set of vertices of the graph in which no two vertices are adjacent, and a maximal independent set is one that is not a proper subset of any other independent set. In this paper we count the number of maximal independent sets of vertices on a complete rectangular grid graph. More precisely, we provide a recursive matrix-relation producing the partition function with respect to the number of vertices. The asymptotic behavior of the maximal hard square entropy constant is also provided. We adapt the state matrix recursion algorithm, recently invented by the author to answer various two-dimensional regular lattice model problems in enumerative combinatorics and statistical mechanics.
