Arc permutations and unimodal permutations were introduced in the study of triangulations and characters. This paper studies combinatorial properties and structures on these permutations. First, both sets are characterized by pattern avoidance. It is also shown that arc permutations carry a natural affine Weyl group action, and that the number of geodesics between a distinguished pair of antipodes in the associated Schreier graph, as well as the number of maximal chains in the weak order on unimodal permutations, are both equal to twice the number of standard Young tableaux of shifted staircase shape. Finally, a bijection from non-unimodal arc permutations to Young tableaux of certain shapes, which preserves the descent set, is described and applied to deduce a conjectured character formula of Regev.

We use the cluster method to enumerate permutations avoiding consecutive patterns. We reprove and generalize in a unified way several known results and obtain new ones, including some patterns of length 4 and 5, as well as some infinite families of patterns of a given shape. By enumerating linear extensions of certain posets, we find a differential equation satisfied by the inverse of the exponential generating function counting occurrences of the pattern. We prove that for a large class of patterns, this inverse is always an entire function. We also complete the classification of consecutive patterns of length up to 6 into equivalence classes, proving a conjecture of Nakamura. Finally, we show that the monotone pattern asymptotically dominates (in the sense that it is easiest to avoid) all non-overlapping patterns of the same length, thus proving a conjecture of Elizalde and Noy for a positive fraction of all patterns.
The Recognition of Simple-Triangle Graphs and of Linear-Interval Orders is Polynomial

Intersection graphs of geometric objects have been extensively studied, both due to their interesting structure and their numerous applications; prominent examples include interval graphs and permutation graphs. In this paper we study a natural graph class that generalizes both interval and permutation graphs, namely \emph{simple-triangle} graphs. Simple-triangle graphs - also known as \emph{PI} graphs (for Point-Interval) - are the intersection graphs of triangles that are defined by a point on a line $L_{1}$ and an interval on a parallel line $L_{2}$. They lie naturally between permutation and trapezoid graphs, which are the intersection graphs of line segments between $L_{1}$ and $L_{2}$ and of trapezoids between $L_{1}$ and $L_{2}$, respectively. Although various efficient recognition algorithms for permutation and trapezoid graphs are well known to exist, the recognition of simple-triangle graphs has remained an open problem since their introduction by Corneil and Kamula three decades ago. In this paper we resolve this problem by proving that simple-triangle graphs can be recognized in polynomial time. As a consequence, our algorithm also solves a longstanding open problem in the area of partial orders, namely the recognition of \emph{linear-interval orders}, i.e. of partial orders $P=P_{1}\cap P_{2}$, where $P_{1}$ is a linear order and $P_{2}$ is an interval order. This is one of the first results on recognizing partial orders $P$ that are the intersection of orders from two different classes $\mathcal{P}_{1}$ and $\mathcal{P}_{2}$. In complete contrast to this, partial orders $P$ which are the intersection of orders from the same class $\mathcal{P}$ have been extensively investigated, and in most cases the complexity status of these recognition problems has been already established.

We study the joint distribution of descents and inverse descents over the set of permutations of n letters. Gessel conjectured that the two-variable generating function of this distribution can be expanded in a given basis with nonnegative integer coefficients. We investigate the action of the Eulerian operators that give the recurrence for these generating functions. As a result we devise a recurrence for the coefficients but are unable to settle the conjecture. We examine generalizations of the conjecture and obtain a type B analog of the recurrence satisfied by the two-variable generating function. We also exhibit some connections to cyclic descents and cyclic inverse descents. Finally, we propose a combinatorial model in terms of statistics on inversion sequences.

Hurwitz numbers count branched covers of the Riemann sphere with specified ramification, or equivalently, transitive permutation factorizations in the symmetric group with specified cycle types. Monotone Hurwitz numbers count a restricted subset of these branched covers, related to the expansion of complete symmetric functions in the Jucys-Murphy elements, and have arisen in recent work on the the asymptotic expansion of the Harish-Chandra-Itzykson-Zuber integral. In previous work we gave an explicit formula for monotone Hurwitz numbers in genus zero. In this paper we consider monotone Hurwitz numbers in higher genera, and prove a number of results that are reminiscent of those for classical Hurwitz numbers. These include an explicit formula for monotone Hurwitz numbers in genus one, and an explicit form for the generating function in arbitrary positive genus. From the form of the generating function we are able to prove that monotone Hurwitz numbers exhibit a polynomiality that is reminiscent of that for the classical Hurwitz numbers, i.e., up to a specified combinatorial factor, the monotone Hurwitz number in genus g with ramification specified by a given partition is a polynomial indexed by g in the parts of the partition.

The descent algebra of finite Coxeter groups is studied by many famous mathematicians like Bergeron, Brown, Howlett, or Reutenauer. Blessenohl, Hohlweg, and Schocker, for example, proved a symmetry property of the descent algebra, when it is linked to the representation theory of its Coxeter group. The interest is particularly showed for the descent algebra of symmetric group. Thibon determined the eigenvalues and their multiplicities of the action on the group algebra of symmetric group of the descent algebra element, which is the sum over all permutations weighted by q^maj. And even the author diagonalized the matrix of the action of the descent algebra element, which is the sum over all permutations weighted by the new introduced statistic desX. In this article, we give a more general result by determining the eigenvalues and their multiplicities of the action on the group algebra of finite Coxeter group of an element of its descent algebra.

The $N\times N$ complex Hadamard matrices form a real algebraic manifold $C_N$. We have $C_N=M_N(\mathbb T)\cap\sqrt{N}U_N$, and following Tadej and Życzkowski we investigate here the computation of the enveloping tangent space $\widetilde{T}_HC_N=T_HM_N(\mathbb T)\cap T_H\sqrt{N}U_N$, and notably of its dimension $d(H)=\dim(\widetilde{T}_HC_N)$, called undephased defect of $H$. Our main result is an explicit formula for the defect of the Fourier matrix $F_G$ associated to an arbitrary finite abelian group $G=\mathbb Z_{N_1}\times...\times\mathbb Z_{N_r}$. We also comment on the general question "does the associated quantum permutation group see the defect", with a probabilistic speculation involving Diaconis-Shahshahani type variables.

$β(1,0)$-trees provide a convenient description of rooted non-separable planar maps. The involution $h$ on $β(1,0)$-trees was introduced to prove a complicated equidistribution result on a class of pattern-avoiding permutations. In this paper, we describe and enumerate fixed points of the involution $h$. Intriguingly, the fixed points are equinumerous with the fixed points under taking the dual map on rooted non-separable planar maps, even though the fixed points do not go to each other under the know (natural) bijection between the trees and the maps.
Crucial and bicrucial permutations with respect to arithmetic monotone patterns
A pattern $τ$ is a permutation, and an arithmetic occurrence of $τ$ in (another) permutation $π=π_1π_2...π_n$ is a subsequence $π_{i_1}π_{i_2}...π_{i_m}$ of $π$ that is order isomorphic to $τ$ where the numbers $i_1<i_2<...<i_m$ form an arithmetic progression. A permutation is $(k,\ell)$-crucial if it avoids arithmetically the patterns $12... k$ and $\ell(\ell-1)... 1$ but its extension to the right by any element does not avoid arithmetically these patterns. A $(k,\ell)$-crucial permutation that cannot be extended to the left without creating an arithmetic occurrence of $12... k$ or $\ell(\ell-1)... 1$ is called $(k,\ell)$-bicrucial.
In this paper we prove that arbitrary long $(k,\ell)$-crucial and $(k,\ell)$-bicrucial permutations exist for any $k,\ell\geq 3$. Moreover, we show that the minimal length of a $(k,\ell)$-crucial permutation is $\max(k,\ell)(\min(k,\ell)-1)$, while the minimal length of a $(k,\ell)$-bicrucial permutation is at most $2\max(k,\ell)(\min(k,\ell)-1)$, again for $k,\ell\geq3$.
Degeneracy Loci, Pfaffians, and Vexillary Signed Permutations in Types B, C, and D
We define a notion of vexillary signed permutation in types B, C, and D, corresponding to natural degeneracy loci for vector bundles with symmetries of those types. We show that the classes of these loci are given by explicit Pfaffian formulas. The Grassmannian formulas of Kazarian are important special cases, and the corresponding double Schubert polynomials of Ikeda, Mihalcea, and Naruse are shown to be equal to these Pfaffians.
Schur times Schubert via the Fomin-Kirillov algebra
We study multiplication of any Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w$ by a Schur polynomial $s_λ$ (the Schubert polynomial of a Grassmannian permutation) and the expansion of this product in the ring of Schubert polynomials. We derive explicit nonnegative combinatorial expressions for the expansion coefficients for certain special partitions $λ$, including hooks and the 2x2 box. We also prove combinatorially the existence of such nonnegative expansion when the Young diagram of $λ$ is a hook plus a box at the (2,2) corner. We achieve this by evaluating Schubert polynomials at the Dunkl elements of the Fomin-Kirillov algebra and proving special cases of the nonnegativity conjecture of Fomin and Kirillov.
This approach works in the more general setup of the (small) quantum cohomology ring of the complex flag manifold and the corresponding (3-point) Gromov-Witten invariants. We provide an algebro-combinatorial proof of the nonnegativity of the Gromov-Witten invariants in these cases, and present combinatorial expressions for these coefficients.

In [Decompositions and statistics for β(1,0)-trees and nonseparable permutations, Advances Appl. Math. 42 (2009) 313--328] we introduced an involution, h, on β(1,0)-trees. We neglected, however, to prove that h indeed is an involution. In this note we provide the missing proof. We also refine an equidistribution result given in the same paper.
Abelian 1-factorizations of complete multipartite graphs
An automorphism group G of a 1-factorization of the complete multipartite graph $K_{m\times n}$ consists in permutations of the vertices of the graph mapping factors to factors. In this paper, we give a complete answer to the existence or non-existence problem of a 1-factorization of $K_{m\times n}$ admitting an abelian group acting sharply transitively on the vertices of the graph.

Let $q>2$ be a prime power and $f={\tt x}^{q-2}+t{\tt x}^{q^2-q-1}$, where $t\in\Bbb F_q^*$. It was recently conjectured that $f$ is a permutation polynomial of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ if and only if one of the following holds: (i) $t=1$, $q\equiv 1\pmod 4$; (ii) $t=-3$, $q\equiv \pm1\pmod{12}$; (iii) $t=3$, $q\equiv -1\pmod 6$. We confirm this conjecture in the present paper.
Extended Orbits-Fixedpoints Relations
I extend further, using new proofs, two generalizations of an earlier orbits-fixed-points theorem, which was restricted to group action of the symmetric group. The extended equality makes use of the Stirling numbers of the second kind. An illustration using Mathieu group M24 is discussed. Possible applications using tensor products of matrix permutation representations is indicated.

We develop an algorithm based on three basic DNA editing operations suggested by a model for ciliate micronuclear decryption, to transform a given permutation into another. The number of ciliate operations performed by our algorithm during such a transformation is taken to be the distance between two such permutations. Applying well-known clustering methods to such distance functions enables one to determine phylogenies among the items to which the distance functions apply. As an application of these ideas we explore the relationships among the chromosomes of eight fruitfly (drosophila) species, using the well-known UPGMA algorithm on the distance function provided by our algorithm.
Harmonic numbers, Catalan's triangle and mesh patterns

The notion of a mesh pattern was introduced recently, but it has already proved to be a useful tool for description purposes related to sets of permutations. In this paper we study eight mesh patterns of small lengths. In particular, we link avoidance of one of the patterns to the harmonic numbers, while for three other patterns we show their distributions on 132-avoiding permutations are given by the Catalan triangle. Also, we show that two specific mesh patterns are Wilf-equivalent. As a byproduct of our studies, we define a new set of sequences counted by the Catalan numbers and provide a relation on the Catalan triangle that seems to be new.

The Eulerian numbers count permutations according to the number of descents. The two-sided Eulerian numbers count permutations according to number of descents and the number of descents in the inverse permutation. Here we derive some results for Eulerian and two-sided Eulerian numbers using an elementary "balls-in-boxes" approach. We also discuss an open conjecture of Ira Gessel about the two-sided Eulerian numbers.

We prove that Boolean functions on $S_{n}$ whose Fourier transform is highly concentrated on the first two irreducible representations of $S_n$, are close to being unions of cosets of point-stabilizers. We use this to give a natural proof of a stability result on intersecting families of permutations, originally conjectured by Cameron and Ku, and first proved by the first author. We also use it to prove a `quasi-stability' result for an edge-isoperimetric inequality in the transposition graph on $S_n$, namely that subsets of $S_n$ with small edge-boundary in the transposition graph are close to being unions of cosets of point-stabilizers.

Let K be the product O(n_1) x O(n_2) x ... x O(n_r) of orthogonal groups. Let V the r-fold tensor product of defining representations of each orthogonal factor. We compute a stable formula for the dimension of the K-invariant algebra of degree d homogeneous polynomial functions on V. To accomplish this, we compute a formula for the number of matchings which commute with a fixed permutation. Finally, we provide formulas for the invariants and describe a bijection between a basis for the space of invariants and the isomorphism classes of certain r-regular graphs on d vertices, as well as a method of associating each invariant to other combinatorial settings such as phylogenetic trees.
