Motivated by the enumeration of a class of plane partitions studied by Proctor and by considerations about symmetry classes of plane partitions, we consider the problem of enumerating lozenge tilings of a hexagon with ``maximal staircases'' removed from some of its vertices. The case of one vertex corresponds to Proctor's problem. For two vertices there are several cases to consider, and most of them lead to nice enumeration formulas. For three or more vertices there do not seem to exist nice product formulas in general, but in one special situation a lot of factorization occurs, and we pose the problem of finding a formula for the number of tilings in this case.

We consider the groundstate wavefunction of the quantum symmetric antiferromagnetic XXZ chain with open and twisted boundary conditions at $Δ=-{1/2}$, along with the groundstate wavefunction of the corresponding O($n$) loop model at $n=1$. Based on exact results for finite-size systems, sums involving the wavefunction components, and in some cases the largest component itself, are conjectured to be directly related to the total number of alternating sign matrices and plane partitions in certain symmetry classes.

We compute the weighted enumeration of plane partitions contained in a given box with complementation symmetry where adding one half of an orbit of cubes and removing the other half of the orbit changes the weight by -1 as proposed by Kuperberg. We use nonintersecting lattice path families to accomplish this for transpose-complementary, cyclically symmetric transpose-complementary and totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions. For symmetric transpose-complementary and self-complementary plane partitions we get partial results. We also describe Kuperberg's proof for the case of cyclically symmetric self-complementary plane partitions.
Symmetry Classes of Alternating Sign Matrices
An alternating sign matrix is a square matrix satisfying (i) all entries are equal to 1, -1 or 0; (ii) every row and column has sum 1; (iii) in every row and column the non-zero entries alternate in sign. The 8-element group of symmetries of the square acts in an obvious way on square matrices. For any subgroup of the group of symmetries of the square we may consider the subset of matrices invariant under elements of this subgroup. There are 8 conjugacy classes of these subgroups giving rise to 8 symmetry classes of matrices. R. P. Stanley suggested the study of those alternating sign matrices in each of these symmetry classes. We have found evidence suggesting that for six of the symmetry classes there exist simple product formulas for the number of alternating sign matrices in the class. Moreover the factorizations of certain of their generating functions point to rather startling connections between several of the symmetry classes and cyclically symmetric plane partitions.

We deal with unweighted and weighted enumerations of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with side lengths $a,b+m,c,a+m,b,c+m$, where an equilateral triangle of side length $m$ has been removed from the center. We give closed formulas for the plain enumeration and for a certain $(-1)$-enumeration of these lozenge tilings. In the case that $a=b=c$, we also provide closed formulas for certain weighted enumerations of those lozenge tilings that are cyclically symmetric. For $m=0$, the latter formulas specialize to statements about weighted enumerations of cyclically symmetric plane partitions. One such specialization gives a proof of a conjecture of Stembridge on a certain weighted count of cyclically symmetric plane partitions. The tools employed in our proofs are nonstandard applications of the theory of nonintersecting lattice paths and determinant evaluations. In particular, we evaluate the determinants $\det_{0\le i,j\le n-1}\big(\om δ_{ij}+\binom {m+i+j}j\big)$, where $\om$ is any 6th root of unity. These determinant evaluations are variations of a famous result due to Andrews (Invent. Math. 53 (1979), 193--225), which corresponds to $\om=1$.

We define an n-dimensional polytope Pi_n(x), depending on parameters x_i>0, whose combinatorial properties are closely connected with empirical distributions, plane trees, plane partitions, parking functions, and the associahedron. In particular, we give explicit formulas for the volume of Pi_n(x) and, when the x_i's are integers, the number of integer points in Pi_n(x). We give two polyhedral decompositions of Pi_n(x), one related to order cones of posets and the other to the associahedron.

The permanent-determinant method and its generalization, the Hafnian-Pfaffian method, are methods to enumerate perfect matchings of plane graphs that was discovered by P. W. Kasteleyn. We present several new techniques and arguments related to the permanent-determinant with consequences in enumerative combinatorics. Here are some of the results that follow from these techniques:
1. If a bipartite graph on the sphere with 4n vertices is invariant under the antipodal map, the number of matchings is the square of the number of matchings of the quotient graph.
2. The number of matchings of the edge graph of a graph with vertices of degree at most 3 is a power of 2.
3. The three Carlitz matrices whose determinants count a x b x c plane partitions all have the same cokernel.
4. Two symmetry classes of plane partitions can be enumerated with almost no calculation.
Identities for classical group characters of nearly rectangular shape

We derive several identities that feature irreducible characters of the general linear, the symplectic, the orthogonal, and the special orthogonal groups. All the identities feature characters that are indexed by shapes that are "nearly" rectangular, by which we mean that the shapes are rectangles except for one row or column that might be shorter than the others. As applications we prove new results in plane partitions and tableaux enumeration, including new refinements of the Bender-Knuth and MacMahon (ex-)conjectures.

Plane partitions I: a generalization of MacMahon's formula
The number of plane partitions contained in a given box was shown by MacMahon to be given by a simple product formula. By a simple bijection, this formula also enumerates lozenge tilings of hexagons of side-lengths $a,b,c,a,b,c$ (in cyclic order) and angles of 120 degrees. We present a generalization in the case $b=c$ by giving simple product formulas enumerating lozenge tilings of regions obtained from a hexagon of side-lengths $a,b+k,b,a+k,b,b+k$ (where $k$ is an arbitrary non-negative integer) and angles of 120 degrees by removing certain triangular regions along its symmetry axis.

We present new, simple proofs for the enumeration of five of the ten symmetry classes of plane partitions contained in a given box. Four of them are derived from a simple determinant evaluation, using combinatorial arguments. The previous proofs of these four cases were quite complicated. For one more symmetry class we give an elementary proof in the case when two of the sides of the box are equal. Our results include simple evaluations of the determinants $\det(δ_{ij}+{x+i+j\choose i})_{0\leq i,j\leq n-1}$ and $\det({x+i+j\choose 2j-i})_{0\leq i,j\leq n-1}$, notorious in plane partition enumeration, whose previous evaluations were quite intricate.
The equivalence between enumerating cyclically symmetric, self-complementary and totally symmetric, self-complementary plane partitions

We prove that the number of cyclically symmetric, self-complementary plane partitions contained in a cube of side $2n$ equals the square of the number of totally symmetric, self-complementary plane partitions contained in the same cube, without explicitly evaluating either of these numbers. This appears to be the first direct proof of this fact. The problem of finding such a proof was suggested by Stanley.

Another bijective proof of Stanley's hook-content formula for the generating function for semistandard tableaux of a given shape is given that does not involve the involution principle of Garsia and Milne. It is the result of a merge of the modified jeu de taquin idea from the author's previous bijective proof (``An involution principle-free bijective proof of Stanley's hook-content formula", Discrete Math. Theoret. Computer Science, to appear) and the Novelli-Pak-Stoyanovskii bijection (Discrete Math. Theoret. Computer Science 1 (1997), 53-67) for the hook formula for standard Young tableaux of a given shape. This new algorithm can also be used as an algorithm for the random generation of tableaux of a given shape with bounded entries. An appropriate deformation of this algorithm gives an algorithm for the random generation of plane partitions inside a given box.
The shape of a typical boxed plane partition

Using a calculus of variations approach, we determine the shape of a typical plane partition in a large box (i.e., a plane partition chosen at random according to the uniform distribution on all plane partitions whose solid Young diagrams fit inside the box). Equivalently, we describe the distribution of the three different orientations of lozenges in a random lozenge tiling of a large hexagon. We prove a generalization of the classical formula of MacMahon for the number of plane partitions in a box; for each of the possible ways in which the tilings of a region can behave when restricted to certain lines, our formula tells the number of tilings that behave in that way. When we take a suitable limit, this formula gives us a functional which we must maximize to determine the asymptotic behavior of a plane partition in a box. Once the variational problem has been set up, we analyze it using a modification of the methods employed by Logan and Shepp and by Vershik and Kerov in their studies of random Young tableaux.
Rhombus Tilings of a Hexagon with Three Fixed Border Tiles

We compute the number of rhombus tilings of a hexagon with sides $a+2,b+2,c+2,a+2,b+2,c+2$ with three fixed tiles touching the border. The particular case $a=b=c$ solves a problem posed by Propp. Our result can also be viewed as the enumeration of plane partitions having $a+2$ rows and $b+2$ columns, with largest entry $\le c+2$, with a given number of entries $c+2$ in the first row, a given number of entries 0 in the last column and a given bottom-left entry.

Major Percy A. MacMahon's first paper on plane partitions included a conjectured generating function for symmetric plane partitions. This conjecture was proven almost simultaneously by George Andrews and Ian Macdonald, Andrews using the machinery of basic hypergeometric series and Macdonald employing his knowledge of symmetric functions. The purpose of this paper is to simplify Macdonald's proof by providing a direct, inductive proof of his formula which expresses the sum of Schur functions whose partitions fit inside a rectangular box as a ratio of determinants.

We prove a constant term conjecture of Robbins and Zeilberger (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 66 (1994), 17-27), by translating the problem into a determinant evaluation problem and evaluating the determinant. This determinant generalizes the determinant that gives the number of all totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions contained in a $(2n)\times(2n)\times(2n)$ box and that was used by Andrews (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 66 (1994), 28-39) and Andrews and Burge (Pacific J. Math. 158 (1993), 1-14) to compute this number explicitly. The evaluation of the generalized determinant is independent of Andrews and Burge's computations, and therefore in particular constitutes a new solution to this famous enumeration problem. We also evaluate a related determinant, thus generalizing another determinant identity of Andrews and Burge (loc. cit.). By translating some of our determinant identities into constant term identities, we obtain several new constant term identities.
The number of rhombus tilings of a "punctured" hexagon and the minor summation formula

We compute the number of all rhombus tilings of a hexagon with sides $a,b+1,c,a+1,b,c+1$, of which the central triangle is removed, provided $a,b,c$ have the same parity. The result is a product of four numbers, each of which counts the number of plane partitions inside a given box. The proof uses nonintersecting lattice paths and a new identity for Schur functions, which is proved by means of the minor summation formula of Ishikawa and Wakayama. A symmetric generalization of this identity is stated as a conjecture.
