One-adhesive polymatroids
Adhesive polymatroids were defined by F. Matúš motivated by entropy functions. Two polymatroids are adhesive if they can be glued together along their joint part in a modular way; and are one-adhesive, if one of them has a single point outside their intersection. It is shown that two polymatroids are one-adhesive if and only if two closely related polymatroids have any extension. Using this result, adhesive polymatroid pairs on a five-element set are characterized.

A Polymatroid Approach to Generalized Weights of Rank Metric Codes
We consider the notion of a $(q,m)$-polymatroid, due to Shiromoto, and the more general notion of $(q,m)$-demi-polymatroid, and show how generalized weights can be defined for them. Further, we establish a duality for these weights analogous to Wei duality for generalized Hamming weights of linear codes. The corresponding results of Ravagnani for Delsarte rank metric codes, and Martinez-Penas and Matsumoto for relative generalized rank weights are derived as a consequence.
Flag matroids: algebra and geometry
Published • View PublicationBIB
Matroids are ubiquitous in modern combinatorics. As discovered by Gelfand, Goresky, MacPherson and Serganova there is a beautiful connection between matroid theory and the geometry of Grassmannians: realizable matroids correspond to torus orbits in Grassmannians. Further, as observed by Fink and Speyer general matroids correspond to classes in the $K$-theory of Grassmannians. This yields in particular a geometric description of the Tutte polynomial. In this review we describe all these constructions in detail, and moreover we generalise some of them to polymatroids. More precisely, we study the class of flag matroids and their relations to flag varieties. In this way, we obtain an analogue of the Tutte polynomial for flag matroids.

On power ideals of transversal matroids and their "parking functions"
Published • View PublicationBIB
To a vector configuration one can associate a polynomial ideal generated by powers of linear forms, known as a power ideal, which exhibits many combinatorial features of the matroid underlying the configuration. In this note we observe that certain power ideals associated to transversal matroids are, somewhat unexpectedly, monomial. Moreover, the (monomial) basis elements of the quotient ring defined by such a power ideal can be naturally identified with the lattice points of a remarkable convex polytope: a polymatroid, also known as generalized permutohedron. We dub the exponent vectors of these monomial basis elements "parking functions" of the corresponding transversal matroid. We highlight the connection between our investigation and Stanley-Reisner theory, and relate our findings to Stanley's conjectured necessary condition on matroid $h$-vectors.
Rank-Metric Codes and $q$-Polymatroids
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics (2019) • View PublicationBIB
This paper contributes to the study of rank-metric codes from an algebraic and combinatorial point of view. We introduce $q$-polymatroids, the $q$-analogue of polymatroids, and develop their basic properties. We associate a pair of q-polymatroids to a rank-metric codes and show that several invariants and structural properties of the code, such as generalized weights, the property of being MRD or an optimal anticode, and duality, are captured by the associated combinatorial object.

The Tutte polynomial via lattice point counting
Published • View PublicationBIB
We recover the Tutte polynomial of a matroid, up to change of coordinates, from an Ehrhart-style polynomial counting lattice points in the Minkowski sum of its base polytope and scalings of simplices. Our polynomial has coefficients of alternating sign with a combinatorial interpretation closely tied to the Dawson partition. Our definition extends in a straightforward way to polymatroids, and in this setting our polynomial has Kálmán's internal and external activity polynomials as its univariate specialisations.

The Hopf monoid of Megagreedoids
We introduce megagreedoids, which generalize polymatroids, megamatroids, and greedoids. We define a quasisymmetric function invariant for a megagreedoid, and show that it has a positive expansion in the basis of fundamental quasisymmetric functions. Our proof involves lexicographic shellability. We also show that megagreedoids form a Hopf monoid. A running example is a megagreedoid associated to a rooted connected graph, and the resulting generalization of the chromatic symmetric function.

A splitter theorem for 3-connected 2-polymatroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Seymour's Splitter Theorem is a basic inductive tool for dealing with $3$-connected matroids. This paper proves a generalization of that theorem for the class of $2$-polymatroids. Such structures include matroids, and they model both sets of points and lines in a projective space and sets of edges in a graph. A series compression in such a structure is an analogue of contracting an edge of a graph that is in a series pair. A $2$-polymatroid $N$ is an s-minor of a $2$-polymatroid $M$ if $N$ can be obtained from $M$ by a sequence of contractions, series compressions, and dual-contractions, where the last are modified deletions. The main result proves that if $M$ and $N$ are $3$-connected $2$-polymatroids such that $N$ is an s-minor of $M$, then $M$ has a $3$-connected s-minor $M'$ that has an s-minor isomorphic to $N$ and has $|E(M)| - 1$ elements unless $M$ is a whirl or the cycle matroid of a wheel. In the exceptional case, such an $M'$ can be found with $|E(M)| - 2$ elements.
Matroid Theory and Storage Codes: Bounds and Constructions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recent research on distributed storage systems (DSSs) has revealed interesting connections between matroid theory and locally repairable codes (LRCs). The goal of this chapter is to introduce the reader to matroids and polymatroids, and illustrate their relation to distribute storage systems. While many of the results are rather technical in nature, effort is made to increase accessibility via simple examples. The chapter embeds all the essential features of LRCs, namely locality, availability, and hierarchy alongside with related generalised Singleton bounds.

Representable Chow classes of a product of projective spaces
Inside a product of projective spaces, we try to understand which Chow classes come from irreducible subvarieties. The answer is closely related to the theory of integer polymatroids. The support of a representable class can be (partially) characterized as some integer point inside a particular polymatroid. If the class is multiplicity-free, we obtain a complete characterization in terms of representable polymatroids. We also generalize some of the results to the case of products of Grassmannians.

On lexicographic approximations of integer programs
We use the lexicographic order to define a hierarchy of primal and dual bounds on the optimum of a bounded integer program. These bounds are constructed using lex maximal and minimal feasible points taken under different permutations. Their strength is analyzed and it is shown that a family of primal bounds is tight for any $0\backslash 1$ program with nonnegative linear objective, and a different family of dual bounds is tight for any packing- or covering-type $0\backslash 1$ program with an arbitrary linear objective. The former result yields a structural characterization for the optimum of $0\backslash 1$ programs, with connections to matroid optimization, and a heuristic for general integer programs. The latter result implies a stronger polyhedral representation for the integer feasible points and a new approach for deriving strong valid inequalities to the integer hull. Since the construction of our bounds depends on the computation of lex optima, we derive explicit formulae for lex optima of some special polytopes, such as polytopes that are monotone with respect to each variable, and integral polymatroids and their base polytopes. We also classify $\mathrm{P}$ and $\mathrm{NP}$-$\mathrm{hard}$ cases of computing lex bounds and lex optima.

Connectivity Functions and Polymatroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
A {\em connectivity function on} a set $E$ is a function $λ:2^E\rightarrow \mathbb R$ such that $λ(\emptyset)=0$, that $λ(X)=λ(E-X)$ for all $X\subseteq E$ and that $λ(X\cap Y)+λ(X\cup Y)\leq λ(X)+λ(Y)$ for all $X,Y \subseteq E$. Graphs, matroids and, more generally, polymatroids have associated connectivity functions. We introduce a notion of duality for polymatroids and prove that every connectivity function is the connectivity function of a self-dual polymatroid. We also prove that every integral connectivity function is the connectivity function of a half-integral self-dual polymatroid.

A lattice point counting generalisation of the Tutte polynomial
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Tutte polynomial for matroids is not directly applicable to polymatroids. For instance, deletion-contraction properties do not hold. We construct a polynomial for polymatroids which behaves similarly to the Tutte polynomial of a matroid, and in fact contains the same information as the Tutte polynomial when we restrict to matroids. This polynomial is constructed using lattice point counts in the Minkowski sum of the base polytope of a polymatroid and scaled copies of the standard simplex. We also show that, in the matroid case, our polynomial has coefficients of alternating sign, with a combinatorial interpretation closely tied to the Dawson partition.
Matroids are Immune to Braess Paradox
Published • View PublicationBIB
The famous Braess paradox describes the following phenomenon: It might happen that the improvement of resources, like building a new street within a congested network, may in fact lead to larger costs for the players in an equilibrium. In this paper we consider general nonatomic congestion games and give a characterization of the maximal combinatorial property of strategy spaces for which Braess paradox does not occur. In a nutshell, bases of matroids are exactly this maximal structure. We prove our characterization by two novel sensitivity results for convex separable optimization problems over polymatroid base polyhedra which may be of independent interest.

Enumeration of $2$-Polymatroids on up to Seven Elements
Published • View PublicationBIB
A theory of single-element extensions of integer polymatroids analogous to that of matroids is developed. We present an algorithm to generate a catalog of $2$-polymatroids, up to isomorphism. When we implemented this algorithm on a computer, obtaining all $2$-polymatroids on at most seven elements, we discovered the surprising fact that the number of $2$-polymatroids on seven elements fails to be unimodal in rank.

Polymatroids and polyquantoids
Published in \emph{Proceedings of WUPES 2012}, Sept.\ 12--15, Mariánské Láznì, Czech Republic, 126--136 • Search Publication
When studying entropy functions of multivariate probability distributions, polymatroids and matroids emerge. Entropy functions of pure multiparty quantum states give rise to analogous notions, called here polyquantoids and quantoids. Polymatroids and polyquantoids are related via linear mappings and duality. Quantum secret sharing schemes that are ideal are described by selfdual matroids. Expansions of integer polyquantoids to quantoids are studied and linked to that of polymatroids.

A node-capacitated Okamura-Seymour theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
The classical Okamura-Seymour theorem states that for an edge-capacitated, multi-commodity flow instance in which all terminals lie on a single face of a planar graph, there exists a feasible concurrent flow if and only if the cut conditions are satisfied. Simple examples show that a similar theorem is impossible in the node-capacitated setting. Nevertheless, we prove that an approximate flow/cut theorem does hold: For some universal c > 0, if the node cut conditions are satisfied, then one can simultaneously route a c-fraction of all the demands. This answers an open question of Chekuri and Kawarabayashi. More generally, we show that this holds in the setting of multi-commodity polymatroid networks introduced by Chekuri, et. al. Our approach employs a new type of random metric embedding in order to round the convex programs corresponding to these more general flow problems.

The stable set of associated prime ideals of a polymatroidal ideal
Published • View PublicationBIB
The associated prime ideals of powers of polymatroidal ideals are studied, including the stable set of associated prime ideals of this class of ideals. It is shown that polymatroidal ideals have the persistence property and for transversal polymatroids and polymatroidal ideals of Veronese type the index of stability and the stable set of associated ideals is determined explicitly.

A version of Tutte's polynomial for hypergraphs
Tutte's dichromate T(x,y) is a well known graph invariant. Using the original definition in terms of internal and external activities as our point of departure, we generalize the valuations T(x,1) and T(1,y) to hypergraphs. In the definition, we associate activities to hypertrees, which are generalizations of the indicator function of the edge set of a spanning tree. We prove that hypertrees form a lattice polytope which is the set of bases in a polymatroid. In fact, we extend our invariants to integer polymatroids as well. We also examine hypergraphs that can be represented by planar bipartite graphs, write their hypertree polytopes in the form of a determinant, and prove a duality property that leads to an extension of Tutte's Tree Trinity Theorem.
$M$-Shellability of Discrete Polymatroids
In this note we show that every discrete polymatroid is $M$-shellable. This gives, in a partial case, a positive answer to a conjecture of Chari and improves a recent result of Schweig where he proved that the $h$-vector of a lattice path matroid satisfies a conjecture of Stanley.
