Weighted Subspace Designs from $q$-Polymatroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Assmus-Mattson theorem gives a way to identify block designs arising from codes. This result was broadened to matroids and weighted designs. In this work we present a further two-fold generalisation: first from matroids to polymatroids and also from sets to vector spaces. To achieve this, we introduce the characteristic polynomial of a $q$-polymatroid and outline several of its properties.

Fertilitopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce tools from discrete convexity theory and polyhedral geometry into the theory of West's stack-sorting map $s$. Associated to each permutation $π$ is a particular set $\mathcal V(π)$ of integer compositions that appears in a formula for the fertility of $π$, which is defined to be $|s^{-1}(π)|$. These compositions also feature prominently in more general formulas involving families of colored binary plane trees called troupes and in a formula that converts from free to classical cumulants in noncommutative probability theory. We show that $\mathcal V(π)$ is a transversal discrete polymatroid when it is nonempty. We define the fertilitope of $π$ to be the convex hull of $\mathcal V(π)$, and we prove a surprisingly simple characterization of fertilitopes as nestohedra arising from full binary plane trees. Using known facts about nestohedra, we provide a procedure for describing the structure of the fertilitope of $π$ directly from $π$ using Bousquet-Mélou's notion of the canonical tree of $π$. As a byproduct, we obtain a new combinatorial cumulant conversion formula in terms of generalizations of canonical trees that we call quasicanonical trees. We also apply our results on fertilitopes to study combinatorial properties of the stack-sorting map. In particular, we show that the set of fertility numbers has density $1$, and we determine all infertility numbers of size at most $126$. Finally, we reformulate the conjecture that $\sum_{σ\in s^{-1}(π)}x^{\text{des}(σ)+1}$ is always real-rooted in terms of nestohedra, and we propose natural ways in which this new version of the conjecture could be extended.

Minor-closed classes of binary functions
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 26:3, Combinatorics (November 4, 2024) dmtcs:12230 • View PublicationBIB
Binary functions are a generalisation of the cocircuit spaces of binary matroids to arbitrary functions. Every rank function is assigned a binary function, and the deletion and contraction operations of binary functions generalise matroid deletion and contraction. We give the excluded minor characterisations for the classes of binary functions with well defined minors, and those with an associated rank function. Within these classes, we also characterise the classes of binary functions corresponding to polymatroids, matroids and binary matroids by their excluded minors. This gives a new proof of Tutte's excluded minor characterisation of binary matroids in the more generalised space of binary functions.

Products of polymatroids with the strong exchange property
Published in Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra, Volume 226, Issue 6, June 2022, 106967 • View PublicationBIB
It was conjectured by White in 1980 that the toric ring associated to a matroid is defined by symmetric exchange relations. This conjecture was extended to discrete polymatroids by Herzog and Hibi, and they prove that the conjecture holds for polymatroids with the so called strong exchange property. In this paper we generalize their result to polymatroids that are products of polymatroids with the strong exchange property. This also extends a result by Conca on transversal polymatroids.

Achieving Capacity Region of 2-users Weak GIC by Enlarging the Core in a Nested Set of Polymatroids (continuation of arXiv:2012.07820 "Optimality of Gaussian in Enlarging HK Rate Region, and its Overlap with ...")
This article shows that achieving capacity region of a 2-users weak Gaussian Interference Channel (GIC) is equivalent to enlarging the core in a nested set of Polymatroids (each equivalent to capacity region of a multiple-access channel) through maximizing a minimum rate, then projecting along its orthogonal span and continuing recursively. This formulation relies on defining dummy private messages to capture the effect of interference in GIC. It follows that relying on independent Gaussian random code-books is optimum, and the corresponding solution corresponds to achieving the boundary in HK constraints.

Polypositroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We initiate the study of a class of polytopes, which we coin polypositroids, defined to be those polytopes that are simultaneously generalized permutohedra (or polymatroids) and alcoved polytopes. Whereas positroids are the matroids arising from the totally nonnegative Grassmannian, polypositroids are "positive" polymatroids. We parametrize polypositroids using Coxeter necklaces and balanced graphs, and describe the cone of polypositroids by extremal rays and facet inequalities. We introduce a notion of (W,c)-polypositroid for a finite Weyl group W and a choice of Coxeter element c. We connect the theory of (W,c)-polypositroids to cluster algebras of finite type and to generalized associahedra. We discuss membranes, which are certain triangulated 2-dimensional surfaces inside polypositroids. Membranes extend the notion of plabic graphs from positroids to polypositroids.

Recognising Graphic and Matroidal Connectivity Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A {\em connectivity function} on a set $E$ is a function $λ:2^E\rightarrow \mathbb R$ such that $λ(\emptyset)=0$, that $λ(X)=λ(E-X)$ for all $X\subseteq E$, and that $λ(X\cap Y)+λ(X\cup Y)\leq λ(X)+λ(Y)$ for all $X,Y \subseteq E$. Graphs, matroids and, more generally, polymatroids have associated connectivity functions. In this paper we give a method for identifying when a connectivity function comes from a graph. This method uses no more than a polynomial number of evaluations of the connectivity function. In contrast, we show that the problem of identifying when a connectivity function comes from a matroid cannot be solved in polynomial time. We also show that the problem of identifying when a connectivity function is not that of a matroid cannot be solved in polynomial time.
When are multidegrees positive?
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $k$ be an arbitrary field, $P = P_k^{m_1} \times_k \cdots \times_k P_k^{m_p}$ be a multiprojective space over $k$, and $X \subseteq P$ be a closed subscheme of $P$. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the positivity of the multidegrees of $X$. As a consequence of our methods, we show that when $X$ is irreducible, the support of multidegrees forms a discrete algebraic polymatroid. In algebraic terms, we characterize the positivity of the mixed multiplicities of a standard multigraded algebra over an Artinian local ring, and we apply this to the positivity of mixed multiplicities of ideals. Furthermore, we use our results to recover several results in the literature in the context of combinatorial algebraic geometry.

Access Structures Determined by Uniform Polymatroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
An access structure is said to be multipartite, if the set of participants is divided into several parts and all participants in the same part play an equivalent role. The search for ideal secret sharing schemes for some special interesting families of multipartite access structures, has been carried out by many authors. In this paper a new concept of study of ideal access structures is proposed. We do not consider special classes of access structures defined by imposing certain prescribed assumptions, but we investigate all access structures obtained from uniform polymatroids using the method developed by Farràs, Martí-Farré and Padró. They satisfy necessary condition to be ideal, i.e., they are matroid ports. Moreover some objects in this family can be useful for the applications of secret sharing. The choice of uniform polymatroids is motivated by the fact that each such polymatroid defines ideal access structures. The method presented in this article is universal and can be continued with other classes of polymatroids in further similar studies. Here we are especially interested in hierarchy of participants determined by the access structure and we distinguish two main classes: they are compartmented and hierarchical access structures. The vast majority of papers discussing hierarchical access structures consider access structures which are compartment or totally hierarchical. The main results are summarized in Section 4, which presents situations where partial hierarchy properties may arise. In particular, hierarchical orders of obtained structures are described. It is surprising, that the hierarchical orders of access structures obtained from uniform polymatroids are flat, i.e., every chain has at most 2 elements. The ideality of some families of hierarchical access structures is proved in Section 5.

Universal Tutte polynomial
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Tutte polynomial is a well-studied invariant of graphs and matroids. We first extend the Tutte polynomial from graphs to hypergraphs, and more generally from matroids to polymatroids, as a two-variable polynomial. Our definition is related to previous works of Cameron and Fink and of Kálmán and Postnikov. We then define the universal Tutte polynomial $\T_n$, which is a polynomial of degree $n$ in $2+(2^n-1)$ variables that specializes to the Tutte polynomials of all polymatroids (hence all matroids) on a ground set with $n$ elements. The universal polynomial $\T_n$ admits three kinds of symmetries: translation invariance, $S_n$-invariance, and duality.

Tropical Carathéodory with Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Bárány's colorful generalization of Carathéodory's Theorem combines geometrical and combinatorial constraints. Kalai-Meshulam (2005) and Holmsen (2016) generalized Bárány's theorem by replacing color classes with matroid constraints. In this note, we obtain corresponding results in tropical convexity, generalizing the tropical colorful Carathéodory Theorem of Gaubert-Meunier (2010). Our proof is inspired by geometric arguments and is reminiscent of matroid intersection. In particular, we show that the topological approach fails in this setting. We also discuss tropical colorful linear programming and show that it is NP-complete. We end with thoughts and questions on generalizations to polymatroids, anti-matroids as well as examples and matroid simplicial depth.

Sticky polymatroids on at most five elements

The sticky polymatroid conjecture states that any two extensions of the polymatroid have an amalgam if and only if the polymatroid has no non-modular pairs of flats. We show that the conjecture holds for polymatroids on five or less elements.

Cyclic flats of a polymatroid
Published • View PublicationBIB
Polymatroids can be considered as "fractional matroid" where the rank function is not required to be integer valued. Many, but not every notion in matroid terminology translates naturally to polymatroids. Defining cyclic flats of a polymatroid carefully, the characterization by Bonin and de Mier of the ranked lattice of cyclic flats carries over to polymatroids. The main tool, which might be of independent interest, is a convolution-like method which creates a polymatroid from a ranked lattice and a discrete measure. Examples show the ease of using the convolution technique.

Resolution of ideals associated to subspace arrangements
Published in Alg. Number Th. 16 (2022) 1121-1140 • View PublicationBIB
Let $I_1,\dots,I_n$ be ideals generated by linear forms in a polynomial ring over an infinite field and let $J = I_1 \cdots I_n$. We describe a minimal free resolution of $J$ and show that it is supported on a polymatroid obtained from the underlying representable polymatroid by means of the so-called Dilworth truncation. Formulas for the projective dimension and Betti numbers are given in terms of the polymatroid as well as a characterization of the associated primes. Along the way we show that $J$ has linear quotients. In fact, we do this for a large class of ideals $J_P$, where $P$ is a certain poset ideal associated to the underlying subspace arrangement.

Sticky matroids and convolution
Motivated by the characterization of the lattice of cyclic flats of a matroid, the convolution of a ranked lattice and a discrete measure is defined, generalizing polymatroid convolution. Using the convolution technique we prove that if a matroid has a non-principal modular cut then it is not sticky. A similar statement for matroids has been proved in [8] using different technique.

A note on the connectivity of 2-polymatroid minors
Published • View PublicationBIB
Brylawski and Seymour independently proved that if $M$ is a connected matroid with a connected minor $N$, and $e \in E(M) - E(N)$, then $M \backslash e$ or $M / e$ is connected having $N$ as a minor. This paper proves an analogous but somewhat weaker result for $2$-polymatroids. Specifically, if $M$ is a connected $2$-polymatroid with a proper connected minor $N$, then there is an element $e$ of $E(M) - E(N)$ such that $M \backslash e$ or $M / e$ is connected having $N$ as a minor. We also consider what can be said about the uniqueness of the way in which the elements of $E(M) - E(N)$ can be removed so that connectedness is always maintained.

Decomposable polymatroids and connections with graph coloring
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce ideas that complement the many known connections between polymatroids and graph coloring. Given a hypergraph that satisfies certain conditions, we construct polymatroids, given as rank functions, that can be written as sums of rank functions of matroids, and for which the minimum number of matroids required in such sums is the chromatic number of the line graph of the hypergraph. This result motivates introducing chromatic numbers and chromatic polynomials for polymatroids. We show that the chromatic polynomial of any 2-polymatroid is a rational multiple of the chromatic polynomial of some graph. We also find the excluded minors for the minor-closed class of polymatroids that can be written as sums of rank functions of matroids that form a chain of quotients.

The Tropical Division Problem and the Minkowski Factorization of Generalized Permutahedra
Given two tropical polynomials $f, g$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$, we provide a characterization for the existence of a factorization $f= h \odot g$ and the construction of $h$. As a ramification of this result we obtain a parallel result for the Minkowski factorization of polytopes. Using our construction we show that for any given polytopal fan there is a polytope factorization basis, i.e. a finite set of polytopes with respect to which any polytope whose normal fan is refined by the original fan can be uniquely written as a signed Minkowski sum. We explicitly study the factorization of polymatroids and their generalizations, Coxeter matroid polytopes, and give a hyperplane description of the cone of deformations for this class of polytopes.

A Note on M-convex Functions on Jump Systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
A jump system is defined as a set of integer points (vectors) with a certain exchange property, generalizing the concepts of matroids, delta-matroids, and base polyhedra of integral polymatroids (or submodular systems). A discrete convexity concept is defined for functions on constant-parity jump systems and it has been used in graph theory and algebra. In this paper we call it "jump M-convexity" and extend it to "jump M-natural-convexity" for functions defined on a larger class of jump systems. By definition, every jump M-convex function is a jump M-natural-convex function, and we show the equivalence of these concepts by establishing an (injective) embedding of jump M-natural-convex functions in n variables into the set of jump M-convex functions in n+1 variables. Using this equivalence we show further that jump M-natural-convex functions admit a number of natural operations such as aggregation, projection (partial minimization), convolution, composition, and transformation by a network.
Coxeter submodular functions and deformations of Coxeter permutahedra
We describe the cone of deformations of a Coxeter permutahedron, or equivalently, the nef cone of the toric variety associated to a Coxeter complex. This family of polytopes contains polyhedral models for the Coxeter-theoretic analogs of compositions, graphs, matroids, posets, and associahedra. Our description extends the known correspondence between generalized permutahedra, polymatroids, and submodular functions to any finite reflection group.
